NY magazine’s financial advice columnist admits she lost $50K to scammer claiming to be CIA agent

A financial advice columnist for New York Magazine admitted she was scammed out of $50,000 by a con man who claimed to be a CIA agent and ordered her to stuff a shoe box full of cash and hand it to a courier in a white Mercedes.

Charlotte Cowles, who pens a financial advice column for The Cut, the digital fashion news site that operates under the umbrella of New York Magazine, wrote a first-person account on Thursday titled “The Day I Put $50,000 in a Shoe Box and Handed It to a Stranger: I never thought I was the kind of person to fall for a scam.”

According to Cowles, a mysterious man called her one evening in October and got her attention after he knew her Social Security number, home address, the names of family members and that her two-year-old son was playing in the living room of her Brooklyn apartment.

Cowles wrote that the man “told me my home was being watched, my laptop had been hacked, and we were in imminent danger.”

The man also claimed that Cowles had 22 bank accounts, nine vehicles and four properties registered to her name.

The bank accounts, according to the mysterious man, were used to wire more than $3 million overseas, “mostly to Jamaica and Iraq.”

Cowles was then asked if she knew someone named “Stella Suk-Yee Kwong.”

“He texted me a photo of her ID, which he claimed had been found in a car rented under my name that was abandoned on the southern border of Texas with blood and drugs in the trunk,” she wrote.

Cowles was told that “there were warrants out of my arrest in Maryland and Texas” and that she was being charged with cybercrimes, money laundering and drug trafficking.

Believing that she was the victim of identity theft, she texted her husband: “I’m in deep s–t.”

“My identity was stolen and it seems really bad,” she wrote to her husband.

Cowles said she checked her credit score, bank and credit card accounts. “Nothing looked out of the ordinary,” she wrote.

“I can help you, but only if you cooperate,” the man is reported to have told Cowles, who was instructed that she was not to alert her husband, the police or a lawyer about the phone call.

She wrote that on a Tuesday evening this past October, she “put $50,000 in cash in a shoe box, taped it shut as instructed, and carried it to the sidewalk in front of my apartment, my phone clasped to my ear.”

According to Cowles, she told the strange man on the other line: “Don’t let anyone hurt me.”

“You won’t be hurt,” the man reportedly told Cowles. “Just keep doing exactly as I say.”

Moments later, a white Mercedes SUV pulled up by the curb. The man on the phone told her that she was to “put the box through the window, say ‘thank you,’ and go back inside” without looking at the driver.

Failure to cooperate would result in the CIA needing to “freeze all assets in my name, including my actual bank accounts,” according to Cowles, whose resume includes being a columnist for The New York Times’ business section.

“My office is in Langley,” the scammer told Cowles. “We don’t have enough time. We need to act immediately.”

Cowles was told that she needed to hand over the $50,000 in cash because they needed to issue her a government check “under your new Social Security number” — which would replace the old one which needed to be shut down as a result of her falling victim to identity theft.

“Then, by monitoring any activity under my old Social Security number and accounts, they would catch the criminals who were using my identity and I would get my life back,” she wrote.

After handing over the money, she said she received a text message from a man named “Michael” who sent over a photo of a Treasury check made out to her for $50,000.

The hard copy of the check would be hand-delivered to her in the morning, Cowles was told.

When Cowles tried to secure an appointment at the Social Security office, she was told by a strange woman on the phone that “Michael” was “busy” and that he would “call you in the morning.”

“You are lying to me. Michael was lying. You just took my money and I’m never getting it back,” Cowles told the woman.

“You’re a f—king liar,” she told the woman.

When Cowles told the police what happened, a cop informed her that “no government agency will ever ask you for money.”

Cowles wrote that the day after the incident, “it all came crashing back, a fresh humiliation, and I curled into the fetal position.”

The Post has sought comment from Cowles.

Chicago scraps gunshot detection system accused of racial bias

If we just stop taking reports of crimes, the number of crimes goes down! The logic is ironclad.

Chicago will not renew its ShotSpotter contract and plans to stop using the controversial gunshot detection system later this year, Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office announced on Tuesday.

The system, which relies on an artificial intelligence algorithm and network of microphones to identify gunshots, has been criticized for inaccuracy, racial bias and law enforcement misuse. An Associated Press investigation of the technology detailed how police and prosecutors used ShotSpotter data as evidence in charging a Chicago grandfather with murder before a judge dismissed the case due to insufficient evidence.

Chicago’s contract with SoundThinking, a public safety technology company that says its ShotSpotter tool is used in roughly 150 cities, expires on Friday. The city plans to wind down use of ShotSpotter technology by late September, according to city officials. Since 2018, the city has spent $49m on ShotSpotter.

“Chicago will deploy its resources on the most effective strategies and tactics proven to accelerate the current downward trend in violent crime,” the city said in a statement.

“Doing this work, in consultation with community, violence prevention organizations and law enforcement, provides a pathway to a better, stronger, safer Chicago for all.”

Johnson’s office said that during the interim period, law enforcement and community safety groups would “assess tools and programs that effectively increase both safety and trust”, and issue recommendations.

A SoundThinking representative did not have comment on Tuesday.

Johnson, a first-term mayor, campaigned on a promise to end the use of ShotSpotter, putting him at odds with police leaders who have praised the system.

They argue that crime rates – not residents’ race – determine where the technology is deployed.

“Technology is where policing is going as a whole. If we’re not utilizing technology, then we fall behind in crime fighting,” Superintendent Larry Snelling of Chicago police told the AP in an October interview. “There are always going to be issues. Nothing is 100% and nothing’s going to be perfect.”

Violent crime, including homicides and shootings, has largely fallen across the country to about the same level as before the pandemic, though property crimes have risen in some places. In Chicago, the downward trend of violent crime has continued at the start of 2024 with a 30% drop in homicides. There were 39 through last week compared with 56 during the same period last year.

Chicago police declined comment on Tuesday, directing questions to the mayor’s office.

Community public safety groups argued that the system sends police officers to predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods for often unnecessary and hostile encounters. Problems with accuracy, for instance when the technology has mistakenly identified fireworks or motorcycle sounds as gunshots, have prompted cities including Charlotte, North Carolina, and San Antonio, Texas, to end their ShotSpotter contracts.

The Stop ShotSpotter Coalition praised the announcement but said Chicago should stop using the technology sooner.

“Victims, survivors, their families and the communities with the highest rates of gun violence deserve more tangible support, resources and solutions that have been forgone due to investments in policing and technology that do not prevent or reduce violence,” the coalition said in a Tuesday statement.

Will ShotSpotter end in Chicago on Friday? Mayor dodges questions as firm indicates there’s no deal

Wait, the next day, the DNC announced Chicago as the location for their national convention this presidential election year. Suddenly, the racist Shotspotter system isn’t that bad. At least until after the DNC. It’s a city run by clowns.

The question of whether the Chicago Police Department will retain access to ShotSpotter past Friday loomed over City Hall days after Mayor Brandon Johnson announced his plan to nix the controversial gunshot detection system at the end of the summer.

During a bizarre news conference Thursday, Johnson repeatedly refused to answer questions about whether ShotSpotter’s parent company, SoundThinking, would renew the current $49 million contract that’s set to expire at the end of the day Friday.

Johnson announced earlier in the week that he was ending the city’s relationship with ShotSpotter, but his office insisted the technology would remain until September — after the Democratic National Convention.

However, his administration hadn’t struck a new deal with SoundThinking, which has pushed for a longer renewal period.

In a statement Thursday, the Silicon Valley firm said it spent much of last year trying to engage the city in contract talks. As recently as December, the firm presented officials with a memorandum of understanding for a 12-month extension.

That proposal led to “preliminary discussions” about an eight- to nine-month extension that would’ve allowed the city to open a contract up for bidding and evaluate acoustic gunshot detection, the company said.

“Contrary to those discussions and without consultation with SoundThinking … Mayor Johnson announced a decommission plan, involving an extension of ShotSpotter through September 22,” the company said.

“We believe the shared goal of an extension period must provide the best possible data and analysis to the residents of the city of Chicago through greater transparency and reporting standards,” it said. “The way this is secured is through a minimum 12-month extension and modifications to the city’s current data and reporting protocols.”

A source familiar with the negotiations said the system could shut down when the existing contract ends. That could force police officials in the city’s most violent South and West Side districts to effectively go cold turkey.

SC deputies arrested after reporting 5 hoax ‘dead body’ emergencies while on duty, warrants say

Three deputies in South Carolina are facing charges after being accused of calling in five hoax emergencies while on duty.

Justin Tyler Reichard, 28; Darien Myles Roseau, 25; and Killian Daniel Loflin, 26, are charged with misconduct in office, criminal conspiracy and aggravated breach of peace.

According to arrest warrants on Feb. 4, the deputies reported five hoax emergencies within Cheraw, Chesterfield, McBee and Pageland.

“These hoax reports were telephoned to convenience stores or the respective municipal law enforcement agency and notified the call recipient of the location of a ‘dead body’ within the municipalities,” the warrants said.

The warrants said the hoax calls caused emergency responses from law enforcement and other emergency responders.

President Elect Toxic Deplorable Racist SAH Neande

Wait…..what!?!? This CC person writes a financial advice column, and she fell for the stoopidist scam ever!?
I have to wonder how many people lost money following her “advice”, and could they sue her for being a dumb-ass?
Seriously, if I got a call like that, “22 bank accounts, cars, properties”, I’d be asking for details on where to find them and how to access the accounts, ’cause I need to set up my retirement fund. Then laugh and hang up.

  • NO SHOW – Teddy Daniels, VFT-SC President
  • NO SHOW – Robert Cornicelli, VFT-SC VP
  • WALKED OUT – Chad Caton, resident of Horry County, and Veterans for Trump national Director of Operations, walked out after Donald Trump gave callouts and thanks to 2 members of the Horry County GOP Committee.
  • Stan Fitzgerald – PHONY “30 VIP TICKETS”. Fitzgerald published a lie on the VFAF / VFT website, and pushed the same lie on social media, claiming that Donald Trump gave VFT “30 VIP tickets”, and claiming he thanked Trump

The Conway Trump Rally took place in the HOME COUNTY of 3 of the 4.
Fitzgerald lives in Georgia.

Even better, 4 days later, and (only) 95 miles away.

So ask yourself this…

Many of us are veterans.
Many of us are for Trump in 2024.
Many of us are both, literally, veterans for Trump.

HOW MANY of you would behave and act like these
green sign unofficial “Veterans for Trump” clowns,
when a Trump Rally comes to your state,
and especially to your own county???

Add in the August 2023 PHONY VOUCH for JR Majewski
(ask if you don’t remember)

Is there anyone here who still finds anything positive or redeeming in value about the green sign unofficial VFAF/VFT?

Bloviating on OAN on February 11.

You know,
because according to his latest Sponsored Ads on YouTube,

MarineDad61

rgr769,
Are you seriously suggesting I have TDS?
I voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020.
I attended 2 rallies in 2016,
got stuck in the parking lot lines at the 1st,
and got in for the 2nd.
I attended 1 Trump Rally while Trump was in office.

Where’s the TDS, rgr?

But you think Teddy deserves some kind of free pass
for all of his his lies, bullshit, and phonying?

Because of “cause”?

Yet he can’t bother to show up at either of 2 Trump rallies in his own area in the past week?

rgr, by all means,
please fill us all in on how
faking Donald Trump’s voice with AI to tout himself
(to sell fearmongering books and crap),
or falsely calling himself a “White House insider”
and “good friend” of Trump,
is in your view, somehow ok?

MarineDad61

rgr769,
It’s clear that YOU are triggered,
that someone who wears and parades the banner of “Veterans for Trump”, and trots around proclaiming “America First”
(for his own personal gain),
turns out to be a big pile of steer turd.

Go join the new George Santos blog,
and watch him cry his blues,
as he blames everyone else but himself,
for getting expelled from Congress.

You know, just like fat Teddy.

BTW, that Santos seat just flipped to blue/Dem.
Blame not only Santos, but the County and NY State GOP Committees that FAILED to vet his bio, and propelled his election to office.

Last edited 9 months ago by MarineDad61
Roh-Dog

Can’t believe I’m going to do this…

Santos’ sole utility was lowering the threshold for expulsion.

Cui bono?

It wasn’t just the NY GOP; the press, voters, RNC, society failed at vetting him.

This stupid sumbitch wasn’t James Traficant, he was barely a blip on the radar for fraud, and certainly seems to have been detonated before he could benefit from squid pro roe as a congressman.

Elected officials being canned for essentially nothing (see: PDJT impeachment #1 specifically) is a slippery slope towards ‘democracy’ and I’ll have none of that, please and thank you.

Relax and stop knee-jerking into the minefield set by these uniparty assholes, couldya?

rgr769

He is obsessed with any phony, poser, or embellisher that purports to be a Republican. Those that publicly support the “evil orange man bad” really set him off.

Roh-Dog

The “phony, poser,.. embellisher”, liar or hypocrite has no friend here either!

But a metered and corresponding response should be painstaking, neither hasty nor delayed.

‘Patience and prudence being proper for Justice’, and all that.

Perhaps I’m missing something on The Teddy Affair, but at this point it’s hard to care given the static-to-noise ratio presented.

I’ll own that.

MarineDad61

Roh-Dog,
Teddy continues phonying, and parlaying his phonying, into $$$ and more, because he is a skilled and experienced CON MAN.

It’s that simple.

And his phonying now with online Sponsored Ads is that complex.

Green Thumb

The “phony, poser,.. embellisher”, liar or hypocrite has no friend here either!

But they do at All-Points Logistics!

MarineDad61

rgr769,
FALSE.
YOU LIE.

I do NOT consider partisan politics when it comes to phonies… and I do NOT give free pass to ANY PHONY,
Democrat, Republican, or no politics involved.

Politics is OFF my table, when phonies are involved.

YOU should know better.
Everyone should.

MarineDad61

Any recent prevalence of military phonies and Stolen Valor types brought out into the open belonging more to 1 party than the other, is not my fault, and not my problem.

Sadly, in the past 2-4 years, way more Republicans are laying themselves out in public, running for office, with phony military bios and phony war and combat claims.

Democrats are doing it, too, but apparently not in the same numbers (yet), and certainly not being verified and called out as much, either.

Again,
not my fault.
Again,
not my problem.

How does someone who ostensibly knows anything about finance get scammed? Unless, of course…

Amateur Historian

My sister almost got scammed by a man on the phone claiming to be an IRS Agent. He said (in a particularly thick Indian accent) that she had thousands of dollars of unpaid taxes and that he was sending the local police over to arrest unless she cooperated with him. I was in the next room and the only way I could get her to listen to me about it being a scam was to have her talk to our dad about it (she always listened to him more).

Good thing you intervened, otherwise she would have spent the rest of the day driving all over the place and purchase pre-paid VISA cards.

I received a few calls from “Officer Jackson, I.D. #3428” from Bangladesh (or wherever). I’d keep him on the phone as long as I could just to waste his time, so to keep him from calling someone else.

rgr769

A friend who is a retired sheriff deputy received one of these calls. When the caller said there were officers a block away who would come to arrest him if not compliant, he responded: “Good, I am a cop. I’ll be sitting on my front porch with a shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot. Come and get me.” The caller immediately hung up.

When the ShotSpotter program was announced as ending, the company said, “Okay, effective nearly immediately, since the contract has not been signed”. Suddenly, there’s an extension on the program, with scheduled phasing out fully ending in Sept. ’24.

Any guesses where the program will be phased out last? Say, around the United Center where the DNC convention is to take place in August? Purely coincidental, I’m sure.

Who wants to bet “assaults” with bullets will skyrocket in the phased-out areas immediately. Scheduling this with the onset of warmer weather makes this an even better idea.

They scrimped and saved to send you to the University of New Delhi to get a degree in computer science, and you managed to land a job in a call center scamming people out of their life savings.”

I do know some insults in their language:

Mahda chod which I think translates to mother fucker.

The somewhat related Bok chod. If you say those things to one of those scammers, they lose their minds. They also hate when you ask, “So how’s the weather in Bangalore today?”🤣

Normally when they ask my name I start spelling them this:

But 30 characters in they start saying “thank you thank you”, But I keep rolling. Only once did I ever get through the whole name. Normally they hang up less than 100 characters in.

Green Thumb

I just tell them my balls itch.

Will you scratch them?

Too easy!

Hack tells them “Last name is Mamma, M, A, M, M, A. First name Joe. Joe Mamma.”

Hack Stone

Hack Stone is going to start a Financial Advice column for employees of All Points Logistics. The first column will be how to ensure that you have savings set aside for retirement. The advice will be if Phil Monkress asks you to go on a military blog to defend his claims of being a US Navy SEAL. Failure to heed this advice could lead to loss of life savings, employment, home, reputation and mailbox door.

It sure was fortuitous that Charlotte Cowles coincidentally had $50,000 in cash in her residence. She must take financial advice from Georgia Prosecutor Fani Willis.

OAM

Well then, Charlotte must be black. Because according to Fani, that’s a black culture thing. If she’s not black, is that cultural appropriation?

This is too good to wait for next week:

State police search for person accused of being involved in East Haddam bail scam (NBCCT.com)

The resident contacted state police and said they received a phone call on Friday saying a family member was in custody after being involved in a crash.

According to the resident, they were informed that a bail bondsman would contact them by phone and would arrange to pick up the amount of cash required for their family member’s bond at the resident’s home.

In a second call, the resident said the amount of cash needed was discussed. The scammer reportedly told the resident that someone would arrive at their home to pick up the cash in person.

About one hour later, the resident said someone arrived at their home and picked up the cash.

I don’t even know how one falls for crap like this. Not many family members getting arrested?

Must be nice to have the luxury to not have Larry’s or AAA Bonds on speed dial.

I sure hope the newly-minted felon uses some of that ill-gotten money to buy himself a haircut and pick because that ‘fade’ is looking down right homeless and feral, my guy! (see below)
