Weekend Open Thread
This image nicely describes some of the exposed phonies, and their sock puppets, that come here. They argue, become belligerent, demanding, and even abrasive, then wonder why folks keep pillorying them. If only they changed their tactics, acknowledged that they are not who they claim to be, and refrained from saying things that attract non-flattering responses, they could avert being burned. Many chose to make the same mistakes again; a reality that commenters leverage to have a good time. Enjoy your weekend!

CW, My Man! The Trappings of Power Good Sir. Seconds count in the Race and I’ll pick up my Second Place Trophy in the Ladies Room…I ain’t skeered of that Danger Zone!
I do think that some of the usual suspects are skeered to compete…pity…My ‘net is slow and they all get a ten (10) count.
A Rat of the Kong be upon you.
I forgot it was Friday…
That and was busy reading about how that lovely gentleman Franklin D. Roosevelt and his politburo tried to name the Hoover Dam Boulder Dam.
So the mostly peaceful destruction of history by the Dims has been a thing for a while now.
This is my shocked face.
Have a GREAT weekend y’all and all hail our WOT:FoF liege!
FIRST!?!?
Holy cow, I beat the King of Battle to the coveted FIRST!!! I don’t think I’ve ever done it before, at least not so close as four seconds! The dining hall is open as are all the shops, for all to enjoy! So is the trivia. Have a great week, and I promise not to lord it over TOO much.
DID YOU KNOW…?
Did a British company make a fortune selling a phony bomb detector?
By Commissioner Wretched

The Dog Days of Summer! If you’re a regular reader of this silliness, you already know why they’re called that. But for those just tuning in, here’s the short version:
Back in the day, ancients believed that during this part of the year, the Sun wasn’t the only star bringing light and heat to Earth. There was also Sirius, the “Dog Star,” the brightest star in the night sky then and now. Their belief that light and heat from Sirius was reaching Earth gave rise to the term “Dog Days.”
There. Now you’re up to date.
Since you are, let’s get to this week’s trivia, shall we? And don’t forget the book, Did You Know…? Yet Another Compendium of Useless Trivia, available at amazon.com!
Did you know …
… a horse has more than one horsepower? The term was coined in the 18th Century as a measurement of the rate at which work is done. One horsepower is currently measured at 745.7 watts, and one horse can actually produce about 15 horsepower. (I’m now sufficiently confused.)
… Santa Claus has a U.S. pilot’s license? Jolly Old St. Nick was issued a U.S. government pilot’s license in 1927, and the government also said runway lights would be kept on for him every Christmas Eve. (Well, good. I’d hate to think Santa was violating the law.)
… a stuffed animal was created that was modeled after a U.S. president? After the popularity of the teddy bear, named for Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), a toy company tried to capitalize on it by creating “Billy Possum,” a plush toy based on Roosevelt’s successor, William H. Taft (1857-1930). Though cute, the Taft toy never did take off. (Neither did Taft, come to think of it.)
… in the pupal stage of development, a caterpillar turns into total liquid before becoming a butterfly? The larva of the butterfly turns into a chrysalis, as we all know, and out comes the beautiful insect. But in between, it’s pretty gross. The caterpillar actually digests itself, disintegrating to a greenish goo. At that point, the cell division that will eventually be a beautiful butterfly takes place. (Pretty much ruined your whole opinion of butterflies, didn’t I?)
… researchers have found the most common mistake people make while flirting? It’s too much eye contact, according to the Social Issues Research Center. Their studies show that a non-romantic glance lasts 1.18 seconds, while a flirtatious glance can last 2-3 seconds – and anything longer than that is uncomfortable and just plain weird.
CW wrote (BTW, CW…Congrats On Being FIRST!):

Please Do Not Forget TRUMPY BEAR!

Where is the Biden Weasel?
More like the biden cockroach
I get stuffed with animals regularly. Not on the level of Taft mind you, I can still fit into a regular sized bath tub, tho the one here at Firebase Magnolia is a re-furbished cast iron claw footer that would probably hold Taft.
I’ve been compared to a chrysalis…a hot mess.
Anything longer than that is called “undressing her with your eyes”. FIFY It’s an acquired skill/super power, feature not a bug. I may have a Lady in Red in the back of my head but the woman in white is OAM.
… a British company made a fortune selling a fake bomb detector? Advanced Tactical Security and Communications, Ltd., or ATSC, created a device called the ADE 651 in the 1990s. Its developers said it would be capable of detecting various types of explosives from a long range, and it could also be programmed to find drugs, ivory, or other substances. The gizmos sold for $60,000 each, and governments in the Middle East invested millions in them. Problem – they didn’t work. In 2010, the manufacture and sale of the device was prohibited, and the owners of the company went to prison for fraud. The device was nothing more than a golf ball finder with various electronic parts added to it for effect. The ADE 651 did not even have a power source – the creators said the user’s own static electricity was enough to drive it. It was little more than a modern divining rod, authorities said when they shut the company down. (Boy, some people will buy anything! After all, I’m still selling trivia books!)
… a human could hold shut the jaws of an alligator with his bare hands? Alligators have a very powerful bite, but the muscles that open the animal’s jaws are relatively weak. It is possible for an adult human to hold an alligator’s jaws shut with bare hands and brute force. (Most people challenged by an alligator won’t remember that, however.)
CW wrote:

Yep. I learned THAT from watching Popeye! 😉 😎
43 Seconds. “Popeye VS Alligator”
That same cartoon taught me that if you rub Popeye on his stomach, he goes to sleep. (Or something like that.)
I bet them shysters found something buried when they got to the iron bar hotel…and it had balls but not golf balls. (ps buy the book(s))
I’ll let my Dawgs clamp down their jaws on them FL Gators come this fall. Let the Big Dawg Eat…oh…and RTR!
ROLL TIDE!
In a completely unrelated event, All Points Logistics is proud to announce that they have acquired exclusive North American distribution rights to the ADE 651 Explosive Detection System. In addition to detecting explosives, ivory, and narcotics, the All Points Logistics upgrades includes a feature that helps upper management identify mentally unstable employees who can easily be manipulated into defending senior management claims of military service on military blogs.
… there is a monastery in Greece where nothing female is allowed to enter? The Greek Monastery at Mount Athos prohibits women, as many do, but they carry it to the extreme: roosters may enter, but no hens; horses, but no mares; bulls, but no cows. Armed guards patrol the borders of the monastery to ensure that nothing female enters. This has been the monastery’s policy for more than 700 years. (Mother’s Day is not celebrated there, of course.)
… the United States is the only industrialized country in the world that taxes its citizens who live overseas? Even if that income is generated totally by working in a foreign country and they never return to America, they are subject to paying income taxes. (No comment. The IRS reads this column.)
… for a period of time, the money of the African nation of Zimbabwe was totally worthless? During the later years of the rule of President Robert Mugabe (1924-2019), he tried to stop a press critic of the nation’s incredible rate of hyperinflation by levying ridiculous taxes on the man’s newspaper. In retaliation, the publisher printed advertisements on Zimbabwe’s famous trillion-dollar bills, which were cheaper than actual blank paper. Mugabe ordered the Zimbabwean dollar discontinued soon after, replacing it primarily with U.S. dollars.
… a popular salad came about as a way to use leftovers? In 1926, Los Angeles restaurant owner Robert H. Cobb (1899-1970) was looking for a way to use up leftovers in the kitchen of the Brown Derby Restaurant. Cobb tossed together some avocado, celery, tomato, chives, watercress, hard-boiled eggs, chicken, bacon, and Roquefort cheese. The salad became a hit, and Cobb named it after himself – the Cobb salad. (Calling it “Leftover Salad” was not deemed a good idea, it seems.)
Now … you know!

Stolen Valor phony MoH / PH prosecuted in Pennsylvania.
[HARRISBURG – Attorney General Josh Shapiro today announced his Bureau of Consumer Protection and Office of Military and Veterans Affairs have settled a case against a Pennsylvania man for lying about his military service and violating the Stolen Valor Act.
Tapan Patel, of Bucks County,
allegedly made misrepresentations of his military service
for the purpose of obtaining employment.
Patel was in fact a former Junior Enlisted servicemember
who never served in combat. When applying for jobs, Patel was dishonest about his status as an officer,
lied about combat service, and misrepresented various awards and decorations
including the Medal of Honor, Purple Heart, and “Navy War Medal,”
which is not an actual award of the U.S. Navy.
“This man’s decision to lie about military service and awards for personal gain is disgraceful,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “His actions not only violate the Stolen Valor Act, they dishonor the heroic women and men who have sacrificed to serve our country and who have been awarded the military’s highest awards. By holding him accountable, my Office is working to protect the honors our veterans have earned.”]

“Rebels at Vicksburg Vowed Revenge Against the Yankee Who Killed Their Camel”
https://www.military.com/history/rebels-vicksburg-vowed-revenge-against-yankee-who-killed-their-camel.html
“In the late 1850s, the U.S. Army experimented with using camels as pack animals in the American Southwest, where horses and mules routinely suffered from dehydration. Camels from the Ottoman Empire were shipped to the United States in 1853. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis ordered they be tested on routes across the desert to California.”
“The camel experiment was a success, but the Army was wholly uninterested in camels. Before there could be an internal struggle about it, the Civil War broke out in 1861. The secretary of war became president of the Confederacy, and the idea died out. The U.S. Army wasn’t the only one interested in testing camels; that’s how a dromedary — a one-humped camel — ended up in the Confederate Army.”

Hey, Open Thread. Drive on, Airborne.
First 27th
SITREP on the chicago cease fire.
So far no shootings this afternoon from IPN, and their were 5 shootings overnight. Will see what happens this weekend.
The cease fire is only 9-2100. Put me down for 55 wounded and 24 dead. In case of tie the Majority dead will be “children” 18-21.
It appears as though Jackson, MS will surrender the number one spot per capita in 2023. The capitol police took over most of the city in March and the homicide rate dropped like a rock. How dare the governor do that.
That’s why I put down the no shootings in the afternoon. I should have said that their weren’t any shootings from 9-2100 hours. Looks like the gangs are keeping their promise
Shootings between 2100 and 0900 are below the hard deck and do not count 😉
Das racissss
This Chicago Cease Fire policy will have disastrous results every Fall and Spring when clocks are moved for Daylight Saving Time. Homie may show up an hour early or an hour late to the mostly peaceful gunfight.

The White House KNOWS whose cocaine that was.
It appears they’re pimping another panic wave over a new COVID “Variant” likely the ID-10-T strain.
When you purchased the Red Hat Software, you initialed on the contract that you were declining the rust proof undercoating, against all advice that the sales representative provided you. Sounds like you have buyer’s remorse.
Ran into a drunk “Special Operations Navy SEAL” at my hotel bar who served 3 years in the Navy and deployed to Thailand and Afghanistan and killed 132 people. He was impressing the ladies with his daring do.
He beat a hasty retreat when the questions began like rain. Trying that in front of a retired E9, O4 and DA Civilian (also prior service) didn’t go as well as he hoped.
So, just wondering about this: if the director of FBI is found in contempt by Congress, who arrests him? Because isn’t that his job? Does he have to arrest himself? Asking for a friend…
Ask Eric Holder how that works.
Congress files articles of impeachment, nothing happens, the director resigns and goes to suck off the teat of those he failed to prosecute when in office. Swamp as usual….

You know if Biden were drunk all the time it would provide the perfect explanation for everything.
Drunks lie and brag all the time. They get lost in their own house, tripping stumble downstairs, forget who they were talking to or where they are, have no real empathy for anybody, are prone to the power of suggestion, get angry and go off for no reason, can’t tell when people are really making fun of them.
Really it’s the perfect explanation.
Any word on what caused the f-18 crash yesterday? Sadly another pilot lost his life.

1940-00-789-2149 Punt, Plastic 14 Foot

Punt…
“A long, narrow, flat-bottomed boat, square or pointed at both ends and propelled with a long pole, used on inland waters chiefly for recreation.”
Wherry?
😉😎
Thank You, Claw/Supply Daddy!
What piqued my interest was the other day when SCPO USN Ret said he noticed a Punt tied up to a pier while painting the boat was going on. I had never heard of a Punt before other than a kick in football, so I did a little investigating. Turns out the Navy has 10-, 12-, and 14-foot metal punts, as well as the plastic one I referenced. They also have a 9-foot plastic MK2 Dinghy.
What was the most fun, though, was entering “Navy Punt Boat” into a Google-Fu image search engine and seeing the first picture to pop up being that of two Sailors utilizing a Punt to scrape paint off the ship at the water line and I said “Now there’s a recruiter’s wet dream if there ever was one.” / s
Claw, the only time we heard of punt boats was hearing and reading about the Brits “punting in the river.”
We did not connect the dots until you addtessed it…
We found this…Interesting…🙂
“What Is A Punt Boat”
https://maritimepage.com/what-is-a-punt-boat/
“A punt boat is a flat-bottomed watercraft that is designed for use in small rivers and shallow water. It is propelled by a pole, which is pushed against the riverbed by the punter. The boat has a square-cut bow and a broad front, which makes it ideal for carrying cargo or passengers.”
And then we found this…
https://www.shapeways.com/product/LTRJ6SFGA/us-navy-12ft-punt-work-boat-1-700
“Small boat widely used on larger warships for maintenance, repair and repaint purposes. Usually stored inside of a larger boat on board. A usual sight in the 30es and early WWII, it would add a bit of realism to any prewar and early war US capital ship. Carried by most US Navy cruisers, and by the Ranger, Wasp, and Yorktown-class carriers until 1942.”
Thank You again for sharing, Claw! We learned somthing new today!
It’s lacking a punt gun.
And here I was thinking it was the number of times Navy would have to punt the ball this season. Who knew?

Rest In Peace, LTJG Robert William Barker:
“Bob Barker, US Navy Veteran, Dead At 99”
“The Longtime “The Price Is Right” Host Served During World War II.”
https://taskandpurpose.com/culture/bob-barker-navy-veteran/
“Bob Barker, the iconic host of “The Price Is Right” for nearly 50 years, died Saturday, Aug. 26 at the age of 99. Alongside his long career in television, Barker was a U.S. military veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as an aviator during World War II.”
“Robert William Barker was born on Dec. 12, 1923. Before his service, Barker grew up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in North Dakota. His father was a quarter Sioux and Barker was listed as and considered himself part Sioux. After the United States entered World War II, Barker enlisted in 1943. He chose to join the U.S. Navy because, by his own admission, he saw a photo of a naval aviator in full dress whites and was impressed by the man’s appearance.”
“I thought, ‘If I’m going to go to war, I want to go looking like that guy,’” Barker told CNN in a 2013 interview.”
“In that same interview, Barker said that he had never even been on a plane before enlisting, nor had he seen the ocean. But he joined the Navy. He earned his aviator wings, but the war ended before he was deployed and Barker did not see combat.”
“He regularly ended each episode of “The Price Is Right” telling viewers: “Don’t forget to have your pets spayed or neutered!”

“Paper Straws Contain Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ Potentially Harmful To Health: Study”
https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/paper-straws-contain-toxic-forever-chemicals-potentially-harmful-health-study
“Paper straws, which are being pushed across the U.S. as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic versions, may contain “forever chemicals” that are harmful to both humans and the environment and were observed more often than in a sample of plastic straws….”
“Belgian researchers tested 39 straw brands from restaurants and retailers for synthetic chemicals known as poly and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The study found that the majority of straws contained those chemicals, but they were most common in those made from paper and bamboo.”
“The chemicals are referred to as “forever chemicals” as they can remain for thousands of years in the environment. The chemicals have been associated with health issues including thyroid disease, increased cholesterol, liver damage and kidney and testicular cancer and can harm the environment as well.”
“Of the brands tested, 90% of the paper straws contained PFAS, compared to 80% of bamboo straws, 75% of plastic straws and 40% of glass straws. None of the steel straws contained the chemicals.”
“The study comes as European countries, and some parts of the U.S., have pushed to transition away from plastic straws to alternatives in efforts to be more environmentally friendly. States including California and New York have slapped bans on single-use plastic straws in restaurants.”

I had to imagine it’s way too early for Halloween, unless it was some sort of college initiation or fraternity prank, the way shit is these days I’m gonna think it’s the new normal for some creatures on this blue marble.
