Shots fired during vehicle burglary in Clewiston

Special to Lake Okeechobee News
CLEWISTON — On August 22, 2023, at approximately 4:50 a.m., a homeowner on the 1000 block of Bayberry Loop in Clewiston, Florida observed three males on his home camera system burglarizing his vehicles. The homeowner grabbed a firearm, fired three to four shots, and went after the suspects who fled on foot between neighboring homes. The vehicle that the suspects came in was parked at the edge of the homeowner’s property.

Clewiston Police officers arrived and noted a white Nissan sedan parked on the edge of the property with a male in the rear passenger seat attempting to conceal himself and a second male on the floorboard of the vehicle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A computer check revealed that the white Nissan sedan was reported stolen by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
The learning curve is steep, but at least try. Damn.
Door shooter from the other day. Things are not always as they first seem.
Do Bowie knives count as swords?
One fellow cowboy, upon seeing the one I made and wear, asked “So, what was it like in the Roman Legion?”
Odie
Was he commenting on the knife, or referencing your age.
Odie
Forgot to add 😁
11B-Mailclerk
Probably both.
Knife laws vary hugely between states. For example in Texas it was illegal up until 2017 to carry a knife in public with a blade longer than 5.5″. A number of other states changed their laws around the same time.
fm2176
It surprised me to find out that automatic knives (“switchblades”) are legal in most states: State Laws Regarding Auto-Open Knives | American Knife and Tool Institute (akti.org). Last I checked (in the early 2000s), they were limited to LE and military.
5JC
That was another “movie law” like Teflon bullet bans.
Yup
Change ” law abiding citizen ”
To
“Pissed off American who finally has had enough.”
Good thing those lads were released to their parents. Would have been a shame if they missed choir practice.
No comment…Call my lawer.
Do straight, white, males have any rights left?
Lubs me a long knife. Prolly as much as our beloved AW1Ed lubs to send The Gunny Bunny down these rabbit hole linkys. Well played, Good Sir…Well played.
Some people, no matter how old or young, just need to (be made to) “disappear”, on a dark and moonless night.
Follow the Three Esses.
It would take an act of God to reform them.
Do you think door killer is gonna get his damage deposit back after punching 13 ventilation holes?
Odie
He will probably hear that ventilation holes are limited to 10, so no deposit return.
The stupid SOB should be thankful that nobody in another apartment was hit if they were home.
When the media showed up for an interview, he should have dummied up. Or would that be FJB dummied up as in no comment.
5JC
I would put that door on eBay.
That Florida shooting sounds like a bad shoot. Home owner leaves his house and starts firing at the car thieves?? I didn’t see if the perps were armed but the home owner should have called the Police before leaving his house or better off just not leaving his home. Leaving his home and opening up on the perps, ????????
Forgot to add in off topic SITREP on the chicago cease fire agreement. Nothing doing yesterday between the 0900-2100 hours with the action starting between 2200-0818 hours with 9 shootings. Will check IPN texts all day today to see if the cease fire agreement holds……
5JC
Negative, I’m showing a souble shooting at the baseball game Friday prior to 2100.
Double
Thunderstixx
I was wondering about that.
Thanks 5JC, I get my info from Incident paging network and sometimes it’s hit or miss by the guys listening to the PD/FD scanner traffic. I never received an IPN text over that one. Like I mentioned, it’s hit or miss. Where I live in Palm Beach County, Fl, PBCFR operates on the trunked 800meg freq. which is hard to pick up on some scanners since Mototola increased the transmission speed. PBCFR is the only Fl. County i listen to on my scanner and I don’t get that much IPN PBCFR texts due to some of the equipment the IPN monitors use.
I like this site: Chicago Crime, Murder & Mayhem | Criminal Infographics | HeyJackass! | Illustrating Chicago Values
It’s full of eye-catching graphics and seems pretty accurate.
5JC
That is a pretty good site. They have one for Detroit too. With 2008 shot this year so far the police accounted for the 8 or .4% off the total. They need to be defunded for their raciss antics.
Skivvy Stacker
And in Chicago, where you’re in more danger of being shot than you would be in Ukraine just now, it seems that the average number of police involved shootings per year since 2016 has been about FIVE.
Damn trigger happy cops.
5JC
It is difficult to tell from the article. In Florida you are allowed to use reasonable force or the threat of force to protect your property. Since the homeowner never hit anybody, He could make the argument that these were merely warning shots, which is a type of force. Bringing to play the numbers that he had against him, he could make a reasonable argument. I would hate to have to rely on that in a court of law, because it is shaky at best.
When dealing with a car burglar gang always assume that they are armed. Normally they will hit a whole neighborhood. It is very likely that they will steal your neighbor’s gun from their unlocked vehicle. I would say it’s much better to let the police handle that. Normally the children on night shift will be more than happy to go catch a car burglar.
Odie
Just an idea, but if any of the gang of car thieves has a car registered in their name, that car gets sent to the crusher. If it’s the baby’s mama’s car, she shouldn’t have loaned it out. Even a family members car wouldn’t be safe.
Or, just hang them like horse thieves of old.
A year or to, I heard The Port St Lucie PD Chief on WFTL 850AM telling the residents to keep their car doors locked because peeps were breaking/opening cars doors looking for firearms.. If you dont have a CCP down here in Florida, you can keep a handgun in your car but not carry concealed. Am on my 3rd CCP which you don’t need anymore to carried concealed. Took my first concealed carry class back in 2008 in the city of Delray Beach, Fl. I thought that warning shots were a no no down here.
In my high school days, abbreviated by a desire to walk out of the first day of Junior Year and start working full-time, I hung out with the punks, skateboarders, and graffiti artists of Richmond, VA. I sucked at graffiti, so I never even “tagged” up the city, much less commit any other crimes, but the guys I hung out with knew some of the crew that was going around Oregon Hill and other neighborhoods ripping off car stereos. One day, I went to a buddy’s house, and he had a “friend” who was looking to sell a few guns he’d acquired. I was amazed at how big the (from what I recall) 9mm and .357 were but knew enough to pass on even touching them. At the time, my gun experience was limited to watching Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I never went back there, but some of my friends seemed to have an endless supply of in-dash cassette and even CD players.
Needless to say, car burglars are very likely armed. Down this way, we have a lot of folks that keep a “truck gun”. In his first year in office, the local Sheriff even had his truck broken into and a gun stolen. At my work, we constantly have people coming in to get a serial number, or to replace a gun, usually with something like a Taurus or similarly lower-priced gun. Thieves have made breaking into cars almost a science, immediately going to the center console where most people keep their guns. Me? Why have a car/truck gun, when I can carry a couple on my person to start blasting, a la Danny DeVito? 😃
It is always a bad idea to talk to the press. Especially about any dispute that is likely to end up in court.
Odie
If I ever get stopped for enthusiastically celebrating speed, I am so using this.
11B-Mailclerk
“Warp”
11B-Mailclerk
Radar school zone cop, angry: “Do you know how fast you were f###ing going?!?”
11B- bicyclist: “No sir. But I bet it would shock the both of us.”
Cop: “Get out of here before I have to figure out how to write this up! Slow the F### down!”
I later figured out my 120 rpm pedal cadence in 12th gear was 42mph. I was over that.
11B-Mailclerk
My bike fit behind my rack, and weirdly no 1SG ever said anything about it, nor tearing it down and rebuilding it in my room.
Working on my car in the barracks parking lot, however…. 1SG: BarkBarkBark!
Then he noticed I had pushed it onto a tarp. Mostly to avoid rolling in all the existing drip grunge, but between that tarp and the large bag of cat litter / dry sweep, and the parts-tools-trash in the trunk and back seat, all he said then was “Damn. Go fucking teach the mechanics that.” After that, nada.
