Aramark apologizes for ‘unintentional insensitivity’ after serving students chicken and watermelon on the first day of Black History Month
Students at a New York middle school were served chicken and waffles with a side of watermelon on the first day of Black History Month, prompting the school and food vendor Aramark to apologize.
The school lunch in question was served to students at Nyack Middle School on February 1, a decision that upset some students and parents. As Insider’s Angelica Cheyenne reported, foods like watermelon have often been rolled into stereotypes against Black Americans.
“They were asking people if they want watermelon and I remember being confused because it’s not in season,” Honore Santiago, a student at Nyack Middle School, told WABC.
She added: “Didn’t think the company was capable of making us feel bad…especially the kids my color.”
Principal David Johnson called the contested school lunch an “unfortunate situation” in a statement to WABC, but ultimately blamed Aramark. Aramark works with schools to organize school menus and provide lunch.
“The offering of chicken & waffles as an entree with watermelon as a dessert on the first day of Black History Month was inexcusably insensitive and reflected a lack of understanding of our district’s vision to address racial bias,” Johnson told the outlet.
Johnson added that the administration contacted Aramark to discuss initiatives to prevent a similar situation from cropping up again.
“We are extremely disappointed by this regrettable situation and apologize to the entire Nyack community for the cultural insensitivity displayed by our food service provider,” Johnson told WABC.
Aramark also released a statement to WABC that the chicken, waffle, and watermelon were not meant to be “a cultural meal.”
“We apologize for the unintentional insensitivity shown on February 1, the first day of Black History Month. While our menu was not intended as a cultural meal, we acknowledge that the timing was inappropriate, and our team should have been more thoughtful in its service,” a statement from Aramrak read.
The statement continued that serving the school lunch on the first day of Black History Month was a “mistake,” adding that Aramark will partner with the district to provide school employees with “training that aligns to the Nyack School District’s vision and commitment to equity-driven work.”
“This was a mistake and does not represent the values of our company, and we are committed to doing better in the future,” the statement read. “We believe this will provide a good learning opportunity to deepen understanding on the impact of systemic biases and negative stereotypes concerning the African-American Community.”
Aramark’s Instagram account soon became swarmed with disgruntled social media users, with some people calling out the company in the comment section of its most recent post.
Representatives for Aramark did not immediately reply to Insider’s request for comment.
This is not the first time Aramark has faced backlash over its lunch menus.
The New York Post reported in April 2019 that New York University cut ties with Aramark after it served ribs, collard greens, and Kool-aid during Black History Month in 2018.
Other institutions have apologized for similar menu fails, including The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, which served a “Juneteenth Watermelon Salad” in June 2022.

Miami PD savaged for Black History Month squad car

A Black History Month-themed police car in Miami draws criticism
When Miami officials unveiled a special police car in honor of Black History Month, it was met with cheers and a loud applause. But the fanfare proved to not last long.
The newly designed cruiser has been under criticism since its debut on Thursday, with critics calling it tone deaf and ill-timed in light of the brutal beating of Tyre Nichols by police officers in Memphis, Tenn., last month. Others described it as an empty gesture attempting to minimize the struggles of the Black community.
“The Miami police car misses the mark on celebrating Black history by highlighting the wrong continent,” Florida state Rep. Dotie Joseph, who serves parts of Miami, told NPR.
The cruiser was made public — along with a Black History Month-themed badge — on Thursday in front of the city’s Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum. A few days earlier, another patrol car designed to celebrate Black history was under backlash in Columbus, Ohio.
In Miami, it’s not the first time that law enforcement has created a themed cruiser. There have been special patrol cars made for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Autism Awareness and Hispanic Heritage Month.
“In keeping with the tradition, we’ve had a lot of officers and members come up to us and say ‘Hey how come we don’t have one for Black History,” ‘ Miami Police Sgt. Stanley Jean-Poix said on a panel Friday in response to the criticism.
He added that no tax dollars went into funding the cruiser and instead, it was paid for by the Miami Community Police Benevolent Association.
Artist says the cruiser design was about unity and paying homage to Africa
Unlike the typical Miami police car, which is white and blue in color, this special edition is coated black with red, yellow and green stripes — colors commonly used to represent pan-African solidarity.
The vehicle is also embellished with four raised fists, an outline of the African continent and the words “Miami Police Supports Black History Month.”
Lavish N Looney (Lump), the Miami-based artist who created the special design for the patrol car, said that unity and paying homage to Africa were major themes in the artwork. He said he went through several designs before a version was finalized, adding that earlier drafts included images of Martin Luther King Jr. and former President Barack Obama.
Lump said he stands by the police car despite some of the backlash it received.
“Two things can exist at one time,” Lump told NPR. “There could be still more work done between the police department and civilians while police officers and civilians come together to celebrate Black history.”
Lump said he grew up in a community where people were “not fans of the police,” so he understands patrol cars can be intimidating. His hope is that this cruiser will be more approachable to community members.

A new Martin Luther King-themed cop car is shockingly tone-deaf

Not to be outdone, Columbus PD also decided to celebrate Black History Month with a hideously ugly virtue signal.
The Columbus Division of Police’s Twitter account announced the new police car Wednesday evening in a post that included a video of an SUV adorned with the license plate “History 1” and a painted “Black History Month” logo. One of the rear windows displays a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Be the peace you wish to see in the world.” Optimistic music plays in the background and we hear excerpts from — you guessed it — King’s “I have a dream” speech.

Funeral home employee found dead hours after accusation of sexual abuse of a corpse
A Florida funeral home worker has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, hours after a co-worker allegedly caught him sexually abusing a corpse.
The unusual turn of events took place Tuesday morning.
The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office told WEAR a funeral home employee called them to report walking in on the co-worker sexually abusing a corpse.
Deputies got to the Oak Lawn Funeral Home near Pensacola, but the person who was accused had left.
Later in the morning, deputies found the suspect’s vehicle at an intersection.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect was found dead near the vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The name of that person has not been released.
Neither has information on the victim of the alleged abuse.
An investigation is now underway to uncover exactly what happened.

How do you hide a stolen pink semi-truck? Duo tried red spray paint, Florida cops say
It’s tough to easily hide a stolen Peterbilt semi-truck when it’s bright pink, but two suspected thieves tried their best by using countless cans of red spray paint, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in Northeast Florida.
The ambitious plan might have worked — had it not been carried out in a Days Inn hotel parking lot along Interstate 95, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
“On Monday, January 30 … a concerned citizen contacted FCSO Communications regarding two subjects spray painting a Peterbilt semi-tractor in the back corner of the parking lot,” the sheriff’s office reported.
“Upon the arrival of law enforcement, the male and female fled on foot into the wood line and began running southbound on Interstate 95.”
Deputies gave chase, catching the woman in minutes and the man two hours later.
It was then that investigators discovered the $280,000 semi-truck “had been stolen just hours earlier from Columbia County, Florida.”
“The semi-tractor’s original color is pink, and the subjects were in the process of spray painting the stolen semi-tractor to conceal its original color when deputies arrived,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The semi-tractor’s GPS had been disabled and removed but was found nearby in the woods.”
The suspects, who are from Tampa, have been charged with “resisting arrest without violence, grand theft-motor vehicle and felony criminal mischief,” officials said.
The 28-year-old man faces additional charges of possession of a removed vehicle identification number and possession of fentanyl, officials said.
“Thanks to another concerned citizen calling after ‘See Something, Say Something’ our deputies were able to … recover a stolen semi and return it to its rightful owner,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in the release.

In defense of the now former funeral home employee, most of his sexual partners have just laid there as if they were dead.
Yes, Hack Stone is on line, for the time being. Currently posting from Joint Base Anacostia- Bolling. Sure would wish that the Deplorable Moderators of This Ain’t Hell would stop sending Hack’s post to the trash bin. And if they go back to the last two Weekend Open Threads, a review from the judges box would give Hack title as first to comment.
Welp, finally found the source of that incessant whine that seems to be permeating thru-out the threads. Maybe the server doesn’t recognize your posts since they aren’t being scrawled in crayon on the back of a Bill of Lading from a shipping invoice detailing the shipment of obsolete Red Hat Software? Or maybe the paste from your copy is gumming up the works? Could be the posts are lost in the plethora of SPoTW articles? Have you considered spending less time on clandestine meetings with Elaine Ricci and more time on the hunt for the Coveted EARNED never awarded, FIRST (ht 2 ChipNASA) on the TAH Friday WOT? Patience, Grasshopper, only 77 more years until your Y3K software kicks in.
Teh Stoopid…still burning like a gas stove.
“just laid there as if they were dead.” How many of them was he married to?
Y3K is in 977 years.
My 9 got stuck in Hack Stone paste. Copy?
Well, Marines are known to eat crayons so maybe they dip them in a jar of paste?
No, actually they aren’t. That is just funny to people who served in inferior services.
Ol’ Poe is of the opinion that the only reason chicken and waffles is on the Aramark menu is due to the widely held belief that it is, in fact, a dish popularized by black culture. And serving a culturally appropriate dish on the opening day of a month designated to honor that culture seems perfectly legitimate to Poe.
Black activists want their culture to be recognized and popularized but when it is, they cry foul.
Hey, at least they didn’t serve ’em Colt 45 “Forties”… 🙄
Exactly. These are the same types that think that calling a football team “The Chiefs” is somehow offensive to Natives.
Chicken and waffles are good. It’s a racist stereotype to say black people like good food?
It’s like when they renamed the Washington Redskins, I hear word that next, they’re planning on renaming the Dallas Cowboys. The new planned name is “The Opossums” because they play dead at home and get killed out on the road!
It reminds of how years ago white Liberals were flipping out about Army helicpotors being named after Native American tribes. What they failed to realize is the tribe is asked for their permission beforehand, the tribal elders bless off on it and are even at the Christening ceremony.
IMO White Liberals are the source of most of the problems we have today.
Whether popularized by “black culture” (whatever that is) or not, Chicken & Waffles is one of my favorite brunches. So, I guess I’m guilty of “cultural appropriation” because I enjoy two food stuffs that just happen to go well together, regardless of skin tone.
I continue to be dismayed/amused/entertained by the idiotic lengths to which virtue-signaling SJWs will go to avoid being labeled “racist.”
I went to Africa, they ate chicken and tropical fruit there. Is that racist?
People just looking to be offended… If your life is so fragile that you get upset over this like this, you really shouldn’t contaminate the gene pool by reproducing..
And I’m gonna claim cultural appropriation, because chicken and waffles (pan roasted, not fried, and butter / powdered sugar, not syrup) is a Pennsylvania Dutch thing…
Just imagine the meltdown if someone painted a civil rights struggle commemorative Fire Truck….
But, of course:

Wow, that’s some Politician Grade stupid!!! Hey, WHAT IF they put White Officers in those custom-painted cruisers, maybe they were meant to patrol liberal white neighborhoods?
The first couple are great examples of what happens when you try to appease the woke mob.. nothing you do will be good enough or correct, and they’ll rip you for trying… When they shout racist, they’re really just referring to themselves, and at the same time, diminishing what the word actually means… Morons!
When I worked for Uncle, some of the black employees would serve a soul food luncheon during black history week (it started out as just one week). Some people joined in, others did not. Nobody seemed to care one way or the other.
[…] This ain’t Hell… has stupid people of the week […]
The Pirates Cove
Fucking snowflakes, and the attention-whoring virtue signalers who enable them, should be shot.
I bet no one in that first article would have gone apeshit if they had brought in KFC. Almost every single commercial for KFC that I have seen was loaded with black people in it. Apparently they haven’t noticed.
