Florida AG James Uthmeier sues Jacksonville for $5M over ‘illegal gun registry’

By Michelle Vecerina
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced a lawsuit against the city of Jacksonville on Tuesday, alleging the municipal government maintained an “illegal gun registry” for nearly two years under the administration of Mayor Donna Deegan.

The state is seeking a $5 million judgment against the city, citing a violation of Florida law that strictly prohibits government entities from keeping records of privately owned firearms or their owners.

“The Second Amendment is not a second-class right, and we will use all power of this office to protect the rights of Floridians,” Uthmeier said in a video statement.

The ‘log book’ allegations
According to Uthmeier, the illegal practices began in July 2023, shortly after Mayor Deegan took office. City management reportedly approved a security policy requiring officers to record the names, ages, and state-issued ID numbers of visitors carrying firearms into city buildings, along with details on the type of weapon.

The attorney general alleged that the city maintained this registry until April 2025. The practice came to a head when an individual legally carrying a firearm was reportedly denied entry to a city building after refusing to provide the requested information to security officers.
