GOP Candidate Under Fire for a Claim He Was Under Fire

| October 6, 2022

Tyler Kistner

Several news outlets are reporting that one of GOP candidate Tyler Kistner’s Political Action Committees (PAC) had to pull an ad falsely claiming that he saw combat as a Marine, but he did not.

GOP super PAC falsely claims congressional candidate saw combat as Marine
Tyler Kistner’s military service was also an issue in his previous campaigns for Congress

Andrew Feinberg

A Republican political action committee had to pull a television advertisement promoting Minnesota congressional candidate Tyler Kistner because the ad falsely claimed he was a combat veteran.

According to the non-profit news site Minnesota Reformer, the Congressional Leadership Fund advertisement described Mr Kistner as having served “four combat deployments.” It aired on local television stations and streaming services for just one day before it was pulled down.

The veterans group VoteVets — which has endorsed Mr Kistner’s opponent, Representative Angie Craig — asked for the ad to be taken down in a late September letter, but a spokesperson for the CLF says the group made the request on its own after noticing that the “wrong version” was sent to television stations, just under three weeks before the veterans group asked for the ad to be pulled.

The Reformer noted that Mr Kistner’s overseas tours as a member of the US Marine Corps were served only in non-combat areas, including Japan and Korea.

One article puts the blame on the PAC and says they sent the wrong version of the writeup forward, while another article claims that Kistner made the claims himself.

PACs do stupid things and get things wrong a lot. Show me a video of Kistner making claims and I’d be a lot more curious.

Skivvy Stacker

They must have pulled them quick; I didn’t see them on any of the stations up here. And I don’t think Kistner is the one who made the claims, as he hasn’t gone out of his way to make a big deal out of his status as a Veteran up to now.
I will be damned if I’ll vote for Angie Craig. She’s a 100% behind Joe Biden democreep.

MarineDad61

Skivvy Stacker,
After some internet roto-rooting…
Kistner makes a BIG deal about his veteran status,
especially back in 2020, and still in 2022,
but uses carefully worded phrases to describe his service,
while touting “Special Ops.”

Can’t find anything where he says “war” or “combat”.
But others picking up that football and running it in
would be no surprise at all,
including from his own campaign team,
based on the pics Kistner shows, and his choice of words.

5JC

But he was actually doing just that, coordinating hit teams on terrorists in Africa.

MarineDad61

5JC,
Yep. Exactly.
But all the self promotion NEVER mentions Africa nor Libya.
It’s left unsaid, and vague.
More, the pictures are clearly made to resemble
(or be confused with)
Iraq and/or Afghanistan.

It would have been easier to POINT OUT
all his honorable and not so easy service.

5JC

I don’t feel responsible for what other people think about my service. If I know someone is wrong I might correct them. If they have a question about something I said I will clear it up. That appears to be what is happening here. I don’t see any clear attempt to mislead people here. I don’t do self-promotion but I am not running for office either. Short of anything new it seems much ado about nothing.

MarineDad61

5JC,
Uncovered and laid out by Raw Story yesterday.
Laid out below in a new comment.
He said it.

Yeah count me in on standing by…

This is not nearly as egregious or as personally obvious as ole J.R.

The Political Wire comments are cancer, but there are some gems. Like this one posted by “Raven”, whose information I can’t verify.

Don’t forget that two instances of his “combat” experience were: in a March 2020 candidate forum, Kistner said “I’ve been on the wrong end of a loaded weapon.” -and- “I’ve had guns drawn on me overseas in defense of our nation.”

In fact, both referred to when he got into an argument with one of the allied military commanders, who pulled a pistol on him.

“Ultimately, the argument was resolved and nobody was hurt,” [Kistner campaign consultant Billy] Grant said. “No weapon was fired during this situation.”

This does not come within miles of the meaning of “combat”… particularly since no *enemy force* was involved.

When I was “over there” I took a round that was meant for my buddy.

He was in the bathroom when the waitress brought his drinks, so I paid for them.

There are many among us who have shared this experience. Although in my case, my buddy was in the bathroom when the waitress brought his drinks, so I drank them.

When I was in Iraq two captains famously drew down on each other over a basketball game. One ended up as a bus driver in Kuwait and I don’t know what happened to the other.

Roh-Dog

Think I ‘member this! Was it on Liberty in the 2007-09 time frame, maybe 101st?

Those incidences spread like wildfire on Joedotcom.

5JC

Indeed it may have been in 2007 at Camp Liberty. I wasn’t witness to it myself, however I did run into one of the alleged parties and he was indeed driving a bus. So I asked the question “Who the fuck did you piss off?”

Wiz

The head shaker is they sent out the “wrong version”. How many versions were there?

26Limabeans

Brylcreem?

MarineDad61

26L,
Even better,
sand resistant wheeled and track vehicle gear grease.

jeff LPH 3 63-66

I still use Brylcreem when I get dressed up to go out for dinner and dancing, and speaking of dancing, how about the Turbans waxing “When You Dance”, 1955 on the Herald label.

Great song jeff.

Off-topic, but… Russians mobilized complain about conditions:

5JC

They will stop complaining after they are dead.

Hack Stone

It could be worse. They could have been exposed to toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune.

Green Thumb

Or exposed to All-Points Logistics.

Skivvy Stacker

If I hear any more of those damned Camp Lejeune Contaminated Water Settlement commercials, I’m going to drink MORE of those damn chemicals, I swear to god.
I already KNOW about Camp Lejeune; I was THERE.
You don’t have to tell ME about it. And I’ll be damned if I do anything to make you law firms any money on my body.

E-4 Mafia For Life

Do you or someone you know suffer from mesothelioma?
Maybe Camp Lejeune stored the water in asbestos containers.
After all, asbestos is a mineral and maybe the military produced its own mineral water.
That’s why they include powdered beverage mix in MRE’s.

From the linked Minnesota Reformer article:

‘In the run-up to the 2020 GOP nominating convention, Kistner called himself “the most decorated military member” in the race. One of his Republican opponents, Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Erika Cashin, called on Kistner to release his DD214 form — military service records that would indicate whether he served in armed combat.

Initially, Kistner declined, citing the need for confidentiality, telling the Prior Lake American newspaper, “Even basic details could help foreign adversaries and put other service members at risk.”’

(Bold emphasis is mine)

Here we go again: in my opinion, it looks like Kistner is implying that his DD-214 is somehow “classified”. WTF.

— SIGH —

As a fellow Marine, I would like to support Mr. Kistner, but after seeing that quote, I smell bullshit.

5JC

Can’t speak to the accuracy of this article but it sounds like he took it all the way to the line without actually crossing over. I wouldn’t have but I’m not running for office either.

https://www.rawstory.com/gop-candidate-tyler-kistner-has-repeatedly-suggested-he-saw-combat-but-he-didnt/

MarineDad61

Mick,
Lt. Col. Erika Cashin had him nailed down,
and he slithered away.

Not this time.
She’s vindicated,
at least for being the 1st to hold him accountable.

Rumor has it Korea is hard…. on the liver.

Friends don’t let friends Soju.

(Seems like this may be yet another reason why PACs need to be held underwater until the bubbles stop, in Minecraft)

5JC

Never been there myself but I hear it can be hard on the plumbing as well. More than a few guys came back with leaks and drips. Can’t imagine the PTSD from that.

Teh Soju Experience!

With the advent of computer aided brewing/distilling, soju is now both cheap AND consistent. (Capitalism rules, take that North Korea!) All Korean alcohol now, in fact… awesome!

Regardless of how this pans out, this Marine will always have a bright future doing ads for Colgate.

Hack Stone

He did a combat tour with the Colgate Cavity Patrol.

USMC Steve

Not trusting anything the socialist VoteVets has to say about anything.

Vote Vets = Turds.

MarineDad61

USMC Steve & Green Thumb,
Despite their blatant liberal bent,
VoteVets got it right this time.

No doorag, no shades, no vest, so it looks like Tyler is AJ fukin squared away as apple pie. Know what I mean Jellybean……………….

MarineDad61

Speaking of DD214,
I’m about to received a partial DD-214 on the Book of the Fake,
from a friend o’ friend o’ friend,
when they rejected a prospective tenant rental application,
but retained the dubious looking DD-214.

Hack Stone

A DD-214 for renting an apartment? Is the location inside the basement of CONTROL Headquarters?

Hack Stone’s uncle was a retired FBI agent (back when they were the good guys). He ran a polygraph service and did some background investigations. Uncle Joe was a Korean War Army ranger, so he was familiar with how the military operates. He was doing a background on a guy claiming honorable service in our beloved Marine Corps. Said “Marine” provided a certificate from the AFEES (now known as MEPS) signed by some Marine Officer congratulating him on enlisting. They are the enlisting equivalent of the NDSM, everyone gets one, they just run the Xerox copier and rubber stamp. (Full disclosure, Poppa Stone framed Hack’s certificate and hung it in his office). The weird thing is that the guy also gave him a copy of his discharge papers (not sure if it was the DD-214 or some other document). The kicker is that it was signed by the same guy.

Hack Stone

Uncle Joe asked what are the odds that the same guy who swore him in would be the same guy who separated him. You all know that answer. The same odds that daniel Bernath would make it to the runway without running out of fuel.

MarineDad61

Hack Stone,
DD-214 for “veterans preference” over other tenant applications,
to impress a local landlord, and get the apartment over others.

It didn’t work.

Hack Stone

Did the prospective tenant relate the hardships of his life as a short, stocky, slow witted bald man.

FuzeVT

Why is this so hard? Just say what you did. In a world where so few join the service, even just being a total POG is better than most.

Sure, I wish I could have been an Scuba diving airborne sniper pilot, but I wasn’t. I got to do some cool stuff, not as cool as others, and I’m ok with that. Why? Because I aint’s got no choice! I wasn’t one of those guys and telling people so won’t make it true and I would deservedly feel like a douche were I to do that.

Bottom line is, I’m not going to identify as an ‘operator’ because that’s not reality. I know identifying as stuff you’re not is popular now a days, but at some point, reality will reassert itself. When that happens, I won’t have anything to retract.

“As for Kistner’s claims in 2020, the Reformer cites the multiple times the candidate referred to himself as “the most decorated military member” in the race, said he’d put enemies “six feet under,” said he’s “been on the wrong end of a loaded weapon,” and in a virtual town hall, he made reference to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, saying, “I’ve been in such conflicts.””

MarineDad61

Phony pony “combat” claim, during the 2020 GOP primary.

“I’ve been in fights. I’ve been in combat.”
—- Tyler Kistner, 2/18/20

Link should cue you to 16:24 of this long video.

No gray area here.
He said “combat”.

How many times has Kistner lied,
and rode the phony combat phony
when NOT being taped?

[2/18/20 Tyler Kistner Congressional Republican Candidate Forum]

MarineDad61

Once I decided to dig,
I found this in less than 10 minutes of deploying the F U of Google.
Raw Story (also) linked to it yesterday.

https://www.rawstory.com/gop-candidate-tyler-kistner-has-repeatedly-suggested-he-saw-combat-but-he-didnt/

5JC

You could have saved that ten minutes, that is what I posted above.

“Regarding Kistner’s comment that he’s been in “fights” and “combat,” Grant said Kistner received an award citation for leading three combat missions in North Africa, where he was responsible for command and control of U.S. and allied nation forces.”

It’s a stretch to be sure, but not an impossible stretch. I have seen people get Combat Action Badges for artillery landing miles away from where they were and absolutely no one getting a scratch. They call themselves combat veterans and I call it bullshit.

“Combat” is a shifting target, nowadays.

I know a guy who, as a specialist, was a gunner in an M1114. A sniper missed (horribly) and put a hole in his red-green antenna about 3’ over his head. He was awarded a CAB, despite not even knowing he’d been shot at until he returned to base and the comms guy saw the bullet hole.

Another dude, physically concussed and pushed back against the rim of his cupola by the overpressure of an EFP. His buddy, gunning in the first truck, was hit. Only one conscious as the vehicle skidded to a stop with three amputations among two crew… reacted well and saved their lives. A CPT panicked and ended up leaving that wounded gunner on the battlefield during a CASEVAC. Rather than expose a fellow officer for cowardice on the battlefield, the entire incident was washed aside. No dead, no gunfire, no issue, no recognition. What should have been a bronze w/ V became a non-valor ARCOM for some bullshit like keeping his M2 clean.

Skivvy Stacker

I still ain’t votin’ for Angie Craig.

Hack Stone

With a smile like that, he should be selling used cars on Lejeune Blvd to SOI students.

Daisy Cutter

E-1 and above financed.

Bad credit, no problem.

E-4 Mafia For Life

There’s been a misunderstanding.
He saw [the 1962-1967 TV series, starring Vic Morrow] “Combat” while in Iraqistan.
It’s just a proof-reading error.
All this because quotes, italics and Times New Roman font weren’t used.
