Speakin’ of the weather, the temps where I live went from 80-some to the fifties like they saw a speed trap on the highway!
Having spent nearly a year trucking to Alaska in 1977, I was fortunate to have seen the Aurora Borealis at its best. I also saw it once, a few years later, while living in Miami, when a disgruntled dude kicked me in the “nads” for dancing to close to his woman. That was one vivid scene for me. And painful.
One must actually be North, usually, to see the Northern Lights. Like Keflavik North. Pretty incredible even if it can ruin your night vision.
I delivered papers back in the 1980s, I lived in Minnesota. Seeing the Aurora Borealis was a feature of the Minnesotan winters for me. It’s like being a microbe under a glowing curtain that is “alive” and “waving”. Sometimes, it was like parallel curtains, other times the whole sky was lighted.
There were times where I’d hear a slight “buzz” in my ears when the lights “rippled” while at the same time feeling vibrations within me. It made up for the sight of chimney exhausts extending blocks from the source.

The Soldier is a US Army CPT serving with an Alabama National Guard Unit.
According to the story, he only got to stay in touch with his Family in Alabama by Facetime when he was “Deployed” for 13 months.
The video stated he was “deployed” to Northport, Alabama, NOT Texas. Maybe I misheard the reporter..maybe she said North Fort, Alabama..I never heard of a North Fort, Alabama.
Northport, Alabama is near Tuscaloosa, Alabama (rtr)..the distance between Northport, Al and Meridanville, Al is about a 2 Hour Drive.
I don’t understand how Alabama became Texas.
Most of all, I don’t understand the TV Station/Reporters use of the word “Deployed”.
I thought “Deployed” meant physically going OUTSIDE the Continental United States..???
And 13 months? I thought all Troops received 30 days of leave per year?
This Army Soldier, whether he was “Deployed” to Texas or Alabama, chose not to drive/fly/take leave to see his Family, especially his Daughter?
Something does not smell right with this story.

FWIW, we had Nastys back fill our position at Schofield Barracks HI for Force Pro/DRF… they referred to it as a ‘deployment’.
Best part was it was split for them, one unit doing 6 months and the other doing 8. They got heated when they got kicked out of our barracks and moved into a dilapidated Quad.

My trip down to Biloxi for Katrina relief was considered a deployment. I was there for two weeks. The only thing that made it a “deployment” was that I was forced to spend two days out-processing my unit and one in-processing on my return. It was asinine to have to get a one-on-one medical and chaplain brief for what was really just a TDY.
Well, it’s Guard– they’re “deployed” if their mobilization assignment is outside the state.
Reservists have to go outside CONUS. (“What, it’s Texas?!” they’ll say. “He couldn’t get a pass home on the weekend?!”)

He stopped and said ‘Ya know, God should just wipe the slate clean, wipe-out mankind and just start over’. A bit perplexed, I asked ‘And your reasoning for this, is’? My teamie counted with ‘Give me two good reasons why God shouldn’t wipe out the world’. ‘That’s easy and I’ll actually give you three reasons – Dark chocolate, Milk chocolate and White chocolate. Here, have some of my Toblerone and be happy you’re an Earthling’. Evidently, our CSM had been watching this exchange. As we turned towards him, our Sergeant Major shook his head, chuckled and walked off. Yup. 100% with ya.

While were on the subject of War and Remembering, let’s take a moment to remember the Sailors lost when USS Reuben James became the FIRST Warship lost in WWII when She was torpedoed by a German U Boat on 31 October 1941. USS Reuben James was one of the escort ships that led USS Olympia on Her journey to bring back the Unknown Soldier from France in October of 1921.

Way back in the ‘fore times… The year was 1993 and I had some ducats burning a hole in the pocket. Familiar with the Woodstock movie and some radio hits, I came across a Santana III CD.
This was a great decision for a early-teen. (This may have been the same trip I bought Disraeli Gears.)

One of THE things I always greatly admired about Jimi Hendrix – OK, fair to mention that Jimi did not have a very lengthily or venerable Military career but like Elvis said about his heritage – who, coincidentally also served in the US Army – there’s some Injun back there, somewhere – both have Cherokee heritage(ᎠᏂᏴᏫᏯᎢ Nation), I believe..
Oh yeah, and also fair to make mention that both artists left the Army with honorable discharges
And it’s also fair to mention that Jimi’s General/Unsuitability Discharge was for spanking his monkey while on barracks clean-up detail./smile
