West Point’s Honor Code ain’t what it used to be

| April 19, 2021

The Long Grey Line has for several decades had an honor code that reads simply, “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” Remember, all of these cadets are being groomed to lead men and women in combat. They’re being educated at taxpayer expense. Almost all of them had to secure Congressional sponsorship to attend. The process is very competitive, and rightfully so. What do you suppose happens to the creme de la creme of American collegiates when caught cheating?

NY Post reports;

West Point expels eight cadets, holds back 53 others for cheating

West Point Military Academy has expelled eight cadets and held back 53 others for a year over its biggest cheating scandal in more than 40 years.

The centuries-old New York training academy announced the punishments Friday after a full investigation into 72 freshmen and one sophomore accused of cheating on an online freshman calculus exam in May.

It also announced it was scrapping its “willful admission process” that allowed 55 of the cheaters to escape expulsion by confessing.

“West Point must be the gold standard for developing Army officers. We demand nothing less than impeccable character from our graduates,” said Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, the superintendent of the academy overlooking the Hudson River.

I agree, General. So how is cheating “impeccable character”?

Of the 73 cadets investigated, only four cadets were acquitted by a board of their peers, and two cases were dropped due to insufficient evidence, the academy announced in a release Friday.

Six others resigned during the investigation into the scandal, the worst since 1976 when 153 cadets were accused of cheating in an exam.

The majority — 51 — were held back a year, while two others were turned back for six months, the academy said. All 53 are on “suspended separation”, meaning they will be expelled if they violate probationary terms before they graduate.

So they got recycled a few months? They’re still getting a full ride top notch education for free from the taxpayers! Not only that, but they even get paid.

Of the eight expelled, three accepted the chance to take part in an “academy mentorship program” that allows them to reapply to the academy after serving for up to a year as an enlisted soldier. There is no guarantee of readmission, the academy stressed.

Hold up. There’s a chance the expelled could get back into the highly selective academy that thousands work hard to get in to and not all can attend? “Expelled” used to mean something. A lot like “honor” used to mean something.

All of those found guilty got an “F” for the course and lost rank and privileges, including the chance to represent the academy. West Point said that 52 of the cadets were athletes no longer on teams.

“Character development is the most important thing we do at West Point. It is critical to building leaders for our Army,” said Williams, the superintendent.

“The tenets of honorable living remain immutable, and the outcomes of our leader development system remain the same, to graduate Army officers that live honorably, lead honorably, and demonstrate excellence,” he said.

Actions speak louder than words, General.

It’s because they have too much invested in them now to give up on them. It’s like putting a newly manufactured defective cracked engine block in a brand new pick up truck because making another new one is so expensive.

“online freshman calculus exam”

freshman= year one. Not a significant investment.

Sure am glad I don’t have to try and explain that to a grandson: “I know you’ve lived on the straight and narrow, busted your butt and dedicated your life to getting in, but there’s 50+ fewer slots this year because of all the cheaters who were allowed to recycle. Too bad, but hey, at least they get another chance.”

We can’t expect them to expel the football recruits and start loosing to Air Force and Navy again. Intercollegiate privilege strikes again.

Just what the “woke” Army needs more ring knockers with little or no integrity. Nothing says success like a butter bar you can’t trust.

David

I remember at my OCS board being counseled that the most important leadership was “integrity”… troops will try to follow harsh, even suicidal orders, but if they don’t trust the leader giving them, they won’t.

David

“Leadership trait”. Sorry.

SFC D

They should all be assigned to Civil Affairs. I understand they set the bar low.

We are becoming more and more like the corrupt folks we fight.

One more reason to avoid prolonged wars. Decide what is “win” , win fast, and get out.

I’ll bet they were watching a re run of Animal House. Came out in 1978 so they were not even born yet.

While I can’t say this is unbelievable, I will say it sickens and saddens me.

Did the Commander-In-Chief have undue Command influence on these decisions? IS the Commandant looking for a promotion?
What would happen if the Academy lived up to its standards and expelled all the Cadets that were found guilty? What if West Point, actually dismantled its football team because of lack of qualified recruits for a year or so? Gave the non-cheaters a chance to go play at other schools? Wonder how many would leave and accept the transfer? Army was playing West Virginia because their previous opponent had to pull out due to COVID, they could have pulled out as well and no one would have been wiser.

Yeah, integrity at West Point is sounding more and more like transparency in the Executive Branch these days (not quite what we were promised)!

…1976 when 153 cadets were accused of cheating in an exam….

I knew one of the expelled Class of 77 West Pointers. He didn’t cheat, but he knew someone who did and didn’t tell. He “tolerated those who do.” He was a yell-leader and bit the head off a chicken during a football rally …

I knew him in OSUT in 1979 while we were “drill corporals” waiting for our OCS class to open in 1980 (he was scheduled for the OCS class before me). He had passed Ranger School while at the Point — and since you cannot wear any awards in OSC until Senior status, he went out to Victory Drive and had a Ranger Tab tattooed on his left shoulder.

He was a very good officer … we bumped into each other sometime in 93 when we were both captains. Found out later that he retired as a major. Really good officer who was able to make some lemonade from those lemons.

Each and every one of the cadets involved should be expelled and forced to reimburse the American tax payer for the education they received. These asshats have now called into question the integrity of every West Point graduate, especially the superintendent. West Point alumni should be storming the gates over this.

no one cares

none of the comments here appear to be from officers. none were recruiters. none on active duty. clearly none have a clue of the teach train and develop concept. i highly encourage any of you to dip a toe into today’s army instead of sitting behind a computer and talk about how awesome it was 50 years ago. none will do it and much shit talking will commence….. love monday morning quartebacks. before i retired as a field grade and an OCS grad i had the pleasure of standing in front of the man for missing PT twice in one week. the leaders with a ton of mistakes usually are the ones that get it done.

I reckon you did not read my post.

No need to read–ossifers (field grade) know all they need to know.

You know what they say; “if you lie down with pigs….”

Which, apropos of nothing, reminds me of a poem my dear old mother taught me—

” How well do I remember, it was just this past December,
I was walking down the street in manly pride
When my heart began to flutter, and I fell into the gutter,
and a pig came up and lay down by my side
As I lay there in the gutter, with my heart still in a flutter,
a lady passing by began to say
‘You can tell a man who boozes, by the company he chooses’
And the pig got up, and slowly walked away”

LOL
Because, of course, the opinions of ignorant enlisted swine aren’t worth anything. Now *that’s* the “awesome” Army I remember from 50 years ago.
