Bill Maher admits to getting it wrong about President Trump’s tariffs

| July 29, 2025

Earlier in the year, Bill Maher, along with other Democrats and liberals, predicted that President Donald Trump’s tariffs would tank the American economy. However, while on a progressive YouTube podcast, Maher admitted that he got it wrong. Instead of the economy tanking, Maher admitted that the economy was doing good and that people were not acting like the economy had tanked at all. Maher was willing to own up to making a wrong prediction.

From Fox News:

Liberal comedian Bill Maher admitted that he was wrong about President Donald Trump on tariffs in a podcast posted Monday, and he’s “got to own it” because the economy is thriving.

Maher made the admission on his “Club Random” podcast as he explained that he’s always truthful with his audience during a conversation with progressive YouTube host Brian Tyler Cohen.

“Just to take an example, tariffs. Now I remember that I, along with probably most people, was saying at the beginning, ‘Oh, you know, by the 4th of July… the economy was going to be tanked by then,’ and I was kind of like, ‘Well, that seems right to me,'” Maher said.

“But, that didn’t happen,” Maher said. “It could happen tomorrow. I’m just saying, that’s reality, so let’s work first from the reality of that, not from ‘I just hate Donald Trump,’ because that’s boring and doesn’t get us anywhere and leads you to dishonesty.”

Maher added, “The truth is, I don’t know what his strategy is but, look, the stock market is at record highs… I also drive around. I don’t see a country in a depression at all. I see people just out there living their lives.

“I would have thought, and I’ve got to own it, that these tariffs were going to f—–g sink this economy by this time, and they didn’t. How do we deal with that fact? Because that’s the fact.”

It’s one of the things I grudgingly admire about Maher; he admits it when he gets it wrong.

Same here. Not all the time, but more than most. We even agree on a few issues. He also isn’t afraid of conservatives and refuses to deplatform them.

In this interview with Colion Noir, he admits that as a liberal gun owner he really doesn’t know much about guns but at the same time allows him to explain the conservative side.

He’s getting better at recognizing reality for what it is, not what the progs spin it to be. They’re probably gonna kick him out of the liberal club soon.

Is the red pill beginning to work?

SFC D

I think it’s kind of a timed-release pill.

Odie

So, it’s starting to work.

IIRC, Maher described himself not as a liberal but a libertarian. Far more neutral than a liberal, especially compared to today’s “liberals”.

Hmmm. I don’t see anywhere he said he was wrong. Just the economy could tank tomorrow. Sounds like he’s still hoping it does but regular people are just living their lives. Don’t they know Trump is a threat to our democracy? Regular people continue to befuddle and stymie the Democrats.

Maher and Fetterman. While I’ll likely not 100% agree with them nor say they are on my side politically, I can respect them because they are able to say this:

“Well, this isn’t working.”

Amateur Historian

Or:

“What we’re doing is stupid and ought to be abandoned immediately.”

Odie

When fetterman was first elected, I wondered who was this idiot showing up is sweat pants and shirt. Dems said no problem, leave him alone.

Now, fetterman is starting to sound more conservative on occasion, and dems are ready to burn him at the stake.

He still dresses like he went to goodwill for their half off sale tho.

Hack Stone

He dresses like a former executive from the Reston Virginia branch of All Points Logistics.

Green Thumb

The one buying all of the military clothing from Goodwill?

To be honest, Bill was just parroting the propaganda pushed by Leftists. He’s no Milton Friedman or Thomas Sowell…or has an idea who they might be. I’m not telling I knew the tariff strategy would work, but DJT is almost batting 1.000 with his polices. I felt confident he and his advisors knew what they were doing.
Yes. I do give props to Maher for admitting he was wrong. He knows for his show to be successful his on-air opinions need to be more centrist than partisan. The guy is not an idiot like Kimmel, Meyers, and Colbert which is why his show will survive… for now.

To be fair, we won’t know the final effect of these tariff policies for a few years after they have been in effect. If they stimulate manufacturing here and generate trillions in revenue, they could revolutionize our entire economy.

He’s been a smarmy douchebag. He’s a smarmy douchebag now and has every reason to anticipate a bright future full of smarmy douchebaggery.

ANCRN

Bill Maher can jump in an active volcano. He’s just another loud mouth who gets paid to talk about stuff he knows nothing about.
