Progressive Issues Cost Dem Seats?
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is not happy
Former U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill on Thursday tried to explain why the party had lost some of its voters in the 2020 election, and therefore Congressional seats in the election.
McCaskill served as a U.S. senator from Missouri from 2007 to 2019. She ran for a third term in 2018, but lost by a narrow margin to Republican candidate Josh Hawley, who had previously served as the state’s attorney general.
The Senator blamed the divide “began around cultural issues.”
“Whether you are talking guns or issues surrounding the right to abortion in this country or things like gay marriage and the right for transsexuals and other people who we as a party have tried to ‘look after’ and make sure that they’re treated fairly,” she said. “As we circled those issues we left some voters behind and Republicans dove in with a vengeance and grabbed those voters.”
Other members of Congress said liberal catchphrases like “defund the police” hurt more moderate representatives in their reelection races. They complained that Republicans were able to tie them to “socialism” because of the party’s more left-wing members.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is having none of it.
AOC pushes back on blaming progressives for Democratic House losses
Democrats had their majority cut in the House
By Adam Shaw
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, pushed back against fellow Democrats blaming their losses in the House of Representatives on left-wing politicians and policies like the Green New Deal, saying that there was no “compelling evidence” for that line of attack.
“There are folks running around on TV blaming progressivism for Dem underperformance,” she tweeted.
She said that she looked at those candidates who are blaming progressives and found that “almost all had awful execution on digital. DURING A PANDEMIC.”
Democrats had hoped to expand their majority in the House, but instead they saw that majority cut and Republicans come closer to potentially taking the chamber.
Democratic members of Congress sounded the alarm during a caucus call on Thursday, arguing that progressive policy ideas like “defund the police” and the Green New Deal were detrimental to their performance in elections.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said if “we are going to run on Medicare for All, defund the police, socialized medicine, we’re not going to win,” his office confirmed.
But AOC, perhaps the most well-known and influential member of the left-wing flank of House Democrats, claimed that Democratic incumbents in swing states who sponsored items like the Green New Deal and Medicare-for-all won reelection.
“So the whole ‘progressivism is bad’ argument just doesn’t have any compelling evidence that I’ve seen.”
And there you have it. The lackluster performance of the Congressional Democrats cannot possibly be due to the hard left, socialist issues that were rammed down America’s throats this entire campaign cycle. AOC says so.
No. The progressive candidates won by large margins.
What cost seats was misinformation.
An echo chamber.
One that is damn near impenetrable.
Why you so angry, Comrade Commissar? You’re Yugo broken down again?
When Hack Stone was on Recruiting Duty, the dickwad SNCO of the Recruiting Substation had a Yugo. Stupidest motherfucker Hack ever ran across in the Corps, and he had a lot of competition.
I knew a guy who had one too. A guy I worked with in a window factory just out. What a piece of shit car.
He was not a major genius either. Fucker was a menace on a tow motor that’s for sure.
Nothing like the sound of a big flat of glass crashing to the floor from height.
Like The Almighty dumping his silverware drawer on your head.
Last time I saw one (’97- ’00, over in Germany) it was a Red model (only came in three colors) and it had The Club on it. Laughed my ass off.
Could be worse. I know a guy who lovingly restored, and then shipped to the US, a Trabant.
Most of the progressives come from districts where if you are in the correct party, you get elected. AOC is an excellent example; whatever Democrat wins the primary WILL win the election. Almost none of the ultraleftists could win a contested election.
The ur-example of Dunning Kruger combined with delusions of adequacy.
The
Socialist“Progressive” candidates you’re speaking of won because they ran in left-leaning and safe (for them) districts, dingledorf.McCaskill was talking about statewide races and more balanced districts. You know, the races either party needs to win in order to control Congress and state legislatures.
Sheesh. I considered asking here if you’re really so thick that you couldn’t figure the above out for yourself. But I don’t need to ask; the question would be rhetorical. Your comments the other day on the Tom Brady article have already proven that yes: you really are that thick.
He is not here to persuade or educate or discuss. Perhaps he feels better the more abuse he receives.
His Dom doesn’t work for free, so here he is for his needed abuse.
See, I was gonna come in and say the answer is they didn’t go far enough left.
The progressives that “won by large margins” are those like The Squad did so in what are essentially single-party districts. Talk about echo chambers.
Congratulations on driving a TAH member out. I’m sure you’re giddy with delight and celebrating. You’re a fraud.
Keep telling yourself that. Get “woke,” go broke.
Hey Lars, is the sky blue where you’re at? I only ask because you have demonstrated a difficulty with recognizing reality. You should probably talk to somebody about that.
The only sky Lars can see is brown, because his head is firmly implanted up another liberal’s ass.
Sure that’s not “firmly implanted up his own ass”, Sarge? ‘Cause from what I’ve seen of his comments here, my guess would be that he has a major (no pun intended) case of recti-cranial insertion.
Remember when I told you a few days prior to the election that you don’t speak for minorities? They are people who can think for themselves.
Meditate on that you fuskin racist POS.
I know, honest self reflection is beyond your capability.
PS, go fuck your face. Not that you have the stones to engage in actual intellectual discourse. That requires intellectual fortitude, of which you lack in spades.
You represent the very worst, basest parts of the human condition. Intellectual coward ace combined with moral bankruptcy.
I’ve read your bull for the past year or two! Why anyone responds, I have no clue. The only conclusion I can come to in regard to your posts that your nothing but a attention whore!
The only thing I’ve read that rings true is that your statement stating
That folks on another site regard you as a “Asshole” well at least your consistent, I think most folks here at TAH have reached the same conclusion!
Yep, most definitely, you are indeed, a “Asshole”
Too bad your bunghole isn’t impenetrable.
Major Moonbat, part of me has pity on you while the rest wants to tell you to go fuck yourself. We see that you’ve never held a steady job in the private sector, you had a lackluster Military Career which you’re still bitter as hell about, and you’ve become an indoctrinated babbling cultist from your time at UC Berzerkely. I and nearly everyone else here have worked our tails off to be productive, contribute to society and be beneficial to others as well, when have you ever worked for a steady income outside of Government entities? I am sure that many others here belong to organizations that contribute to the welfare of others, have you ever given anything to anyone else other than being a “Medic” to rioting fleabags?
“ReEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”
AOC
That’s too coherent a statement from Ojos Locos. Let’s be honest.
I’m trying to figure out what she meant in this quote: “almost all had awful execution on digital. DURING A PANDEMIC.”
It seems as though every time AOC does something to get attention, she somehow makes a mess out of communicating coherently, which does not say positive things about her level of education.
It’s not about making mistakes. People do that all the time. It’s about a consistent history of making gaffes and peculiarly thoughtless public posts that might serve better if she just didn’t do that.
I’ll just leave this here….
(zzziiiiippppp….possibly and maybe her *only* redeeming quality and I’m stretching it…so to speak)
Can’t be dissing Lars’ girl… she has the smarts and loves herself some rock hard socialism!
AOC, a poster child for that dreaded “white privilege” graduated from a great university with honors and poured drinks until she was almost 30 years old.
She was a lazy, stupid piece of shit and keeps proving how truly unintelligent she is.
Way to go, AOC. And thanks again for fucking over NYC with Amazon. Burn in hell.
I always thought it said alot that she graduated, supposedly with honors, from a prestigious university and was working as a bartender.
I’m not convinced that the more ‘progressive’ members of the Democratic Party result in a net loss of votes. Yes, a more left position will alienate more center people… but similarly, a more center position alienates the left ones. That’s the Democrat’s issue – no matter what they do, some portion of the party is unhappy, and doesn’t turn up to vote. I’d have to see a compelling analysis suggesting that they consistently lose more going one way than the other.
What they do have a problem with is the far-left portion that stomp their feet and refuse to vote for someone that isn’t their particular brand of racial/gender/hair-style minority. Those people need to be grown-ups and recognize some compromise to move the needle towards their goals.
My hope, if Biden is indeed declared the winner, is that he’ll appoint some of the more reasonable Republicans into his cabinet. Get Kasich on board. I always liked Huntsman, too. People who can work across the aisle, since we’re clearly a very fractured country. In my opinion, it’s time to start drawing the line between reasonable people we can disagree with, and the extremes who drive a lot of the chaos on each side.
Progressive = autistic poop/juice box flingers
It’s a bell curve. Get out of your echo chamber.
I’m considered a liberal here – and yet, I come, and read, and engage often. You don’t see any irony in telling me to get out of my echo chamber?
And even if I agreed with you that political identity is just a simple bell curve, you seem to forget that two parties vie for votes — those curves overlap, so it’s not like you can just shift towards the center and automatically win a greater area under the curve (more votes). The other party has a say on that middle ground, too, whereas they don’t on the edges.
The Left side of your bell curve wrecks cities when they want to make a point. And support for that evil lunacy appears to start in your minus one sigma zone. Charitably.
That your side coddles and cultivates outright -active- city-wrecking insanity should be warning to you.
Face it. You own them. Now do something about it before their baleful gaze falls upon you.
I said I’m considered a liberal here – but, in fact, I’m a registered independent, and vote for whomever I think will do a better job on the things I care about. That includes Republicans. So this ‘your side’ stuff is pretty off-target once again.
And, first, I wasn’t arguing about policies of the left, I was just talking about the simple calculation of votes by the area under the curve. Doesn’t matter if that’s dyed-in-the-wool socialists on the far, far left, or blue-collar middle-of-the-road people who are ever so slightly Democratic.
Second, if you want to say the left has a problem with rioters and looters, no disagreement in principle, though we’ll probably disagree about the size of that contingent. But if the left gets those assholes, then I can say your side has the white supremacists, anti-government boogaloos, and other crazies. What are you doing about them? Or is it that maybe you don’t feel they’re your responsibility because you disavow their actions?
While not the topic on this thread, you have hit upon something that bothers me about the vote tabulations in this election. It may not rise to the level of being a red flag, but it could be.
There may indeed be an overlapping simple bell curve. If so, that makes it even more difficult for me to accept that huge numbers of people would cross over to vote for a presidential candidate then basically vote straight ticket down ballot. Sure, some of that would occur. All sorts of odd combinations occur every election for any number of reasons. That number is fairly low.
Can’t really quantify that. Yet. But, most of us have comfort levels concerning what appears to be “normal” and things which appear outside expectations of normal or usual. We apply that phenomena to everything from foods we consume to medical diagnoses, to just about everything else. Of course it impacts our view of elections.
All just to say that this one appears to me to have enough irregularities in voting patterns to warrant further investigation. It may just be 2020 continuing to be 2020. Or it may be an indicator of things done deliberately to skew the vote totals. Won’t know without a thorough investigation.
I’ve got zero problems with an analysis of the voting results – the mere fact that recounts occasionally change numbers shows our counts are not perfect, and I’m equally sure some level of fraud exists. In fact, the Wisconsin GOP was encouraging it the other day, and some QAnon people just tried to bring fake ballots into the Philly election counts. But just like my reply on the WOT [1], often times things that look like fraud at first glance -like the Democratic area of Hidalgo County getting new votes that appear to be 80+% for Tump – can have reasonable explanations. This doesn’t mean fraud didn’t happen there, but it’s probably best, on both sides, to not assume fraud absent any (real) evidence. And as of yet, there’s no real evidence of fraud in any results. As for this: There may indeed be an overlapping simple bell curve. If so, that makes it even more difficult for me to accept that huge numbers of people would cross over to vote for a presidential candidate then basically vote straight ticket down ballot. First, I don’t think it’s a simple bell curve. But I’m not entirely sure what you mean by the second half – – you find it hard to accept someone who votes straight R might cross over and vote D on the top of the ticket? (Or vice-versa, of course). One thing that makes this hard to evaluate is generally fewer people vote for the down-ballot stuff, so you can’t always evaluate it as you like. But let’s look at my state, Colorado, for an example. Colorado had a big Senate battle, since it had a vulnerable Republican (Gardner). Here are the numbers: Biden – 1,753,416 Trump – 1,335,253 Hickenlooper – 1,682,463 Gardner – 1,399,030 So, Gardner had more votes than Trump, and Hickenlooper fewer than Biden. So what’s more likely? That Democrats committed fraud, across multiple counties they don’t even run, to help Biden in a state he was going to win by >10% anyway, but forgot to help their Senate candidate even though that was more… Read more »
Your CO example is exactly what I am talking about. Those numbers do not appear to me to be odd. Yes, there is a difference, but it is not huge.
In my own state, there were huge numbers last time out from Dems voting for Trump. Many of them became disillusioned and did not support him this time. However, other Dem voters this time supported him who did not last time. So the totals were very similar this year to 2016. (No, I have not seen official numbers about all that but among my personal friends and neighbors it is born out as so.)
All that said, when the numbers of votes for a presidential candidate are hundreds of thousands greater than down ballot vote totals, my alarm bells start to sound, depending. Not sure where that tipping point might be – there are a lot of variables.
Call my Pollyanna, but I consider our vote to be among our most precious commodities. Yours counts no more or less than mine, while the most influential among us also have only one vote. Our vote should be secured. Violators should be prosecuted.
Too many twist the motives of those who insist upon things like voter ID. I don’t want to interfere with any legitimate voter casting their vote. Not at all. I just want to preserve the value of each of our votes. And make sure that the value of your vote is properly tabulated, as is mine. I don’t think is too much to ask.
They lost down ballot cause they were so busy stuffing biden ballots they forgot about the local stuff. Got to give credit to the Georgia Democrat thieves. They had enough sense to have their extra ballots with a straight demonrat vote all the way down. Make sure that creepy joe had the votes he needed and thru the Senate races into question. Odd how the big change started coming with all of the found ballots from Fulton, Gwinnett, and Clayton Counties. Check your demographics and who cough Stacy A cough, is the Plantation Boss up there. I’m sure that President Kameltoe Harris is hand picking a Cabinet Post for that wart hawg.
Nothing about this election and the thieving that went one by the dims surprises me one bit. It’s what they do, it’s how they win elections. Been like that since Reconstruction when all the Blacks were voting for the “Party of Lincoln.” Now it’s all about being a yellow dog democrat.
They also really only truly care about defeating Trump. The Democrats know that they can get the Republicans to buckle, even if just a little bit (one step at a time), on issues.
This election was all about defeating the orange man. Any gains in the House or Senate were just a bonus.
