LA City Council approves plan to add unarmed crisis response team to police for nonviolent 911 calls

| October 15, 2020

I don’t know any cops that are against responding to fewer bullshit calls, but this plan will be found after a few years to be a waste of money/resources. Once they realize they can instead use the money to get more cops who can do more than just sit around and wait for a nonviolent call but go out and proactively fight crime.

There’s a reason everything gets dumped on the police department, it’s cheap. Street cops are like the government’s Swiss Army Knives.

he Los Angeles City Council approved a plan Wednesday to add an unarmed crisis response team to the police department, according to local reports.

The council, which voted 14-0, will seek proposals from nonprofit organizations with ideas for pilot programs, Fox LA reported.

The city also will “seek recommendations from relevant departments” on how to add new city employees who will respond to nonviolent calls that currently go to police, according to a press release. The new workers would provide mental health, substance abuse and welfare check services.

The whole plan is predicated, as most far-left progressive ideas, on the notion that it is a “first step” to “replace the LAPD.” To push their radical agenda, they use lies. I can’t tell if this councillor is stupid, ignorant, or willfully lying;

“If George Floyd had been met with unarmed, trained specialists for the nonviolent crime he was accused of, he would be turning 47 years old today,” City Councilman Herb Wesson Jr. told Fox LA. “This plan will save lives, and I’m so proud of my colleagues on the Council for voting to move this forward.”

Even under this new plan, criminal acts would be the purview of actual cops. It’s absurd to think that cops aren’t trained to deal with nonviolent crime. It’s at least 90% of what cops do. Only TV and movie cops are dealing with violent crime all day.

I can see the non armed response team knocking on someone’s door then get shot up when the door is opened. Open the door Richard, Hmmmm sounds like a song.

Berliner

If I were with the LA cops, I would watch the non-armed response team at a distance from the safety of the car to see how things turn out.

Hack Stone

They better be filming those encounters, World Star Hip Hop needs the content. They can dub in the Benny Hill Theme (Yakety Sax) later, but the laughs will be recorded live.

So…Herby thinks unarmed social workers would have saved Shitty Boy Floyd from his massive fentanyl/meth overdose?
🤦‍♂️

The Other Whitey

The “social workers” (what a ridiculous and nonsensical title) would be accused of racism after Floyd ran around screaming that he couldn’t breathe, collapsed, and couldn’t be resuscitated with their crappy low-proficiency CPR they learned from that 30-minute class at the community center.

MI Ranger

I suspect he would have been doing a little more boxing practice on their faces if they had sent unarmed “Social Workers” to arrest “non-violent” criminal George Floyd. Especially since he had a history of violent crimes, to include pistol whipping a pregnant woman, and threatening her while his buddies robbed her!
Yeah, I would happily sit in the car and watch from a distance as this new Team of “unarmed crisis response” folks execute their duties. So is a “domestic dispute” considered non-violent? I seem to recall that’s where most Police get shot!

rgr769

Yes, like St. Floyd would have complied with the orders of unarmed officers when they arrested him for passing a counterfeit $20. Yeah, he would have meekly got into the patrol car for unarmed fellows without any objection.

The Dead Man

He was the one that pointed a gun at a pregnant woman and threatened her at one point right? So priors with a deadly weapon?

Cameron

Same with Jacob Blake. I believe Rayshard Brooks had had similar charges for that in the past. Never mind the fact that he body slammed the two police officers and stole a taser from one of them as they were trying to cuff him ALL THANKS to him being drunk.

rgr769

He not only pointed it at her, he stuck the muzzle on her advanced pregnant belly and threatened to pull the trigger if she didn’t tell them where the drugs and money were hidden. It was a home invasion with several other pavement predators. That crime is what sent him to the state prison for multiple years. Too bad they didn’t lock him up for over 20 years, then he might still be alive.

SFC D

How many police officers have been killed or assaulted responding to a “non-violent” call? I’m willing to bet the number is higher than those killed or assaulted on a “violent” call.

JacktheJarhead

Who wants to make a bet on how many of the “Non-Violent Response Teams” get killed before they don’t get anymore volunteers? Or they start arming them?

This should be Interesting.

Yeppers, just what we all been discussing. I ran into this perusing a FGS. It tied into the FGS from today with the nut job down in Floruh-duh. DaHell these unarmed/untrained SJWs gonna do when a weapon comes out and they are standing there with a 12 step program on a clipboard?

spapos showing up to rub himself over the coming true wet dream of the Good Idea Fairy in 5.4.3.2..

I take even money on three!

Dial 911 expect an armed Leo to show up.
Have a history of 911 calls expect multiple armed Leos to show up.
I’m good with that.

He would be turning 47 years old today in jail.

There isn’t a cop in existence who would be upset with not having to take mental health calls. Any locality that is dumb enough to have social workers show up as initial responders for any 911 call better go ahead and budget for the inevitable law suit after things go sideways.

How about properly funding and staffing the local community services boards? CSB is the primary conduit for law enforcement to get mental health care to those who need it.

Or take a page from the Lexington, KY PD. They hired social workers on staff. Their sole mission in life is to follow up on contacts where needed. I’ve heard good things about this model.

Personally I would lean toward properly funding/staffing the CSB so the PD/SO is removed from the picture completely after the initial contact. But either would work.

Instead, LA is probably going to send unarmed, unequipped and untrained people into unpredictable situations where violence is a very real possibility and then just cross their fingers. Part of the reason these issues get dumped on cops is they can physically and legally force people to comply immediately. Social workers don’t have that authority or capability.

Viking6

Well the last Mental Health call I responded t ended with myself between the suspect and the social worker stopping the suspect from stabbing him with a butcher knife. In 11 years on the street I can only say that nothing wrong with social workers after the suspect has been subdued as it just doesn’t work well until then

Penguinman000

Completely agree. I also think any agency that has a community oversight board should have requirements for members to do ride alongs for a month in addition to participation in use of force scenarios and in-service training.

But that’s just a pipe dream. Wouldn’t want people educated and trained being on oversight. And you damn sure wouldn’t want them seeing what cops actually deal with everyday. That would destroy the political narrative.

rgr769

Anyone wanting to work as an unarmed enforcement officer will have to have a death wish. That PA officer who was just cleared of wrongdoing was responding to one of these “non-violent” mentally ill family member calls. The nutcase he killed almost got to him with that psycho attack with a large hunting knife.

But hey, this looks like a perfect job for proggy SJW’s, if we can get them out of Mom’s basement.

Hack Stone

That two year degree from a community college is all the training these crisis response teams need to peacefully defuse a situation. If the subject of the call starts to get violent, the unarmed, trained specialist can break out the herbal tea, essential oils and Yanni music to convince the person to calm down. It will work wonders with the crackheads who overdose every week.

Green Thumb

Unarmed response teams?

LA should contact “Turd” Bolling at Ambassador Worldwide Protection Agency (both national and international).

Being that many are felons, they cannot carry firearms.

Hack Stone

Hack Stone thought you were referring to Thomas Turd Bolling misplacing his firearm. Didn’t someone post that about him?

Paramedics and ambulance crews around here won’t go in to a scene with an unpredictable menatal subject without police escort. Kind of doubt a social worker will do it. I imagine after the first few social workers get killed on non-violent calls this thing will go back to the good idea fairy.

Poetrooper

Call them SWAP teams, for Social Workers’ Accelerated Pay, because you can bet grandpa’s farm that this move is going to be quickly followed by loud insistent demands for higher pay for for these social workers “forced” to face more hazardous working conditions.

Count on it–especially in Kalipornia…

“Unarmed Crisis Response Teams”?

“Well, Johnny, instead of throwing that brick through Mr. Rubenstien’s window, why don’t you come of her here and take 10 deep, cleansing breaths? And then, we can hold hands and sing ‘Kumbaya” together, OK?”

This is the city, Los Angeles, California. It’s a fine place to enjoy life. There are places reserved just for kids, when they’re young and feel young. Places they go when they’re young and feel old, beginning the big search for something that often doesn’t exist in the places they look for it. They might find it here, or here, or maybe here. They could try looking here. Their search might end with a college degree. One thing’s sure: whatever they’re looking for cannot be found in voting for Joe Biden. When they try, that’s where I come in; my name is Friday, and I carry a dream catcher.

I was working the day shift out Rampart, assigned to unarmed crisis response team. The smoke was clearing from the previous evening’s mostly peaceful riot, and a majority of the demonstrators returned to their mother’s basements for their daily ration of conflict free corn flakes and herbal tea. The call came in, a subject smoking bath salts was eating the faces of pedestrians on Sunset Boulevard.

I grabbed my partner, Dr. Phil, and we stopped by the police armory to be issued a warm puppy in case we needed to defuse the situation. Due to the mandate of Governor Newsome, all government vehicles are required to be electric, and as a result of the California wildfires destroying the power grid, all of our vehicle were inoperable. We walked to the scene of the incident.

We arrived on scene two hours later, and our suspect was still there. We immediately established rapport with the suspect, Benji “Blue Boy” Carver by offering him a hug and asking if there was anything he would like to talk about. He then snapped the neck of the puppy and started chewing on it, responding “I don’t feel like talking.” We told him that we understand, and provided him my cell phone number in case he ever wanted to talk, or just hang out.

I went back to Headquarters and filed my report.

The only thing missing is the theme music from “Dragnet,” and Jack Webb’s deadpan voice.

The premise is that society/cops make people violent/criminal. Change society, remove cops, and you change people and perfect them.

They truly believe it. Despite overwhelming evidence to to the contrary, they Believe.

Thus Marx continues to destroy, as the humans stubbornly stay human.

“Me want. Me do. Me feel good.” Hard wired in human existence. Not removed by wishful thinking. Not removed by action, either. One can persuade some folks by reason. Some by emotion. Others by running up the costs. Some few, cannot be persuaded or deterred, by anything or anyone.

Ignored at peril.

Yeah, call in some unarmed Social Workers to deal with a DM situation or say, a 6’4″ 230 pound Male running around naked and screaming while stoned out of his gourd on God-only-knows-what!
