Air Force Combat Controller to receive Silver Star and Bronze Star w/ “V”

| August 14, 2020

MSgt John Grimesey

MSgt John Grimesey, an Air Force Combat Controller, will receive the Silver Star and a Bronze Star Medal for valor for past deployments with US Army Green Beret units to Afghanistan.

Combat Controllers serve with special operations units, usually behind enemy lines, and coordinate close air support (CAS).

Grimesey was a Senior Airman in 2013 when he and his Special Forces teammates were hit by a rocket propelled grenade. Concussed and hit with shrapnel he dragged a wounded comrade 25 feet to cover, personally engaged the Taliban, and starting calling in airstrikes from CAS fighters and AC-130 gunships.

He’ll also be receiving a Bronze Star for valor for a 2017 Afghanistan firefight.

Grimesey has previously been honored multiple times for his combat heroism. He’s received two Bronze Stars with “V” device and an Air Force Commendation Medal with “V” device, as well as a Purple Heart.

Unfortunately for us, and to the relief of Taliban fighters throughout A-stan, MSgt Grimesey is in the process of medically retiring from the service.

BZ to this Warrior. Obvious that this one spent more time on the rifle range v the golf driving range.

Seems like he caused a significantly large amount of Taliban to take an “early medical retirement” too.

Thanks, MSgt Grimesey. You do us all proud.

So he’s getting the Silver Star and Bronze Star w/V but he’s ALREADY gotten two previous Bronze Stars w/V AND an AF Comm with V.

Ummm…..das a lotta Vs….

A well deserved upgrade to the Silver Star for this brave Warrior.

Thank you for sharing, Mason.
