IVAW’s Chiroux responds

| March 21, 2009

In reference to the post I wrote from someone who knows Chiroux, another anonymous commenter sent me this from Chiroux who was writing in response to another series of posts that were broadcast around the internet from a fellow IVAW member (actually the one that TSO quoted here). Whoever sent it to me, thought that this would absolve Chiroux of charges of wrong doing. Heh, they don’t know me too well, do they? So here’s Chiroux’ email to IVAW;

My response as well as that of our entire organization should be complete condemnation for whichever member wrote and shared this piece of libel.

First off, I HAVE NEVER defrauded any of my supporters in any way shape or form. Every dime that has been donated to IVAW for my defense remains with IVAW and will be spent on my hearing as is required by law. As far as donations made to me personally or through my paypal (which have yet to exceed $1,000), the portion I have spent has been on professional expenses only as IVAW has not provided me any compensation for phone, travel or materials since early last fall, which does in fact exceed the amount donated to me by my individual supporters.

As far as my work ethic, few have put in as many thankless hours as me on some EXTREMELY difficult campaigns for as many headaches and as little compensation. Despite having maintained full-time enrolment in college, I manage to speak almost daily on some panel or to some group about my experience and the importance of supporting G.I. resistence. It’s worth noting that through the course of what has been at least 100 speaking engagements, I’ve received humble honorariums only twice, which is far less than most IVAW members I know who travel and speak or have spoken regularly like I do.

Now as far as me wanting to be seen as a “war hero,” I think most who really know me will find this absurd. There is no such thing as a “war hero” especially in the context of the global war on terror. I believe it to be genocide, as most other U.S.-led wars and thus take nothing but BEAMING PRIDE for having had the good sense to say HELL NO on the first time around. My reasons for not deploying are based in this sentiment alone. In no way was “fear of facing” my “duties” a motivating factor in my refusal to deploy or in my decision to dedicate myself to the cause of peace and social justice. Duties and war crimes have nothing to do with eachother, unless in such a sentence as, “Their duties to resist war crimes have been hidden by lies and indoctrination.”

And I did not join the Army because I was a fuck up. I joined the Army because society and my family are fucked up and both played a very ACTIVE role in ensuring military service was more or less in the cards for me. I didn’t join to “serve my country,” I joined to save my ass, which I acknowledge. However having been in the Army (I consider it no form of service) for five years, I can honestly say that neither would be a suitable motivation for joining the Army. I didn’t serve my country or save my ass, I supported war crimes from the rear and was stripped my humanity in the process as well. I apologize to my country and the world for not resisting the crimes of my government sooner.

As far as my intellectual capacity…I think I’m doing alright, but should anyone question that, you’re welcome to “ask me any surprise question about a particular subject,” at any time. If I know the answer or have an idea I’ll tell you. If I don’t, I’ll tell you to ask someone else. If you think that’s dumb, you’re dumb.

This whole repeating reference to pot IS dumb, dumb, dumb, and hurtful to the organization as a whole.

In short, whoever wrote the above post is CATEGORICALLY in the wrong. I suspect this person of perhaps having a personal bone to pick with me or perhaps is jealous of the level of positive impact my story and organizing has had despite a perceived lack of self-contamination in the form of illicit deployments.

Let me make this clear: I apologize for no part of my activism or for my lack of combat experience. I reaffirm that I believe the Global War on Terror to be a crime against humanity and I reaffirm my pride in having refused to participate the second time around. I again acknowledge my first time around lasted only five days, however this makes me no less a veteran and no less complicit in this mess.

I know we are going through some tough times, folks, but if shenanigans like the above post continue, we can count on total self-obliteration in the coming year. We need to remember who we are and what we are doing. I for one believe we do not exist to glorify military service in any form. Nor do I believe we exist to honor the combat experience.

I believe we exist to demand immediate withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan and reparations to both peoples for our crimes. I believe we exist to demand veterans who HAVE been made victims of occupation through deployment be cared for properly by this country. I believe we exist to challenge the American conscience to come to grips with the racist nature of our foreign policy. I believe we exist to support each other, above and beyond all else, in the process of personal reclamation.

Enough back-sliding and ass-biting folks! Enough people want to destroy us already. Let’s not help them along in this, OK?
Peace and Solidarity,

Matthis Chiroux

That was all pasted in exactly as he wrote it – the gross misspellings, piss-poor grammar and emphasis are all Chiroux – the great journalist and scholar.

Yeah, it seems to me that if you have to tell people you’re not ripping them off – they have good reason to suspect you’re ripping them off. And that part about his work ethic, he writes as if college studies are a big deal – while I was in college full time, I also had a full time job and was a work-study student in the campus VA office – all while I was fathering three teenagers – so I’m really not impressed that “I manage to speak almost daily on some panel or to some group”. Big whoop.

The part that gets me is the next paragraph – about him wanting to be a war hero. For one thing, Matthis, to be a war hero, you have to actually been in a war. Every time I see you, you’re spouting off about being an “Afghanistan veteran”. Six days on Baghram Air Base doesn’t make you an Afghanistan veteran. It makes you an accidental tourist. So to absolve himself of that, he says no one is a hero.

Now, those of you IVAW members who did serve in Afghanistan, how do you feel about a pussy like Chiroux who claims to be equal to you service-wise, telling you that what you did was as meaningless as what he accomplished in Afghanistan? That your sacrifice is worthless like his – he probably used more clean bedding in his six days than you did the whole year you were there. He probably took more showers in his six days than you did the whole tour. He probably had more hot chow than you had. But instead of raising himself up to your level, he brings you down to his. How does that feel?

Then he blames his parents for his miserable life; “And I did not join the Army because I was a fuck up. I joined the Army because society and my family are fucked up”. Nice. His father and his sister stood by him when he made the choice to avoid the IRR call up, and this is how he repays them. I hope they get to see this letter.

“However having been in the Army (I consider it no form of service) for five years, I can honestly say that neither would be a suitable motivation for joining the Army. I didn’t serve my country or save my ass, I supported war crimes from the rear and was stripped my humanity in the process as well”. More intellectual masturbation. He tries to bring everyone down in the mud with him – the easy choice. When he says he supported war crimes from the rear, he means waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay in the rear. He fought the Taliban from Japan and Germany.

He calls the pot smoking charges “dumb”, but he doesn’t call them inaccurate – probably because enough IVAW members have smoked pot with him to know he’d be lying and cast doubt on the whole statement.

“I for one believe we do not exist to glorify military service in any form. Nor do I believe we exist to honor the combat experience.” That’s easy to say for someone who has no military service or combat experience, isn’t it? Every sentence that comes out of Adam Kokesh’s mouth has Fallujah in it. I suspect that Kokesh would take exception to Chiroux’s statement. I’ve talked with some of the folks from IVAW and they’re proud of their service – the ones who actually served. Chiroux is telling them that their service is meaningless and cheap.

I know for a fact that many IVAW members think Chiroux is a blowhard and a pussy. He’s not much different than Jesse MacBeth except he lasted through basic training.

I wonder who’s paying for his college?

Well, Matthis. My fucking heart bleeds for you. I once knew someone in my life just like you. I was his offspring. Everything that went wrong in his life was forever someone esle’s fault. And my grandparents would have given him anything to help him become a productive member of society. Trouble is he didn’t want it and neither do you. You want it but without the effort. XXXXX. Wrong Answer! Here’s a thought: Get the hell over it, already. Admit you fucked up, hated the Army and all it actually stands for and that you were never worthy. Admit that your parents are not the reason you failed. As for this Country, who apparently has also failed you, XXXXXX. Wrong answer. Time to get out the mirror and say, “My name is Matthis Chiroux. I joined the Army and became a bigger fuck up than I was before I went and now I want to own it. I’m sorry that I think my parents and society didn’t have their shit together to serve me, but I finally get it. The responsibility for happiness and productiveness as a member of society falls squarely on me.” The Army’s job is not to save your ass, you clown. The Army is a place where you learn to set goals and become a member of a team. The Army is also a place where as an individual you are provided every opportunity in the world to excel. Just like the whole USA where opportunities abound. I guess you missed the boat on that one, didn’t you boy? You missed the part where hard work and dedication can bring satisfaction to yourself and the Country, even. You see, many of us got that from the get-go. Work hard,be dedicated and along the way learn that some things. Like Duty, honor, Country. Yeah, those silly words that make you barf every time you hear them. If our society is so fucked up and can’t help you, GET.OUT. NOW. Europe would love to have a pussy like you and you won’t have to strive for anything.… Read more »

[…] Heh, This Ain’t Hell keeps on top of the Matthis Chiroux issue! […]

As the resident CA Bubba, and an Afghanistan Veteran, first let me say that FIVE days in country does not an Afghanistan Veteran make. THe VFW considers you a Veteran of a foreign conflict after you have been in country for 30 days. Second, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck………. I am 24 years old, and am in my senior year year of college; I can’t believe this retard thinks he is doing a lot just going to class and “speaking” to ppl, I am active in the VFW, Legion, the USAR, College, have had two jobs, and am up for an internship and still mentor at my Church. I fully know the meaning of the phrase “Sleep is a crutch!” So I personally find this Blue Falcon a disgrace to the uniform, and am angry with his Drill Sergeant as my fellow NCO didn’t do his job and weed him out in Week One when he should have.

There is no such thing as a “war hero” especially in the context of the global war on terror.” WTF do yo know about war with a WEEK at Bagram and NOT having any bang-bang made at you??? “I believe it to be genocide, as most other U.S.-led wars and thus take nothing but BEAMING PRIDE for having had the good sense to say HELL NO on the first time around.” Hmmm, gee, I got machinegunned & rocketed by Taliban turds in the ville adjacent to Firebase Baylough. The ville is still standing & the civilian inhabitants are still very much alive. If we’re commiting genocide, our pace is earth worm slow POSEUR!

JuniorAG

“I manage to speak almost daily on some panel or to some group about my experience and the importance of supporting G.I. resistence.”

“G.I. resistance”, A snappy phrase that means destroying discipline, a great way to get Soldiers killed in war, but Chiroux wouldn’t know a damned thing about war since he had no caps busted at his sorry azz.

Caroline

His reply is almost as good as Ardent’s rebuttal “I hope everyone hates you” but, his “if you think that’s dumb, you’re dumb” is still pretty good. Does anyone know if he’s from the east coast?

Just A Grunt

Well I was only a part time student because I attended college while being a full time soldier. There is nothing like handing in a writing assignment written by the light of a red lens flashlight which has blood on it from a confrontation with concertina wire earlier in the day. Or coming in out of the field early on a Saturday and having the professor of your computer science class meet you early to let you in to the computer lab so that you write the program that needed to be turned in that others had been working on all week.
This punk is self absorbed and thrashing about blaming everybody from his family to the Army for his pathetic misguided views on the world. I bet he is a blast at family gatherings at Thanksgiving, although it sounds like his family really doesn’t have much to do with him anymore. So he has found the only family that will tolerate him, the IVAW.
If the Army wasn’t his cup of tea why didn’t he take the route so many others take and just get chaptered out. There was something that kept him in until those deployment orders arrived.
Anyway glad you guys track this sort of vermin which frees me up to pursue other interests like figuring out just exactly when was it that our congress threw the constitution out and it now lines a bird cage in some senators office.

My nephew has been in Iraq since last year. His unit was bombed shortly after he arrived – he and the others got everyone in their vehicle and he drove to the hospital – one of his friends didn’t survive, and he has shrapnel in his legs. They have been shot at and bombed since then. He saw a couple of little kids get blown up by a pipe bomb.

Nephew is no monster. He doesn’t complain. He does his job. He actually read the papers before he signed them…something all liberal idiots seem to have trouble doing these days. If you join the armed services you’re not joining a country club. Groups like the IVAW make me sick.

Lucky

This retard apparently doesn’t understand duty or his obligation, and the sheer fact that he cried in fear of being deployed for a second tour and is pursuing this course out of cowardice is beyond aggravating! I still cannot fathom how none of the people in IVAW who claim to have been NCO’s or are/were NCO’s can’t/don’t/won’t live up to their oath or the NCO Creed. They are poor excuses for leaders and poor examples to the Junior Enlisted. They use the anti-war message to cover for their having felt let down by a system that showed them that they truly are not ENTITLED to what they thought they were. I mean, thinking that the military would reimburse you for a HS football injury? How the F***is that line of duty? And a Combat Engineer wearing a CIB? WTF?

Nixon

Blaming “society” for having to join the Army. How old is this guy, 12? He reminds me of the goth kids on South Park.

Richard Romano

These anti-war vets (I use the term loosely of course) are just pure slime…it’s easy to talk when you’re speaking from a distance.

I have never served in the military, but my Dad did. I’ll never forget what he told me once:

“Son, we honor the troops not only because they fight for us, but because they would die for us.”

God bless them every one.

torabora

Because Chiroux did not go, indeed refused to go, somebody innocent Iraqi child died because he wasn’t there to pull the trigger on the killer. He wasn’t there to take a bullet for an innocent Iraqi child child or to save one of his own.

He was cowardly shirking his duty allowing evil to flourish.

You can make bad choices in your life but Karma is a bitch.

WOTN

Chiroux: that’s a frog name, isn’t it? Most of the French descendents of this Nation come from Warrior roots. That’s why most Frogs left in France are as cowardly as this JA. The real warrior genes left France to the artists, poets, and future Ba’athists, Nazis, and Communists.

But, let me introduce you to War Heros: http://waronterrornews.typepad.com/home/hall_of_heroes/

Look closely at the most recent addition: SSG Dockery. 12,000 Americans have read his story. They’re impressed, even if you don’t recognize what true Valor & Honor are.

Read the stories of Jeremiah Workman, LT Chontosh, and CSM Kasal. These are the stories of True Heroes, War Heroes, men willing to risk their own lives for the sake of saving their brothers.

Matthis: You will not likely know if you see me on the street, but you are not fit to spit shine the boots of these Men with your tongue. I know convicted felons with more honor than you.

TAH, TSO, Keep up the good work.

JosephH

While all of you folks are posturing about how noble it is to be a soldier and “serve” your country, please remove those rose-colored glasses and consider the insight Mr. Chiroux gained (whether through “serving” or “observing”).

A Mr. S. Butler drew much the same conclusion as Mr. Chiroux as he wrote during the time between World Wars I and II:

“WAR is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small “inside” group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes. . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Yes, they are getting ready for another war. Why shouldn’t they? It pays high dividends. But what does it profit the men who are killed? What does it profit their mothers and sisters, their wives and their sweethearts? What does it profit their children? What does it profit anyone except the very few to whom war means huge profits?

Yes, and what does it profit the nation?”

Sponge

So, if WWII was a racket, we should all just be speaking German and be proud of the extermination of an entire society of people?

Interesting outlook on things.

JosephH

I believe that WWII was the ONLY justified war that the U.S.A. has been involved in during the last hundred or so years. There is nothing ennobling about sending troops into foreign countries under the guise of altruism; and there’s nothing “patriotic” about going along with the lies our government tells about how we “intervene” only for honorable reasons. If you check out all of the MANY wars/interventions of the past century, you’ll find they were fought, not to protect our freedoms, but to make the world safe for the corporate interests which motivate the U.S.A.’s foreign policy.

As Mr. Butler observed, “War is good for business.” Otherwise, there would be no conceivable reason for We The People to maintain the HUGE permanent standing army we taxpayers are supporting…at astronomical cost.

I wonder if any of the warhawks posting here have EVER questioned the necessity of the wars the U.S.A. has fought.
That great American writer (and true Patriot!) Mark Twain wrote an interesting little piece that should temper any thoughtful person’s enthusiasm for war:

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_War_Prayer

Matt

Ah yes, the great reference Wikipedia. Dude, seriously, SGM Smedley Butler was a great warrior and had some significant insight into the wars waged in the early part of the 20th century. Yes, war is bad. We get it. Having fought in a couple myself, I agree. But sometimes wars have to be fought. No war is a good war. But war might be the answer. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. There are times when war is the only answer. Sanctions didn’t work. No fly areas didn’t work. The UN Oil for Food didn’t work. Now millions of people are free. Wasn’t pretty, wasn’t easy.

BTW- Mark Twain was also a anti-semite who would do Hitler proud.

Raoul

Just as I suspected.

There’s nothing JosephH has to offer other than someone ELSE’s opinion.

I once heard Mao tell Che that JosephH is a wussy. Since they are heros to the left, the left has to go along with “JosephH is a wussy”.

JuniorAG

“but to make the world safe for the corporate interests which motivate the U.S.A.’s foreign policy.”

Yeah, & if we adopted bureaucracy on steroids, aka communism or it’s kissing cousin, socialism, we’d never have wars or interfere in other countries foreign affairs either! Ever hear of “internationalism”? It’s the left winged version of imperialism.
