Dick’s Sporting Goods will stop selling guns at some stores – Despite the fact that its vocal anti-gun stance has caused sales to decline.
Sales have not declined enough. I hope that trend continues.
In an earnings call on March 13, CEO Edward Stack told investors that the sporting goods retailer would stop selling firearms at 125 locations — roughly 17 percent of its stores in the US. Dick’s will replace these firearm sections with other categories, like shoes and clothes, and will also test experiential retail concepts like in-store batting cages.
This significant step away from the gun business comes one year after Dick’s took swift action in response to the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that left 17 students and staff members dead. In a move that sparked both celebration from gun control activists to celebrate and protests from Second Amendment advocates, the company stopped selling guns to customers younger than 21, and pulled assault rifles and high-capacity magazines from all its Dick’s Sporting Goods Stores as well as from its sub-brand Field & Stream.
Stack made it clear that he felt his company needed to take a strong stance in America’s heated gun control debate.
“Thoughts and prayers are not enough,” he wrote in a widely shared statement after the Parkland shooting. “We have to help solve the problem that’s in front of us. Gun violence is an epidemic that’s taking the lives of too many people, including the brightest hope for the future of America — our kids.”
Stack is gullible and naive. You could probably put all the people who walked into a Dick’s Sporting Goods store and legally bought a firearm and then used that weapon to commit a crime at my dining room table and still have seats available.
He hired three lobbyists to push for gun control in Congress, and the company also announced it would destroy all the weapons it had stopped selling.
While Stack stated clearly that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment and a gun owner himself, the company’s actions angered the gun rights community. The National Rifle Association painted Dick’s as an enemy, tweeting that it was “punishing law-abiding citizens,” and the National Shooting Sports Foundation revoked the company’s membership.
Stack clearly has an entirely different understanding of the Second Amendment than I do. Putting three people on the payroll to attack it seems to be diametrically opposed to supporting it.
He claims sales are down 4%, I don’t believe that either. History tells me that the accountants are probably playing games with the numbers to minimize their losses. That works for a short period of time.
As it shutters its gun business in 125 underperforming stores, Dick’s will instead focus on other categories, like shoes and fitness wear. Stack didn’t specify which stores will stop selling guns nor which locations will continue to do so (Vox reached out to Dick’s for comment and did not immediately hear back).
My guess is it is probably more than likely that 25% of its stores are operating in the red at this point. “Underperforming” is usually code for losing money. If they admit 15% are losing money the number is most probably twice that. It’s just my humble opinion of course. I doubt even Stack has the real numbers.
Spend money at Dick’s Sporting Goods and you are helping finance the attack on your rights as an American.
Batting Cages will not put them on the right path.

“Dick’s”. Art imitates life.
Dickless is more like it.
Been in one of their stores once. It wasn’t open yet and we pulled a copper and fiber optic cable thru the duct work. I spliced up the demark/terminals, plugged the ducts with semco, did a conformance test, gathered my tools up and left.
Ain’t been back since. I try to buy most of my needs from independents. Have bought a few things from Academy Sports. A/S seems to have more product, and a better price point. Their distribution center is just a few miles down the road from here and they hired a boat load of locals.
With the fragmentation of the market/customer base and a multitude of competitors, why would you want to run off potential buyers on a warm/fuzzy doomed to failure campaign?
Dumbazzes!
Went into a Dick’s before the gun issue reared it’s head – not impressed with the store (it was dirty and staff just didn’t seem to care to help). Havne’t been back into one since.
Big-5, Sportsman’s Warehouse and Cabella’s are all good. Big-5 has a 10% discount for Active/Retired military and they do seem to have the tennis shoes that I like.
As for Dick’s game plan and earnings – it’s a matter of time before they start closing stores, and not too difficult to play games with the data at their quarterly earning’s call… just got to look in he right places in their earning sheets.
Last time I went to the gun counter at Dicks was about six years ago. The guy was a real jerk and unhelpful. They then opened an Academy Sports down the road and I never returned for any reason. I buy all my sporting goods stuff at Academy as well as a number of firearms. I figure Dicks has lost about $5k worth of business from me alone in the last six years.
Academy is great.
I bought two pistols there and loads of ammo.
Their prices are about the same as any of the online suppliers and you don’t pay for shipping.
All they had was Winchester White for a while in .45, that stuff if filthy, I have to clean my Dawson Optic Sight on my Kimber 1911 after shooting a box of it.
I shoot at the Lone Star Range in Lockhart Texas. It’s an outdoor range and pretty decent to spend time at..
They have a full year deal for $100.00 All you can shoot !!!
Needless to say… I am getting more proficient with my Kimber of late !!!
I’m a big fan of Sportsman’s Warehouse. I haven’t been to a Dick’s in years. I don’t even think we have a Dick’s in my entire State. I know there isn’t one in the Fairbanks area.
The stock took a hit Tuesday largely because earnings were off from predictions.
With these things I tend to look at what the market advisors are suggesting as opposed to the stock performance today.
Dick’s has a decent warchest of over 300 million in cash assets so investor payouts should be safe through 2022 or so. What gets interesting is when advisors switch from buy to neutral which is happening lately. There’s not a lot of “sell” ratings yet, but the buy ratings aren’t popping up as much either…
The neutral/hold/marketperform (whatever iteration your broker likes) is an indicator that Wall Street is waiting to see what will come of the e-commerce options Dick’s is pursuing and if that will help bottom line performance.
If that tanks along with this decision those neutrals will become sells and the price will tank some more. That’s when it gets really interesting for Dick’s. When that cash runs out and investors aren’t seeing dividends as expected, we all know where that goes next.
What’s in a name?
Brand! Your “brand” is your livelyhood.
Make sure you pick a good one.
Dick’s is not a good choice when you decide to be one.
Just sayin.
The Sapper household stopped buying hockey gear/anything at Dicks After the Black rifle ban.
Before I just stopped shopping there. Now well, fuck em.
“As it shutters its gun business in 125 underperforming stores….”
Gee, all the stores around here that sell guns and have range time available are thriving. But they also sell real sporting goods, and lake/stream fishing season will be here soon. And Danner Boots has stuff on sale, so now is the time to getcher gear together.
It appears that there’s a good spring/summer/fall ahead of us.
Plenty o ice fishing going on here.
Local shops are doing good.
Snowmobilers are spending like drunken Sailors.
April brings Brook Trout!
Fish your limit, build a fire and eat them.
Go back and fish your limit again.
Repeat until sundown.
Oh 26, how that brings back some great memories with my dear father and I doing just that activity. We used to always go to a little place in Colorado called Rock Creek. Fish downstream from Finger Rock on Colo. 131 near Yampa. We used to catch little brookies by the bucket load, build a camp fire and eat them right there after roasting over the fire on a nice willow branch. They were always nice and green so they didn’t burn in the camp fire! Oh what great times that brings to mind. I sure miss my dear old Pa. He used to carry me on his creel when I was but 2 years old while he fished down Rock Creek! Thank you so much for triggering those memories!! As far as Dick’s goes, Fuck them and their horse!!
Nice memories you got there Willy.
Happy to trigger you.
I’m in agreement on the memory you shared with us.
Sounds like a ton of fun !!!
Aaahhhhhh…
Good times !!!
Get woke, go broke. Pretty soon their “sporting goods” will consist entirely of yoga pants and Cliff bars.
What Stack is doing is akin to cutting one’s own balls off because his neighbor has eight kids! I loved the Mom & Pop Gun Store who sported the sign “We sell AR15’s because we aren’t Dick’s!”
Dick’s has a wide selection of running shoes and competitive prices. However, with their gun stance I no longer purchase anything from Dick’s. I prefer Olympia Sports which was founded in Maine in 1975 and is still headquartered there. Olympia provides an excellent online shopping experience with low prices and quick delivery times. Since I live in New England I prefer to support our regional companies.
You have more integrity than most of the firearm industry. I’d seriously look at supporting the few manufacturers that did the right thing while continuing to question why so few did. I stopped doing business there after they pulled this as well. The NRA for all its bullshit huffing and puffing about Dick’s sure as fuck have been dead silent regarding the anemic response from the firearm industry. The phony shell game is being exposed regarding real support for the second amendment and frankly all of the big publicly traded firearm companies don’t give two shits and neither does the biggest phony 2nd amendment organization around the NRA which is really just a clever industry marketing organization masquerading as something other.
I suggest gun owners and people that want to really support the 2nd amendment and their rights to get away from the NRA and go to organization that don’t exist simply to advertise products and constantly concede rights away.
Thanks for the reminder.
I need to send the NRA another hundred bucks. I like to do it in honor of something in the news but this time I will do it your honor.
Whatever floats your fudd boat. Shooting skeet on Feinstein’s ass is what Wayne does every weekend or maybe it’s the other way around.
Damn. Now AOC is blaming the NRA for the New Zealand mass murder.
There goes another hundred bucks.
Firearm industry should be ashamed that the company could even pull another stunt like this a year later. What should have happened is the industry should have blacklisted them and pulled their products. Instead only 3 companies did while the rest, continued to do business with them. The for companies that put their money where their real feelings regarding the 2nd amendment are: Springfield Armory, Mossberg, MKS Suply. That’s it. Everyone else regardless of what they try to portray are not for your 2nd amendment rights, they are for their own profit pure and simple and if that means literally funding the opposition to earn a buck so be it.
Absolutely fucking shameful.
Remember this when these fake ass companies try to sell you on their pro second amendment marketing. They had a great chance to put their money where their intentions lay and they didn’t. That includes all of the big publicly traded firearm manufactures.
I’m thinking this is some marketing rope-a-dope. I mean bobbing and weaving, like a boxer not actually roping a dope, but this may actually rope some dopes into making purchases. Anyway…
Maybe they have a bunch of stores that are in upper-class Democrat suburbs where they have not sold as much as a compact .22 revolver in 20 years. So, stop stocking weapons there, instead stock more of the products you do sell. This is just normal business. But Dick’s has to live up to their name so they also make a big SJW style announcement when they are only doing what any normal business would do. They may be surprised to see firearms sales fall off even more at other stores.
To finish my comment – Dick’s may see some increased sales in these stores where they will no longer stock firearms because the SJWs in those areas (the dopes) see the announcement as a good thing.
I see the comments on dick’s are stacked against stack and I won’t make any mistack by buying from stacks, so it all stack’s up against him.
DICKS all of them!
I only buy from my locally owned family gun store, their name I really love, they are called Spray and Pray! How is that for a great name?? Check out their website, they do a hell of a reload business as well. They have a nice indoor range and you can rent just about anything you want to shoot. I think I am going to go there this weekend and fire off a few thousand rounds from a Thomson Sub Machine Gun! That is one of just a few neat firearms you can rent from them! Great way to spend a Saturday morning! As far as Dick’s goes, fuck them, their closest store is 50 miles away and I wouldn’t go there if they had a store on my block, fuck them dry and hard!!
Shop Cabela’s, because they aren’t Dicks.
Batting cages?…
Where people can practice their batting skills?
Oh the outrage! Dick’s is openly supporting the sale of bats and encouraging people to be proficient with them!
That will not bode well for them the next time a bat is used in a crime.
/sarc off/
Dicks cannot go out of business fast enough for me
I like Bass Pro… anywhere where I can buy a rifle, a bow, and a beer in the same trip is a business I want to support.
Haven’t stepped foot in a Dick’s store since they first started this nonsense.
I hear you on Bass Pro and raise you a Cabela’s Outlet where they have the “Tamarack Cafe “ where you can eat any of at least a dozen different animals, Venison, Wild Hog, Buffalo and Elk just to name a few!
I like Cabela’s (same organization, and more accessible than Bass Pro in my neck of the woods), but the beer is a key selling point for me – it’s not necessary, but it’s a nice option. I would appreciate a little more game on the menu, though… especially in either more traditional or more experimental dishes. Deep-fried gator only goes so far, but a wild boar jaeger schnitzel would be amazing.
I don’t shop Dicks we have our own Money Mizer Pawn Shop 10% discount for LE ,Retired ,active, guard reserve and veterans with a DD 214.
In Texas, Academy is the best place I have found for firearms.
Oh, there is one about 148.75 Ent Steps from my front door…
Each Ent Step is approx 1 yard…
This is all PR subterfuge by Dicks, yeah, sure, they stopped selling at Dicks. However, in 2013 they began a subsidiary chain called Field and Stream that sells every scary item related to shooting – was just at one last week. They get to placate the Dems by spouting off about not selling guns while actually selling them under a different name. Wonder if the Press will be bright enough to realize this.
