Keeping A Weather Eye on the Horizon

ojos locos

Good morning.

In the continuing debates over so-called renewable energy, i.e., wind and solar power, some interesting items have come up in my search for information.

For instance, in the UK, homeowners who leased their roofs to solar companies in exchange for free solar power for their homes are now finding that they are stuck there, owing to the terms of the lease, and are unable to sell their homes.  The story from last fall (September 2018) is here:  https://www.thegwpf.com/another-green-fiasco-the-solar-panel-trap-that-means-you-cant-sell-your-home/

Think it can’t happen here? Think again. A lease is a legal document with binding clauses. If you don’t read it, you’re stuck with it, here and over there. In many instances, these leases were written up with no exit clause for the homeowners and many of the companies that originally leased the roof space have gone out of business, selling the leasing rights to another company. Do you want to deal with a tangle like that?

In addition, since Googly-eyes Aoc established her public persona with her Green Nude Eel, apparently the threat of being taxed at 70% of your net worth has rattled a few people who were in favor of the Greenbean stuff a few years back. Bill Gates, for instance, slammed the entire business by bringing up its utter impracticality in this video:

https://www.thegwpf.com/video-bill-gates-slams-unreliable-wind-solar-energy/

It’s worth it to take 2 minutes out of your life to watch it. In 2015, he was supportive of the idea, but now – well, not so much.  I don’t know if the Common Sense Fairy smacked him in the back of the head, or he suddenly realized that that bimbo from NYC is exactly as dumb as a box of rocks. Well, really, the rocks are probably smarter. Essentially, she’s all about ideas – IDEAS!!!! – but not about the practicalities involved, nor in executing them.  He asks a very practical question in that brief video, e.g., can you make steel?

As I recall, during Mao Tse-Tung’s Great Leap Famine, during which 30+ million Chinese citizens died of starvation, among other things, Mao bulldozed the peasants into making steel in their backyards. That didn’t work out so well. He also followed Trofim Lysenko’s nonsense about agriculture.  But he didn’t care, because he was Mao and he didn’t have to care.

Stalin’s agricultural policy was to take the real, experienced farmers off the farms they had turned into productive acreages over several generations, and turn the farms over to groups who knew nothing about farming. But he was enamored of Trofim Lysenko’s insane ideas of agriculture and as a result, starvation became the order of the day. And he didn’t care. He was Stalin. He didn’t have to care.

So here’s a bit of practicality, the real-world kind: someone wrote a Letter to the Editor of my local newsrag, asking questions in regard to whether or not she had paid her taxes before she got elected. After all, as he says: “she’s a socialist, in our American government. The problem is that AOC has never had a job, really. She’s a bartender. That means she was taking cash and tips. So someone could put a very attractive woman in that same bar, monitor her for three months, and see what tips and salary were. Then go back and see if [Ms. Googly-eyes] paid the taxes she was supposed to pay on that money. I bet she didn’t because she’s a socialist, and she doesn’t care. It’s all about her.”

We do have to keep people like Ms. Green Nude Eel in front of us, if for no other reason than to be aware of their level of ignorance and insane, impractical ideas. I guess she thought she could just trounce into Foggy Bottom and have her way, but found out she couldn’t.  Since her proposal was put into the Congressional Record, it’s still there, no matter how much she wants to hide it.  I’m very much in favor of an IRS audit of her bartender income.

Let’s keep a weather eye on this bubbly individual, shall we? I’m quite sure now that she doesn’t know how to do anything practical, including cooking and laundry.

Requires watching indeed.

Earlier this month, Ocasio-Cortez posted an 11-page Google document in the form of a nonbinding legislative resolution that has become the most authoritative version of the Green New Deal, a broad outline for the current conception of the socialist-style plan.

AOC’s nonbinding resolution

Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal resolution, introduced along with Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), has already been endorsed by more than 45 Democratic representatives. The deal received high-profile endorsements from Senators Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Bernie Sanders.

Guess who just threw his hat in the ring for 2020? Bernie the Socalist, of course. And Loopy Uncle Joe is not far behind.

There but for the Grace of God, the Strength of Will of President Trump, and the full Awakening of the American People go us.

We should fully understand, now, why history has been dumbed down in schools over the last forty years. Those of us who came of age in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s, recognize the failed policies of socialistic states.

Those on the left that think it’s a good idea should pack their asses off to a true socialist utopia and enjoy life there. Oops my bad, they don’t want to move. They want to destroy America to maintain their death grip on power.

Hopefully, they will continue to devour one another. If not, then it will be pitchfork and torches time.

Perry Gaskill

No offense, Ex, but the GWPF (originally from the UK Sunday Telegraph) story doesn’t seem that good. For one thing, it’s UK specific which means a different set of real estate laws. For another, it does a poor job of explaining how the business model worked for the solar companies trying to run a subsidy scam. For example, if a solar company leased a home owner’s roof to install panels, the contract obligation would likely mean payments would go to the homeowner. If the property was sold, there might indeed be a deed covenant to continue lease payments to the new owner, but I’m not sure how that would amount to a downside under normal circumstances. Here’s a different take on the solar lease issue localized to the U.S. market:

https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2019-sunrun-solar-panels/

Something else I’ve run into lately, and it’s almost never mentioned in the solar debate, relates to structure engineering issues involved with panel installation. An example is that anyone who is familiar with residential building codes is probably aware that the loading requirements for a roof are much less than, say, for a floor. Solar panels are not light; if you plan to put a bunch of them on a house, it can be the equivalent of trying to park a Prius up there.

SFC D

Firefighters ain’t exactly fond of all that shit on the roof either.

Fyrfighter

It does tend to complicate operations a bit.. as well as having the potential for the house to be energized even after the power is cut..

Perry Gaskill

Point taken. Still, it seems to me that comparing a typical renter’s lease to a solar panel installation is apples and oranges. This is mainly because the installation amounts to a real estate lien. Normally such liens are worked out when the property changes hands during escrow. Either the previous owner or the new one takes on the responsibility of cashing out the solar company or continuing with the existing contract. The hysterical headline “Another Green Fiasco: The Solar Panel Trap That Means You Can’t Sell Your Home” is not correct, and this is suggested in the rest of the story which is maddeningly sparse on details.

Read carefully, for example, and a main beef is not that the 72 year-old homeowner can’t sell his house, it’s that the solar company put either a £10,500 or £23,000 encumbrance on it which needs to be cashed out to clear the title. This is roughly similar to taking out a second mortgage from a bank to remodel a kitchen, but then deciding you don’t want to pay up because you’re going to be moving. It might also be mentioned that the old guy has been enjoying free electricity for eight years.

Still another factor is that the original solar company is probably not who’s on the hook for the cost of the solar panels; those guys are probably drinking mohitos on a beach in the Caymans. The real victim here is more likely to be the British taxpayer who underwrote the subsidy.

We might also want to keep in mind Shakespeare’s suggestion, “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers”…

Green power is working out great when placed where it is supposed to go. Texas for example will soon generate most of it’s electricity with wind power. That is because windmills are a good idea in a State with a bunch of wind and full of practical people who are not a bunch of hypocrites (unlike Mass).

Within 15 years California will generate most of it’s power with Solar. A sunny state with technology and import industry that can supply rooftop solar and the tech support to run it.

That is merely two of the most populous states in the country. The so called “Green Revolution” has been in full swing for over a decade. Late coming socialist good idea fairies need not apply.

AnotherPat

It is starting in Virginia as well:

“Massive East Coast Solar Project Generates Fury From Neighbors In Virginia”:

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/massive-east-coast-solar-project-generates-fury-from-neighbors-in-virginia

5jc

I have had a solar project down the road from me for five years. None of those things that the NIMBYs are bitching about have come true.

Ranchers and farmers love solar and wind projects because… well free money. And it does not rape the land like shale production does. It does not even interfere with their use of the land and sometimes helps. This is in a state with zero incentives for clean energy they are still turning a profit.

Only an idiot would turn down low impact, low cost energy and farmers and ranchers are not idiots.

26Limabeans

Both solar and Wind projects require inverters which pollute the rf spectrum. The noise floor has been rising for years and it is now getting serious.
The FAA and Air Force signed off on the obvious radar clutter.
Sierra club, Audobon, EPA……all signed off on the mountain, birds and trees and the FCC signed off on the noise floor.

Having worked in rf screen rooms for a few decades I have paid attention to this natural resource we call the airwaves. Still do and it is sad to watch it become a polluted pond where the bottom is no longer visible.

5jc

They can if they are not shielded. The one down the road from is. Zero RF leakage is quite possible.

The airwaves are very crowded compared to 30 years ago. Solar power plants are a tiny part of a really big problem.

26Limabeans

“Zero RF leakage is quite possible”.

Physics and Math say no.
The noise radiates from the transmission lines as well.
You got a “perfect” filter for that?

“The airwaves are very crowded compared to 30 years ago”

Signals are much cleaner and narrow band but I am talking about the “noise floor”, not overcrowding by legit users.
Take away all the legit users and what you have left is the natural noise floor.

“Solar power plants are a tiny part of a really big problem”

So lets put one on every rooftop and see if we can’t make them a bigger part.

A Proud Infidel®™

FUCK the wind generators, those damn things have already killed more Raptors (Birds of Prey) than DDT did, BUT since it’s something treehuggers want that shit gets a free pass!

Hate_me

I’ve always said, place the wind farms directly behind the solar farms… the solar farms light them on fire and the windmills cut them up. All we need are bucket farms.

Joking aside, I used to volunteer at a wildlife rehab center that specializes in raptors when I was bored between tours… I hate what these alternative energy sources do to those beautiful creatures. I’ve flown a Harris hawk off my wrist – it is an incredible experience, and I hate how neglected the wildlife is in these discussions. Alternative energy has a cost the AOCs of the world are entirely unwilling to see; but when your stance is based on emotion over principle, I can see how concepts like ecology are overlooked.

timactual

” It does not even interfere with their use of the land”

How does that work? Those panels/towers/whatever have to go someplace. Then there is access for maintenance, transmission lines, etc.

Perry Gaskill

Tim, it seems to me 5jc has a valid point. If you live in a rural area, solar and wind have some attractions. For example, if you have a house and a big-ass pole barn, it’s possible to put solar panels on a roof and use the same structure footprints. The roof pitches need to work for southern exposure, but that’s not a big deal for new construction.

A downside of wind, at least in California, is that the cost of putting up a wind generator can be equal to the cost of the permits to allow it. Also keep in mind that ranchers have been using wind power to fill stock tanks going back to the 1880s and nobody has had a problem with it.

Still another issue is that utility companies often disdain service in rural areas because it’s a maintenance headache and PUC-derived loss leader for them. Which often means that rural service gets turned on last in a power outage. Too, it’s probably relevant to point out, for example, that it was PG&E’s 100-year-old transmission towers that were most likely the cause of burning down the town of Paradise, CA last November.

This isn’t always about being a Prius-driving Sierra Club douche. Sometimes it’s about the prospect of taking things off the grid, and being able to tell the electric company to wipe their nether parts with their exorbitant bills. The financials, including installation costs and ROI, are also starting to make it a no-brainer depending on specific circumstances, locale, etc.

26Limabeans

“Also keep in mind that ranchers have been using wind power to fill stock tanks going back to the 1880s and nobody has had a problem with it”

Those are mechanical devices.
Elegant use of nature and Physics. Simple and clean.

The Amish around here have air compressors mounted on windmill hubs with a small buffer tank (old 20lb propane) then a line down to a huge old propane tank. They run the entire metal shop business on air. From wind. That is freaking cool as hell.
And they do it all under the backdrop of a giant wind farm which they despise for ruining the environment.
And they damn sure know a scam when thy see one.
