Woman Plans to Use Gun Buy Back Cash to Buy Bigger Gun
The “gun buy back” program. Police department purchases weapons from people willing to part with their weapons for cash. In theory, criminals and law-abiding citizens alike would turn their weapons in for cash. With “less weapons on the street”, the chances of gun violence goes down.
But, how many criminals, not bashful about using a gun in the commission of a crime, would turn their guns in for cash? Would enough of them turn their weapons in, for cash, in order for the city’s investment to have an impact against crime?
How about the people gaming the system? From Reason.com:
The program reportedly cost the city $250,000, but there is little evidence that buyback programs are effective in reducing violence, or even in reducing the number of firearms in circulation–as one woman ably demonstrated.
Kathleen Cairns, a WBFF Baltimore journalist, tweeted a picture of a woman who was surrendering a 9mm. She hoped to use the money from the program to buy an even bigger gun.
There are other ways to game the system as well. For example, the city is offering $25 for every “hi-capacity” magazine turned in. Some digging from Daniel J. Mitchell of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) discovered that such a “hi-capacity” magazine can be purchased online for about $12. The $13 in profit may not seem like much money to some, but it can be the difference between paying for food, rent, a bill, or even a Christmas gift.

I think I love this woman. No, I’m sure I love her. You go girl.
Hear ya Chief. If she can cook too, that’s a keeper. She must be wanting her a nice 1911.
Did she get more than the gun was worth? Even better, if she did.
Baltimor-ons. One would think that the city gov’t would have learned by now. Or maybe I’m looking at this wrongly. It’s not about getting guns, it’s about getting votes for staging this organized stupidity. In 2017, 343 people were killed in Baltimo. Of the ‘victims,’ a greater percentage of them had previous gun-crime histories than their assailants. It certainly isn’t folks such as K. Cairns who are blasting away in Harm City. The city is busily buying back long guns. That’s great. In 2016, a total of six people were killed by rifle or shotgun. Morons.
The last line should have begun, “In 2017….”
$25 for every cheap ass high cap mag I can buy online? This could be a lucrative side job. Especially if they consider “high capacity” to be >10.
Checked a discounter and surplus G3 20-rounders are going for as little as $5. 400% profit would be a sweet deal.
And of course, they took a very dangerous empty tube off the streets.

Isn’t that a piece of plumbing hardware?
Looks like an Expended or inert AT 4 tube…It fires an 84 mm anti armor round; once used its basically a fiberglass tube.
Bet it would make a great spud gun.
If you dolled that up a little bit, could it look like something out of Star Wars or Star Trek?
That would really be a hoot. Put the Rebel or Starfleet symbols on it, a new coat of paint, a few microlights that run in sequence like they do on Christmas lights, and dazzle the cops.
“Yessir, I got it from some aliens who were here on a look-see, prior to a planned shopping binge. They said it was fired once, but the phaser was aimed in the wrong direction and punched a hole in the warp drive.”
There was another gun buyback someplace else (CA if I’m correct) where someone brought a piece of PVC pipe in that was decked out to look like a Rocket Launcher and the Po-po gave him money for it!
What a waste of a spent AT4 tube, it would make a cool Man Cave wall decoration!
It has happened in LA and Frisco. Made for great press, removing a “weapon of war” from the streets. One was a training model and the others were as worthless as this B’more tube.
Some folks have figured out that an AR lower cost $25-$50 but are upwards of $250 at the police station buy back.
Merica!
That’s awesome. Hope she gets a Kel-Tec Sub 2000 or Beretta CX4 for that pistol. Great carbines for home protection, and won’t break the bank.
How can you buy back something you never originally sold?
Good question.
I suppose it’s catchier than, We-Are-The-Government-And-We-Will-Use-The-Money-We-Took-From-You-And-Buy-Guns-At-Inflated-Prices-To-Make-You-Think-You-Are-Somehow-Safer-And-Then-Destroy-The-Guns Program.
Dave has a good point. I hate like hell to hear some celebrity or politician claim they are giving back to some inner city shit hole. Can’t they just say – we’re giving to…., to say give back would be to return something you got. And I doubt that’s the case.
Smart lady…
I hope she succeeds!!!
Kudos to her.
One thing not covered in this post is this from the reason.com article:
Mayor Catherine Pugh and Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle announced a gun buyback program—the first in six years—last week. Pugh said that the program was intended to “get the guns off of our streets.”
The “Interim” tag is there because the previous Police Commissioner resigned earlier this year after he was charged with tax evasion. He pleaded guilty to those charges the other day.
The tax evader was appointed after a City Commissioner took part in the Freddie Grey protests / riots. He was sacked for not doing enough to lower crimes in the city.
Of course, he was replacing the Police Commissioner who was ordered and famously told police officers to “stand down” in the wake of the riots / protests for the Freddie Grey death.
Ironically, 6 members of an “elite” Baltimore Police Department “Gun Trace Task Force” were convicted of charges including racketeering conspiracy, racketeering and Hobbs Act robbery charges.
Prior to the Freddie Grey mess, the FBI had indicted over 100 officers for racketeering and other charges in a tow truck / repair scheme.
In light of all this, Baltimore just crossed the 300 homicide threshold for this year – the fourth year in a row where the City has topped the 300 people killed mark. Statistically, that is the highest rate of homicides per 100,000 people in the country.
Baltimore doesn’t have a legal gun problem. It has an ethics problem and a police department problem which means that no one feels they have to abide by the law.
Buying back guns won’t matter one iota until the City gets serious about internal corruption.
Whoops! The City Commissioner that took part in the protests was appointed to replace the Police Commissioner that was sacked for the Freddie Gray debacle..
I kind of left that part out.
The real issue? Baltimore has been run by liberal Democrats since 1967, the last time there was a Republican Mayor. Every single member of the Baltimore City Council is a Democrat and the results speak for themselves. The people keep voting the inept, the incompetent, the corrupt, and the failures into office, so no surprise of what it is, and little chance of getting any better.
AW1Ed,
While you are technically correct, many people felt that William Donald Schaefer had more conservative ideas and principles than liberal.
Schaefer did a lot for Baltimore and was always fighting unions, the City Council and members of his own party. His revitalization of the Inner Harbor around the USS Constellation was accomplished without government funds and regulations which is why after he left, liberals raised taxes on that area. His ideas of accountability in government drove the left crazy.
(He was also an US Army vet having joined on the day after Pearl Harbor and after the war remained in reserves until 1979 when he retired as a colonel.)
I remember Schaefer as a DINO, but memories are faulty.
Since Schaefer the city has had much more radical and left leaning governance which has led to the downfall of the City as well as the exodus of people and jobs.
Holy shite! I just looked and they’ve had THREE police commissioners just this year! That is a sign of some seriously messed up activity at the top. That whole city council, mayor, et. al should be sacked and start fresh from the top down.
Perhaps she has seen the error of her ways and has become an acolyte if brother John Moses Browning. Please open your bibles to Revelations 19:11, feel the holy power!
The Festival of brother John Moses Browning will be celebrated on the date of his birth- 23 January. Come all ye sinners with your plastic, your trigger “safety” and calibers that do not begin with the numeral “4” and repent.
Amen.
I am going to celebrate his birthday by buying a Rock Island Armory 1911. Well built and still the same design.
About half the price of a Colt 1911.
And I’ll be getting her in a .45, because ammo is expensive and shooting twice is just silly…
Yes officer I’d like to buy back this mousetrap and use the proceeds to purchase a Claymore Mine.
Claymore mines make great junkyard fencing and after hours doorbells,
“Please, just push the red button right here”…..
“We’ll be right out with a sponge and Shopvac. “We’ll be happy to notify your next of kin at no additional charge too”…..
