Kansas woman, 74, fatally shoots burglar; has heart attack

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. — Authorities say a 74-year-old Kansas woman shot and killed an intruder while on the phone with a 911 dispatcher and then had a heart attack.

The Kansas City Star reports that Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said Thursday that the woman is recovering and is expected to be OK. He says she “obviously” won’t face charges over the death of 41-year-old Ralph Byrd Jr., who broke into her Leavenworth home early Saturday.

Thompson said she had reported an attempted burglary of her home about a week before. After that, she obtained a .22-caliber handgun that she took with her to bed at night.

1 Suspect Dead, Another at Large Following Attempted Robbery in Prospect: Police

Connecticut State Police are investigating an attempted robbery in Prospect that left one person dead on Friday night.

Troopers were dispatched to Route 69 Auto Sales shortly before 7 p.m. after getting a report of an attempted robbery.

Police said two men entered the store and began assaulting at least three people inside. During that time, one of the victims, who police said is a legal permit holder in Connecticut, fired at least one shot and both suspects fled on foot.

According to police, one of the suspects was struck by at least one bullet and was found dead behind the store. The second suspect is still at large.

New model Blackhawk in .357mag with custom front sight and Walnut grips?

26Limabeans

Yeah, I noticed the lack of a logo embedded in the grips.
Keep em comin and I’ll guess my best.

David

Looks more like a .45 Colt to me. Judging by what appears to be an overtravel stop behind the trigger, the muzzle wear, the grips, and the front sight, someone takes their toy seriously.

26Limabeans

“muzzle wear”
I saw that.

Right handed owner with a slight limp.

5th/77th FA

Shoulda limped over to a certain saloon keeper and showed her his “gun”. She shore did want him to.

rgr769

All Rugers have what you are calling an “overtravel stop.” It is a pin with a small coil spring behind it to force the trigger forward, as Rugers do not have a flat trigger spring as part of the flat bolt spring in Colts. There is no way to tell the caliber of the Rugers from the photos. They came in multiple calibers, including even .30 cal carbine.

26Limabeans

“There is no way to tell the caliber of the Rugers from the photos”

True, but knowing available barrel lengths and cylinder fluting nuances one can make a pretty good guess.
The single six with two different caliber cylinders is a good photo puzzle. Unless you can read the s/n.

David

AW1Ed – clarification for you: .45 Colt (aka .45 Long Colt) is a caliber. A Colt .45 is a gun. 26L – If you blow up the area around the trigger guard- the bottom line is where the gun says “BLACKHAWK”. The line above that says the caliber and while the exact caliber is hard to read, there are clearly two numbers in the caliber, and the shape of the numbers is pretty clearly .45. Don’t think they made the three-screw Blackhawk in .44 Special or .38, .357 would be three digits, and the second number is clearly not a 1 as it would be in the case of .41 Magnum. Rgr769, think you are referring to the trigger spring plunger you can see on some old three-screw models, but it looks to me like this is a separate stop installed a few millimeters lower on the trigger. I’ll stand by my assessment as a somewhat modified 3-screw Ruger .45 Colt Blackwhawk.

rgr769

You are correct that three screw Blackhawks did not come in .38 special. There was no need. All .357 revolvers can and will shoot 38 special. However, the reverse is not true. I have a 1956 Colt SAA in .38 special and it will not chamber a .357 cartridge. Likewise for .44 special/44 magnum.

26Limabeans

“Likewise for .44 special/44 magnum”

The Super Blackhawk in .44mag also shoots .44 Special.
I wore out a early one and traded it to the factory for a Hunter model at a nice discount.

rgr769

For those not in the know, a .44 Special revolver will not accommodate .44 magnum cartridges. The reason is because the gun was not designed to accommodate the higher chamber pressures of the magnum round. Ruger did not bother to make a .38 or .44 special because anyone who wanted to shoot the less powerful cartridge could readily do so in the magnum chambered pistols. .44 Special is a very comfortable and accurate cartridge to shoot in any pistol; it is inherently more accurate than the .45 Colt round.

David

Dunno about “need”… sometimes the shorter round is dandy by itself. For instance I had (before the boating accident!) a lovely .44 Special New Model. Smaller, lighter, and faster to me.

rgr769

That is the old model Blackhawk (three screw). I have a pair of them I shoot at CAS matches. All I have seen came with factory walnut grips. Actually, the three screw guns may have been called New Model, as well. The more recent Blackhawks all have only two screws through the frame.
The lower pistol is a Colt SAA in .45 cal colt with an all blue frame. The front sight blade has been filed down to make it shoot point of aim. The grips on the Colt may have come that way. I ordered a SASS Colt that came with buffalo horn grips with no logo, but I ordered it that way. Since the gun is all blue, it was likely ordered that way from the Custom Shop.

rgr769

I have over a dozen SAA’s in several calibers. I started out shooting .45’s, then went to .44-40, then .38-40 and finally .38 special like most other CAS shooters. I have both Colt SAA’s and a pair of Italian made clones. They all shoot quite well, but the old Rugers are the most accurate.

rgr1480

My Colt’s SAA is .357 with a 4-3/4″ barrel; I substituted the black plastic grips with 2-piece ivory grips. Wish I went with a single-piece grip. My initials are carved on the grip a’la Patton’s “GSP”.

I used to have a 7-1/2 barrel SAA, but it was just too long for me.

rgr769

I made a set of one piece grips for the mate to one of my other SAA’s that has custom one piece ivories. I made them from a couple of blanks I bought from an ivory carver in Ohio. Doing so requires a great deal of filing, sanding and fitting. Then you have to carefully glue the grip halves to the fitted piece of spacer wood inside the grip frame. They were the second set of one piece grips I made. I would recommend doing wood ones first before attempting real ivory (if you can find the blanks anymore, as in most states it is illegal to sell elephant ivory even if pre-ban and it cannot be sold across state lines).

26Limabeans

“That is the old model Blackhawk (three screw)”

Nice catch!

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66, ARNG 75-77

Nice looking wheel guns. Only wheel guns I own are the S&W Mod. 14 .38 6in. barrel with a Bowmar rib, front and rear Bowmar sights which I used when I shot comp on the Brink’s pistol team and a Chief’s special .38 in mint condition from my upstairs neighbor for a hundred bucks 2 years ago.

Graybeard

Kinda wish I still had the Blackhawk in .357 Mag I had 40+ years ago.

I got it in trade for a Kawasaki 50 with a seized engine, and gave it in trade for a Winchester 30-30 that I still use as my deer gun.

Only way I could afford the deer gun at the time, but I loved that pistol.

rgr769

I have an early one with the factory brass back strap and trigger guard/frame. I wouldn’t take a $1,500 for it, as it once belonged to a friend who passed a few years ago. I still shoot it regularly.

11B-Mailclerk

The added example pictures at the end contain an interesting specimen. That Colt is not actually a .45. It is the airgun version of the Single Action Army.

Look closely at the front of the cylinder. The chamber mouths are beveled/countersunk ( not done on the cartridge firing version), and you can see the nose of the air gun cartridges for th .177 pellet, which look kinda like a hollow point, but are brass, not copper. (Some are nickel)

AW1Ed/other Admins:

You may want to consider running a separate post/thread on this developing story.

From the U.S. Naval Institute News webpage:

“UPDATED: U.S. 5th Fleet Commander Found Dead in Bahrain”

https://news.usni.org/2018/12/01/breaking-u-s-5th-fleet-commander-found-dead-bahrain

“Vice Adm. Scott A. Stearney, commander of U.S. 5th Fleet, was found dead in his quarters in Bahrain on Saturday, according to a statement from Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson.

While an investigation is ongoing, the death of Stearney will almost certainly be ruled a suicide, a U.S. defense official told USNI News. An official determination on the cause of death is expected by mid-week, USNI News has learned.

And on a happier note, there’s this story from Fox News:

“US Navy commissions new destroyer Thomas Hudner in Boston”

https://www.foxnews.com/us/us-navy-commissions-new-destroyer-thomas-hudner-in-boston

‘BOSTON – The U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned its newest guided-missile destroyer, named for a Navy pilot from Massachusetts who received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Korean War.

Much of the commissioning ceremony for the USS Thomas Hudner, held in Boston, paid tribute to the late Thomas Hudner. He was a Fall River native and longtime Concord resident who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry Truman for crash-landing his plane to try to save the life of Ensign Jesse Brown, who was trapped behind enemy lines during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in December 1950.

[…]

Hudner died last November at age 93. However, he lived to personally attend the April 2017 christening ceremony at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine for the massive Arleigh Burke-class destroyer that bears his name.

On Saturday, Hudner’s widow Georgea and Barbara Miller, wife of retired Vice Adm. Michael Miller, had the honors of ordering the crew to “man our ship and bring her to life.” Within seconds, the crew members rushed aboard, taking their positions along the decks of the ship as the U.S. Navy’s march song “Anchors Aweigh” was performed.

I see your Destroyer and raise you this Destroyer. And it has ECM capabilities!

No offense to Thomas Hudner.
Badly placed humor.

5th/77th FA

In a real shooting war, how long you think it would take our Navy Boys and Girls to turn that Iranian Floating Tin Can into something useful, like a reef?

RGR 4-78

“Hudner died last November at age 93.”

It is a shame that he had to wait for the SJW’s to milk the system before he was Honored.

“…milk the system….”

I see what you did there.

You done good Bro. Bunch of us dickweeds out here really appreciate what you and the whole gang have done keeping things going. Today’s comments maybe close to a record for Sunday FGS. Been LMAO all day back and forth, and noticing how few of the comments are actually on the subject matter. Loved it.

Puppies on a leash. What the Tide did 4th qtr on evening last; speaking of which, where dahell is AnotherPat? Still hung over from celebrating a damn good game?

My thoughts on sinking the Iranian Tin Can. Let everybody count coup. Call for a T.O.T. from every weapon platform we have, all to arrive at the same time. Film at 11.

5th/77th FA

Of course we’ll include them. May bump their point of impact more toward the land side/port facilities. You know the boys and girls in blue would get their britches bunched if they couldn’t earn their participation ribbon. The horror! May cause them to head off to the basement with charles w. They have staplers, you know!

Messkit

“Colt” is fake. There will be ONLY 3 screws on the left side for the hammer pivot, trigger pivot, and bolt pivot.

Yours, has pins.

rgr769

I think Messkit was just being observant and showing he pays attention to detail. I didn’t catch it and I have quite a few of them that are for reelz. Just proves once again that stuff on the innertoobs may be fake.

rgr769

You should not. I was fooled as well, and I have a gun safe full Colt SAA’s. Plus, I just shot a pair of them a few weeks ago at a cowboy shoot.

rgr769

Actually Messkit, you have a point. The purported colt is lacking the screw head for the hammer pivot screw. And there is an apparent hole in the forward portion of the frame that doesn’t belong there. I took out one of my Colt SAA’s and I see the grip on the pistol in the photo is a little too long and the contours are a little off. I am thinking this is a photo of a repro or some computer generated non-photo graphic.

Grand total of 5 comments on the subject of the FGS post. (yeah, I counted ’em) Gotta love it!

Single .22 shot to the head by the 74 year old woman ended the miscreants’ career.
Just goes to show you really don’t need any training to point and shoot a handgun.
And .22 is a suitable caliber for self defense..
Makes me feel better about my wife having a .380!
