Army Retro Uniform OKd for 2020
Well, it’s official: the U.S. Army is going retro to its World War II “pinks and greens” for officers by 2020, as was discussed on TAH last year. The remainder of the force has until 2028 to change from current blue uniforms to the Army greens.
The Army Blues will revert to being strictly a formal dress uniform.
From the article: The standard uniform set-up will require pants and brown leather oxfords for both men and women. Women will have the option to wear a pencil skirt and pumps. Everyone will also be able to buy a leather bomber jacket as an outerwear option.
The rest of the Army would have until 2028 to pick up the new uniform, the release said.
I’ll take the bomber jacket and change the pencil skirt to an A-line skirt, which is more attractive of chubby girls, and you’ve got a hit.
Now if we can just persuade the Army that Hello! Kitty pink camo will keep everyone safe from The Bad Guys, we’ll be fine.

The Navy dropped the ball when they retired the “Aviation Green” uniform for Officers and Chiefs. Great looking outfit and no surprise- it was originally a Marine uniform.
Edit- I like the Hello Kitty camouflage idea- the bad guys will fall over laughing so hard one can just walk up and take their weapons.
I found the fabric online. I intend to make a full set of cargo pants, pockets and all, and shirt with patch pockets, plus a neon pink Eisenhower-style jacket with a large Hello! Kitty patch on the shoulder.
How about tan shoes and pink shoelaces with a polka dot vest, and a big panama with a purple hat band, toodoohoohooohooo
LOL
The khaki service dress looked so sharp, but CNO Elmo Zumwalt deep sixed it in early ’74. Seemed liked a very versatile uniform, as it would perfectly complement the current class B khakis worn by officers & chiefs. Mike Mullen tried reviving it, and many flags wore it on a trial basis, but apparently due to cost it was dropped.
How about pink submarines?
https://youtu.be/XyTWmH27oAs
Only yellow submarines!
Pink submarines look like fish. Whales will swallow them! Leviathan will rise from the depths!
I have one of those, long, hard and full of seamen 😅
But have you ever torpedoed a truck?
Hey…only the incomparable Cary Grant can torpedo a trick. Well, with the able assistance of Tony Curtis, of course. I haven’t seen that movie in forever.
It’s supposed to be “truck”…fucking phone
ONLY after they put in the screen doors on the subs! 😉
You know what burns my ass….besides a flame about 3 ft high? All the services got a wild hair by some moron brass to change uniforms…and they all looked great before, now it seems many are getting smart and going back…bad news is…the A.H.’s spent millions of dollars on a hair brain STUPID idea..imho
Oh no, the Army can’t go all retro with a leather bomber jacket and expect the Air Force to stand idly by. Expect an announcement shortly that the USAF will be changing its dress uniform to a four pocket coat with waist belt.
That was already proposed a decade ago and the incoming CSAF shit canned and rightly so. Right now the USAF has bigger fish to fry like keeping pilots. Although I can see it remerge. It might just be easier to switch to the Army one, LOL. Were back to wearing their fatigues again. Everything seems to go full circle.
Bomber jackets for everyone sounds like the USAF’d 90’s idea when McPeak decided that everyone would look like pilots and had the cops wear blue bombers and all our BDU’s had leather flightsuit style name tags for while.
I like the look of the bomber jacket and the crushed cap from WWII that the Liberator pilots wore. Didn’t they also wear those, flying the Hump while ferrying supplies in to China?
That stuff was so cooooool!!!!
All Pilots will now wear this:

go to US WIngs and get a real leather one
Starbux, I remember the proposed retro-style uniforms, including the choker collar variant. Thankfully I came in after the leather flightsuit placards on the BDU.
I agree we’ve got bigger fish to fry, I’m just saying we’ll see this trickle into the USAF. The Navy and Marines have a dress uniform of heritage. Now that the Army does, they won’t want to be the only ones left with a “modern” dress uniform, which really does look very corporate.
How about a Sam Brown belt over the coat, now that would be nifty and the cat’s meow.
My father could tune our asses up with his Sam Brown belt. (boys only) Fortunately, we learned early that when momma or daddy said something, they really meant it.
Introduce a Leather Jacket as a Uniform Item and just watch the PETA idiots go batshit crazy!
Make it Python leather for the two-fer: exolodey PITA and clean out the Everglades.
Now -that- was a weird auto-corrupt
explodey PETA
No. PITA describes that organization pretty accurately
On the plus side, it does appear that the beret as a regular uniform item for everybody is going bye-bye.
Now it can be returned to the people who’ve earned it.
In your face Shin. Although now they have the Brown Beret. Hope it makes them feel special.
I was AD back in the day when the Black Beret was RANGERS ONLY and IMHO it needs to go back to that.
Rangers stole it from the Tankers who were awarded it by France after WW2. So who really should wear it?
In the late 70s the Border Cav units stationed along the East-West German border wore them. (Black Berets)

Like they don’t have anything else to spend money on… maybe they can get ideas from Kim Jung Un. now. ONE fatigue work uniform, maybe 2-3 different camo patterns depending on where the particular operating theater is issued in theater as needed, one dress uniform… what the hell is so hard about that? How much of the combined Pentagon (and individual SMs’ pocket cash) could be saved like that? Uniforms should not be like new car updates every three years or so. Pick something and stay with it a very long time.
Will the new uniform help Go ARMY beat NAVY? Well…no they don’t need any help in that department. How many alive today remember the WWII Greatest Generation Uniform and can relate to it? How many more bradley mannings can we retain if they’re given the option of the pencil skirt v the “pink” trousers? How many procurement contractors got a little something extra in their paychecks for constantly changing this? When we go back to the Ike Jacket, are the demon crats gonna squawk cause he was a Republican President? Will they demand a Truman Jacket? After all he was an Army Vet of WWI. Will the Navy get their pea jacket back and it be called a Kennedy Jacket? Does all this matter? Will it help with training budget? Am I rambling? Do I like the Hello Kitty idea? yes, that’ll be funny as hell!
It will take more than a uniform to beat NAVY! OORAH 😉
Navy is making a fashion statement this year. I’m not kidding. Big hoopla in October for the new football uniform to be worn at this year’s Army-Navy Game. If you’re gonna get your ass kicked, you may as well look good while it’s happening.
Those new uniforms will go great with songs like American Patrol, In The Mood, Little Brown Jug etc
This retro uniform this hit us first in 2014…and I’m glad.
Our officer’s got their “pips n crowns” back, and apparently we are going back to Redcoats for Infantry dress uniforms in a few years.
I believe this will be an improvement for both of us. Pinks and Greens look cool as hell!
It’s 20F and looks like snow down here in my kingdom. And I saw/photographed a sun dog last night at sunset, which means snow to come, too. Usually, I see them in the morning.
I blame the dormant Sun for it all.
You still want to move?
It’s 55 here with intermittent strong winds. I started vacation the day before the Camp Fire kicked off, so I’m skipping this particular siege. Fine by me, as I got my shit pushed in plenty this year and had more than my fill of near-death experiences.
We could sure use a few feet of that snow out west.
I was wondering if you were going to be involved in this season’s festivities. Glad you’re safe, buddy!
Hope you and yours stay Safe. This is the worst Ive seen as far as death and destruction of Houses.
The entire town of Paradise was burned off the Map. about 6,400 HOMES ( not just structures) destroyed. Several confirmed dead and over 100 missing. 29,000 people lost thier dwellings.
These fires are NO ACCIDENT! I have heard the term Agenda 21 tossed about, I need to do some research on that….but sounds like a NWO bullshyt again imho!
Hey, that is still 20 degrees warmer than it was here, this weekend.
…..gotta go take care of a pesky White Walker 😉
80+ down here in Fl.
Ex-PH2, take a look at Sun City Hilton Head, actually in Bluffton. It’s cold here today, 63F and rainey. By Friday low 70 to high 60s and sunny. We have a large active veterans group here Sun City Veterans, with members from MGs and all ranks of enlisted from all services, WWII, Korea, Vietnam.
That belt on the coat is gonna be hell to cinch for the fat guys and gals especially come official photo time. Overall, I like the pinks and greens but prefer the current dress blue uniform I wore prior to retiring.
It seems like the Army has uniform envy all over again. The US Marine Corps dress blue uniform (choker) is the sharpest ever and endures decade after decade. I think the Navy dress whites for officers and CPOs is a close second. At least the Army moved on from the old dress green uniform.
I’ve got a curveball for them. How about we 86 the Air Force, fold it back into the Army as the Army Air Corp, pre-1947 style.
Same uniforms, closer ties, less paperwork in this supposedly paperless age.
The old 50 mission crush will look good again in “pinks and greens” and we will definitely keep the A-10 for damn sure.
An added bonus would be seeing all the new Airmen have to complete BCT instead of 8 weeks of touchy-feely and “if you can’t find your gloves, use your pockets”.
Just my thoughts of course but some of them make me giggle out loud. This is my 3rd day on pain meds, post-op from Friday so, be kind. And as Hondo writes (smile).
How’s this for a recruiting commercial:
A-10 lands and taxis towards the camera. Camera swings to one side and focuses on the cockpit as the canopy opens. The pilot is wearing a crush hat and headset instead of a helmet. The pilot lights up a fat stogie. Text fade-in: USAAF.
Cool Brother!
I can get behind that…I’ve served in both!
I bet they all have cooties too!
OOPS, that post was intended for today’s post about the incoming invading commie peasant hoard.
I gotta stop having Scotch for lunch!
Switch to Bourbon.
NOOO switch to “Jack Daniels” LOL
Oh hell no! Rye, preferably Knob Creek or Old Overholt!
Being an increasingly cynical curmudgeon, I’ve gotta say…glad I’m out in three years. The uniform looks decent-on the right body type-but the Army (and the military in general) seems to be fixated on being more of a fashion show than a dedicated fighting force.
The black beret didn’t make everyone a “Warrior”; pinks and greens won’t bring back “The Greatest Generation”.
I’ve been considering submitting for separation more and more recently, which is irrational considering how close I am to retirement. Still, it’s hard to give a damn about an establishment that is so driven by image when so many more important things should take priority.
Thanks, but no. I’ve got far too many uniforms hanging in my closet…
Hang in there! don’t throw away a good retirement!! imho You can do 3 yrs standing on your head…..err…or somebodies head lol 😉
New uniforms every 5-10 years
Same rifle for 50+
The only way I would wear that is with a Sam Browne belt. Then I’d look like my dad used to look.
This is what we need to spend money on.
Its about how you look, not how you fight. Right?
Maybe the SGM of the Army needs to go?
After serving since 1986, they’re going to field this a year before I retire? Might have to either punch out a year early or stay in a couple more to get my money’s worth. hmmm, decisions.
On the upside posers will now have to re tool their wardrobe as well. Should be fun to see what they come up with.
Trying to remember who said, “The military with the prettiest uniforms loses.”
Was it Nixon who wanted to put the White House guards in spiked helmets?
I vaguely remember something like that, but it was quickly discarded.
January 1970 – Nixon debuted White House guard uniforms that made the guards look like movie ushers or hotel doormen. Fairly quickly the uniforms were deep-sixed and put into storage at some secret government warehouse in Nevada./smile
Funny thing is, 10 years later those uniforms came out of storage and were sold to a high school in Iowa, (for five bucks each) so their marching band could look all spiffy.
Yeh tricky dicky wanted to make sure “everyone got the point” 😉
What a crock of shit.
I still don’t understand what was wrong with the old dress greens. The Army Green uniform was the standard from 1956 through 2005 – 40 years. It was distinctive and reasonably comfortable.
The ASU, by contrast, is a hideous mishmash of colors that doesn’t look good on anyone, and they did away with the shoulder sleeve insignia (AKA shoulder patch) which was one of the best things about Army uniforms going all the way back to WW1. Even worse was the Class B version (no jacket) that makes soldiers look like shopping mall security guards.
Yes, the Pinks and Greens are an improvement over the ASU, but you know what would also have been an improvement? Just going back to the old dress greens (of which there are probably warehouses full somewhere.)
But to do that would be to admit that Big Army screwed up with the ASU fiasco, and they can’t have that.
The problem with these dress uniforms (besides the fact that real soldiers only wear them once a year, if that) is that the Army comes up with a decent looking design concept, but then they farm the actual production out to some cheap, cut-corners company that makes uniforms that just look like crap.
And worse, soldiers in basic training are rushed through uniform issue so they end up with poorly made, ill-fitted uniforms that look like hell. It gets to the point where if a soldier wants to look sharp for a board or some other event, they buy non-issue tailor made uniforms so they look decent.
I would be in favor of changing uniforms whenever it suits Big Army, with two stipulations: 1: All soldiers regardless of rank are issued a new uniform every other year with no out-of-pocket expense to them, and 2: All soldiers are allowed to have their uniforms tailored at Army expense once a year.
I would also favor eliminating the current clothing allowance, and instead, have units keep records of when soldiers are issued uniforms, and allow re-issues of clothing bag items (i.e. uniforms, boots, hats, etc) every other year. If a soldier requires an early reissue due to loss, carelessness or misuse, a statement of charges can be assessed (I think it’s called a FLIPL now) but if the need for reissue is because of deployments, field duty or other factors that are not the fault of the solder, reissue should be at no cost to the soldier.
Uniforms are just another piece of military equipment that the soldier needs to have in order to do his or her job and they should be issued just like military equipment.
Statements of charges are still called statements of charges. Sign it and your pay is docked. The FLIPL is an investigation of financial liability when nobody admits responsibility. It replaced the old Report of Survey.
One small caveat to the Statement of Charge vs. Report of Survey. Don’t know if this still applies, but during my time in the old days when I was a Supply Weenie, it did:
If the assessed liability would exceed the monthly base pay of the admitted guilty party, a Statement of Charge could not be initiated. It had to go to a Report of Survey to request proration of funds collection. The S/C was a one time, one month deal, much the same as a Cash Collection Voucher.
This is a kind of supply story from WWII.
My father was a Signal Corps officer going to school at Monmouth.
His story:
One recurring memory remains from those early cadet days at Monmouth when our study was of supply procedures and documents. It was a regulation by which equipment items damaged beyond repair or “found on post” or missing could be expunged from accountability. We could write ’em off.
On our final examination, we were asked the question, “On what official document do you record the gain or loss of carrier pigeons?” Understandably, carrier pigeons fly away and sometimes do not return. They live, have offspring and die. The correct answer, known to few, was the Over, Short and Damaged Report. The question and answer are memorable to me, even to this date, because words evoke images and the ones of pigeons over, short and damaged were indelible.
I thought it was called a menu!
Well at least Aggies will be able to wear their cadet uniforms……
And Aggies who branch Armor will already have pink riding breeches, Sam Brown belt and saber
