Sea Dragon

Off the coast of Flinders, Australia, swims a male weedy sea dragon. Like its relative the seahorse, the male sea dragon will care for the eggs laid on his tail by his female mate.

First, has anyone had any interactions with the Scottish American Military Society? Last weekend I was at a Highland Games and while talking with another individual, was offered a membership application. I am curious as to if it is worth the time and effort.

Second, I had forgotten just how awesome a 10 year old Single Malt Scotch is when slowly sipped near a bonfire.

Third, just when I thought that TDS has peaked, I saw the story about Judge Piro on the view, and it causes me to shake my head more and more.

Fourth, my third comment has me wanting another Scotch.

Currahee John

Used to be a member in the last century. Back then it was little more than a T-shirt and cap badge drinking society, from what I see these days, every one appears to be a Ranger, SEAL, SF, Marine Recon, or some combination thereof. Honestly not much to recommend it.

With a full afternoon of … basically nothing staring me in the face, and my desire to get to it full force, I present to you all here at TAH the latest installment of my weekly silliness. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it for you! DID YOU KNOW…? Who was the first U.S. president for whom women were able to legally vote? By Commissioner Wretched And the hottest part of the year has now taken hold here in the South. Thank heaven for the invention of air conditioning! Next week or so, we’ll come to what are known as the “Dog Days” of summer. That’s a period when it seems to be the hottest, and since it happens in late July and August, it’s a good bet that it’s either the heat or the humidity that makes you most uncomfortable. Dogs feel the Dog Days too, you know. But why are they called the “Dog Days,” anyway? The answer involves, of all things, the night sky. It seems that Sirius, the Dog Star (brightest star in the Canis Major, or Big Dog, constellation) is rising just before the Sun does, and somehow the ancient Greeks and Romans connected that with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. You know, things that we now take for granted. Yes, they felt that a star a bit more than 8 and a half light years away had something to do with our planet getting warmer. (Hey, it’s as good a reason as any, right?) The fact that Sirius is the brightest star in the sky (next to the Sun, of course) didn’t hurt its reputation, either. But Sirius has as much to do with temperature on Earth as it does with trivia. Once you know how far away it is, you can move on to other things … like the rest of the column. Or e-mailing me, if you’ve a mind to, at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com. I always answer. So let’s get “Sirius” about trivia! Did you know … … lobsters were once considered “poor… Read more »

Yef

Actually, if Sirius ligt measures anything close to 1 percentage then it would mean a 1% increase in visible light radiation which will be absorbed by the ground and be re-emitted as infrared (heat radiation) and potentially raise the temp by one tenth of a degree.

I received letter yesterday telling me the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program was ending 31DEC2018. The Russian and I do have the option of enrolling in FEDVIP, the Federal Employee Dental and Vision Insurance Program. Open season for enrollment in one of the many companies offering the plan(s) is NOV – DEC. Has anyone else received notification and, if so, does anyone have any insight into these programs?

stewburner

Received the notice but i don’t know anything about the FEDVIP plan. Its got to be cheaper than the ones out on the market, be worth looking into.

HMC Ret

I did a quick look-see and the cost for both the dental plus vision plans combined was less than what Delta Dental is currently charging.

Haywire Angel

I’ve had the FEDVIP for a couple of years now through my work, and I have nothing to complain about.

ME, MYSELF& I

I did quick check once I got around to it. In the dental plan list one of the providers is Delta Dental. One of the vision plans is VSP(Vision Service Plan). I have used both and was satisfied with both plans. VSP has a basic copay of $10.00 each for the exam, frames, and lenses. There are price ranges for frame and lenses which if exceeded will increase the copay rates. The prices hadn’t been available when I first looked.

I’m making chili today. I make the ‘best’ chili in town. I make large amounts, suitable for freezing. Chew on it for a week or so, repeat in a few weeks. Still haven’t been able to figure out how to make a decent cornbread. Mom and Grandma just threw stuff into a bowl, never measuring, and their cornbread was out of this world.
To commissary yesterday for a ‘few’ things. The total would have made a decent dent in the national debt. Found that I can buy frozen blueberries for less than the fresh ones cost. Consumer Reports and other ‘experts’ (Google it) say that frozen fruits and vegetables are as good as the fresh variety. We go through a lot of frozen fruits. I make sure the Russian has at least three smoothies per week. Blueberries, especially, are packed with antioxidants. Throw in a banana and occasionally another fruit and we’re good to go.
Hoping for a good, healthy weekend for my fellow miscreants. Ex-PH2 will be supplying sandwiches for all hands later in the afternoon.

Ex-PH2

I think that the frozen vegs are even better than fresh. I think they’r flash frozen, but not sure about that but they keep well and frozen green beans sauteed with white wine and a little bacon and some mushrooms and onion make a nice addition to any meal.

I’m disappointed that no one has yet flown into Oshkosh’s fly-in in a reproduction WACO CG-4A, or maybe a reproduction Horsa. That would be awesome.

Purple Heart Returned: Purple Hearts Reunited return medal to family, shed light on loved one’s service to America. We all have to be conservative with which projects we take on, and one of those worthwhile charities I dedicate my time to is Purple Hearts Reunited, started by Zach Fike, who is an Army major and Purple Heart recipient himself. If you take a moment to read his background and hear his story, you will see why he was nominated as Soldier of the Year by the Army Times. Purple Hearts Reunited is the only organization in the country returning lost or stolen medals to Veterans and military families at no cost. The non-profit organization spends a considerable amount of time researching and locating the original recipient of the medal or family and, when possible, conducts a “Return Ceremony” to reunite the Veteran or family with the medal. Fike’s passion to reunite lost medals of valor from our Veterans to their descendants will spark almost divine spiritual moments among these families and bring history and sacrifice to the forefront. In many cases, these families didn’t even know about grandpa’s brother who was killed fighting the Japanese or Germans and died at age 18. His history stopped that day when he paid the ultimate price for our country. Rediscovering medals from fallen Veterans brings their stories back to life. No person is truly gone as long as their memory is passed down and honored. Last week, we were able to return Pfc ”Pat” Pepe’s Purple Heart to his niece Donna Carpenter and nephew Mike Pepe. Pat was one of three children, with a younger brother Al and sister Rita. A replacement medal was acquired, and Purple Hearts Reunited framed and presented the award to the family. IMAGE: Donna Carpenter and Mike Pepe (brother) (Former Marine) Donna Carpenter and Mike Pepe Here are the details about Pepe’s service as provided by Fike to the family: “Pfc. Wilted Willy

HMC, it is my understanding that the Purple Heart medals are only engraved with the name of the deceased veteran? If you are awarded the Purple Heart for just a wound in combat, they are not engraved? Please let me know if I am correct in my assumptions? I would love to return the Purple Heart medal my pos brother has to the rightful owner if so engraved?
Thank you,
Willy

HMC Ret

Willie: Yeah, your brother is a piece of work. How he has pulled it off defies understanding. I believe you are correct re the Purple Heart. I realize now, after a re-read, that he opening paragraph in my posting might suggest I have an affiliation with the organization. I do not. That para was just part of the article. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
Willie, I don’t for the life of me understand how your brother can pull the stuff he does. Can’t you rat him out under the whistleblower’s program and be compensated for your efforts? Man, I thought my brother was a piece of work, but your brother takes the cake.
So, yes, wounds resulting in death have the Purple Heart engraved and not so if wounds do not result in death. I believe that to be the case.

Wilted Willy

Thanks HMC, I have ratted him to everybody and their brother, yes, I have even gone to the whistle blower sites and tried there as well. Nobody seems to give a shit?? I am almost ready to give up, but I still keep trying…………

If you didn’t see this, prepare yourself. You’ll either punch your monitor or just chuckle out loud. San Francisco has just extended voter registration to non-citizens, including illegal aliens. The limited purpose is for voting for school board members and the rationale is that parents, whether citizens or not, should have a say-so in their child’s education. So, this affects only parents of school-age children? No, but the child must be not yet 19. So, that leaves the parents of babies, toddlers, and small children able to register and vote, despite the fact that their little illegals are not in school. Of course, that rationale can easily work for extending the vote to other matters, such as city gov’t. (i.e., Shouldn’t Frisco residents have a say-so in their gov’t?) And so it begins. One small step for a city. One giant step for the destruction of a nation.

I gave her a brief rundown on the Sons of Liberty, and how the British provoked the French & Indian War by unofficially encouraging colonial settlers to encroach on the Ohio River Valley, then accused the colonists of starting it and jacked up their taxes to pay for it. I explained to her that the Gadsden rattlesnake and “Don’t Tread On Me” means that, just as we can’t break the law, the government can’t break the law against us either, or else we will do something about it that they REALLY won’t like. I also had to explain to her that because of that, bad people who want the government to break the law against us often try to lie about what it means, and say that those of us who display the Gadsden flag are racist, backward, anarchist, etc.

She now wants a Gadsden t-shirt to wear.

Per this Reuters article this morning, it appears that Rouhani is blustering about dTrump over the blustering remarks a few weeks ago about shutting down Iran’s oil exports.

His statement that Iran “has been the ‘guardian’ of the Strait of Hormuz throughout history” seems a bit farfetched to me, but if you’re gonna bluster, you gotta make it good, right?
You may recall that Jimmy Carter couldn’t figure out where that place was, either, when he was muddling and meddling and mostly destroying US foreign policy in the Middle East.

It’s almost like Iran wants a war.

And Khomeini stuck his oar into it, too. I thought his ‘sell or freeze by’ date had expired.

Read the same article early this morning as well. The whole “death to America” thing is getting pretty old and I would love to see this guy eaten alive by his own people.

There’s also an article about how there is a rising trend in the Left side of the political fence to crank up the liberalism rhetoric, loudly and vehemently.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/21/us/politics/democratic-party-midterms.html

Apparently, they are going to “energize it” so that they can somehow overwhelm the Muddles (that’s us) on the righthand side of the fence.

I think I can get some mileage out of this, because people in the UK want May out and Boris Johnson (conservative) in.

Want to piss away hours? Accidentally tune into Live PD on the A&E Channel! You’ll say oh that’s funny but got stuff to do….hours later you’re still watching. Mrs SJ wasn’t here to rein me in.

But I learned some things: (1) Good thing I’m not a LEO because lots of folks would be getting wood shampoos when they won’t STFU. (2) If I were a LEO I would simply arrest everyone not wearing a shirt…they are the ones up to shitbaggery.

AW1Ed

I DVR it for those nights I have trouble sleeping- good stuff.

When I turn it on, it is a train wreck I just can’t stop watching.

The mega class pathetic loser that we know as the Serial Poser Kyle Christopher Barwan, not an Army Ranger, not Army Special Forces, not an Officer, not British, not an Upright Citizen, gets his prison update status posted late Sundays, so it is Monday morning before I update, and here is this weeks news. It seems that he is still in the sweltering, mosquito infested, Gainesville FL area at the Gainesville Work Camp of the Florida State Prison, with a release date of December 2nd.
