Belleau Wood at the White House

| April 24, 2018

According to the Washington Examiner, French President Emmanuel Macron brought a sapling from Belleau Wood and the Presidents planted the tree on White House grounds. Belleau Wood is where the US Marines earned their nick name “Teufel Hunden” or Devil Dogs from their German opponents.

Marines have made what was left of the scorched wood Holy. Stories of heroism — like 1st Sgt. Daniel Day, who shouted “Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?” before plunging his attacking Marines into machine-gun cross fire — are part of the branch’s enduring mythology. The trees have grown back since and there is a memorial to them today.

It is well deserved. Years later, historian Alan Axelrod would rightly compare the small, outnumbered, and relatively inexperienced Marines at Belleau Wood “to the Spartans at Thermopylae.” Their battle didn’t turn the war. It did prevent a catastrophe…“100 years ago, American soldiers fought in France, in Belleau to defend our freedom,” Macron wrote in a statement. “This oak tree, my gift to President Trump, will be a reminder at the White House of these ties that bind us.”

Somehow, this will be some form of sinister plot….

Wait for it….

The mainstream mess media would be foaming and fawning over this if it was with President Trump’s predecessor.

Alberich

I read an AP story on the visit yesterday…sure enough, the reporter preferred to carp that Trump had no state visits from a foreign head of state in his first year as President, and said he was the first President in a hundred years to fail to do this…since there was no sign of any actual failure in the visit they were reporting on, they had to stretch that far to make it sound like a failure. The hate just shines through.

sj

e.g., Did the Agriculture Department inspect it?

French good at tree planting: they lined the roads in France with trees so the invading German soldiers didn’t have to march in the sun.

SFC D

Someone will complain about Melania’s shoes.

David

Or that
Macron is carrying instructions from Putin.

A Proud Infidel®™️

How many libtard moonbats does it take to change a light bulb?

ZERO, they’d rather sit in the dark while they bitch, piss and moan about President Trump.

Bill M

i so wish we had a like button for this comment. Well done API.

Roh-Dog

The French government smuggles trees, ours smuggled guns.
Pussies.

Roh-Dog

Didn’t they already give us a giant green lady? France, you’re a good friend but we’re not looking for a serious relationship right now.

That tree is an undocumented immigrant, stealing not only prime Washington, D.C. real estate but precious carbon dioxide from American trees!

Prior Service

Nice. I’ve had the honor of visiting the American cemetery near Belleau Wood. Like all the others it is a stirring testimony to what America has done, and continues to do, for others across the world.

The friendship between the US and France is now really branching out with their gift.

AW1Ed

Looks kinda like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree right now, but White Oaks can live around 300 years. Nice gesture from France, IMO.

Martinjmpr

Great tribute from a country that has been an ally since the infancy of our nation.

Daniel Day? D-Day from Animal House? Dan DALY, dammit.

SFC D

Daniel Simpson Day. Whereabouts unknown

radar

“Daniel Simpson Day…..has no grade point average. All course incomplete.”

AZtoVA

I sent the ‘author’ an email. I’m sure I can’t be the only one, but it is still incorrect.

Some guy in a gyrocopter will fly into it.

IDC-SARC is indisposed for a little while.

I’d post a witty comment here but my hands are tied up, maybe if I just slap the keyboard with something…..

“Get away sticks”, well now, I’m glad I got outta bed this morning, I just learned something new. THANKS JONN.

Perry Gaskill

Just your basic photo op with legs up to here, Jonn.

Personally, I always wear a necktie while gardening. Tractor Supply makes them with little crossed shovels and tiny rabbits. They’re a guaranteed babe magnet…

SFC D

Just don’t wear it around the wood chipper.

Perry Gaskill

For that you need the bow tie version.

It’s also handy for those poignant times when you need to channel your inner Pee Wee Herman…

SFC D

So other than Abraham Lincoln, who else got shot in the back of the head in a theater?

3E9

Nice gesture. I’m sure somehow the environment has now been ruined because they probably didn’t have a digging permit. Or it disturbed the habitat of a protected species.

OWB

The formerly protected DC politico swamp flea is slowly but surely becoming extinct. It is a noxious little thing closely tied to the equally invasive and difficult to quell MD crested vampire bat and the NoVA blotchy mole.

George V

We make a lot of jokes at the expense of the French, but the French remember.
This is a good gesture, and since my great-uncle was a soldier who fought in France in WWI, I will say “Thank You” to the French.

Alberich

I would love it if they’d revive that same spirit of defending their homeland–They shall not pass! And then export it back to us.

Casey

It got burned out in 1914 & 1915, when the French suffered half of all war losses (~650,000 out of 1,500,000).

Losses were:
1914 301,000
1915 349,000
1916 252,000
1917 164,000
1918 235,000.

It is easy to track the discouragement of the Allies from their casualty lists. It should come as no surprise that the French armies mutinied early in 1917. Soldiers expect more from their leaders than sending them to useless deaths, and the front hadn’t budged more than a mile or two in either direction since the end of 1914.

At the time France had a population of ~40 million. 1.5 million casualties gives us 3.75%. To put this in perspective, we have ~325 million in the US, and the equivalent fraction gives us 12 million casualties.

France never really recovered from that trauma. In fact I consider it surprising that she fought as well as she did in WW2. After that Vietnam and Algeria introduced a strong reaction against military operations, although France can still field excellent troops.

We still, I think, have that spirit here, but mostly amongst the “deplorables.”

OWB

Thank you, President Macron.

2/17 Air Cav

This story cost ne a couple of hours reading (again) on Belleau Wood. For that I am most grateful.

The Other Whitey

That’s cool! The Dan Daly Tree.

They could also call it the Pershing Tree, but Daly seems a more appropriate namesake for a Belleau Wood oak.

borderbill (a NIMBY/BANANA)

Merci Monsieur Le President Macron. There are some smart ass remarks above- we’re Americans and that’s what we do. Thank you.

Devtun

Nice of Pres Macron to bring his hot mom over…

Maybe this improved relationship continues to get better w/ our oldest “ally”.
After de Gaulle, Mitterrand, and Chirac, I guess things can’t possibly get any worse.

The Other Whitey

Imagine how much better things might have gone had they just shot De Gaulle and put LeClerc in charge…

Mason

There really is no better name than Dan Daly. One of only two Marines to receive two medals of honor for two separate events. Oh yeah, and a Navy Cross and a DSC.

Wonderful gesture by the French, if for no other reason than it pisses off some liberal slugs.

Cher (yes, she is still around) recently said President Trump was a cancer on American society, or words to that affect. Nice thing to say about someone. Having dealt with literally hundreds of patients dying of cancer, I can only assume she has no insight into the terrible disease.

UpNorth

You could have stopped at “She has no insight” and been perfectly correct.

A Proud Infidel®™️

Cher, isn’t she yet another moonbat libtard that promised to leave the USA when President Trump got elected?

FatCircles0311

I’m sure the second a Libtard gets in they’ll dig it up. Mark my words.

Fate of ex-USS Belleau Wood LHA-3:

Sea story. Did a six month deployment on this ship early 1981. Recall the XO had a definite first and last name of French lineage. Picked up Vietnamese boat people out of South China Sea during this time. They were brought in via the well deck. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier group of people in this life. Many of the Marines assigned to the BLT called the ship Devil Dog. As they should, those amphibs, though assigned to USN, really belong to the Marines.
