Our partners at Military Phonies share their work on the fellow, Richard Pence, who claims that he went through BUD/S training, but he got in an accident the next day, so he never went to the teams;
However, the Navy doesn’t remember Richard going through BUD/S or his accident;
During the time he claimed to be in SEAL training he was stationed aboard the USS Trippe, FF 1075. There is no record of him being stationed in Coronado or even on the west coast. Richard Pence was never a Navy SEAL.

It wasn’t Shipley, it was the SEALs at Military Phonies.
Much admiration for Shipley and all the fine work that he does, but there are other efforts out there to expose fake SEALs.
It looks to me that he was really in the NAVY RESERVES. Some of the entries on his list of assignments are for active duty for training and then followed by a drill pay entry.

Ex; Yes that’s a Machinest’s Mate patch or a Monkey’s Mate as some of the non Snipes use to call us. Point of interest is that at one time, the Machinest Mate Auxilliary propeller did not have a hole in the middle as the Machinest Mate engine room snipes had the hole in the middle which denoted the shaft hole. I was in A Gang. My 1960 Bluejackets manual just has the one with the hole so somewhere along the line, the solid prop was not made anymore.

Having had leisure to look at the photos and read through the screenshots of his conversation, I have realized that Richard Allen Pence has lied to his own sons about being a SEAL.

Soooo. . . what would make someone claim to be something that is so easily disproven? It’s like claiming to be a Medal of Honor recipient. It’s just never made sense to me.
Are there a great number of people who get away with it and people outed here and elsewhere are a minority? Seems like it would be harder and harder in this day and age of cell phone pictures and internet searches.
Because most people don’t have the time (or even the inclination) to check.
We only see these phonies when they get busted. In most cases, they’ve been rocking the lie for YEARS.
What about phony POWs? There are thousands of them and yet, that’s one of the easiest things to check on the internet.
However there’s another aspect that I think has to be taken into consideration: Many (if not most) of the guys who make these outrageous and inflated claims are big talking blowhards. Even if they don’t get “called out” until they’re posted on a board like TAH or Military Phonies, many of them probably have a local reputation of being big talking phonies, even if people don’t neccessarily do the homework and verify their lies.
What I’m saying is that just because a faker has been claiming to be a Green Beret/Seal/Sniper/Ranger/Recon/Space Shuttle Door Gunner for the last 10 years, don’t necessarily assume that most of his acquaintances actually believe it.

Even if you had gone through BUD/S; they don’t just give you the Trident at graduation. Back in the day you would go through additional training in the Teams, and then your Team would award you your Trident. Now they do it differently, I don’t know all the specifics, because I was never a SEAL, just as you were never a SEAL.
So why are you wearing that mini-Trident on your uniform? Why are you claiming to ever having been through BUD/S?

One, I could never, ever, try to pull some phony, fake, embellishing s**t like all these a**wipes because of something instilled in me by my folks, and further emphasized by the Marine Corps, integrity. Two, just the thought of being outed and having to face my folks, my wife, my kids, is too much to even contemplate. I shudder just thinking what it would be like.
Problem is these sonovabitches take down their Facebook page almost immediately so we cannot track them back to their community, employment or VFW/AL membership. Would be nice of that info can be posted so we can birddog them.
Brings up an interesting ethical question… and perhaps a policy or agreed upon standard for the Stolen Valor community.
Some would not advocate that someone lose their job over military embellishment UNLESS there is a direct connection with leveraging said embellishment for positional or financial gain at their place of employment. So, if they work at a car dealership and brag on their off-time, should their employer know or is that considered crossing the line into harassment? Just asking the question.
Membership in fraternal veteran orgs is another matter because they are gaining something of value — be it prestige, or elected office — so I think this is fair game.
So, again, what is the collective thinking and policy for someone’s place of employment? Thoughts?
My opinion Daisy is in that example the dealership has nothing to do with that guy’s claims and I wouldn’t tell them. I wouldn’t want anyone’s family to suffer for a shitbag’s poor choices like that. Any place the person works at or is associated with because of his false claims should know. Just my 2 cents worth.
The ethical question as it relates to an employer would be, “Di I want a liar working for me, someone who misrepresents himself by taking as his own what others have earned?” The material or tangible benefit aspect is a legal requirement and ethical behavior and legal behavior are not the same things.
