Alex Nichols: The absurd conservative obsession with “stolen valor”
Some doofus named Alex Nichols decided to take on the stolen valor community and the entire notion of stolen valor in his column last week entitled “The absurd conservative obsession with “stolen valor”“.
Somehow, he claims that the Stolen Valor community is strictly a conservative construct. You know, despite the fact that Doug Sterner and his wife, Pamela, who wrote the Stolen Valor Act, Colorado Congressman John Salazar, who introduced the Act in Congress and President Barack Obama, who signed the Stolen Valor Act of 2013 into law, are not Conservatives or Republicans.
Nichols also makes the absurd contention that “The Wedding Crashers” influenced the Stolen Valor Act passage – Ms. Sterner had been working on the subject long before the movie came out – ten years after BG Burkett’s book was published.
For some reason, Nichols doesn’t bother to look at the true giant of stolen valor websites, that being TAH with 240 new valor thieves listed in 2017, instead he wants to talk about the YouTube videos of bullies confronting homeless people wearing thrift-store clothing and Guardian of Valor which has had only a handful of stolen valor busts this year – although they sell their own brand of coffee and have their logo on a NASCAR vehicle.
This Ain’t Hell has prided itself on busting valor thieves irrespective of their political persuasions. Most of our thieves this year display pro-Trump memes on their Facebook pages. We stopped one valor stealing speaker from addressing the RNC a year ago last summer. The Washington Post and New York Times loved our exposures of the phonies at the Malheur Stolen Valor Convention.
Although we are conservative, mostly, when we discuss political issues, that has never leaked into the stolen valor aspect of our news. Maybe that’s why Nichols didn’t bother to name us or talk to us before he posted his stupid, uneducated opinion. Our stolen valor creds go back eleven years, longer than any other existing website today. But we don’t sell coffee, and that’s my failing.
The internet provided a perfect medium for the public shaming of valor thieves. 2011 saw the transformation of Stolenvalor.com, originally a single-page advertisement for Burkett’s book, into a hub for self-appointed private investigators. The revamped website featured an “investigative team” of pissed-off-looking retired soldiers and a section for “secured targets” — meaning valor thieves (by now, several dozen) caught in the act. Through crowdsourced tips and military records requests, stolen valor detectives engage in a rather heavy-handed simulation of military life.
Yeah, TAH features over a thousand “secured targets” – many of whom are currently occupying a jail cell for their fraud, and many more are awaiting their moment of justice. Their crimes separated well-intentioned Americans (and others) from their hard-earned money. One is doing 20 years in a Florida prison for raping an underage girl using his military lies to meet her, there’s another perv occupying a New Jersey cell for the same crime. If that’s the kind of people who are targeted by us “vigilantes”, do you really want to shit on us, Al?

I actually went over to that site and read the article. It is one of the strangest and most illogical things I have ever read.
It almost appears that the author believes that anyone who partakes in stolen valor is either homeless, mentally ill, or not harming anyone. Yet on this site we have seen people making money, using stolen valor to get “donations” or using faked or enhanced service to get elected.
He does make a decent point on the compilation videos of stolen valor people being confronted, be misses the idea that 1) we don’t know when the conversations started only when the camera starts rolling and 2) most of the videos are edited to fit into time frames for YouTube. In addition, some / most / all of the “compilation videos” are made by people who don’t really care about stolen valor, but only the monetization of the video for them. Contrast those videos with Don Shipley’s videos which lay a foundation for the discussion and then “confronts” the person.
The bottom line seems to be that in his hatred for conservatives, Nichols supports liars and thieves.
To me, that says more about him than anything.
As highlighted here, some of them have actually used their valor thievery to lead phony charitable organizations and use the money raised as their personal piggy bank, in addition to those who have committed more serious felonies.

It happens that our military traits of focusing on the facts, deliberating based on these facts, and taking action based on the deliberation and planning, tends to make us conservative.
Alex Nichols shows that he knows very little about what he’s writing about. He, as a “writer”, should know that a good writer does an extensive research about the topic about to be written about before writing about the topic.
He’s writing based on his misguided stereotype of who the conservatives are. We don’t go after fakers and embellishers because of “anger” or to be “badge protectors”. We, as conservatives, believe that we should be proud of what we’ve done, and that we should work on better outcomes in cases where we fall short.
We, as veterans, know that, and approach stolen valor partly with the understanding that other veterans should know not to embellish. As Americans, we frown on deception and the things associated with deception.
Alex Nichols cherry picked organizations and groups to add false validity to his claim. The rest of us see it for what it is. An emotional, childish, rant against a group of people that disagree with his own philosophy.
Alex Nichols displays the classic symptoms of TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome).
Someone who loves Alex Nichols needs to intervene quickly and get Alex Nichols to professional psychiatric care.
TDS allows the current POTUS to live rent-free in the sufferer’s head. Irrational outbursts, illogical screeds, and alarmist conspiracy theories concerning Conservatives or Nazis are among the signs and symptoms of TDS. Anyone displaying such symptoms should be isolated until professional psychological intervention can be implemented.
IMHO Alex Nichols displays clear signs of having Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder (TARD) which he lets run his life thus making him a Trump Acceptance Resistance Disorder Operative (TARDO).
We lean to the side that tends to fuck us the least, thus far that hasn’t been the Democratic side.
More importantly though we are a diverse group of people with a variety of beliefs regarding every topic. While this site tends conservative we have several conversations where a variety of well articulated non-conservative viewpoints are expressed. Not necessarily to friendly reception but articulated nonetheless.
I’m a heathen, libertarian leaning, curmudgeonly asshole at times. This is one of the few places I can trade my thoughts and ideas with people who aren’t going to get all butt-hurt because I have a different outlook on these things than a majority here and they often remind me of some alternatives that I might not have considered.
