Sharior Rahman, Air Force chaplain shoplifter
Stars & Stripes reports that Air Force Captain (Chaplain) Sharior Rahman, an imam at Ramstein Air Base and one of only a few Muslim clerics in the Air Force, was convicted of stealing from a German store and sentenced to forfeit $3,000 of his pay for one month but did not dismiss him from the service.
Whether Rahman will remain in the chaplaincy with a general court-martial conviction still needs to be determined by the organization that endorsed him as a military chaplain, officials said.
The charges stem from a shopping trip last year at an Edeka store in Homburg, where Rahman and his wife, Sanam, a civilian, shoplifted about 70 euros worth of groceries, according to court testimony. A second shoplifting involving the couple occurred two weeks later at the Exchange on Ramstein, though no criminal charges were filed in the latter incident.
According to the article, he and his wife had a well-rehearsed plan to buy some items and smuggle other stolen items out of the stores. If he had tried that in Saudi Arabia, he’s be missing one of his sticky mitts now.

A prior-enlisted Captain, maxed out for base pay (over 18 yeasr of service) is $7,026.00 per month. Add in about $250 or so tax-free BAS per month and whatever the OHA is if he’s off base.

Any court martial conviction is conduct unbecoming. What gets me is that now, lacking dismissal, this officer will, by law, be granted an honorable discharge. There are only two types of discharge for officers, honorable or dismissal.

His career is basically over. I’m sure this won’t be last we hear of him with the light sentence. When I was a CQ runner in Germany on a weekend there always seemed to be someone caught shoplifting. Definitely not something that led to being kicked out of AD.

Talk about someone who should be held to a higher standard – and, accordingly, hammered harder if judged and found wanting.
Between this and the Bergdahl case (and a number of others recently), I’m really thinking that perhaps it’s time for some major changes to the military justice system. Maybe it’s time to go to a two-person panel to preside over courts-martial – one of which is a officer or NCO senior to the accused who is not a military judge. And both must agree on any sentence.
As one or more of our military JAG officer commenters has noted, one of the primary purposes of the military justice system is to promote and support military discipline. Many military judges seem to have forgotten that.
Arguably, the maintenance of good order and discipline is the -only- purpose.
And if not the only one, then it is absolutely the first and foremost.

He had to steal. How else could he afford to live on a base pay of $7,026 a month as an 0-3 with 18 years prior enlisted service. That is only $84,312 a year without rations allowance. Can some compassionate individual set up a gofundme account?
I’m sure they live in government quarters, which are probably inadequate to their needs and desires. They are only a couple steps from creating cardboard signs and both he and his wife occupying a couple street corners.

Was at Ft Sam for the Medical NCO course back in the 80s. One of the cadre there told us a story of a General Officer (not sure if he was a physician or MSC branch) anyway the General’s wife had sticky fingers and apparently help him (the General) to achieve an early retirement.

If the USAF’s regs are anything like the Army’s, the USAF can correct this w/o SECDEF involvement. One of the GOs in his chain-of-command should be able to ask AFHQ to convene a “show cause” administrative board to consider his suitability for continuation on active duty.

Back in the late 90’s I had a kid in my 81’s Platoon who had sticky fingers. He was bought up in foster care and I guess he figured since he had nothing growing up he could steal to make up for it. They caught him in the PX trying to walk out wearing 4 jackets/sweatshirts he didn’t pay for with CDs in the pockets. It turns out he’d been lifting shit from the platoon as well. After a SCM and a few months in the brig he got a BCD.
Fast forward to 2011 and he sends me a friend request on face book. I’m a bit hesitant but accept and see how he is doing. He has a family and is a union steel worker and doing well. He posts up stuff about how he served in the Corps but doesn’t go over the top. One guy that was in the platoon put him on blast a few years back and called him a thieving piece of shit he won’t ever forgive.

This past summer when there was the big flood down in Texas he and a few other vets loaded up their trucks and went down and helped out for a week or so.
This past November he messaged me and asked me if it was OK if he put up his Boot Camp graduation photo on his Facebook Profile Picture.
I told him that even though he had gotten the boot he still had earned the title Marine, and all he had done since he had gotten out, Being a hard worker, A good Husband and a Great Dad to his kids was an example that reflected what a Good Marine would do, and I was proud of the good man that stupid kid had turned out to be, and he would always be a Marine in my book, as long as he didn’t bullshit about his service.
He said he has been living with the guilt of that BCD for 20 years.

Growing up as he did, it is entirely conceivable that no one ever taught him the limits of acceptable behavior. Until the Corps.
