Last week we talked about Mike Jolly the martial arts instructor who used to brag that he was a Marine. We heard that he had also been in the Air Force, but he had walked away from the job. Well, it turns out that’s true. He walked away from the Air Force just three days after 9-11-2001;
At least he’d finished basic training in the Air Force, but three days after 9-11. I’m sure it was just a coincidence.

Funny, in his apology on the other thread he left out his 4 months in the Air Force.
Hmm. Left the USAF as an E1 after 6+months of active duty, plus no mention of any prior service on his USMC DD214.
I’m guessing the man didn’t exactly depart the USAF on good terms – and also didn’t mention that fact to the USMC when he signed up with them in 2006. But I could be wrong about those guesses.
Addendum: might not be an ELS, either. Counting the days between 14 Mar and 14 Sep 2001 (inclusive), I get 186. I believe that an ELS has to occur during the first 180 days of active duty service.
If they get the ball rolling on ELS prior to 180 days and the actual boot doesn’t happen until 186, couldn’t he still be ELS?
I don’t believe so as his AF paper work shows his Docs were forwarded to the
VA that usually a Sign he completed his 180 service for benefits
The lack of ribbons could be because someone dropped the ball or he pissed off who ever issued his 214

I never got sentenced to a tour of recruiting duty, Skippy – so I’ll ask: what happens if someone simply “neglects” to mention past service with another branch? Does that routinely get caught, or do they sometimes slip through for a while?
I’m thinking that the guy might have gotten a General/Under Honorable Conditions release from the USAF for some reason and simply not mentioned that prior service when he enlisted in the USMC. The USMC obviously didn’t know about it, because they list zero prior active service on his USMC DD214 (he served 6+ mo in the USAF several years earlier).
I believe 180 days is the breakpoint after which an ELS is no longer an option. After that, I think another form of administrative discharge must be used. But I can’t say with certainty that what you propose is impossible, either.

My year being trapped in recruiting I only saw one done and it was because
The background was not done properly and it was caught at MEPS

I was in Recruiting from 07-10.
He wouldn’t have been able to “hide” prior service
As soon as his SSN was typed into the system his previous enlistment would have popped up
We all use the same enlistment processing system. Hence MEPS
And not AREPS, or AFEPS or NAVEPS or MCEPS
Oh and btw. As of Monday I’m now a proud US Army civilian employee of MEPS (Test Administrator)

Looking at the DD214, he apparently was eliminated from the initial enlisted aircrew course at Sheppherd. He had signed on to be a tanker (KC-135/KC-10) boom operator but never made it to Altus where the skill specific training occurs.
I believe that other than the altitude chamber the rest of the curriculum at that course only required the student to recognize the pointy end of the airplane three times out of four.

Even if he washed out, enlistment contracts almost always have a caveat that if one fails a “guaranteed” school, they can be (and are) reassigned based on the needs of the service.
So the fact he got the boot sure is telling.
I knew several guys that happened to. Since the school was after Jump School guess where they ended up with a couple just up the street from me at Bragg
Six weeks of Basic would take him to the end of April with a mid-May Initial tech school (4 months) which would be mid Sept. I suspect if you bilge out of the course early enough the ensuing faculty board might have been pre 9/11 with a departure on 9/14.

Actually it’s a living document. I am only the curator. API, I ate in the Officers’s Mess at Little Creek, VA several times when I was doing the Marine Corps Amphib Recon course. Boy do those Navy Officers eat high on the hog. And they did have crab one evening. But I never ate in an AF mess hall.
