Iron Grid
Outside of Katowice, in southwest Poland, Your Shot photographer Mariusz Pietranek used a drone to capture an aerial shot of sedimentation tanks at an ironworks.
Just a reminder that July is the month that we pay rent for our place on the internet for the next year, so any spare change you can send our way would be appreciated.

Glad to hear we’re investing my taxes into your F5ing – you’re welcome!
I was on Chow, I also pay taxes…and bite me.
Sorry, my comment came off wrong – wasn’t trying to be accusatory, just ribbing…how you spend your lunch (or your work hours, for that matter) is between you and your supervisor. I obviously have failed to master the fine art of the friendly jibe via text only – apologies…
I was just ribbing ya back…teamroom atmosphere and all that. No offense was taken.
I’m posting now cuz..um…I’m on second breakfast…yeah, that’s the ticket, second breakfast. It’s mandatory..or something.
I’m in the private sector, so I’m posting because I need to do something to tide me over to my three-martini lunch…
Cheers!
Third?
Fifth! Why yes I will take a fifth. Scotch or Bourbon if you please. If not, Rum will do.

21…maybe
Hey,
Anyone hear anything about this, but I see my dentist under the Veterans Choice program. He is also a Veteran and he told me his contacts at the VA have told him that the program has been cancelled. That all patients after current approved treatments have to return to VA only care. I’m wondering if anyone else had heard this or if maybe it was just a local thing. I travel a lot but I use VA Battle Creek as my home VA base.
I was told by the dental offices at Atlanta, Charleston and Jacksonville that the Choice option did not exist. Also, lead times for appointments in those VA Dental Clinic were 4 to six months out. So between VA or Dental Dental (TRDP) – I’m paying to get my jaw fixed.
Good luck with the VA.
I meant to add that I’m 100% SC so the VA dental would be cost free to me. I don’t have the time to wait, or desire to mess with the VA. So while it sucks to pay for treatment, it beats the other option, in my opinion. Besides, I have no idea about the quality of VA care at any of these clinics.
No, I haven’t, I have a couple more appointments thru Choice with a podiatrist, will see what happens?
And then there is this news……beaver attacks!!
Feel free to run with this one guys, I know you won’t disappoint. 😉
Have a great & safe weekend all.
My favorite packie in CO is Beaver Liquors
Down the road from my a bit is Beaver Dam.
Alongside the dam is the “Beaver Cleaners”.
Their business motto is…”Best cleaners by a dam site”.
“Liquor and More” in the Boston area.
I kid you not.
Right before you go over the Bourne bridge to the Cape, wasn’t it?
Dunno. I just listen to the ads on the Howie Carr show. If they had a vehicle inspection station it could be “Liquor and Sticker”
A number of years ago I was heading down the columbia river gorge a a car passed me with a beautiful young lady in a pair of daisy dukes. Feet up on the dash on either side of the steering wheel. She had a Oregon Beavers sticker on the car and a license plate that said “2 wet”
both my 90 lb lab, GSD & Mastiff dogs were beaten to hell by a Beaver last year. the Black dog got 112 stitches and then brown one got 72 stitches and staples. am still paying the vet off for that damn beaver. but when has a man not had to pay for a beaver in one way or the other?
Man ALWAYS pays for Beaver in one form or another!
CRAP !!!!
Proxy provisional FIRST!!!
Animal, check your FB messages. Got a question for you.
Since I can’t be first, I’m taking my keyboard and going back to my Terrorologist’ lair!
Ace of Spades has an excellent article on the “Motte and Bailey” argument strategy. Great stuff.
Happy Weekend to all, especially to EX! You always make me hungry with your menu items. So when are you coming to Florida to make lunch?
EX-PH2, if you have your ears on…… I’d like to get some information/ideas/layouts from you, if I could, on how to put my Dad’s WWII diaries into book form. I never knew they even existed until about eight years or so ago when my Mom passed. I found them in a box along with some of his other military paperwork. Briefly, these diaries are three in number, measuring 4″ X 6″, number approx. twenty pages each, written in cursive on both sides, titled “Combat Diary No. 1, 2 & 3” and detail daily occurrences that happened to him & his unit (A Co., 86th Chemical Mortar Bn.) during the war. The first entry is dated April 27, 1944 when his unit first reached England by ship and the last entry dated July 11, 1945 at Camp Kilmore, NJ. The cursive is hard as hell to read and transcribe, but I feel the need to do this not only for my Dad but also for the other WWII vets to get more of their stories out. A typical entry: “Mon. Oct. 23rd (1944) Fire many rounds of HE – weather rainy – on guard for four hrs. Jerries fire heavy shells – some prisoners go by us, again – 328th Inf. Reg. A Company has 52 casualties and suffer many more in other Companies” Any help, direction, leads that you could give me EX-PH2, would be greatly appreciated. I can be contacted thru my e-mail address if you are interested, which Jonn has, and I give my permission to release to you. Sorry about being long windy folks, but this is something that I feel the need to accomplish. If any others out there in “TAH-land” have suggestions or ideas, they would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been kicking this can down the road for awhile, but at 69 years of age, I’m beginning to realize that that road is shortening up every day & not getting any longer (just being a realist). After completing this project, I plan on donating the diaries to my State Vet Museum. Thanks, Skyjumper P.S. –… Read more »
Yes, I think you can do this, taking your time to copy one entry at a time. Use a magnifying glass. Copy the entries exactly as they are, and then go back later to fill in the blanks, e.g., ‘fire many rounds of HE’ – I’m not sure what ‘HE’ is but someone, somewhere will know.
Put a double space between entries to keep them separated. Most of all, take your time.
Dates are important, as are photos if you have any. There is a good lot of archived WWII photography online now. There are also WWII vets’ groups such as the 82nd Airborne that may have information which will fill in the gaps.
HE is high explosive. Let me know if you need any help with anything else?
Thanks for getting back to me, Ex-PH2.
I was thinking of getting some public domain pictures of battle maps to use for time frame info according to his diary entries. Also, I have a small number of photos taken of him and some of his mortar crew buddies in France, Belgium & Germany.
I also have info bookmarked on the history of the 86th Chemical Mortar Bn.
Yeah, it has been tedious transcribing the cursive entries. I have been using the magnifying glass as you have suggested. Similar to staring into a computer screen for awhile, a person has to back away for a bit and go about normal daily things before going back to it.
I have found a number of sources of WWII diaries such as “The World War II Diary of
C. J. Barnes”, “Traveling Through W.W. II: 2 years-2 months-29 days”, and someplace hidden right now from me is a link concerning a soldier named “Art” and his diary.
The main issue is that their diaries have flowing daily stories, whereas my Dad’s are more daily “a few word comments”. I didn’t want to take anything away by changing his entries to flow more, so I have decided to just put his entries down as I read them.
Also, the 86th Chemical Bn. was sort of a”bastard” unit, meaning they were always attached to another unit. I believe I found upwards of 20-26 units such as the 82nd Airborne, 4th Div, 79th Div., etc..
It is definitely going to be a time consuming project, but one well worth doing for more than a few reasons.
Thanks for you input Ex-PH2, it is greatly appreciated.
Skyjumper
By the way: “HE” stands for “High Explosive”
That actually sounds like a cool project.
Once you transcribe the diaries, you can go the “self publishing” or “indie publishing” route. (Google “indie publish single book” for places that will do it.)
Most require PDF formatting, but that is not a big deal.
Whatever you do, get someone to do a cover illustration. Don’t just print words on the cover. Covers are advertisements for the book. Unless you are printing a leather bound book, get someone to do something that looks professional for you.
(And yes, I will volunteer my services for that. I just did a cover for another vet.)
It’s not as hard to get the work published as you think. The actual work is in the transcribing, the formatting and the cover.
(As a side note, if you want to use illustrations of your dad or whatever, and you only have poor pictures with cracks or places where the image has faded, spotted etc, get ’em scanned and send them my way too. (higher resolution is better!) I’ll fix them up for you as well.)
Let me know if I can be of assistance.
gitarcarver, thanks for your offers of help, I greatly appreciate it and just may take you up on that down the road.
As far as self publishing goes, it has been a consideration. I’m just not sure of exactly how far I won’t to go with this project. I just wanted to get this “old, short guy’s” [ducking and running for cover hoping my Dad isn’t looking from above reading this comment ;)] WWII time out there so that it is not lost in time.
I had a face to face discussion with my states Veteran Museum directer a while back, and he stated that not many of these diaries exist.
I admired & respected my Dad for what he did and how he lived his life and raised my brother & me. Maybe at the time I didn’t, but as I got older, suddenly he didn’t seem so “old fashioned & dumb”. Guess every younger generation goes through that phase.
Thanks again.
WANT = won’t
Note to self: engage brain BEFORE using fat fingers. (grin)
Another phase you and the museum curator might want to consider down the road, after all of the transcribing has been completed, is to coat the pages with parylene. Mainly for military, space and medical applications, it has also been used for old papers and artwork preservation.
Skyjumper,
No problem. I can usually be found here making a nuisance of myself. Click on my name, go to the website and contact the guy there. He’ll forward your email to me and we can go from there.
You can get single books printed for less than $20 (for 200 pages.) Shipping is kind of expensive, but there are options there as well.
Like I said, it sounds like a cool project and if I can help on the graphic end, I will.
If you’re going to self-publish, go through Amazon’s Create Space. It costs ZERO to upload your material, and make it available in print and on Kindle.
Do NOT go through ANY of those vanity publishers. They are nothing but ripoffs, period. Amaozn’s Create Space is cost-free to you, and is print-on-demand, meaning you can order as many copies at the cost of printing them (usually less than $5.00) or give people the link to order print or Kindle copies.
DO NOT GO THROUGH ANY OF THE VANITY PUBLISHERS. GO TO AMAZON’S CREATE SPACE.
While there are pitfalls of vanity publishers, not all self publishing companies are bad.
Create Space has many detractors. While some of its basic services are free, most of the higher level services are not and cost more than other self publishers.
Several of my clients will never work with Create Space again after they paid money and got horrible services.
In many ways, the self publishing industry is like all industries. There are ripoffs, and there are good and bad experiences with companies.
If CreateSpace works for you, that’s fine. But to say that all other self publishing companies are “ripoffs’ is misleading.
You are also going to need to scan those entries into your computer or have someone do it for you. That could take away the magnifying glass syndrome as you can blow it up to any size you want through any of the free available photo processing software platforms.
The work you are doing is important as too many of those men have passed now and their stories are lost forever.
if you can cross reference his location at any time it will give you some historical reference points for any readers that might happen to read it.
I’m currently reading “Eisenhower, the War Years, 1943-1945” and it is fascinating. It’s 800+ pages long but I’m well into the book by half now and it gets better and better the farther I get into it.
So the historical reference points will give you more background as to what he went through as well as his unit.
It will turn out to be quite the research project, but the more you put into it, the better it will turn out.
Let me know if you need any help, I’ll help out if I can and keep up the great work.
Thanks for posting it here, now it gives me something else to look forward to !!!
Amen, get ALL the stories out there now while a few WWII types are still around so we can thank them! My Uncle was a Seabee in the pacific during the war, he told me things but I didn’t record anything or write anything down, now I have CRS disease, makes me mad and sad at the same time,,,those seabees worked their asses off, ships come in all blown to hell, the seabees would work all nite, patch them up and out they go the next morning!!
Cool article in the latest “American Rifleman” in which the writer mentioned meeting a local WWII vet author, and besides having him sign his self-published book, the writer had the vet sign his DCM-acquired M1.
Since then he has met, and had many other WWII vets sign the rifle which is now covered with signatures. One description caught my eye “Paul who piloted the Enola Gay” – obviously his rifle is signed by Paul Tibbets!
I haven’t checked into it, but apparently my FB account has been suspended for violating the TOS. I only really use it to post facts about SV…dunno if it had anything to do with the recent exchanges. Anybody else that commented recently had any suspension?
Did you perhaps post to a poser’s FB wall? It may be that someone complained to FB. FB doesn’t bother to investigate the validity of the complaints–they just put you in FB “jail”.
Of course I did, lol…as did many others. I generally stick to facts and only occasionally use profanity, but I try not to unless the poser does first. In the recent exchange I was not as aggressive with my comments as many others.
Maybe it was all of those “I’d hit it!!” comments on your FB page, IDC SARC. (grin)
Doesn’t matter whether you were aggressive or not–poser whines to FB, and boom! you’re in jail.
It’s back up…no explanation about it either way. I’ve had complaints towards me before and each time FB told me and then also told me about the findings, which were always in my favor. whatever
Send Zuckerberg some roses, IDC_SARC. Tel him you’re sorry, sniffle a little, and grovel.
You need to do your memoirs, too, before all that stuff is lost and your posterity is down the tubes.
Thunderbirds aircraft flipped over while taxiing in bad weather, both individuals extracted and one the way to the hospital, one already arrived for examination…
http://www.whio.com/news/thunderbird-plane-flips-its-top-dayton-air-show/9hYLy25uRDPep71YW9P2HJ/
I never actually had to do it, but when I was a firefighter at Dugway Proving Ground, in Utah (a couple of zillion aeons ago!), I was trained in aircraft crash rescue, and probably the reason it took so long to extricate the trapped pilots in that F-16, is the required caution when working with the ejection seat, which is REALLY dangerous.
I wonder if it was a microburst that flipped that F-16?
At Ellington earlier this week we had a F16 pilot have to eject when his plane caught fire as he was trying to take off.
He’s ok last I heard.

Heard about this earlier, thanks for the good news update.

Holy crap!!
Claymores??
“Craig Lang,27 from Ayden NC, is also a former U.S. Army soldier that drew national attention when two years ago drove from his base in Fort Bliss Texas nonstop to North Carolina with a car loaded with claymore mines and two M4 rifles after his pregnant wife sent him various videos of her having sex with other men. Once there he proceeded to mine the perimeter of her condominium with claymores and attempted to murder her.”
Oh come on. Who hasnt wanted to do that a time or two?
I think she was some kinda messed up, too, to send him videos of her infidelity.
They all three come off as complete whack jobs, in my view.
Promote ahead of peers?
They seem to have a strong desire to engage in high-risk stuff without a clear direction to what they are doing.
Running around in hostile territory without having proper paperwork? I guess there are no borders for them anywhere?
Meh, Top 50 AND I lay claim to Honorary First once again!
I’ve got a 2000 Chevy Silverado. Used to own 2 Rangers. So it just me or do Chevys spend less time in the repair shop than Fords. I don’t know much about Dodge but I hear they are pretty reliable
2002 Dodge Dakota owner- had some issues right off the lot, but the stealership had to fix those. Since then, just normal maintenance and wear and tear.
I’ve heard that if you own a Dodge pickup. You really never have to worry about any power train issue ever. They are well made in that regard
Well, the popular story among Ford truck drivers is that on a really still night, especially when the weather is chill and thee is no wind, that if you stand just right and listen REALLY carefully – you can hear the Chevies rusting.
could not resist. On a serious note – all depends on how you maintain and treat whatever it is. I had a very reliable Renault once, had a horribly unreliable BMW 2002, and had two consecutive-year Hyundais one of which was a POS and the other needed only one minor repair in 11 years. It’s a crapshoot, but how you maintain it makes more difference than what brand it is.
I buy American for my trucks my wife likes Nissan she has a 2015 Versa. And that thing has some miles on it with no issues. I’ve heard that most foreign cars are made better I guess it’s all about the maintaince
Got a 20yr old Honda CRV. Other than normal maintenance im still waiting for it to die. Its my daily driver to work and the AWD is really handy
Can’t go very wrong with Honda- been riding their motorcycles for years. Last was a CBR-1100XX that now belongs to my son, and still runs like a champ.
99 Super Duty crew cab 8 ft bed.
Took out the seats at 200k and turned it into a movable shed and scafolding (7 ft pipe staging fits the box snug).
Chains on the rears for all weather performance around the property.
Not road worthy but not done yet.
Am currently driving the third Canadian built 3/4 Ton, 4WD GMC pickup of my lifetime. She’s 13 years old with just under 77K and barely broken in.
On all three, other than routine LOF’s (Lube, Oil, Filter) have never had to replace even so much as a turn signal bulb on any of them.
The repair shop I go to is ran by a guy who drives a GMC. They say “Want to know what to drive? Just look at what your mechanic drives and go with that.”
Ford mechanic at the dealership drives a camry
Best mechanic I’ve ever had would tell you you were driving a piece of junk and needed a new car – then fix it for you so you could get another 100k out of it.
Honest as the day is long, crotchety and rough as they come. Loved that man.
We lost him to a stroke a few years ago and I’ve not found another mechanic I can trust.
Sounds like Chuck. Biker?
Never saw him on a bike.
First name was Andy. I could send my college-student Venturing girls to him and know they’d not get cheated. As honest and dependable as the day is long.
We’ve usually had Fords.
My eldest is driving my Ford Escape with about 300k miles on it and, other than routine maintenance, we’ve had no problems.
My wife’s Expedition is around 250k miles and about to need some real repairs – but we got it 2nd hand.
I have my brother’s 1960’s F250 that, if I just took a little time with it, would run.
My late fathers 1990’s E350 still runs – needs a little tranny work is all.
Take care of your vehicle and most of them will last a long time, IMHO.
I was gifted a Ford Taurus with about 100K miles on the clock. Almost immediately the head gasket blew, the transmission detonated, the engine mounts failed, and the heat exchanger started throwing greasy smoke out the vents into the cabin.
Maybe not fair, but I’ll not be bothering Ford with my business. Ever.
The Ford Windstar was no prize, either.
We’ve had 2 Escapes, 1 Expedition, an unknown number of F150s or F250s, a number of Econolines (including one of the first back in the 1960s), one Ford Falcon Futura… All have been good vehicles.
Most of the F150s/250s succumbed to things like people jumping stop signs in front of us, or just plain old age.
I had a Chevy p/u – I think a C15 – that I got 3rd hand and ran for years. We had to replace the axle rails, but otherwise it ran for a long time for a 1960’s p/u.
Now the Dodge Caravans (we’ve had 3 and my son’s had a couple) have been awesome. I think we got our first one 3rd hand in the late 80’s.
The last Ranger I owned was an 02 had 50k when I bought it. Sold it with over 360k. ( commuting miles when I was working ). But I put thousands in it just to keep it running many times it was one thing that fouled up that led to another thing going to hell. Really frustrating.
I have a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser with 90.000 miles on it, I’ve never had any issues with it, my last vehicle a 2006 ford ranger was nice until it hit 60000 miles then it went to shit the one before that 95 Toyota 4-runner
Had 520.000 miles on it and sold it when I enlisted in the army in 2005
Never had any major issues with it either
2006 Saturn Vue, with over 255,000 miles.

I hear good things about early 1980’s Jaguars. In fact, those are the only cars that the Vice President of the proud woman owned business that I work for will drive.
The issue with early Jags use to be their electrical system made by Lucas electronics. The old joke was, “the English drink warm beer because Lucas electronics makes their refrigerators.”
I’ve heard a few horror stories about what happens when a Jaguar gets water under its hood and their electrical systems crap out.
Almost as bad as a Mercedes.
My folks had a 1972 220D and they traded it in after a mere 520,000 miles.
The ex had a 2002 C-class.
Hunk of shit would be kind.

The Germans didn’t bomb Lucas because they thought Lucas were allies.
Lucas built a vacuum cleaner once – their only product that didn’t suck.

Can always tell a Brit car guy… they know tons of these.
An aficionado told me that
Lucas wiring is hollow, full of compressed smoke,
And leaks constantly.
For our dining enjoyment this evening, Mrs. AW1 and I will be having sauteed Mahi-Mahi fillets marinated in maple syrup, soy, sesame oil and ginger, with lemon and ginger infused Jasmine rice on the side. Lemon slices and a chilled Sauvignon Blanc will be near at hand.
Sounds like a recipe that I found on All Recipes. A lot of ingredients and time invested making that sauce. I take a bite into it, and think to my self that I just took all that time to make teriyaki sauce.
It’s very simple, Hack, and doesn’t taste at all like teriyaki. It’s just equal parts soy and maple syrup, a slice of ginger and a splash of oil. Fish doesn’t take long to marinate, either; about an hour will do.
I found a photo of a USMC 2 star in a float book for 3/5 marines 59-61′ and i was wondering if anyone can help me Identify him. it was loose in the book and signed to a marine who worked for him ( I Think) I don’t know how to put the photo up on here so any help would be great

Try that.
The USMC had about 80 active duty Generals in 2006.
I imagine the number was probably less back then. Shouldn’t be that hard to find.
ok , so it turns out i have a color version w/ autograph of Retired Maj. Gen. Kenneth J. Houghton. now to try to get some information about him…

Tried to buy an Iphone and sign up for monthly service(VERIZON) with a credit card. They offered a 15% discount off the monthly fee and accessories for veterans once you sign up.
Did it all on the net with the credit card and got an email confirmation.
Got a second email telling me to call the credit department. Waited on the phone for about twenty minutes because “my call is important to them”. They wanted more info in addition to my SSN and credit check and credit card. I said what if I just pay the contract in adavance. Fine, you can do that. Will I get the veterans discount? NO. Cancel the order!
No can do, you have to talk to customer service I would be happy to transfer you. Click.
I immediately reported my card stolen and sure enough I get an email from VERIZON’s fraud dept. It went unanswered.
This is a classic case of “bait and switch”
Specifically targeting veterans.
Verizon sucked the life out of every company and employee they ever touched. It’s the old “Vet Discount” scam, that only exists until you read the fine print. Had one offered to me and the continuing questions were about my veteran status. So as asked, I sent a redacted DD214 (no PII) via fax and they wouldn’t accept it with redaction. I gave the same answer as you, except I added, I retired from your company after you took over GTE and decimated it, and then you discontinued the retiree discounts for all services. I went to AT&T and I gave you another shot because of this veteran discount and now I find, it’s the same bullshit that made me pull the pin and retire earlier than I had wanted to. You guys are nothing but bottom line first, screw the customer artists. (I always hate when they end with, “Would you be willing to take a brief survey of your service experience with us today?” Not just no but fuck no!) Then I sent a detailed complaint to my State’s Attorney General for Consumer Fraud. Like you…crickets. Seems Verizon is a big lobbyist on Capitol Hill and in States like mine which are run by Democrats. I stayed with AT&T. In fact after talking with them about my service, they upgraded my plan for free and no contract at all. Just month to month. So I’ll stick with who’s treating me right. If the local Verizon cell phone store were on fire, I’d only walk across the street to see if there was some gas to throw on it. Fuck ’em! Rant over.
Hmmmm. . . We just switched to Verizon last month (no real complaints with AT&T service, but Verizon gives better coverage where I live, and unlimited data). I got the veteran’s discount with no problem, but we also signed up at a Verizon store, and I showed them my ID card. Sure enough, the discount showed up on my first bill.
Verizon–We’re not happy until you’ve not happy!
Speaking of new cars – just signed the papers for a new one. Well, not exactly a car. Guess it’s an SUV. A KIA Sportage.
These new fangled vehicles certainly are fancy. Still, very little more $$ than a Jeep Cherokee purchased in 1991, with a much better guarantee.
I just now picked up my “snail” mail, and almost threw away a letter that looked like junk mail.
It was from STRATA, which supplies my Internet connection, landline telephone, cable television, and emergency call button connection.
The letter that I was about to throw away – – – ?
It contained a CHECK for eight dollars and forty-seven cents!
Plus, the letter informed me of a barbecue on Thursday afternoon.
Also in my “snail” mail were the “BLITZ” metal polishing cloths that I’d ordered from the AMAZON web site.
Now, I can shine my brass “US” cavalry belt buckle in time to wear it on Independence Day when (or if, depending on my health) I go to watch the parade.
I’m grateful to the Department of Veterans Affairs for giving me a Powered Mobility Cart, so I can go to the parade and also go watch the fireworks display that night.
I missed all that stuff last year, because I couldn’t walk but just a few steps.
I plan to be in full khaki uniform.
Although I’ll be using my cart, I can stand up long enough to salute the flag as it passes by.
I’ve got some fireworks, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to enjoy setting them off, because of the pain and the physical effort required.
Maybe I’ll celebrate with some hot dogs and watermelon.
Hey JRM, I found another live Railcam, this one’s on Horseshoe Curve in PA, did you get to check out the one in Ashland, VA?
@ A PROUD INFIDEL:
That’s a nice one!
Thanks for letting me know about it.
I’ll definitely bookmark it.
I’ve been over that Horseshoe Curve at least a couple of times riding on Amtrak between Chicago and Washington, D.C.
I think it was the “Cardinal”, but I’m not certain.
I had to change trains in Philadelphia, and with time to kill, I was able to visit Independence Hall and see the Liberty Bell.
I just now watched a freight train going over the Horseshoe Curve, and was pleased to notice that many of the cars had not yet been vandalized with graffiti.
I’ve seen videos of trains in Ashland, Virginia.
You say there’s a live streaming video from there?
I haven’t seen that, so I’ll have to look for it and add it to my “FAVORITES” folder.
Thank you so much!
@ A PROUD INFIDEL:
I just now found the live streaming camera from Ashland, Virginia, and added it to my “FAVORITES” folder.
Here’s the URL:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad0ChfeAWdo
Thank you!
Yeah, I shared a link to the Ashland cam on last week’s WOT.
Hey JRM, check out the YouTube Virtual Railfan Tower 55 camera in Ft. Worth, TX:
@ A PROUD INFIDEL:
Thanks!
That’s a good one!
I just read an article in the Bangor Daily Worker with the headline “The addiction epidemic is the millennials’ Vietnam”
by social justice warrior Patricia Callahan.
http://callahan.bangordailynews.com/2017/06/24/home/the-addiction-epidemic-is-the-millennials-vietnam/
Un fucking believable.
Pimping the dead and wounded again.
Addiction is a horrible thing, but the apparent lack of any modicum of personal responsibility in the writing on this matter is just astounding.
Can you say “special snowflake”? I knew you could!
Another SJW twatwaffle in desperate need of a cunt punt…
The biggest thing that pisses me off about the opioid epidemic is the enabling narcan provides.
OD? No problem, just get that $1200 shot FOR FREE, and what’s more, nobody faces charges for it!
No. Administering Narcan to an overdose is no different from administering CPR to someone in cardiac arrest, or applying a tourniquet to someone who with a serious arterial bleed, or using a fire extinguisher on a fire.
It’s not just addicts who need Narcan, either. Toddlers get into mama’s prescription painkillers (all it takes is one to kill a small child). Granny gets confused and takes two pills from one bottle and none of the other instead of one of each. A first responder arrives at a home and gets a few grains of resident’s carfentanil (used to “cut” heroin, 10000 more powerful than heroin) on his arm, and three doses of Narcan are the only thing that keeps him alive long enough to get him to the hospital. And sometimes we keep the addicts alive long enough for this to happen:
https://www.ems1.com/ems-heroes/articles/279302048-Man-overdoses-twice-in-24-hours-comes-back-to-thank-his-rescuers/
Using Narcan in most cases is actually very different than resuscitating a coded patient or or stopping bleeding.
The cases you’re outlining are the zebras in a herd of horses.
Have you ever worked on an ALS rig or in an ER?
Yes, to both. I’m an EMT.
that’s not ALS and EMTs aren’t ER personnel. Your heart is in the right place but you post with as though you’re out of touch.
Tell me of your personal experience with Naloxone administration rather than posting feel good stories.
http://www.whas11.com/news/investigations/iteam/narcan-saving-lives-often-the-same-ones-over-and-over-again/396288854
saves the same lives over and over….frequent fliers
none of the articles I’m seeing would be considered scholarly articles.
Asking EMS, therapists, family etc their opinion on Naloxone administration is one step removed from asking the manufacturer.
Since the addiction is a huge drain on society with a relatively low treatment success rate (+/- 30%) translates into a huge drain on resources and tax money there’s nothing far fetched about wanting data removed from emotion. Perhaps consequences for the frequent fliers to promote some measure of accountability and deterrence…I dunno. It’s not a simple problem.
ALL the trucks in my agency are ALS trucks.
Yes, it’s VERY different. These people CHOSE to take a substance they knew quite well could kill them.
People who code don’t necessarily choose to have a heart attack.
Not the same game, not the same ballpark, not even the same fucking sport.
SEA, many people who need Narcan did NOT choose to ingest a substance they knew could kill them. Read my previous response again, especially the second paragraph.
most did…the vast majority did….find a EMS service anywhere in this country in which Naloxone isn’t in the vast majority of cases administered to people taking illegal drugs, intentionally exceeding their prescribed dosages or mixing it intentionally with alcohol ….insinuating otherwise is just ridiculous
That may have been true a few years ago, but that percentage is decreasing. The vast majority of illegal drug users aren’t trying to get high. They started out on prescription painkillers for an injury and can’t get/afford another Rx, but the pain is still there. And there is some bad stuff getting into the street supply that users often aren’t aware of until it’s too late.
you need to explore some peer review articles and quit getting your info from opinion pieces like the ones you’re posting.
I’ve heard those same BS stories from addicts since the late 70s. Addicts have an excuse for everything …. enabling them doesn’t help.
https://www.ems1.com/opioids/articles/130529048-Why-increasing-access-to-naloxone-doesnt-enable-addicts/
it’s on the interwebz it must be true…or not.
Naloxone is great for preserving the EMS customer base. 🙂
An ER pro of my acquaintance describes interviews with patients recovering from overdoses, where the patient stated that they chose to try “the new batch” (or whatever) near an ER so they could get ‘the shot” if things went bad.
We’re not in the business of drumming up repeat business from “frequent flyers”. Our job is to save lives. We don’t pick and choose which ones are “worthy”. You take away Naloxone, and you are risking the lives of the curious toddlers, the confused grannies, and first responders everywhere, including me.
The article got yanked after the first comment and is now buried. But the link is still good and screenshots are on file.
@ SERGEANT FIRST CLASS JONN LILYEA:
Why don’t you switch to using BLOGGER, which is what I use?
It’s FREE.
Also, they haven’t yet blocked any of my posts in which I use unpopular, controversial, and politically incorrect comments.
WordPress is free, too. But for the amount of traffic I get here, I need my own server which is fairly expensive. You would never get into the blog if I used Blogger, which generally sucks for actual blogging anyway.
So how many cigars did you buy with what I sent you, Jonn?
Holy cow what do you do with 2 kids when it’s 117 outside
I’m done doing this Fackng Heat…..
so now or should I say we are looking to relocate here soon
Any ideas west of the Mississippi,
that has good quality of life good schools low decent cost of living
and is not in the middle of a bunch of crybaby leftist
And before I forget a good VA Health system and has Tri-Care prime
I’ve heard good things about Grand Junction CO, it’s on I-70 about 25-30 miles East of the CO-UT State Line, an equal distance from Salt Lake City UT as it is from Las Vegas, NV and about a 5-6 hour drive to Denver.
Chugwater, WY. That way you can keep all of us updated on the Big Boy’s overhaul and send us free chili fixings.
I was gonna suggest West Yellowstone, MT.
Sucks ass in the winter but barely cracks 80 even in the middle of summer.
Nah, Chugwater is the go to place. Here’s some good stuff about it.
Summer temps only in the mid 80’s with overnight lows in the mid 40’s.
45 miles north of Cheyenne which has a VA Regional Medical Center, an Air Force Base for commissary shopping, and it’s only 145 miles from Denver if the Cheyenne VA Center can’t meet your needs.
You can buy a three bedroom, two bath, 1900 square foot, one level home (w/AC) with a 900 sq ft car garage/shop for $99K.
Wyoming has no state income tax.
Chugwater’s not Cheyenne or Laramie, (where all the liberals/college millennials hang out) which is a good thing.
Couple of drawbacks, though. Chugwater’s population is only about 200 souls and it do have a tendency to be downright breezy at times, especially in the winter.
But other than that, what’s not to like?
Claw knows his stuff about places out there. Wish we could be out there like we were last year. Claw, Mrs Claw, and Scooby are awesome.
Thanks, sj. Like I’ve said before, you and yours are welcome here anytime.
But Skippy, in all sincerity Chugwater ain’t the place to go to. However, do check out the real estate web sites for homes in the Ranchettes area north of Cheyenne.
Couple of years ago when Mrs. Claw and I were thinking about moving to Cheyenne, there were some pretty sweet deals for homes with five to ten acres and already zoned for horses/livestock.
Just remember that the total population of the entire state of Wyoming is about the same as a medium sized American city, but with really, really long streets between you and your neighbors.
Oh, and pick-up trucks with herding dogs in the bed outnumber the people four to one.
My youngest son is going to Boy Scout camp on Monday and ending of Friday. He is both exited and scared. He is scared because this is going to be the longest he has been away from his mother and myself. We got him a new tent and sprayed it with Camp Dry before I had to go to work. He decided to pull out his 72 hour pack and add some thing to it because, in his own words, “it is more prepared than the packing list they gave us”. I’m so proud of my boy.
Smart kid. One should occasionally test-use those prep kits, to know if they are actually stocked properly.
We were just talking last week about the old rub your finger on a shelter half from the inside during a rain. Life lesson.
I don’t know why I just remembered this, but a friend of mine had the “honor” of guarding John Walker Lindh after his capture. He once told me that while he was there they fed him 3 times a day and what they always gave him was a pork chow mein MRE.
That cocksmoker Lindh could be out in a year of so for good behavior. He will probably leave the country as he has procured Irish Citizenship while incarcerated.
Any charges dropped previously?
Would it not be a laugh-riot, as he walked up to the final “out you go” gate, to get served on a new arrest warrant for a previous dropped charge where the statute of limitations had not run.
Yeah, but they likely were dropped with prejudice as part of the plea bargain that got Lindh 20 years vice a possible 3 life terms back in 2002. (One of the original 10 charges against Lindh was conspiracy to commit murder, which I’m pretty sure has no statute of limitations. It was one of those dropped when he pleaded guilty to two of the other crimes.) So I’m pretty sure that’s not gonna happen.
