Orange County Sheriff loses AR

| January 28, 2016

The LA Times reports that an Orange County Sheriff Department deputy needs your help searching for the AR rifle that he put on the trunk of his deputy-mobile and forgot about until more recently.

The unnamed deputy was starting his shift around 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Southwest Operations Division’s Aliso Viejo station and preparing his equipment for patrol, according to sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Jeff Hallock.

The deputy had placed the rifle, inside its case, on the trunk lid of his patrol car when he became distracted and drove off to conduct his patrol shift in Aliso Viejo and Laguna Hills. It wasn’t until 3:15 a.m. Wednesday, nearly eight hours later, that the lawman realized his weapon was missing.

The department has activated all of their resources to search for the gun, including reserves and detectives.

While you’re out looking for the firearm, keep an eye out for the inmates they lost, too;

The absence of the men — Jonathan Tieu, 20, Bac Duong, 43, and Hossein Nayeri, 37 — went unnoticed for at least 16 hours Friday before jail staff discovered they were missing during a nightly count of inmates.

Thanks to David for the link.

Bobo sends us another link from Fox News that reports this happens more than you would think. The Department of Homeland Security has lost control of 1,300 badges, 165 firearms and 589 cell phones in the past three years.

The majority of the credentials belonged to employees of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), while others belonged to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) employees.

The lost or stolen guns also mostly belonged to CBP employees, though others were cited as belonging to TSA and ICE workers. The agencies all fall under DHS.

Sounds like the Feds need gun control.

Gee whiz! What about existing laws prohibiting the possession and use of firearms that are listed as stolen or missing, why don’t they just wait for the parties that took them to just turn them in? /SARC Our own Government Agencies can’t hold onto their own firearms and yet pols and bureaucrats want to disarm law-abiding people.

“The Department of Homeland Security has lost control of 1,300 badges….” And that’s why one should never put a badge in a rear pocket. I guarantee that at least half of the lost badges fell out during a sit-down in a restroom.

The sheriff in OC lost an AR??? And three inmates??? Well… thing have changed since I was a young man living in that area. Sad…

AS for TSA, shit those clowns could fuck up a wet dream… look who they had working for them at one time… “we run towards danger when everyone else runs away from it”.

OSC(SW) Retired

Still mad that they turned you down for employment =P

I’d shave my junk with a rusty chainsaw before I’d go work for the TSA…

I’ve had many cases in the past of what I thought was love that turned out to be infatuation but the hate I feel for the TSA is for real.

So. . . a lost rifle and three lost inmates. Let the person who found the rifle, use it to find the inmates.

In more serious news. . . if I were the one to find a full auto M16, in a presumably dark case, in the dark hours of the night (7pm-3am), with few to no witnesses. . . you think I’m going to turn it in or tell someone? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

Combat Historian

Which reminds me, has the Keystone Kops in PG Country Maryland ever locate the AR-15 that was left on the side of the road by one of its moronic minions ???

OSC(SW) Retired

This is why we can’t have nice things.

In a related incident. My friend who owns a store in San Diego once received a shipment to his store address of fully functional M-16s that were supposed to go to the San Diego Sheriff through the mail.

I can’t conceal carry, but they can send automatic weapons through the mail? This state is truly nuts.

Ex-Garbage Gun Shooter

I pretty much think everything is a conspiracy of some sort so take this with a grain of salt… I’m wondering if this incident may be politically motivated. The Orange County Sheriffs’ Office is pro-second amendment, loosing an AR takes a bit of skill, gun control is a hot issue right now, and Oprah just made a killing off her loosing 50 pounds.

Just saying…

CCO

Wait, run that last part by me again, s’ il vous plait.

Ex-PH2

Oprah lost 50 pounds? Now you know where that gun went.

Casey

What, they shot the fat?

The Other Whitey

I’ve repeated my go-to response about who local, state (especially California, since I live here), and federal governments are and aren’t comfortable with being armed often enough, you all probably know what I’ll say.

…but they’ll GIVE this asshole a gun!

But liberals say we’re SUPPOSED to trust the Government, just look at what a GREAT JOB they do of protecting our identities and PII! /SARC

Nothing but the best for a government employee\liberal. Everyone else, not so much …

This doesn’t pass the smell test with me. They may want to look into the deputy’s financials and see if he’s running a little short on a regular basis. Stupid does happen, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the rifle was sold.

Ex-PH2

And the police wonder why people don’t really trust them a whole lot these days.

Ahhh………..the memories!

When I first saw this story on FoxNews yesterday I could almost sympathize with the cop….almost since he’s going to lose a couple of weeks pay or worse.

I can’t tell you how many times (back in the day) when I’d put a couple of coffees, a clipboard, my briefcase and God knows what else on the roof of my patrol car and drive off, but thankfully never a firearm.

As I said above, “I can’t tell you how many times” since the distractions are real – an auto accident with aided call, a sick baby, family dispute, robbery, burglary in progress…..next thing you know the back window of the patrol car is wearing a new shade of coffee or there are police forms flying all over the place.

This cop is in some pretty deep trouble….maybe even fired.

I’ve done the same thing myself. My worst was when I left my Maglight sitting on the roof in front of my light bar. Drove off and the first time I hit the brakes that thing came rolling down the windshield and hit the hood with a loud thump. Scared the hell out of me.
I’ve never, ever lost a weapon for several hours though.

LIRight

I still have my old Maglite – with more than a few nicks on it from doing exactly what you did.

I did upgrade it with a new LED bulb. What difference it makes!! Hell, the batteries could be dowm 75% and you’ll still have exceptional brightness.

Let’s not forget about the ~2,000 weapons the ATF “lost” control of in Operation Fast and Furious. I’ve long said that if the government wants to start a database of firearms, they should start with those.

CAARNG 68W

Orange County brah, like most things from Southern California, people have high hopes for us – and we always disappoint (The San Diego Chargers, Lakers/Clippers, Richard Nixon, The 909, LTC Patrick Frey, Marines who get stationed in San Diego, NTC, 29 Palms, etc. etc. etc.)

Silentium Est Aureum

But…but…but…only cops can be trusted with scary black guns!
