“Contained”, Eh? Intel Community Says, “Um, no.”

| December 7, 2015

Remember when the       current Occupant, 1600 Penn Ave, Wash DC       POTUS proclaimed that Da’esh (AKA “ISIS”) had been “contained”?  You know, that proclamation that occurred shortly before the Paris terrorist attacks that killed 130 and wounded hundreds more?

Remember when the CJCS flatly contradicted the POTUS’s assessment about Da’esh being “contained”?

Well, among those in a position to know apparently it isn’t just the CJCS that disagrees with the POTUS.  Apparently, the US Intelligence Community also disagrees.  An IC report recently ordered by the White House “says that the ISIS terror group will grow in numbers and territory unless it suffers significant losses in Iraq and Syria.”

Contained?  Yeah right.  Sounds to me like the report says they’re getting stronger.  Maybe “contained” is simply this Administration’s Doublespeak for “an enemy getting stronger”.

For some reason, the acronym “SCoaMF” comes to mind.  And  not when I think of Da’esh.

On a side note, why is the Whitehouse the ONLY place I can find calling them ISIL? Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on that. I mean it’s not wrong. Just seems out of touch.

Ex-PH2

It IS out of touch, Smitty. Like the UK’s Cameron, it’s a sign that bodaprez does not take them seriously, and most likely never will.

It’s nice to be protected from harm, but his disconnection from the real world is disturbing.

19D2OR4 - Smitty

His whole speech was a combination of ‘WTF?’ and head scratching for me.

MustangCryppie

Guys, ISIL is the commonly used acronym throughout the intel and defense communities. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Really, it is. I work in an intel shop and it’s the standard.

MustangCryppie

But having said that about ISIL being the standard, that does NOT mean that Obama and his minions aren’t out of touch. They most certainly are.

When Obama said that ISIL was the JV team and al-Qaeda was on the run, I thought WTF over…

Then I remembered the election was coming up. Explained it all.

smoke-check

Maybe its an underhanded jab at Israel. After all Israel did not exist in the Levant, or at least when the term was widely used.

No explanation would surprise me anymore.

MustangCryppie

And speaking of terms, it seems that Tashfeen Malik is not the terrorist bitch’s name.

“Tashfeen Malik (King) is a nom de guerre for a Muslim Jihadist from the annals of Muslim history. As he is known to Muslims “تاشفين ملك الموحدين” Tashfeen Malik Al-Muahideen, in English: Tafhseen King of the Unitarians (Muslims) and the conquerer of the west. The history stems from when Yusuf ibn Tashfin led the Muslim forces in the Battle of Zallaqa/Sagrajas. He came to Andalusia from Morocco to help the Muslims fight against Alfonso VI, eventually achieving victory and allowing the Muslims to remain in Spain for centuries. The battle has been symbolic for Muslim victory against the Christians.”

Great explanation Mustang, thanks.

r0gu3patri0t

By using ISIS as an identifying term it gives legitimacy to Israel so we can’t do that. Using Daesh instead of ISIL is really just a way to name call the JV team, because you know a good foreign policy means insulting them, but not much else.

Evil Airgod

This is what the alphabet soup of agencies in the beltway is currently engaged in; trying to figure out what to call them. Ask any Executive branch agency and you’ll get “ISIL” “ISIS” “IS” or “Daesh”. If you’re too busy struggling to define the problem, then it absolves you of actually having to fix the problem.

Obama:
“What is true is that from the start, our goal has been first to contain, and we have contained them. They have not gained ground in Iraq. And in Syria they’ll come in, they’ll leave. But you don’t see this systematic march by ISIL across the terrain. What we have not yet been able to do is to completely decapitate their command and control structures.”

All this conflating meaning THAT HE NEVER MEANT to the word “contained” bullshit is complete partisan political crap, and the obsessive criticism of his comment is ridiculous.

He was clear what he meant.

L. Taylor

Hondo, the context of the conversation is recent events. Have you even bothered to read the interview you are so obsessively outraged about?

Of course the President knows ISIS gained ground since they began, but that gain has stopped. That is what he was referring to.

It is pointless to argue if you are going to not take the comments in context. If you are going to keep acting like every phrase exists entirely in its own universe and you get to assign meaning to it based entirely on your assumptions than a discussion is a waste of time.

What is the point of your issue with this anyway? Are you seriously trying to claim that the President does not know what the fuck is going on with respect to ISIS? He knows exactly as much as the intelligence community shares with him and they share everything they have they that is relevant to making decisions.

This nitpick bullshit is idiotic. He made a ill-timed comment. If there had not been a Paris attack the next week attributed to ISIS this comment would not have even raised an eyebrow and sure as shit would not be a political football used to outrage idiots.

And yes, I consider you an absolute fucking idiot if you are outraged about what he said in this interview.

He was speaking about ISIS in a specific context, at a specific time, with the information he had at the time.

And what he said was reasonably accurate at that moment in time within the context, and based on what he meant with his words and not what others are choosing to interpret his words to mean.

UpNorth

Let’s see, Al Qaeda is on the run, General Motors is alive and ISIS is contained? That’s how this clown manages national security.
Then there was the Mid-East Apology Tour, pretty sure that gave the Muslim Brotherhood the warm fuzzies. Then, the Arab Spring.
I’d bet that Buh-rock is still pissed that the MB’s pick got his ass tossed out of office. Then, there was that resounding success in Libya, and the Red Line in Syria.
Those are just some of his “successes”.

UpNorth

I forgot a dandy of Buh-rock’s, that beheadings, shootings and burning people alive are bad, but global warming climate change are the real problem.

Weekend Warrior in Texas

I do not believe he does not know they are not contained, I feel he is simply lying about it and expects the US citizens to believe the horseshit. I am still wondering if you have been and are taking Adderol.

Former11b

Honestly, I think it’s number 3. I don’t think he’s a Muslim, but he clearly wants to give Muslims the keys to the country.

Casey

I hope his arse tastes good, Taylor. That was a magnificent display of apologist cant.

The 120 murdered citoyennes of Paris disagree. It’s pretty funny you dismiss the attack, as it’s not an inconvenient interruption of the narrative, but proof that Obama is bad at his job.

I have to echo others, and wonder why you even come here. You used to occasionally make a sane argument, but lately you’ve turned in to an Obamaphile lap dog, mindlessly regurgitating the official party line.

USMCMSgtRet

Somehow, Lars is able to get projections of what the resident p*$$y is thinking, hence he knows precisely what context he means.

Ex-PH2

It’s interesting, isn’t it? That someone who has no connection to security or the intelligence community thinks he knows more than the people who are actively working in it, and are saying, in plain English, that ISIS/Daesh is NOT contained, and the threat will continue to grow unless it suffers significant losses.

The fact that there are oil tankers lining up at the Turkish-Syrian border loaded with crude from ISIS-pumped wells, as shown by Reuters last week, shows that they are still finding ways to get funding. The surplus of crude doesn’t faze them, and I thinks it’s a safe bet that the removal by the Saudis of a production ceiling on crude won’t faze them, either.

They have a plan that is working. Looks like they’ll be sticking to it and continuing to expand.

L. Taylor

Stop equivocating on the word “contained”.

He was clear what he meant in that context.

It is not the way you are using it.

I do not think ISIS is “contained” if you mean no longer a threat or no longer capable of exporting terrorism.

Neither does the President.

BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT HE FUCKING MEANT WHEN HE SAID “CONTAINED”.

Richard

You keep using that word. I do not think that it means what you think that it means.

When you make a speech to the world, you need to use words in ways that convey the meaning that you want your audience to walk away with. If he meant something besides, “unable to act outside their sphere of influence” then he should have used a different word. If his speech was misunderstood, that is not my fault for understanding the word the way that most people understand it, that is his fault for using words in unusual ways and not forcefully explaining what he meant.

If you tell me that your best friends nickname is “shorty” I assume that he is either short or very tall. Context will tell me which you meant. I listened to the context and I think he meant “contained” in the sense that they could not act outside their sphere of influence – eastern Syria and west and central Iraq. If he meant something else then he should have explained what he meant.

He said blue, I heard blue, and I think blue. You are having a hissy fit because you think that I should have heard blue and think green. No.

I have raised a bunch of teenagers and, while it is a little hard to remember, I once was a teenager. All teens seem to go through a phase where they say things like “to me, blue means red … I can change the definition to anything I like”. Eventually teens get over this. You and Obama need to get over this.

68W58

Nonsense! When Humpty Dumpty uses a word it means only what he wanted it to mean, nothing more and nothing less.

UpNorth

Did you stomp your feet when you yelled “But that is not what he fucking meant? You’re the same as that ditzy teener who cried “Leave Brittney alone”.

Casey

As SCoaMF likes to say, “words matter.” He loves to parse his words. All we’re doing is applying logic and common sense to his claims.

You, on the other hand, have been reduced to quibbling over what “is” means.

3E9

Martin Luther King said perception is reality. So rebardless of your repeated explanation what do most people think of when they hear the word contained? Playing semantics is akin to the liberals criticizing Bush for the Mission Accomplished statement. Give it up; he said something stupid and now is being called out for it. He isnt perfect by any means and screws up every now and then. Deal with it

I caught the tail end of a radio news item that said that a big fish ISIS gut was DRT from a strike. Seems I recall someone here predicting that last week? OVER

Brietbart just posted a quote from LTC Raplh Peters on FOX saying:

“Mr. President, we’re not afraid,” Peters said. We’re angry. We’re pissed off. We’re furious. We want you to react. We want you to do something. You’re afraid. I mean, this guy is such a total pussy, it’s stunning. We, the American people, who he does not know in any intimate sort of manner, we want action. We want action against Islamic State.”

Awesome.

Ex-PH2

Well, sj, he also thinks we’re low on gas and oil so he’s mandating bumping up the amount of ethanol in fuel supplies, too.

I said something it on the WOT, but this additional info – Saudis removing the oil production ceiling – came up today.

That is nonsense.

He is just not an idiot.

And if anyone is a afraid it is idiots like Peters that fear monger constantly about Islam and terrorists.

‘…that fear monger constantly about Islam and terrorists.’

I would think about 30 people in San Bernadino would disagree with it being fear-mongering — except that 14 of them are dead. Killed by…wait for it… ISLAMIC TERRORISTS.

GDContractor

He is not an idiot. That’s right! He wrote two autobiographies to convince us of that fact.

I am just tired of the relentless idiotic attacks that have no substance or merit.

A proud Infidel®™

Since when has B. Hussein 0bama shown any real leadership or concern for the well being of American Citizens, let alone us Vets? He and his administration are bending over backward to bring thousands of Middle Eastern muslims to American soils as fast as they can while handing all they can as fast ass they can to illegal aliens and welfare flunkies while telling retirees there is not enough money for them to receive a COLA adjustment this year, but when has B. Hussein 0bama sacrificed any perk, privilege or luxury since he’s been in office?

Richard

I don’t know if Obama is afraid or not and neither do you. I don’t know if he is an idiot or not but but both alternatives seem plausible to me at this time. You are unwilling to accept it as a possibility so your opinion is not objective and therefore not pertinent.

Fear – there are 13 people in San Bernardino who should be alive but are not. Those people had no way of knowing that their lives were in danger so they could not prepare or be somewhere else — same as you or I. Since that really happened it now figures into my everyday existence so I changed some things about the way I live and interact with others. Is my state of readiness and awareness increased? Sure. Am I petrified with fear so that I am unable to eat, sleep, go outside, or almost every other normal activity. Not at all. 13 people were randomly selected and executed. If you are not more aware of your surroundings then I think that you are idiotic. If you want to call me fearful, I think that you are trying to overcome an opinion that conflicts with your own. You want to make me question my conclusions and diminish the influence that my words might have by making me out as a coward and thus a person whose integrity and persuasiveness can be discounted and whose words therefore mean nothing. Whatever. I stand by my statements. Your bullshit is no greater than my bullshit.

L. Taylor

He is not an idiot. His IQ is already known to be high based on his known LSAT score range.

Richard

Lars, about 20 years ago one of my best friends was a genius – the real McCoy. His ability in the IT field was not questioned by anyone. But that boy got lost in a parking lot. Obama’s IQ / LSAT score does not make him smart in all fields and many geniuses have personality flaws – they are Gods in one field and hopeless in others. The LSAT is an admission test for entrance to law school. That doesn’t make him a great military officer or a great teacher or a great president. Please note, half of all lawyers are below average.

I said that this tub of flour weighs 5 pounds but it might weigh 6. You said that it could not possibly be six. Apparently I am supposed to agree with you because you say that the container is more than 10 inches high. I think that the measure of weight is a scale not a ruler. It is a lousy analogy but the measure of a president is performance, not his LSAT score. I believe you when you say that he got a good LSAT score. Right now, I’m think that a good LSAT is not a satisfactory predictor of a good president.

GDContractor

Dennis Chevalier had an IQ of 131 as I recall, and a letter from a testing authority to prove it. Ergo, you would defend Dennis Chevalier if he were president.
Why am I not surprised? (it’s a rhetorical question)

L. Taylor

Terrorism is an overrated threat and the call for an occupation force or initiating a war with ISlam to stop terrorism is idiotic beyond beleif.

Ex-PH2

I’m going to drop this in here, because it is a direct quote from Obama’s speech last night. Apparently, Lars was too busy contemplating his navel lint to pay attention to what da Prez said.

‘Tonight, I want to talk with you about this tragedy, the broader threat of terrorism, and how we can keep our country safe.’

And THERE IT IS, in Obama’s own words: the threat of terrorism.

Lars, I do hope that some day you wake up and smell the coffee, ’cause right now, you aren’t gettin’ any.

Ex-PH2

Ooops! Here it is again, a few paragraphs later:

‘The threat from terrorism is real….’

I guess Lars must have been too busy doing something less important than watching this speech.

Really, Taylor, you are SO out of touch.

Ex-PH2

Terrorism is an overrated threat – per lars taylor.

Oh. My. God. Taylor, if you do not consider it a very real threat to the entire world, you are out of you teeny, tiny mind.

I’ve said this before, and I will repeat it: Get some professional help with your problem. Maybe you can go see Nidal Hassan and ask him how to get your head out of your anal orifice and your ass out of the sand it’s buried in.

That is by far the most asinine thing you have said to date.

L. Taylor

This is all so fucking idiotic.

What the hell do you think a large US ground troops presence would be able to accomplish in Syria?

Would it save lives? Would it end ISIS? What would that look like in 5 years?

People are idiots if they think the reticence to send too many ground troops is out of fear.

We are sending special purpose troops because this is not a fights that can be one with an occupation force.

And Obama is not the only one advising us NOT TO SEND TOO MANY GROUND TROOPS.

L. Taylor

“not a fight that can be won”…

probably other errors..

Green Thumb

You should concentrate on that thesis.

We do not need to facilitate your grades suffering because you get sidetracked.

UpNorth

Lars’d try, but word is that McD’s is replacing the counter people with touch screen kiosks.

Richard

I am opposed to sending ground troops to fight ISIS – given the current ROE. Change the ROE so that ground troops could be effective and I will reconsider.

Dave Hardin

What if the ROE were simply stated with:

ATTACK !

If you determine it should be killed, Kill it.

It would take 2 weeks, no more ISIS, and a calm peaceful Islam the result.

Casey

From Jerry Pournelle:

Two years ago when the Caliphate declared war on the United States, I said that I could eliminate it with a division of troops and some of the A-10’s. As Daesh progressed and grew and more and more of Iraq along with the US weapons left behind in Iraq fell into Caliphate hands, I raised that to two divisions and all of the Warthogs. Annihilating the Caliphate would be a bloodier than it would have been earlier, but still sure of accomplishment. It will now take three divisions – 50 to 60,000 men; all of the A-10’s; and sufficient air supremacy forces to assure air supremacy including eliminating all SAM’s and other ground based anti-air enemy installations, and any air resources they may have acquired.

Ex-PH2

Frankly, Dave Hardin, I have doubts that standard warfare against ISIS/Daesh will do anything other than annoy them the way mosquitoes annoy us at a good fishing hole.

If you want to stop them, then they have to be scared shitless. Period.

I know, the comment section is so much better when it’s just an echo chamber. God forbid a dissenting opinion. Dammit Lars, don’t post anything unless you agree with everyone.

The sad thing is even with all this rage and discontent, it won’t get us anyone qualified in the WH. Everything is shaping up to be a repeat episode of 2012.

sj

There’s always been a lot of dissent here but the difference was it was done without being a flaming asshole. Taylor hasn’t mastered that yet…hell he hasn’t even thought about doing so.

Claw

My take on Taylor is like having a boss who tells you to measure a telephone pole.

You do so and report back to him that it is 45 feet long.

He says “No, you idiot fuckwad, I want to know how TALL it is, not how LONG it is.”

Things kind of go downhill after that.

Pinto Nag

I never mind a dissenting opinion when it offers me a viable option. Ignoring my government which is ignoring terrorists who are coming into my country and murdering my fellow citizens, while telling me I have no right to blame the religion that spawned them, does not strike me as a viable option. Placating countries that harbor a sworn enemy doesn’t strike me as a viable option, either. I don’t argue with Taylor because he’s a dissenting voice, I argue with him because I think his thought process is the very bedrock of why terrorists are running amok all over the planet, and why 14 of our citizens died a week ago.

Casey

There’s dissent, then there’s parroting dogma.

Taylor has fallen into the latter camp.

Dave Hardin

Jonn doesn’t kick people out just because they might piss the rest of us off. He lets us deal with them on our own. I admire that. That makes us individually responsible for what we post and gives us the freedom to express our own thoughts.

Even Taylor gets it right on occasion. The man seems to be completely aware of his shortcomings, I just wish he would exercise a little more control over them.

Pinto Nag

Damn, I forgot to post the ‘sarc’ tag again. Of course what you said is correct. I do have to wonder why he went into the military in the first place, though.

Dave Hardin

I think it’s afraid it might become infected by whatever they’re spewing. I respect that concern.

OWB

Hello? Is this another thread about the genius who shall remain nameless, or can the original topic be discussed? Too late? Oh, well, gonna do it anyway.

It doesn’t take a mental giant in any field to understand that something (like a fire) or some one (like a criminal) can be contained but will remain a danger until it is eliminated or neutralized. A group of terrorists is quite like a forest fire in that regard. A fire can be contained, but if all you do is maintain it eventually a wind will kick up and blow some burning embers somewhere else other than the containment area.

Maybe terrorist were contained at some moment, like when the worst of them were locked up at Gitmo. Releasing them instead of eliminating them kind of screwed up that containment thingy. Same with claiming that terrorists on the loose, being given visas to play terrorist anywhere they opt to play terrorist, and otherwise creating havoc hither and yon isn’t being contained. We know it and the terrorists know it.

Why lie about it, when not lying about it would be so much easier?

Dave Hardin

You are being Islamophobic. If the NRA was not pushing to allow anyone to get a gun then we would have the problem contained.

Global warming has put stress on the economies everywhere. These refugees are just fleeing to preserve their own lives.

Are you suggesting that we modify the Statue of Liberty to say ” ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free, unless they are Islamic, then they can go to where this statue came from.’

Obama has brought hope and change to the world. Just not your part of it. Suck it up and lean to say Allahu Akbar.

OWB

Uhm, maybe not. Personally, I don’t care if a terrorist practices Islam, Methodism or no religion at all. Could even be a Martian. It just doesn’t matter, and the variety of terrorist should not matter to anyone with a will to survive.

Oh, sure, when implementing a plan to neutralize a particular threat it is essential to know the enemy.

In the same vein, if an individual approaches me and makes it clear that if I do nothing I will be robbed or killed, I seriously don’t care about the home life, ethnicity, marital status, or anything else about the nut – I will simply do whatever it takes to survive the encounter.

I know, I know. The special little snowflakes among us think we who know what it takes to survive are even scarier than those gunz they don’t want to think about. Whatever.

Well, while we’re all parsing whether or not POTUS meant ‘contained’ when he said ‘contained’, or whether he only meant ‘contextually contained at this very specific moment in time without regard to the overall trend’ – the Israeli government seems to think they may not be very contained in any significant operative sense of the word. The IDF is practicing scenarios for fighting ISIS on the border. Now they may just be paranoid. Or Israeli intelligence may know something that POTUS either doesn’t know or isn’t publicly admitting. To wit: ISIS is not contained in any serious sense of the word. Maybe they were a few weeks ago. I dunno. But they sure as hell didn’t stay that way for long. Although not all that bothered about it yet, it wasn’t even a topic for consideration in Israel until this past year.
