Friday morning feel good stories

| October 9, 2015

Matthew sends us our story this morning from Overbrook, Kansas, where a woman called police to tell them that she shot a man who was breaking into her house. A few minutes later, 48-year-old Bruce Jolly called police to tell them that he’d been shot at a neighbor’s house. Bruce not-so-Jolly-now is resting up in the hospital while the prosecutor weighs which charges to proffer.

Believe it or not, I finally have a morning where I can find no feel good stories. But, there is a story from the State of Lagos which should serve as a warning for those of you inclined to fire warning shots. A fellow who was in his local neighborhood watch, fired a warning shot at some car thieves and it ricocheted off of something, struck him in the head, and he was DRT. If you don’t aim at your intended target, at least pay attention to what you are aimed at. Bullets don’t know that you don’t intend to kill something.

There is something to feel good about this morning, though. James Rankin of New Castle, Pennsylvania, near Wilkes-Barre, filed a civil suit against police there for violating his civil rights. He had beat and repeatedly used stun guns on his victims while he was robbing them. Then when confronted by the police, he made a motion towards his waist band, like he had a gun. They shot him in the torso and now he’s paralyzed from the waist down. Anyway, a judge dismissed his lawsuit. So, I feel good about that.

Warning shots are wasted ammo or worse. I would think that sufficient warning would be 2 to the head, from a large caliber weapon. That is the warning that is most heeded, having few that tend to repeat their actions.

In reference to the third story….James Rankin’s lawsuit was thrown out by a Federal judge….read the story, folks. If ever there was a time when DRT is not as good as the end result – – it’s this one.

What a low-life skell!!

except the taxpayers will no doubt have to support his extravagant medical bills forever.
Should be a clause that if your criminal actions cause your disability, you get nada.

Yeah, good point. I’m not a very deep thinker and was happy enough that if the SOB wasn’t DRT a life-long sentence to a wheelchair was appropriate.

As a police academy firearms instructor once told us…the only thing that warning shots do is to warn everyone that you’re armed.

Warning Shots.

I reckon I’ve told this story before… when working at a Texas State prison we were reminded how state law required us to fire a warning shot in case of an attempted escape. It was also pointed out to us that the law didn’t specifically say when the warning shot was to be fired – before or after knocking the offender off of the fence.

A warning shot should be aimed at a non-lethal spot, like the nether regions. If that does not work, find a more important and more lethal target spot.
