Poll: 1/3 of Americans support a coup
In one of the most unscientific polls you’ll ever read about, YouGov asked a bunch of people on the internet if there was a situation in which they would support a coup in the United States. 43% of Republicans, supposedly, said that they would support the military toppling the civilian government, whereas, only 20% of Democrats and 30% of Independents said they would support a military coup.
Yeah, well, you can probably put me in the category of never supporting a coup.
YouGov’s latest research shows, however, that officers in the military are held in much greater esteem than their civilian superiors, and that they are widely viewed as having the best interests of the country in mind instead of their own selfish concerns. 70% of Americans believe that military officers generally want what is best for the country. When it comes to Congressmen, however, 71% of Americans believe that they want what is best for themselves, along with 59% for local politicians.
The funny thing is that if we mistrust politicians so much, why aren’t we electing better people to office instead of sending back the same selfish dorks year-after-year?

I prefer my truck over a coupe.
Didn’t Tip O’Neal say, “All politics is local;” ergo, Congress is nuts, but my congressman is a stand up guy. (No, really, he offered to hand walk my paperwork over to the Pentagon for my hardship discharge, which would probably have been overkill since I was in my last 45 days or so of my ETS. That’s when I knew things were serious at home with my terminally ill dad. My LT handled the paperwork. And yeah, same guy still.)
Nah, I wouldn’t either. Just impeach the asshole and throw his/her ass out the door.
And a coup? No, but secession sounds tempting sometimes.
Worked well the first time.
No secession.
We’re better off sticking together, despite our disagreements and petty squabbles. We are, after all, Americans, not Yankees and Confederates.
We keep it in one piece, period. Maybe buy some more land across the Rio Grande and north of the US-CAN border, so that there’s more continental continuity. Just an idea. And we should put a base on the moon, while we’re at it.
Only if we name it Space Dakota.
Only if we name it Space Dakota!
Oh, I like that idea.
Lunar Base Space Dakota! Thank you, Clong. I want to borrow that, if I may.
You can say that again.
Haha sorry I don’t know why it doubled my post.
It doubled your post because there would have to be a North and South Space Dakota!
Could we just kick California out?
Not the whole state, just 4 or 5 particular counties.
And the People’s Republic of Prince Georges County in MD
Is there a situation where I might support a coup?!?
What, like if some hypothetical moronic government was about to surrender the nation to the forces of the Islamic State??? Well then yeah.
Oh, and of course the public thinks that members of the military want what is best for the country compared to the political class. After all, the military has shown a willingness to sacrifice for the good of the nation, whereas the political class has shown that all too often that they primarily are interested in protecting their phony baloney jobs (and the interests of the donor class).
It would be interesting to read the (slanted) questions they asked, to see the results they got.
Figures never lie, but liars always figure.
Is there a situation whereby I might support a military coup? Possibly. “Suppose” me your scenarios, and I’ll give you a Yes or No answer, and my best reasoning why.

So when do you plan to put your volume of philosophical quotes together?
You’re almost making Diogenes look like a piker, Jonn.
Google “The Origins of the Military Coup of 202”
Interesting read.
Scary actually
A military coup is a Hollywood fantasy (re: Seven Days In May) in America of the US (thank you Sorta Marge). The oath to support an defend the Constitution means more to us than it does to the curr3ent CinC and a whole gaggle of politicians of all stripes.
Always good to have additional evidence that 1/3d of your fellow citizens are idiots.
In other news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
Sí
Well it’s Obvious 1/3 of the U.S. population has never been anywhere, and lived under a Dictatorship..
Seriously……. WTF… is wrong with people now days
That should be ‘and/or lived under a dictatorship’. Fixed it for you.
What is wrong with people? How long have you got?
They think it’s okay to go hiking in an area with an unmarked border between Iran and Iraq, and wonder why they end up in prison. They haven’t lived in North Korea, but they should.
You’re right – they’ve never been anywhere at all. That’s the best I can do.
THANK YOU PH 🙂
I clicked over to the article, and apparently, I read it differently than Jonn (and apparently the headline writer) did.
Though the headline included the word “Coup,” the question was “Is there any situation in which you could imagine yourself supporting the U.S. Military taking over the powers of the federal government?”
I can imagine several scenarios in which I would support that, but that don’t constitute what I’d consider a coupe. Those respondents who answered “No” suffer from a lack of imagination.
This is why I rarely trust any “poll” results. I need to know what was asked, who asked it, how it was asked, when it was asked and to whom in order to make any sense of it.
Unless, of course, I agree with the results. Then I’ll take them as gospel.
Edit: “… but that doesn’t constitute what I’d consider a coup.”
BTW, I’m not a big fan of coupes either.
Why are we sending the same idiots back?
Cause “free shit”, that’s why!
“The funny thing is that if we mistrust politicians so much, why aren’t we electing better people to office instead of sending back the same selfish dorks year-after-year?”
Not to worry, the coup will take care of that. The sheeple will do what the sheeple are told to do and put up with whatever is doled out. In other words, nothing will change. The only difference will be that we won’t get to elect the assholes in charge.
A coup? FUCK NO. An action taken to restore Constitutional government in keeping with the Oath? Yes. Those are two different things.
Here’s a problem I have, though. The unfailing trust in the integrity of senior military officers fails to account for the fascist shitwads like (master) Bateman and Wesley Clark, as well as the other flavors of shitwad who have also sucked their way into the five-sided asylum.
Can you imagine if there were a group of people who could declare up to be down and down to be up and everyone would have to obey them, people who were neither elected nor subject to a term life? In fact, they could serve for life! We could call them the Supreme Court. Yeah, no one would go for that. I withdraw the suggestion.
“term life”…term limitation
We keep electing them because we somehow believe our lying sack of shit who’s never actually done what we asked is better than the other side’s lying sack of shit.
We never stop to realize that we are getting exactly what our betters want us to get, a divisive electorate so bitterly engaged with each other we are too stupid and blinded to see where the real issues lie.
If we all went to the polls and voted out the incumbents, regardless of party and did the same the next election and the next until we only had people who listened to the electorate we’d be just fine.
But we won’t ever do that because too many of us believe both parties bullshit and are too stupid to think about perhaps casting a vote for someone with a D instead of an R or vice versa because somehow that would be winning or losing and heaven forbid we stop worrying about winning or losing and just focusing on living with each other regardless of some stupid fucking letter that actually only represents the top economic tier and ignores most of us in the nation.
Meh-I think both the place (D.C.) and the process have a corrupting influence. Elected representatives get inside the beltway and the world starts to look like a different place to them. They start to listen to the chattering classes there and they hear primarily from the wide variety of interest groups that have offices there who use every trick to influence them. At the same time, it is too easy for them to use the machinery of government to buy support. Deal out the dosh and declare that your opponent is a crazy radical who means to put granny out on the street and you’ll coast to re-election, I hate big government because it corrupts both the polity and the populace, but “moar free stuff” is usually a sure vote getter.
Coup–hell no. I want to enjoy what few civil liberties I still have, thank you. Civilian revolution–might be more fun to watch, but still no. Maybe 1/3 of Americans are just idiots. None of them have an end-state or a new constitution in their back pocket, they don’t like ‘something’ and want to see Rome burn.
All a revolution will do is destroy all the legal and procedural barriers that are slow-rolling America’s descent into one of the many ‘somethings’ that this 1/3 is crying about.
Wake me up with 1/3 of America wants the same revolution.
“Maybe 1/3 of Americans are just idiots.” If you make that voting Americans, then you are well underestimating the stupidity of the American voters.
given the last two elections and who the current front-runners are, I think that 1/3 is a gross underestimation.
Why don’t we elect better people? How many of the better people want to go through the gauntlet of BS, ass-kissing, fellating donors, etc. that is required to GET elected. And assuming you do that – look at the other elected people and realize you have to work with them? No no no no no….. not happenin’.
Electing the same clown for a second term as President also proves your point 2/17. Once was bad enough, but twice?
All I want are a few test questions. No one who fails gets to vote. That’s all. Nothing difficult. No one has to know that Germany bombed Pearl Harbor to start the Civil War. Just a few simple questions. I’ll be happy to pen them.
Add to (or subtract from) that: people who are on any kind of welfare or entitlements; and people who are renting instead of buying (that might be offset if they are local area business owners). These people have a vested interest in keeping the current style of pocket picking high taxes entitlement handouts Gooberment – vice- the home/ business owning non-welfare/entitlement citizen pulling his/her own weight and contributing to their own support as opposed to being a drag on the system.
Just curious AS TO where you get the idea that people who rent their living space are automatically on welfare and not working or paying taxes?
I rented apartments for 3 decades because it more affordable than owning a home, especially with the rate of property taxes in the city of Chicago.
I have never been on welfare, nor am I a layabout, which you seem to apply to anyone who rents living space instead of owning it. There are plenty of people working now who prefer to NOT own property while they are working, but living in apartments instead. Rent in Chicago apartments is not cheap by any means, never mind other cities.
So just where do you get off labeling renters as lazy scum who contribute nothing? That is completely not true.
SNAP! You go girl!
“Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”.
What movie, year, what state was it filmed in and how was the movie financed?
1000 dollars for the first correct answer(s)!
Go …
Animal House?
Yes … No money award for you!
Need full and complete answer.
While I wouldn’t support a coup, I would support an amendment to the constitution giving the right to slap the stupid out of deserving individuals.
Well said!
There is zero wiggle room here for those playing the home version of “US Constitution 101”.
The mere contemplation of a MIL coup (or coupe for the French in the room), is grounds for serious ass kicking from the likes of me and all others who swore to ensure the preservation of the Constitution.
I am not onboard with any notion of a coup and I suspect anyone with at least an 1/8 of a brain would not be either!
Seems to my the poll was slapped togther by a bunch of drunk monkeys (pizza, beer, video games and energy drinks are a bad mixture) who were mistakenly hired as legitamate pollsters!
I say HELL NO to a coup d’etat and YES to getting people informed enough to throw the current gang of clowns the hell out of power, but alas, “Maybe 1/3 of Americans are just idiots.” is a very credible hypothesis, just look at the current POTUS who was reelected! Another statistic is that 1 out of every three Hitlery supporters is just as idiotic as the other two.
You likely heard this story before but it’s worth hearing again. As Ben Franklin made his way from the Constitutional Convention, he was asked by a citizen exactly what sort of government he and the other delegates had created. His answer? “A republic, if you can keep it.”
You see, it’s all about the Constitution. Learn all you can about it. Despite the Supreme Court and the other branches doing damage to its provisions, it remains the most magnificent document in the world.
“You want the truth about a coop?”
Son, we live in a world where chickens are housed in flimsy wooden huts, are given little water to drink and are fed excess corn.
These chickens are expected to feed our nation! If not the chickens, who is going to do it … You?
You complain about a possible bad coop, contemplate a world without eggs, southern fried wonders and chicken breasts lightly sauteed in olive oil and mushrooms, yet you loath the way chickens live!
I neither have the time nor inclination to entertain your concerns about a coop.
I would much rather you order up a 10 piece chicken McNugget, say thank you to the career fast food worker and be on your little merry friggin’ way.
Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think about a chicken coop!”

Now if everyone will just take a breath of fresh air and sit your ass down and pay attention to somebody that’s been around, I’ll tell you all the best way to solve this problem, and no one get hurt.
Elect DONALD TRUMP To office come election day. End of conversation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Say What????????????????
Where the tall corn grows
GOOD NIGHT IRENE, I’ll see you in my dreams
