Army’s social media policy

| August 1, 2015

We got a copy of the letter from the Army’s ALARACT policy letter that we talked about the other day. It’s entitled “PROFESSIONALIZATION OF ONLINE CONDUCT” and it applies to active duty members, Reservists, Department of the Army civilians and family members (which means if your spouse can’t behave themselves on Facebook, you’re going to pay a price at work).

WHEN USING ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES, MEMBERS OF THE ARMY TEAM SHOULD APPLY “THINK, TYPE, POST”: “THINK” ABOUT THE MESSAGE BEING COMMUNICATED AND WHO COULD POTENTIALLY VIEW IT; “TYPE” A COMMUNICATION THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH ARMY VALUES; AND “POST” ONLY THOSE MESSAGES THAT DEMONSTRATE DIGNITY AND RESPECT FOR SELF AND OTHERS.

I do that every time I post, so it’s perfectly reasonable.

PERSONNEL EXPERIENCING OR WITNESSING ONLINE MISCONDUCT SHOULD PROMPTLY REPORT MATTERS TO THE CHAIN OF COMMAND/SUPERVISION.
ALTERNATIVE AVENUES FOR REPORTING AND INFORMATION INCLUDE: FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES, EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY, SEXUAL HARASSMENT/ASSAULT RESPONSE AND PREVENTION, THE INSPECTOR GENERAL, AND ARMY LAW ENFORCEMENT

Yeah, I’d start at the lowest level and not lobby for an ARCOM at DoD if I ran into some sort of behavior that offended me, you know, if I couldn’t just click away from it.

But here’s the whole policy letter if you missed it (I put it order now);

Yeah! Another thing for the harpies in the FSGs to get worked up about and apply their assumed authority!

D

It’s interesting that the author used “Family Support” when it’s been known as Family Readiness for about 15 years or so if I recall correctly.

desert

“Army Values”??? I didn’t know they had any? I thought the brass’ main function was to see that obamas ass was sufficiently kissed?

I can understand ensuring actual Service Members don’t get stupid, but I don’t see what authority they think they have over spouses and children. They didn’t swear any oath that applies and they are not getting paid by DoD (BAH is paid to the service member, not the spouse. It is based on Service Member location not spouse location.

It’s that “thought police” mentality… your spouse/kids posted it, therefore you’re guilty. You know, one individual is a fuck up, everyone gets punished for the fuck ups actions.

Some genius (Larry Stubblefield maybe?) believes that Soldiers can’t be trusted to make “adult” decisions

MustangCryppie

At least we’re not like North Korea which, if you fuck up, sends your entire family to the Gulag with you.

Yet.

Ex-PH2

I see the Thought Patrol is at it, eh?

On the surface, that’s reasonable and should automatically be done. For example, people simply don’t do things like threaten the lives of elected official’s and such.

But, with the Army’s following the Air Force and the Navy in the panzification of the military program, those interpretations would be loosely made.

Many among the millennials consider old school leadership as “hostile/toxic.” For some, simply being told something that they didn’t want to hear, or being held accountable, or being required to at least what’s expected, could be construed as advancing hostile/harrassing communication.

For example, I had told a Soldier that the information that this Soldier provided was in error. All I used was verbal information that this Soldier provided me. I verified this information with another person known in this community, and it turned out that this Soldier’s information was in error. The events that happened next made it seem like I had just stepped into the Twilight Zone, wrong became “right” and right was very “wrong”.

Heck, the military leadership styles that were around two decades ago would be accused of “lacking tact.” 🙄

Folks, this is just one more step forward towards the Army’s plan to field Panzi Divisions. The issues that the ALARACT addresses contributed to part of the reason for my using usernames like the one that I’m using here, and specific Facebook profiles to address official military pages, which happen to not be my personal account.

I knew that this was going to be an issue.

The very statements that I’ve made here could be twisted to make it seem like I’m violating that ALARACT. We’ve lost count of how many phonies made things up to try to paint us into a bad light. There are people in the military, my unit included, who’d take the DRC seriously and administer administrative sanctions service members that say things here against exposed posers/fakers/phonies.

The lure is simply getting stronger:

Since when is the truth invalid?

Exposing people who lie about their service, or ever having served, or stealing someone else’s identity should never be tolerated, nor should the fraud exposed when SV perps are taken to task.

GDContractor

If you think about it, now more than ever, the Army has a heightened interest in determining if someone is fake or genuine. They can’t enforce their new policy against posers, so step 1 will be to establish authenticity.

nbcguy54ACTUAL

How are they going to authenticate transgender servicemembers?

GDContractor

Sheep are easier to manage than wolves.

The mission is secondary to “ease of management” according to ineffective leaders who are too lazy to lead and too stupid to know how.

That’s just my opinion based on what I saw on the contracting side. Boat rockers are a liability, regardless of the assets they bring to the table.

They want groupthink while they preach diversity, and they have are oblivious to the irony.

rb325th

Does this mean I can get an ARCOM?

sapper3307

Bitches love ARCOMS!

rb325th

I am not sure I could ever go bitch to my chain of command or higher about some bullshit on the internet. So glad I have a DD214 (and not a forged one either…)

Sparks

sapper3307…You got that right. I mean in the dimly lit bars, it ain’t the Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts or even MoHs that turn the girl’s heads. It the Big Ass ARCOM! You have one of those and they’ll be buying your drinks all night and fighting with each other to see who takes you home! If you have 2…well shit, it’s a dead on sure thing you’re gettin’ laid.

Sparks

Damn it rb325th, you beat me to it! I was just going to say the award of ARCOMs are gonna go through the roof on this one!

Cranky Old MSG

Ummm, good luck enforcing that on ARNG members, who don’t fall under the UCMJ unless federalized.

Eric

The left off:

Report to…….OR 1SG Moerk.

This is just another “we’re doing something!” message. This says nothing that wasn’t already applicable, with one exception. If you say in a common area that your commander is a dickhead and the “wrong” person overhears it, you’ll get slammed. If you do it on facebook and the “wrong” person reads it, you get slammed. No difference.

In regards to dependents, if they “act” inappropriately on an installation, they can be barred from the installation by the garrison commander. (i.e., kids shoplifting at the PX.)

However, if they’re going to judge how family members act online, they should hold them accountable for how they act in person as well. That means all the dependents of high ranking service members who think they wear their husband/wife’s rank and try to order Soldiers around as if they do, should be held accountable for disrespecting personnel actually getting a paycheck. That will never happen though because some of those higher ranking people are too chickenshit to keep their dependents in check.

Let the witch-hunting begin. I believe there is a PV-8 that would be perfect as the NCOIC of that witch-hunting brigade.

But what do I know, I’m just a dumb NCO with my DD214…

I can well understand prohibiting people in any organization, military or civilian, from using the organization’s time and equipment in non-business pursuits. (That excludes Marines who wear part of their uniform in a gay porn movie and members of all branches who march in gay-pride parades, of course.) But this widening circle of speech suppression extending to one’s own expression using one’s own pc/mac, smart phone, tablet, or what have you, is quite onerous. The strained verbiage of the policy purports, in at least one instance, to extend to nonmembers of the organization and those not under contract to the organization. This is dangerous stuff. The Army can shove it up its ass. And I mean that with all DUE respect.

Ex-PH2

I agree with everything you said, as long as you substitute Navy for Army.

Eric

“I can well understand prohibiting people in any organization, military or civilian, from using the organization’s time and equipment in non-business pursuits.”

The ironic thing here is that since about 2012, you can get to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., from Official Army computers on the Army network. Since then, I’d say that maybe about 10% of the activity on social media from official computers is for the “unit page” or for “military communication” functions.

When I was in, at most I’d use my official FB page to update the official unit page, adding photos or whatever, then log back out. If I have/had a personal account on FB that wasn’t affiliated with the Army isn’t and wasn’t the Army’s business, so I never would’ve used it on an Army computer, but there are plenty who will.

“What a clusterfuck.”

“What did you say?”

“What?”

“What did you just say?”

“When?”

“Just now.”

“I said what.”

“No, before that.”

“Huh?”

“You said something about a clusterfuck.”

“No.”

“Yes! You said ‘What a clusterfuck!'”

“Lieutenant!!”

“Yes, sir?”

“I just heard you say something lacking dignity and respect.”

“But, sir, I was merely repeating….”

“Write yourself up.”

“Yes sir.”

I read the good morning stories without a cup of coffee and had a clean bedspread. I read your post and spit coffee on my PJ’s and dropped the cup trying to clean up with a cast on my hand. There goes another $25. Crew is right. Sitting on the floor like a dog and he has a recliner?

Reb

2/17 Air Cav,
Because of your post I had to use my new stun gun after a young fella offered to help me with the bedspread I dropped and spit coffee on. THANK YOU. I WILL DEDICATE THE VIDEO from the dry cleaning store to you once the trial is over. Jonn please hide my face and any identifying information about my location. What a blessed morning ?

“MEMBERS OF THE ARMY TEAM SHOULD APPLY “THINK, TYPE, POST”: “THINK” ABOUT THE MESSAGE BEING COMMUNICATED”

When I was an XO, I had occasion to answer my CO’s phone. As I sat in his chair chatting with whoever, I noticed that he had taped a note to the back of desk nameplate.

“Engage Brain Before Opening Mouth!”

Eric

We had an SJA give a bunch of us Cdrs, CSMs and 1SGs a briefing once about issues popping up in email traffic a few years ago.

He called the issue F3U emails. Fire and Forget, Fuck You emails. I thought it was fairly catchy.

Twist

Thank goodness that I’m wearing my DD214 body armour.

A Proud Infidel®™

I wonder how many candyassed cream puff-headed self-commissioned PC Thought Police/SJW’s are already drooling while they think of what kind of shit they can start now? FUCK POLITICAL CORRECTNESS TO DEATH SIDEWAYS with diarrhea-soaked broken glass and asbestos!

AW1Ed

I have my DD-214 as well, but work as a civilian for the Department of the Navy, who, sure as God makes little green apples, will fall all over themselves implementing this Army “initiative.”

Data Dawg DV X

Free speech at a premium price these days. I heard that during world War two, you could be disciplined for referring to FDR as a son of a bitch and challenging what FDR was doing. Kinda what certain individuals who eat a lot of canapés in the white house and the Pentagon would love to do instead of fixing the problems with the military and the brass getting only wrist slaps while nco and other ranks get screwed several different ways.

A Proud Infidel®™

Canapés? I’ve heard that Capitol Hill and the Five-sided Asylum are FULL OF Quiche-eaters as well!

Data Dawg DV X

You’re probably right. After all, canapes and quiche are the food of the diplomatic and the privileged bitches corps.

FatCircles0311

Now 1st sgt is going to micromanage your facebook account postings and if you offend any snowflake online prepare your anus at the company office @ 0600 the next day!

lol US military is absolutely bonkers.

Speech police are here.

Twist

Liberals would love to bring back the old Sedition Act, but only as long as the President has a D after his/her name.

Derek

Call me naive (because I probably am) but what in the flying fuck is this about? If I go to work Monday and open my civilian email with an alaract waiting for me, how the fuck is what my wife does on her time have anything to do with Army controlling it or penalizing me? Since when did we move to East Germany circa 1950?

A Proud Infidel®™

It looks like the US Military is about to be infected with a bunch of ARCOM-lusting SJW’s commissioning themselves as PC Cyber-Stasi!

Derek

Komme herre schnell; vas ist das herre?

Niene haben mein papers Herr Goebbels!

Shit like this makes me glad I’m out. My online presence can be as vocal as I want it to be with no retribution. 8)

nbcguy54ACTUAL

I’m actually surprised that it’s taken this long to start locking things down.

Anyone remember that special female who posted selfies of her hiding in her car during Retreat?

And those studs on funeral detail with their pics?

Silent insolence is one thing, even talking shit amongst buddies is generally accepted. But in the age where everything is taken out of context, popped up on Fox news within minutes, and outward public disrespect is the new normal, I’m not surprised by any of this. I won’t even start to address the possible OPSEC issues this could also help curtail…

The Force has brought this onto themselves and it’s time to pay in the usual fashion – overreaction and mass punishment.

Let’s not all act surprised.
