Happy 90th, Mr. B
Today is the 90th birthday of a gentleman named Lawrence Peter Berra. He’s still with us.
If the name doesn’t ring a bell – maybe that’s because most people know him by his nickname vice his given name. That nickname? “Yogi”.
Berra’s baseball career really needs no rehashing among baseball fans. He’s a in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and is among the most recognizable and well-known people ever to play the sport. But ESPN has a short article today with some of Berra’s (alleged) quotes, quotes about him, and a brief career highlight or two. It’s worth a look IMO.
Oh, and yes: Berra is also a vet. He served in the Navy as a gunner’s mate during World War II. He was one of the crew of the USS Bayfield during D-Day.
Happy 90th, Mr. Berra. Here’s to many more.

It’s said he was fond of cold cuts.

let me guess, the author of the linked article is a Red Sox fan.
Happy birthday, Mr. Berra!
15 World Series rings (combined as a player and coach), sure he was on a lot of great teams-but he contributed a lot of greatness to those teams himself.
Quirks or not, the man seems to have been doing something right, life wise. He was married to his wife Carmen in January 1949 – when he was 23.
They were married in excess of 65 years. She passed away last March.
A man in a (very great) class all his own. Baseball’s best ambassador and a great player.
An unforgettable legend.
Here’s a true Berra quote and one you won’t see in a collection of Berra quotes: “I tell the kids, somebody’s gotta win, somebody’s gotta lose. Just don’t fight about it. Just try to get better.”
Let’ not forget the classics….
“Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical.” – Yogi Berra
Yogi Berra giving directions to get to his home; “When you get to the fork in the road take it”
Back in the day, baseball was my life. It spanned from the time I was ten up to twenty-four. Baseball and the Army shaped me into the person I am today.
Following the death of my wife, this site and baseball have been my lifeline. Without them I think I would be in worse shape than I am!
Today is one of those shit days, really low! My choices are: get drunk or workout. Have not made my choice yet. I know the right one, still have not decided!
I covered college baseball as a sportswriter for a couple of years, and remember a perfect Spring day. I’m sitting in the stands with a notebook, there’s the smell of cut grass, and from time to time that weird *plonk* a baseball makes coming off an aluminum bat. Back and forth in front of the stands would sometimes pass groups of co-eds in shorts and halter tops.
It suddenly dawned on me that it was a remarkable thing that somebody would pay actual money for me to be doing what I was doing.
The game itself ended up being nothing special. Mot that it mattered, sometimes baseball isn’t about just baseball.
Happy Birthday to a great man… a real ambassador of the game.
I was watching a documentary on Netflix about Yogi in January, with Bob Costas. If you’ve got the time, 1 hour, even my wife sat down after the first 5 minutes. He’s worth it.
Should have said the title: “Yogi Berra – American Sports Legend”
