“If At First You Don’t Succeed, . . .

| April 10, 2015

. . . try, try again”. We’ve all heard that old proverb. But it seems that one guy really took it to heart.

Sixteen years ago, Larry Hewett (who at the time used the name Larry Duncan) and an accomplice robbed a bank in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. They initially got away, but later were caught. Hewett was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 70 months in prison.

Hewett did his time.  But as you might guess, he was hardly “rehabilitated” to become a productive member of society.

Yesterday a Federal grand jury indicted Hewett for being the gunman in another, more recent bank robbery – one that occurred last November. He’s also facing Federal charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Would you believe me if I told you that it was the same bank he’d robbed 16 years ago?  Well . . . yeah, it was.

I’m not joking.

To quote that wise sage and philosopher, Homer Simpson, “D’OH!”
You can’t make this stuff up. No one would believe you.

It’s readily apparent that Larry didn’t get a toaster or a set of steak knives when he made the first withdrawal.

I guess he learned from his first stint in lock-up that Bubba and Thor expect a dowry and he wanted to make things right.

Welcome back. It’s salad tossing time.

Well, he is a determined fellow, isn’t he?

With some of these guys it seems they become so institutionalized they are not capable of acting independently in a modern society. Consequently they choose to break their parole, or re-offend to enter the system again and continue the life they understand.

We don’t rehabilitate we train predators and train prisoners to be prisoners…with the rise in gang influence and corruption in the prison system and the failed privatization of the prison industry we are a nation that is encountering a massive failure of our prison system to generate any positive outcomes for those individuals that we intend to place back into society.

Regardless of my personal thought that any violent offender be killed and buried after harvesting their organs the reality is that we intend to release a great many of these predators back into the general public.

If that is the intent we had better come up with a prison system more inclined to produce a positive outcome rather than increase the crime rate along with the recidivism rate.

So far, our prison system’s success rate at reintegration has been a mirror of the success of our wars on drugs, poverty, and terror.

All of which are massive fucking failures. Instead of each administration trying to blame the last guy or the next guy or someone on the other side of the aisle it would be quite refreshing to see someone actually step up to the plate and say, “Here’s we are in this massive clusterfuck and here’s a plan to reduce the level of fucked proportionately over the next 4-8 years and stabilize these efforts.

None of the candidates running so far appear willing or capable of doing so, and I suspect none will so we will continue down a path of stupidity aided by the fucking idiots who keep pulling party levers without demand for substantive change.

We are getting exactly what we deserve for being lazy, apathetic assholes who worry more about Kim Kardashian’s ass than our children’s futures.
