Phony Vietnam vet John Spodofora back in the news

| February 15, 2015

One of our readers, Earl Galloway, has been making trouble for the Republican mayor of Stafford, New Jersey, John Spodofora, this week. Before TAH was around, Spodofora told constituents that he was a Navy secret squirrel in Vietnam. The mayor was forced to concede that he’d been telling stories when the media got around to asking him that if everything was so classified, why was he talking about it?

When we published his records, he jumped back on the classified pony and said that his Congressman would have to get his records declassified – of course, that’s not how that stuff happens. So, Earl Galloway joined the Stafford Republican Club in an effort to prevent Spodofora from seeking another term in office;

“Out of 59 people who were trying to be accepted into the club Monday night, I was singled out of that group for retribution, for having called out the mayor in the past,” Galloway said. “And they know I still have serious concerns about how the mayor continues to represent himself, his obvious exaggerations and bald-faced lies.”

Galloway said that although Spodofora retracted his Vietnam War claims in March 2012 and apologized to the public, he and his political surrogates have made other public statements since then in an effort to retroactively parse the retraction. Their intent is to leave some doubt that he could have served in the Vietnam theater of operations in some clandestine role for the Navy, he said.

For example, Spodofora has suggested that former U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan, R-N.J., was able to get “special access” to classifed Pentagon records that corroborate past statements the mayor made before his mea culpa. But at the time, Runyan’s office denied such a claim, Galloway pointed out.

Here is Spodofora’s FOIA that we got three years ago;

Spodafora FOIA1

Notice that there are no Vietnam service medals – that’s because he was never anywhere near Vietnam, despite his claims to the contrary.

Spodofora Assignments

Oddly enough;

The mayor and council had just unanimously adopted a resolution in support of pending state legislation that would make stolen valor a crime in New Jersey, with each count punishable by a minimum $1,000 fine. Under the bill, stolen valor is defined as the misrepresentation of oneself as a veteran or current service member, or for false statements in which a person claims to be a recipient of a decoration or medal of the United States armed forces, for the purpose of obtaining money, property or other tangible benefit.

Oh, great! He was a CT. What an embarrassment to my community.

Jorge

Yep, CTM2. Looks like he rode a boat in the Med, got a Navy Expeditionary Medal, and uses that to claim that he was boots on the ground in Vietnam. Both you and I know that they hand those out like candy for DIRSUP missions, but he just will not let go.

RM3(SS)

He was an “M” brancher, which means maintenance. He repaired all the spooky gear. Kind of like “Q” from the James Bond movies but not as cool. Yep, legit for sure. /sarc

Jorge

Yup. He was a legit M-brancher and I have the greatest respect for those guys. Back then it was even better; some real skill was needed to make sure that stuff ran well.

CTIC(SS) (Ret) 🙂

RM3(SS)

I hear ya Jorge, I was a legit KW7/KWR37 repairman in addition to teletype repairman 1971-75, got the NEC’s to prove it. We did actual repairs not just board swapping. But I kept my ass on the boat and never claimed sekeret squirrel status.

RM3(SS)

Oh and I see you were an “I” brancher, Chief. говорить русский? 或者說中國人嗎?

Silentium Est Aureum

As a “rider”, wouldn’t there be anything in his service record showing WHICH boat he rode? It’s entirely possible he didn’t even ride the boats he worked on, cause in the other threads, he didn’t even rate a NUC.

Silentium Est Aureum

Doesn’t even look like he rated an Expeditionary Medal, according to his FOIA. Just a NDSM and GCM.

MustangCryppie…Thank you. I was just about to ask the community what a CTM2 is. Navy jargon…I’ll never get it.

Ex-PH2

Wait – Spodofora signed something supporting SV but still wants to claim his own SV? And he’s picking on Galloway at the same time?

Geezo pete, he’s truly becoming a whack job.

HMCS(FMF) ret.

Nah, he’s one of those “professional politicians”… he knows what’s best for all of us. He and/or his lackeys still rock the lie when it’s “convenient”, like in the run up to the next election.

Must have been something in the water or air when he got out of the Navy as a PO2, just like another PO2 that loves to embellish his service.

Ex-PH2

At least I have pictures that prove I sat on my behind most of the war.

Mustang1LT

Uh, I think he’s referring to a top-notch dog rescue pilot and phony CPO we all know and love!

HMCS(FMF) ret.

Never meant to disrespect you Ex-PH2… you’re one of the best! It’s the 0.1% (Spodofora, Bernath, Dullass, Visconi, etc.) that have served and consciously decided to run with their Stolen Valor claims that I despise the most.

Sparks

Ex-PH2…So you caught that too m’lady? I was thinking, so what’s he to do now? Cling to the secret bullshit to stay in office and try to avoid prosecution or resign for “personal family reasons”. Since he’s become so high profile I am sure there is a local prosecutor wetting his lips for this legislation to pass. He probably already has all of this clowns records from the FOIA and public statements and a boiler plate indictment typed up. I can only hope.

OWB

We could hardly expect the liar to say, “No I can’t support this stolen valor bill because I’m a lying valor thief myself.” Evidently, the lying valor thief version of fractured honor requires that they stick to the lie in spite of all evidence to the contrary.

NavyE9r

Spodofora like all the others are the EXACT reason why we need stronger laws. He does not have the guts to tell the truth when he’s been caught because history as shown he just lies more and more. Watch he’ll play the poor victim role in that I admitted that I lied already, why is everyone picking on me. Well miscreant you lied for a second time….

Sparks

NavyE9r…Correct Sir. Since he’s rocked this big time lie for so long, what else has he lied his ass off about?

Poetrooper

This is for David Webb who chastised us for not being tough enough on Joni Ernst because she was one of “ours.” I will wager, David, that most of the regulars here will condemn this jerk regardless of his Republican affiliation. Of course, that is taking into account that a New Jersey Republican is about two shades left of a Texas Democrat.

I most certainly do condemn his despicable behavior and believe he’d make a good example case for prosecution of the Stolen Valor Act. Regrettably, his political cronies will never let that happen.

OK, David, you happy now?

David Webb, CAPT

Actually the comments here at TAH were mostly identical to my view (in that she is a “combat veteran”). I am opposed to two former Special Forces soldiers (specifically Don Pugsley and Eron Lindsey) embellishing her actions for that time. Politics (and in these cases, what staff members and associates further support) doesn’t matter one bit to me if I feel it is a misrepresentation.

I do hope the irony in this case does bite Spodofora in the butt, just as I hope all the lies that Brian Williams told permanently retires him as a “newsman”. More publicity is going to bring our cause into the public eye, and will show how to determine the falsehoods better. Less than two months ago I turned in an associate to Senior Chief Shipley, I didn’t look close enough at the embellishments (he served honorably in the Navy) he told me (and others, with some material online) until Don and Diane schooled me how to find it.

I took other content at a higher level when I was believing his lies, but it wasn’t just a matter of deceiving me. His politics or friendship didn’t matter to me, but I did try to make him realize why I thought his behavior was wrong. Don’t be so quick to try to label me as being political, misrepresentation is misrepresentation.

Poetrooper

David. I am not trying to label you as political; rather I am trying to demonstrate to you that WE are not as well. A phony is a phony is a phony and to protect one for his politics is nothing but baloney.

There, now you know why my nom de web is Poetrooper.

Seriously, I think we all got your point but we just weren’t as disturbed about it as you appear to be because it was not the colonel making the claim but rather campaign workers. I agree that if they were campaign workers with military backgrounds they should be chastised but exactly how would Ernst go about that in such a manner as to satisfy you? If she publicly rebukes them she leaves herself wide open for the lurking mainstream media to gleefully report about the widespread dissension in the Ernst campaign or some other such crap helpful to her Democrat opponent. Look, common sense will tell you that it was her farm girl upbringing and down home appeal that got her the votes, not her military record. Iowa has neither military installations nor a particularly large veterans community and she was elected by Iowa voters and no others.

As I stated previously, I’m not about to hold the colonel to the impossible standard of being able to control everything being said “about” her. Said “by” her? You bet; we’d hold her feet to the fire if she started spouting SV crap like this Jersey worm, but she didn’t.

Now will that satisfy you?

NavyE9r

Comments on here are great! But what really needs to be done is comment on the article so the press can see that this is a National epidemic we are fighting. Please take the time to comment there. http://www.app.com/story/news/local/ocean-county/2015/02/13/stafford-mayors-stolen-valor-problem/23390119/

NavyE9r…Thank you again Sir for the link. I intend to post my comments.

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

OMG … This Jerzee guy again.

BLUF: he was not so secret, he was an average or less than that Sailor, seemed to have a wee bit of trouble making PO1, I have reviewed more than my fair share of records having been a voting member on 4 US Navy E-8/9 Selection Boards, not impressed.

I guess being so high speed and secret, all his personal and unit awards were, while sealed, burned in the great records fire of 1970 whatever year it was!

Having said that, this Spittoon guy (or whatever his name is) should remain in our collective cross hairs til such time as uncover those classified records. Meaning forever!

HMCS(FMF) ret.

I always thought is was pronounced “JOYZEE”?

NAVCWORet

So, he spent his entire career in Groton, CT, Puerto Rico and Galeta Island, Panama (CZ=Canal Zone). Panama would have been as close to that side OF THE WORLD that he got to, much less IN COUNTRY.

Makes me weep for my brother CTs who have REALLY put themselves in harms way.

NavyE9r

What he did was set up a Korean war veteran to deliver the message where he was awarded a Navy Expeditionary Medal just prior to the election as the “Smoking Gun”. Superstorm Sandy hit and washed the story away. Guess who gave him his speaking points…

Sparks

NavyE9r…I loved it when the old timer stopped to ask what had been written for him regarding the Expeditionary Medal. If the guy had written this himself, he would have known what he wrote and would have not needed to ask the “author” to explain it to him. The old guy got played big time by a phoney, self serving POS.

Green Thumb

Turd.

Green Thumb

All joking aside, this shitbag has a lot in common with Commander Phil Monkress at All-Points Logistics.

Although this turd does not secure contracts based on his bullshit claims, he obtained office. And the way he blames others yet still leaves the door open to push his claims, you know “people are spreading rumors about me however some of them are true” type bullshit.

They are definitely turds in the same bowl.

Hack Stone

But the question still remains; Is he All Points Logistics material?

How is Phildo do these days? He probably has a stack of $40,000 checks that he has been meaning to send to Paul, but with the court ordered community service for the DUI, he hasn’t had the chance to drop them in the mailbox.

#BringElaineRicciHome

Green Thumb

Tough to say.

He and his senior staff (who do not know him) refuse to answer any questions.

They are, in a word, poser supporters.

Silentium Est Aureum

Okay, so if in fact this gent did in fact rate a NUC and Expeditionary Medal, where’s the 215 showing he did in fact rate it, and that it had been awarded?

ohio

CT, it figures. This scumbag and the scumbag Blumenthal. Lie and rarely get called on it, then they lie again to get out of it. Something in the water or air in CT. Yankees.
