Darryl Lee Wright charged with scamming government
From Washington State comes the story of Darryl Lee Wright who scammed the US government out of more than a $1/4 million for a phony injury from a time when he was in Iraq with the Idaho National Guard.
Apparently, he heard a boom once in Iraq and parlayed that into a CAB and a Purple Heart and then when he got home he started hitting the government up for some free money claiming that he had trouble walking, couldn’t tie his own shoes and lost interest in stuff, you know, even though he’s the chairman of the planning commission in Snoqualmie, a former City Council candidate, a high school basketball coach and a rec league basketball player. His sister is also charged with receiving payments as his caregiver.
Prosecutors alleged that the scheme dated to 2005, when there was a small explosion about 100 yards from where Wright and other soldiers were standing. Days later, Wright requested that he be awarded a “combat action badge,” though he noted in his written account that there was no damage or casualties from the blast.
Over the next several months he continued to press for the badge – changing the story to say that he had come under enemy rocket attack, prosecutors said.
“Darryl Lee Wright falsely stated that he was ‘violently thrown and knocked unconscious from the percussion of the rockets’ impact,'” the indictment said.
In supporting documentation, Wright submitted a picture of a destroyed military vehicle with a handwritten note saying it was his – even though the vehicle had nothing to do with the event in question, the indictment said.
The Army eventually did award the combat action badge and, in 2011 gave him a Purple Heart at his request, signifying that he had been wounded by an enemy in combat.
So he used that badge and the Purple Heart to start milking the system. Do I need to mention how he damaged the reputation of the CAB with this story? Actually, they should have locked him up just based on his name – there’s like a million mugshots of people named Darryl Lee Wright in the search engines.

So he got a PH just by asking for one? Visconi must be kicking himself right now.
I guess it is all in how you ask…..Frank was kind of a dick….
He still is!
Kind of?
Visconti’s a raging cheese-crusted blue-veiner if ever there was one.
Yeah, cheese….like kochkäse = kochkase, soft and runny.
/ewwwww, I just grossed myself out.
I was caught in plenty of indirect fire attacks while in Iraq, including a 107mm rocket that impacted about 50-60 yards from me in the IZ that actually shook me up a bit. NOT ONCE did I even think about sending in the paperwork for a CAB, it was just part of the job and all in a day’s duty. Uncle Sam needs to make an example of this scamming mutherfucker…
Well, now that there has been such a fuss about the Commander’s ability to revoke awards, I think this should be one of the first cases.
Army should be yanking that shit right out of his record. Then, because he did this while on active duty, recall him to for Courts Martial and have him spend quality time in Club Leavenworth.
Normally they require active duty medical records to be awards the PH. I was awarded mine 3 years after I med retired. I had to show them medical records and serious incident report as well. How did this guy get his?
Yeah.
I am a little confused on this.
The VA accepted his CAB and PH, which while weak as hell, both appear to be legitimately awarded.
And if the VA was paying them based on legitimate documentation, how is it fraud?
I am not saying this turd is not a embellishing shitbag, just curious as to how they are coming after him.
Because the entire story was fabricated by him … it was all a LIE!
I do not disagree at all.
But I am trying to understand HOW they got him.
According to the article, he had all legitimate paperwork. And I have news for you, I have pointed out some of the clowns to the VA and they do not care.
Why so in this case?
And when I say legitimate, I mean the correct form, correct signature, etc. Not necessarily an ACCURATE account.
Well, GT – fraud and/or false statements concerning his application for VA disability compensation comes to mind.
This guy was claiming he was so BD that he couldn’t tie his own shoes, but was coaching basketball and working. I’m guessing he was presumably walking around/running/demonstrating things to his kids while coaching, and was observed walking around normally while working.
A PH and a CAB in and of themselves don’t automatically entitle the person to anything from the VA but membership in Priority Group 3 for medical care. (It also gets you hiring preference for Federal and many state/local govt jobs.) For compensation, one must still demonstrate disability due to medical conditions caused by or aggravated during military service.
To pull down $1/4M, the guy was apparently getting mucho dinero based on his “disability”; ditto his sister as his “caregiver” – but his “disability” apparently was made up out of whole cloth. Uncle Sugar doesn’t like it when he catches people defrauding him.
The woman needs to go to jail for that “caregiver” bullshit, period. I have seen good people and caregivers denied that allowance.
That being said, I would be curious to see the C&P physician that signed off on his evaluation and the VBA rater that authorized the claim. More than likely another case of an unqualified person practicing in an area that they have no expertise. Or the claimant’s buddy. I have seen that before, as well.
The VA makes lots of errors but refuses to rectify or admit them while screwing legitimate claims/vets.
Oh, I agree – the bozo that signed off on his “disability” needs to be investigated bigtime, and if dirty needs to end up in the next cell for aiding and abetting fraud.
And you’re unfortunately correct that the VA – like most organizations – is loath to admit mistakes.
Someone had to rat him out. My money’s on an angry ex-girlfriend.
Possibly.
But the VA turns a blind eye to this sort of thing. And the VA OIG is very similar to a steaming pile of Phil Monkress.
There had to be an “inside” push and reason. And I am curious as to the how and what.
He was close to an explosion and used that to get a “Free-AB” and a PH, fuckin’ lowlife booger-eating bedwetting toad snot-sucking Santorum-stained dingleberry on a buck-toothed inbred Swamp Donkey’s ass!
John Kerry is still getting away with doing the same thing.
So is Bob “The Maggot” Hay.
BTW….”BD” = Broke Dick
/they should give him tweezers, a magnifying glass, a toothpick and 1/2 of duct tape.
Forget the duct tape. Have him use super glue to attach the toothpick as a splint.
Well Hondo,
That’s kind of what I was shooting for (as you say, “smile”) but after second throught, They should just take the toothpick and tweezers and jamb it up his urethra and then glue it shut.
I saw this story on the Seattle news broadcast last night. I did not know that one could just request a medal. What a turd.
His sister was his caregiver. That sounds pretty perverted. He must have been giving her a little something for helping scam the VA….. She had to falsify documents to receive caregiver pay. Hope they both rot in jail.
Hard to pretend your that disabled for long, some one from the VA must have figured out he was scamming them. Makes me sick to think about him wasting resources that could have gone to legitimate disabled veterans. This is why there is such a backlog on decisions, and the requirement to provide so much proof. So getting the Army to just give him medals to shut him up is really a pisser. Really puts a stigma on the awarding of medals and those that receive them properly.
Well shucks, if we can just ask for awards then I would like the the Marine Corps Achievement Medal. I never served in the MC but I did fly on a chartered flight over to Okinawa which was almost all Marines. That qualifies, right?
And then there was that time back in March 1998 when I nearly got stranded at Fontanarossa Airport in Catania, Sicily. Despite my ignorance of the Italian language, I somehow found my way to NAS Sigonella, got checked in, drank espresso all night so I wouldn’t miss my ride out to the coast to meet up with USS Toledo SSN 769. It was a harrowing journey, I tell you. I really thought I was screwed. I thought, oh God, they’re going to get me on an Article 87 if I don’t figure something out and quick! And what do you know, I improvised some transportation and, by God, I made it! And dammit all, I believe I deserve some form of recognition! And that’s why I’m putting myself in for a Navy Achievement Medal! Just kidding. Just kidding. 😀
His getting a CAB for that would be like me putting in for a CIB from the warning shots we fired while protecting convoys!
What a needledick.
