DoJ considers charges against Petraeus

Petraeus and Broadwell

The New York Times reports that Eric Holder is weighing whether or not the Justice Department will prefer charges against David Petraeus, the former commander of forces in Iraq, then Afghanistan. The charges seem to be in regards to his mistress and biographer, Paula Broadwell, an Army Reserve officer and classified documents found on her computer.

Mr. Petraeus…has said he never provided classified information to Ms. Broadwell, and has indicated to the Justice Department that he has no interest in a plea deal that would spare him an embarrassing trial. A lawyer for Mr. Petraeus, Robert B. Barnett, said Friday he had no comment.

Mr. Holder was expected to decide by the end of last year whether to bring charges against Mr. Petraeus, but he has not indicated how he plans to proceed. The delay has frustrated some Justice Department and F.B.I officials and investigators who have questioned whether Mr. Petraeus has received special treatment at a time Mr. Holder has led an unprecedented crackdown on government officials who reveal secrets to journalists.

Yeah, he’s Mister Petraeus now. I’m sure this news is meant to distract us from something else. I can’t get outraged about this – while I was defending Petraeus on this blog, he was boinking some Twinkie. Here I thought that killing terrorists was his priority, not leaving protozoa laying around. If he knowingly gave the Twinkie classified documents, he’s even dumber than I thought. if she stole the documents and left them on her personal computer, she shouldn’t get near a MENSA application either.

Good commentary on this one, John.
It always seemed to me that the media was fawning over him a bit too much, and he was probably somewhat overrated. All like Colin Powell was.
Patraeus gave up so much for so little…

And thanks for being an embarrassment to my beloved 101st Airborne, that you once commanded, General.

Once again, a question that has been asked for centuries: was that piece of tail worth it?

Leading with his d!ck was impressively stupid.
I wonder what they are so concerned about?
What he knows about some event/policy or possible electoral run?
The former governor of Arkansas has lowered the sexual shenanigans bar low enough that it is a non issue.

“The former governor of Arkansas has lowered the sexual shenanigans bar low enough that it is a non issue.”

El wrongo: said horndog is a Dim. Different rules.

Well, if any of us had done this with classified, we’d be in jail. I’m guessing that this wasn’t FOUO stuff.

The “investigation” has been in infinite mode for quite a while and NOW they is a finding with less than two years to go in this administration?

The Other Whitey

I’m guessing they’re expecting another major scandal on the Glorious Leader’s part, and want to make sure they have a distraction ready to go when it happens.

palolojo

They are using this to keep him in line.

OWB

The only reaction I can muster is, “So, why do they want us to look at this? Again? Some more?”

UpNorth

For the same reason that the pResident felt compelled to say, “look, over there, free college!! Pay no attention to my vetoes, and the continuing soap opera that is my administration.

JimW

This sure seems to be a non issue. Petraeus career is already on the rocks. Nothing to gain here, and nobody cares.

nbcguy54

Do you think they’re afraid he was considering running for office in the future? Nothing like a little preemptive crap like this to cause a ” re-think”.

AW1Ed

Everything this administration does is viewed through a political lens. No doubt this is intended to keep Petraeus in his box.

RazorbackStrong

General, loose lips sink ships.
Broadwell, your lips get “money shots”

Poetrooper

Consider for a moment that Benghazi is still a lingering threat to the Obama administration and the future prospects of the leading Democrat candidate for president in 2016 and you have your reason for this Democrat prosecutorial pressure on Petraeus.

As CIA director at the time, he knows very well what actually happened and could yet be called before Congress to testify. Should that happen you can bet the Dems will be engaged in their absolute worst dirty tactics to keep him from revealing the truth.

This announcement was just a warning shot across the bow for the general.

Madconductor

Nailed it. Petraeus knows what happened. The fact that he has “no interest in a plea deal” indicates he’s ready to say it. But the obozo admin has to sully him even more to water down his testimony. All Holder has ever done is try to confuse the facts with fiction and marketing. Truth is a creative endeavor with these obozo people.

Luddite4Change

Bingo!

But, couldn’t they have picked code names from a better movie? Come on, Special Agent Johnny Utah and Tyler.

Stacy0311

Yeah he might’ve screwed up with classified info. So I guess this means will see charges filed against Pannetta after that nice speech he gave that helped out the screen writers for 0 Dark Thirty? Maybe a little payback for his poo flinging memoir?
Probably not, that’d be too obvious of a political hack job.

Maybe Petraeus can get the Sandy Berger penalty for mishandling classified information

Beretverde

“The higher you go…the higher the standards.” We’ll see.

Snowden is still in Russia.

Don’t mess with classified stuff…or married stuff…unless it’s yours.

Hondo

The last sentence is excellent advice, Beretverde. Unfortunately, part of it also seems to be very difficult for many – both males and females – to follow.
