Coastie fraud in Maryland
Jeff Quinton sends us a link to his blog where he reported from a WBAL story about recently discharged Coast Guardsman Sterling Orlando Scott who pretended to be an Army Sergeant Major to defraud the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Program;
CGIS agents indicated that they received information from a Chief Warrant Officer on December 2, 2014, who reported receiving a phone call from an individual that identified himself as “Sergeant Major Reese from Army Emergency Relief” on December 2nd around 1:00 p.m.
The person claiming to be “Sergeant Major Reese” indicated that he had an Army member flying to Baltimore that needed emergency travel assistance. In addition, “Sergeant Major Reese” contacted the Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Program at 2401 Hawkins Point Road in Curtis Bay asking for assistance for a soldier named “Orland Scott”, whose wife was reportedly killed in a car accident. The person calling was believed to be the defendant posing as “Sergeant Major Reese”. CGIS agents had developed information that the individual posing as “Orlando Scott” was actually Sterling Orlando Scott who had committed similar schemes under that name at military installations in Galveston, Texas, Yorktown, Pennsylvania, Savannah Georgia and Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
On December 4, 2014, the suspect showed up at the Hawkins Point Road location to receive the funds approved for his alleged crisis. Once he signed for the funds, he was immediately taken into custody by detectives and agents conducting surveillance.
Dumbass.

Another SHITBIRD con artist about to be the “property” of Bubba & Thor!
Is this our second Coastie phony?
Or were there more?
We had one who was a complete phony Coastie (he’d never served) and then we had another one who was in the Coast Guard, but he pretended to be a SEAL while wearing a CG uniform. So…
Oh I so hope this twat pickle comes here or a puppet or two…my vocabulary needs a work out 😈
HAH!!! Twat pickle!!! 😀
Twat pickle? What happened to “Unfortunately phallic-shaped hedge…”?
Splash. Out.
Both the article’s headline and the article itself (more than once) refer to him as a “former military member.” I am not at all sure what to make of that. The best I can do is surmise that either WBAL never confirmed that he was a Coastie or that it isn’t familiar with the word Veteran.
2/17, I have been told that the Coast Guard has a unique dual role in that it is part of the Department of Homeland Security, and the DOD can also deploy members of the Coast Guard in a military role.
There is a member of the Coast Guard who has earned the MOH, for actions during WWII.

Here is a story about the USCG and how they are contributing to military service during the War on Terror.

@ Jon The Mechanic
Yes we are part of DOD and Homeland Security, but we are also the 5th Branch of the Armed Forces, which means we can and have been deployed in every conflict since WW1, to include DS/DS, Iraq and A-stan…..We are also First Responders having been deployed to NYC and Boston during 9/11, Katrina and Haiti.
Fun Fact: Coasties are the only Branch that have Civilian Leo Authority 🙂
Indeed. My father was a Hospital Corpsman in WWII. After serving with the marines in the Pacific during the early part of the war, in mid-1944 he was transferred to LST 202. That ship, except for my father, was entirely crewed by Coast Guard.
The ship participated in the landings at Leyte, and was under attack by both Japanese shore-based artillery and Kamikazes.
In fact, if you search for LST 202, there are pics of her at sea while under attack by those Kamikaze.
There were thousands and thousands of Coast Guard sent to all theaters in WWII to help augment US Naval Forces, and their records are sterling.
Toasty, after retiring the second time I had the privilege of serving alongside Coasties as a member of the Aux for ten years. National staff, coxswain, the whole bit and loved every minute of it until I encountered an asshole CW2 who acted like an ensign. One of those who became a warrant without passing E-5. Regardless, you have a great branch and I salute all but a couple of pricks.
Retired Army CWO
Jon,
And one who should have been awarded the MOH.

Moron!!
If you’re going to defraud the gubmint, remember to change your name each time you do it.
It takes them like 20 months to correct paperwork, and by then they’ll have forgotten!
Jeez! Any crook knows that!
Damn, I didn’t even know there is such a thing as the CGIS. CBS and Don Bellisario needs to get crackin’ and start cranking out “CGIS: Key West” episodes for our viewing edification…
Actually, CGIS agent Abby Doran has been in multiple episodes of NCIS.
Local broadcast news says that this was the second time that he’d pulled that off in Maryland and that he’d used the scam in other states in our area.
It’s his own fault for not ensuring that “the coast is clear”.
I am surprised nobody posted that comment yet.
What a dirtbag.
Hammer his package flat, hand him a paintbrush, and point him at a WHEC. The Chief Boats will know what to do with him.
I’m willing to bet a whole lot of B/M’s would know what to do with him too. lol.
