Beretta USA packs their bags

| July 22, 2014

Robert sends us a link to the Beretta USA website that announces that they’re moving lock, stock and barrel to Tennessee. Previously, Beretta was only moving the manufacture of some guns to Tennessee, but they changed their minds, I guess;

“During the legislative session in Maryland that resulted in passage of the Firearm Safety Act of 2013, the version of the statute that passed the Maryland Senate would have prohibited Beretta U.S.A. from being able to manufacture, store or even import into the State products that we sell to customers throughout the United States and around the world. While we were able in the Maryland House of Delegates to reverse some of those obstructive provisions, the possibility that such restrictions might be reinstated in the future leaves us very worried about the wisdom of maintaining a firearm manufacturing factory in the State,” stated Jeff Cooper, General Manager for Beretta U.S.A. Corp.

“While we had originally planned to use the Tennessee facility for new equipment and for production of new product lines only, we have decided that it is more prudent from the point of view of our future welfare to move the Maryland production lines in their entirety to the new Tennessee facility,” Cooper added.

The transition of production from Beretta U.S.A.’s Maryland facility to the Tennessee facility will not occur until 2015 and will be managed so as not to disrupt deliveries to Beretta customers. Beretta U.S.A.’s production of the U.S. Armed Forces M9 9mm pistol will continue at the Accokeek, Maryland facility until all current orders from the U.S. Armed Forces have been filled.

So, Governor Marty O’Malley’s blindsiding gun owners and dealers in Maryland had consequences. Wiki says the plant in Maryland has about 400 employees. And O’Malley has his eye on the White House or the Naval Observatory.

Smart move. I wondered when it would happen. The city of Gallatin is already planning to move up the timeline on construction of the plant to August, and hiring will be accelereated.

Here’s the story from The Tennesseean.

Outstanding!

Hondo

Too freaking bad. Tell everyone in TN “O’Malley sent us.”

And tell everyone in MD the same.

Climb to Glory

Exactly. Fuck that guy. What a bum. Good luck with the presidential campaign Marty, you dipshit.

Dave Hardin

Seems West Virginia would have been a lot closer. Wait….Oh that’s right, its not a right to work state. Liberals and Unions just looking out for the little guy.

Virtual Insanity

Tennessee is a right-to-work state, Maryland is not.

I don’t know if the plant in Maryland is unionized…If it is, and the plant in Tennessee is non-union, Berretta’s costs may go down significantly.

Pinto Nag

It’s called voting with your feet. But I wonder — how long is running going to work?

rb325th

Yes, elections and legislation DO have consequences.

LIRight

Good for Beretta!!

Ironically, today I received a new mag from Midway Arms for my 92FS (Desert Storm Commemorative).

If I could get the hell off Long Island…..and out of the North East??!! Too many grandkids and ties to this area…so I’ll deal with it.

NHSparky

New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont are, at least from a 2A standpoint, pissing in the eye of the flatlander liberals.

A fact for which I am daily grateful.

Rick

I read you have the D.S. commemorative 92FS. I recently acquired one and have not been able to obtain any information about it. It has the tan coloration on barrel and frame with the black slide. Can you tell me anything about it. The coloration is coming off the barrel and frame by the dust cover. Is this duracoat or just paint? Any info would be appreciated. Rick in Colorado Springs.

OldSoldier54

I guess a moron never learns. Either that, or they’re just born brain-damaged.

Michael

I hope Tennessee doesn’t get stuck on stupid like Maryland has. The Murfreesboro plant is about 30 miles south of Nashville in a very Democrat party influenced area. I think they’ll still have a tough fight on their hands.

Delilah T.

I think people who have jobs with Beretta and didn’t have them before Beretta will be user-friendly to Beretta.

Isnala

The only thing that saddens me with this announcement is that they’re moving to Tenn and not Texas….

Nucsnipe

To add insult to injury, Tennessee should build one of these and aim it at Maryland http://m.theweek.com/speedreads/index/265158/speedreads-man-builds-biggest-fart-machine-ever-plans-to-aim-it-at-france

Hondo

Looks like he’s going to “fart in their general direction” – and presumably do so proudly! (smile)

The article has an embedded YouTube video. Here’s the direct link:

It’s freaking hilarious.

VTWoody

What’s even worse, is when the announcement came out, OweMalley responded with some crap about looking past Beretta and focusing on all the jobs that Maryland has already created! The sheep will believe that he’s helping the state out.

Hack Stone

Governor O’Malley plans on using the closed plant to house the influx of “unaccompanied undocumented minors “.

GDContractor

I wonder how long Ruger will tough it out in Connecticut and how long Kimber will stay in NY. Texas will be right here…waiting.

NHSparky

NH will be happy to take them too.

GDContractor

Forgot to add Henry, in NJ of all places. That’s just not right. Live Free Or Die does have a kickass ring to it.

harp1034

Ruger makes their guns in other states. Only the HQ is in CT. Must be because of some 99 year deal from the 1950s.

ExHack

Nevada really needs a major gunmaker. Other than no state corporate income tax (although the margins tax is being pushed again this year), the lucky winner can open up “The (your name here!) Experience” on the Strip. Superstore, range, custom shop, you name it – manufacturing, entertainment, and your name in neon, with a manufacturing plant and corporate HQ tucked away down the street. We will take whatever the Northeastern nitwits don’t want. Too bad our economic development people are so lame.

Adios, mofos!

MCPO NYC USN Ret.

I don’t care.

I accidently shot and killed my dog named “Fido” in front of my ailing grandma and seven year old sister trying to figure out how to operate the M-9.

It was a truly tragic and horrific scene.

I love my expansive collection of Sigs!

Roger in Republic

When I saw the headline I thought “good they are going back to Italy and taking their crappy M-9 with them”. The only reason they set up shop here in the first place was to get the contract to sell the M-9 to the government. A move, by the way, that I resisted. Now they say the Barettas are wearing out. How does a popgun firing the 9 MM parabellum “wear out”? I have a hundred year old Colt 1911 that probably has a 100,000 full power FNJ’s down the pipe and it works very well indeed. It went through an ordinance level rebuild just after WWI and a tuneup or two since, but it still shoots like a dream.Every reason used to replace the colt was bogus. Shure the M-9 has more bullets in the Mag, but all they give you, aside from a false sense of confidence, is more misses per minute.

Baretta does make some very fine field and trap guns so I suppose they can stay. Perhaps they should make some AR platform rifles, but only if they cost less than $ 1000 bucks.

The Other Whitey

I agree Beretta pistols suck ass (sweaty, hairy, crusty, monkey ass) but their shotguns and rifles are pretty damn good. They made the BM-59, after all.

In any case, I support their decision. And I’ll never waste money on their pistols, but if California ever adopts some non-gay gun laws (I know, not holding my breath), I’d like to get one of those CX4 carbines.

NHSparky

Meh. Sig makes a nice M4 that takes 5.56 and comes in at right at a grand.

If I bought one, that is. Damn boating accidents.

Casey

They have one, called the ARX100. Heard some good reviews about it.

Alas, the MSRP is $1,950, so they certainly didn’t listen. :-/

B Woodman

Voting with feet and wallets. A combination that’s hard to beat.
I hope Beretta takes (or at least offers to take) their MD workers to TN to the new plant. A double poke in the eyes to O’Mallard.

Hayabusa

Beretta’s U.S. GM is named Jeff Cooper?

How cool is that?

David

Maybe a handgun R&D guy named Keith, plant security Jordan, long gun research Askins… the possibilities are too cool.

Roger in Republic

That was my exact thought when I saw it too.

ExHack

Just curious, for those living on the East Coast: is there anything positive that O’Malley has done for anybody, anywhere?

Hondo

Not that I’m aware of. But I guess I could have missed him escorting a little old lady across the street when he was a kid.

Fen

He mouths the right platitudes to make the liberals here feel good about themselves. Thats what really matters.

jerry920

As a resident of the late, great state of MD, I would say, no.

ExHack

What I thought. Thanks.
