Gohmert: large caliber weaponry fired at Border Patrol

| July 20, 2014

Fox News reports that Texas Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert has told them that Border Patrol agents came under fire from a .50 caliber rifle along the frontier last night;

The weapons were fired at the U.S. side of the riverbank in the area of the Rincon Peninsula across the Rio Grande from Reynosa, Mexico, at about 8:30 p.m., sources said. Bullets ricocheted into an area where Border Patrol agents were positioned, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told FoxNews.com.

Border Patrol sources confirmed Gohmert’s account, and said the shots may have been fired by .50-caliber weapons.

“We don’t have any armor that can stop a .50-caliber round, so our Border Patrol agents had to take cover when the rounds were richocheting around them,” said Gohmert, who has been in the area for the last week to get a first-hand look at the border situation.

When the shooting stopped, a couple of dozen illegal immigrants surrendered to the agents. Gohmert says that the gunfire was meant to suppress any effort to stop the illegals from crossing the border.

“I don’t know why we’re out here like sitting ducks,” one Border Patrol source said. “We need help.”

Help, like some A-10s or Apache helicopters. Or some armed drones.

Bullshit. The Border is secure. Harry Reid told me so. /s

Did they at least return fire?

The Other Whitey

How is this not an act of war?

Isnala

My thoughts exactly! Personally I think we should borrow a page from the Isrealis here. Put them down hard and fast and if the Mexican goventment has a problem with that, cut all foreign aid and block the import of all Mexican goods util they get on board. Of course it will never happen.

Firemankennyf

The current administration will not stop the flow of illegal immigration as ALL of them are potential voters in the next election. Their only instruction will be for the democratic party and you will continue to get aid. Why do you think all of illegals are being flown to different states? VOTES FOR AMNESTY- 2016

Delilah T.

It is. It simply has not been ‘declared’ an act of war.

Defender

remember, the border patrol were told by the B.O. piece of sh!t to stand down and not return fire but to run and hide.

Sparks

Yet another reason to wall or otherwise make the border as secure as the Berlin Wall, minus tunneling capabilities via deep planted mines. I am fed up with Mexico. Their administration laughs at the U.S. while enjoying our economic largesse. Their government is as much at fault as the coyotes and cartels they are in bed with.

Thunderstixx

It’s gonna blow one of these days. There will be dead ICE cops and the only thing that will save the border is constant enforcement of our southern border.
Something the current administration is refusing to do…

I M Simpleton

You mean MORE dead ICE agents.

Delilah T.

Refusing to do? Thunderstixx, I think you’re giving bodaprez far too much credit for something he doesn’t have: initiative.

You see in bodaprez a perfect example of the Peter Principle at work: rising to his level of incompetence.

Where the hell does this end?

NHSparky

What really scares me is not that the Border Patrol is going to overreact, but one of these militia/open-carry fucktards will, and at that point, it’s pretty much junior rodeo on.

Isnala

Agreed. To mis quote a movie:”This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it.”

nbcguy54

Notice how quiet the klan and the skinheads are on all of this? I agree that it’s just a matter of time before something really bad is going to happen and shit really hits the main rotor blades.

Delilah T.

The open carry goofs? Oh, hell, put them to work down there. They won’t last long. They are all show and no ‘go’.

Delilah T.

A couple of rounds of well-aimed artillery could put a stop to that crap.

And just why ARE the BP guys out there like sitting ducks?

This is pissing me off.

TopGoz

Meanwhile, the DoD continues to sell “surplus” up-armored HMMVWs and MRAPs…

SFC D

I’m thinking that CBP needs a few truck mounted miniguns.

GE. We bring good things to life.

TheWesternWorldIsScrewed

Drones would be perfect border patrol. Fucking blow those illegals back with the push of a button.

“said the shots may have been fired by .50-caliber weapons.”

Was it .50 cal or not. If it was that is very disturbing to me. Of course the border is secured, right? It’s time to get armed air assets to the border.

The Other Whitey

“We don’t have any armor that can stop a .50-caliber round, so our Border Patrol agents had to take cover…”

Unless I’m mistaken, there is no wearable armor in existence that will stop a .50BMG round. Vehicles need some pretty thick plate to withstand that shit. In any case, I support vehicle-mounted .50s and MK19s for Border Patrol. At least let them respond with equal force!

Bill

OK, I’ve GOT to ask the obvious questions:

WHO GOT A BMG .50? Coyotes? Narco cartels? Mexican military? Some other group?

WHERE DID THEY GET THEM AND THE AMMO? Fast & Furious? Open/black market? US military aid? Cracker Jack boxes?

This is some industrial strength armament here, and it isn’t cheap.

Roger in Republic

Wasn’t there a Barrett or two among the Fast and Furious guns that BATF gun walked to the cartels?

nbcguy54

Looks like they got ordered to stand down so as not to upset our southern neighbors or ruffle any feathers up here. Gee – what a surprise.

Delilah T.

I’m with Bill – where did those clankers get a .50 cal and the ammo for it?

That’s nothing to sneeze at. I want some answers including one for the obvious question: why is the Border Patrol not set up to respond to these people properly?

Hondo

Bill, DT: .50 BMG ammo is readily available. Google “.50 cal ammo for sale” and you’ll find a number of places with it in stock for immediate sale.

The same is true for the .50 cal Barrett rifle.

GDContractor

I’ve even seen .50 SLAP rounds for sale on Texas gun trader dot com. Seller in Killeen as I recall. Different kind of jail bait.

Delilah T.

So what you’re saying is that I can mount a .50 cal gun on the roof of my car and go for target practice?

COOL!

Pinto Nag

Delilah, all it takes to own a .50 cal is money. There are a couple for sale locally. So’s the ammo. Problem is finding a range long enough to get some range time. Here, there’s a 1000 yard range about 2hrs from where I live — you have to be a member.

Start broadcasting all of the FLIR video clips from the past 10 years that show the taliban getting splattered. At the end of each clip put up a graphic that reads “Shoot at the US and you’ll be next.”

Richard

And then get the fuck out there and make it happen. A few good examples are worth a thousand speeches. I know somebody who can drive a Grey Eagle. I’m old but I can still drive binoculars or operate a trigger if it comes to that.

streetsweeper

The border gangs and wayward troops/policia have no fear what-so-evah of being on the business end any kind of retaliation from our side. And until some of them actually cross the middle of the Rio, they will only laugh at the Texas DPS and bet your ass they know the firepower the DPS boats carry.

streetsweeper

Oh, and this out of the Valley. BP says those shots were not directed towards the BP agents.

http://www.valleycentral.com/news/story.aspx?id=1072586#.U8xvkqSVtZ1

Just an Old Dog

I’m sure it’s a comfort to the Agents in the field that any bullets that hit them aren’t being aimed at them.

streetsweeper

I forgot to add /sarc to that, sorry. What I’m trying to figure is, how do they know its .50 cal? Does the round stop mid-flight and announce itself with something like “Hi there! I’m from a BMG .50 cal and came all the way here just to fuck you up”. lol.

Gravel

I wondered that as well.

I highly doubt that any one of them know the difference between a .308 and a .50, or other high-end round for that matter. Especially if these were “ricochets” as claimed in the article.

I shall remain skeptical until/unless pieces were picked up and sent to a lab and examined by a specialist and then confirmed to be .50 caliber rounds.

nbcguy54

As a side note, TSA security fees go up today. I feel safer already….

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Anywhere along the border that fires into the US should be a reason to send in indirect return fire in the form of incendiary ordnance. Let Mexico know if they can’t police their side of the fucking border we will defoliate it for them to a distance of 5 miles in order to render it a fucking wasteland inhospitable to foot traffic. If they complain let them know we view their concerns with the same level of consideration we view Pakistan’s border concerns. Meaning we believe the Mexican government to be a complicit accomplice to these crimes and we will react accordingly to defend our borders…

Then when you wake up and see the reality of the Obama administration’s ineffectual puffery you’ll remember that the Obama administration has indeed changed the way the world views the US, the world knows we are a giant, introspective turd right now with a fool at the helm.

Richard

I am in favor of doing something – this seems a little more dramatic than what I was thinking but I am not opposed to it.

I am opposed to sitting on my ass until I have no choices except military force.

Illegal immigrants and drugs aside, Mexico has sold us oil and tequila and minerals and it is not actively bad. My trips there have been pleasant. The Mexican people I work with are cool. But if Mexico does not control the traffic over the border and my government does not control traffic over the border then I blame my government, not Mexico.

If we have to defoliate the Mexican desert for 5 miles (can I even do that in a desert?) then lets get it done. Right now even the Mexican military doesn’t respect the border. Lead, follow, or get out of the way.
