Keith Chandler and his Purple Heart license plates

ChipNASA sends us a link from WKBN News which reports that yet another veteran, Keith Chandler, has become a guest of the local County Jail for falsifying his military records in order to get himself some Purple Heart license plates;

According to Greg Hicks, Warren City Law Director, Chandler forged his DD214 papers while applying for the plates at the Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles. The incidents occurred in 2012 when he initially applied for the Purple Heart plates and again when he went to renew the plates in 2013. He has been charged with 2 felony counts of tampering with records.

According to the local authorities, Chandler had a bad conduct discharge for the military. He’d also never been injured while in the service. I wish him a lot of luck in his new chosen career.

I wonder how long before the trolls show up to tell us how we didn’t do our research again.

Did the guy ever even serve in a combat zone? Had a friend of mine drive my car while his was getting repaired and I was out of town.
Turns out he told someone my PH license plates were his. I called him out on it when I pulled up to a car he had went to and they where like oh why are you driving Matt’s car. I called him out on him and embarrassed the shit out of him.

I came across this kid (teen-early 20) at a video store parking lot a few months ago. He had on an older style (80-90s?) Army field jacket on which he had pinned numerous awards, not all of which even appeared to be Army. Sorry, I wasn’t thinking fast enough to snap a pic. I said something like wow that’s offensive as he was walking past me, at which time he points to the purple heart plates on the car he was driving. So I point at (my son’s car) the CIB plates and said something like I seriously doubt either of us are driving our own cars and walked away from the little dweeb. I do wish I had snapped a pic so you could see how seriously ridiculous the idiot looked.

Sean Mather (facebook commenter): Michigan isn’t unique. Most states require very little actual proof for such plates. And they allow that “proof” to be provided by the individual vice requiring it to be sent from official sources.

Most places give a PH recipient a huge tax break on his/her license plate fees. I’d guess the number of PH license plates out there issued due to fraud would shock most people. I’d be surprised if it’s less than 20%, and shocked if it’s less than 10%.

According to a friend here in Houston, his tags get him free parking at the bog sports arenas, free tolls on the toll roads… he thinks they’re a sweet deal.
Plus he hasn’t had a ticket since he got them. (Disclosure – believe he has 3 legitimate PHs. Don’t think he is scamming – although I envy his golf scores.)

Yes, in Ohio Purple Heart plates are free, as well as the respect and preferential treatment anyone would receive simply for having those tags. You do have to show your DD214, but Chandler altered his. There was also a 50ish female in the area that altered her DD214 to receive monetary assistance. :/ In Ohio there are many grants for people injured in theater. Unfortunately, the scammers are very good at what they do and people aren’t trained to detect altered DD214s. Even some of the Veteran organizations have been taken.
