Morons at the Hartford Courant
I’ve seen some real dumbasses in my time, but the Editorial Board at the Hartford Courant must be the dumbassiest.
Whatever the circumstances of his capture, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was the last American prisoner of war. Now that he is free, might it be time to rethink the POW-MIA flags that have flown over some public buildings for 40 years?
The black and white flag, with an image of a downcast prisoner, is a relic of the Vietnam War. It was developed by POW wives, who formed a group called the National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia in the early 1970s to direct attention at the treatment of POWs in Vietnam.
President Richard Nixon co-opted the POW-MIA issue, with the flag, groups and bracelets, as a way of generating emotional support for the war, said Rutgers University historian H. Bruce Franklin. The flag was a rallying point for those who felt there were living POWs left behind in Vietnam after the prisoner release in 1973.
[…]
There are no more living prisoners in Vietnam; there almost assuredly were none after 1973. The military continues to work at finding and identifying the remains of solders listed as missing, now about 1,600. The flag has outlived the purpose for which it was created.
I guess the stank-ass hippies in Connecticut don’t like being reminded that they really don’t give a shit about American fighting men and women. POW/MIA or otherwise. That big black and white flag flapping away in the breeze reminds them of the fact that they just don’t care no matter how hard they try.
Their remembrance of history is a little skewed, too, by the way. Although the flag was born during the Nixon Administration, it wasn’t flown over the White House until 1982 and for the first time over the Capitol for the 1989 National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The flag wasn’t recognized by Congress until 1990. That’s all according to the Defense Prisoners of War and Missing Personnel Office, but, hey the hippies at the Hartford Courant know more than them, don’t they? Or maybe they just hate Nixon that much.
There are about 83,000 Americans who remain missing according to DPMO, the flag isn’t just about Vietnam – but I guess it’s hard to convince the stank-ass hippies who think that everything is about them – especially if it reminds them that they’re always on the wrong side of history.

“The military continues to work at finding and identifying the remains of solders listed as missing, now about 1,600. The flag has outlived the purpose for which it was created.” Huh? What was taht? There are MIAs, the writer acknowledges, but the POW/MIA flag has outlived its usefulness? Um. Am I missing something? I must be because it appears that unless one defines usefulness in the sense that flying the POW/MIA flag itself causes the release of POWs and the indentification and repatriation of the MIAs, the writer has contradicted himself, herself, or itself.
There’s a simple explanation, 2/17 Air Cav. Read the title of Jonn’s article above.
Freedom of speech does have its drawbacks, one being that it allows morons to spout idiocy. Still beats the alternative, though.
“There are no more living prisoners in Vietnam; there almost assuredly were none after 1973…. The flag has outlived the purpose for which it was created.”
The folks killed in the 9/11 bombings are still dead. Does that mean that any remeberances of them have outlived their purposes? Tombstones seem to outlive their purposes pretty quick too. How about other ways that we try to keep the memories of those who are no longer with us? yeah, we don’t need silly stuff like that.
Actually I think the Hartford Courant has outlived it’s purpose…
Out.
Courant: n. obsolete except in names of newspapers. (Source: Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
Yeah, obsolete. Perfect name for the paper.
nbcguy54…You are on point. To continue your thought train, why not do away with all remembrances? Let’s just stop remembering Memorial Day and those who gave their lives for the ass hats in Hartford. Let’s do away with Veterans Day because, well they are home or serving and they get paid don’t they? While we’re at it has July 4th outlived its value? Hey Hartford Courant how about forgetting your moms and dads deaths and maybe, God forbid, that of one of your children because after all it is just wasted sentiment isn’t it? What a bunch of brain dead, no heart, liberal ass wipes. Living under the flag of our nation and remembering all those who served and those never found is just a waste of time to them. They had better hope America never falls or has a conflict on our own soil. Because despite their rhetoric, they would be the first ones lined up against the enemies wall to be shot. And, were I an invading enemy to America, the liberal strongholds would be my first touchdown points for insertion. Fewer weapons, scared shitless cowards who are cave in to the enemy citizens. Easy pickins’.
Resolution No. 288, adopted at the 67th National Convention, calls for designating a POW/MIA Empty Chair at all official Legion meetings as a physical symbol of the thousands of American POW/MIAs still unaccounted for.
The Legion’s commitment to this issue was re-emphasized last month at the 94th National Convention in Indianapolis. Resolution No. 78 states that “The American Legion remains steadfast in our commitment to the goal of achieving the fullest possible accounting for all U.S. military personnel and designated civilian personnel missing and unaccounted for from our nation’s wars.”

Funny; I don’t see anything that specifically designates it as a Vietnam War issue………..Of course, the assholes at the Hartford Courant, being the stank-ass hippies that they are, are still reliving the glory days of spitting on Vietnam Veterans and calling them baby killers while wearing hammer and sickle shirts and carrying Che flags.
fuck ’em
NUKE THE HIPPIES!!
FROM ORBIT!!
It’s the only way to be sure!
Glass parking lots and glow-in-the dark targets.
24 empty missile tubes, a mushroom cloud, and it’s MILLER TIME!
Most sane people dont really listen to what the Courant says anyways. Some times I hate this state. SMH. 🙁
Every morning at my Armory, I raised the flag of the United States of America, the flag of the State of Oregon, and the POW/MIA flag. Why? Bergdahl isn’t the last POW/MIA. As I remember it, there are still MIA service members from Vietnam.
There are indeed MIA from Vietnam. 1,642 remain unaccounted for as of 1 June 2014.
There are indeed MIA from Korea. 7,887 remain unaccounted for as of 30 May 2014.
There are indeed still MIA from World War II – 73,547, not including those buried at sea.
There are even missing from the Cold War – 172 remain unaccounted for after disappearing during Cold War missions, some of which involved hostile action.
There are also 6 individuals whose remains were never recovered from Operation El Dorado Canyon, the Gulf War, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“Outlived the purpose for which it was created” my ass. The fools at the Hartford Courant can go fornicate themselves.
Just who do these fools think they are? The POW/MIA flag has NEVER served a useful purpose for them, so for it to continue to serve no useful purpose for them should come as no great shock to anyone.
They are perfectly free to express their opinion about nearly anything, but telling others that we should ACT upon their feelings is so typically over the line that it defies description.
Here’s your clue for the day, idiots: Display it or don’t display it at your house as you see fit, but don’t EVEN attempt to tell the rest of us when and where it should otherwise be displayed. It’s OUR flag. It means something to us.
But then, you fools have no respect for anyone but yourselves. We expect that attitude to continue.
Now kindly go play in traffic somewhere. Try not to cause too much damage to vehicles in the roadway.
What would a Bergdahl Era POW(never was) Flag even look like? Tippy toes, tulips, reefer …???
‘There are no more living prisoners in Vietnam; there almost assuredly were none after 1973. ”
Bobby Garwood called to say “dumbasses”.
Although to be fair, they did use the weasel word “assuredly”
Stacy0311: Robert Garwood was deserter and a collaborator. He was not a POW.
I would not take his turncoat word as being worth a damn thing.
Garwood=Bergdahl.
But I have no doubts that Garwood wasn’t the last living American serviceman in Vietnam
Perhaps. A fair number of people deserted in-country during Vietnam. Some doubtless remained behind willingly; a few might still be living there today.
But if you’re talking POWs being held involuntarily in 1979 or after – we’ll have to agree to disagree. IMO, there is neither credible evidence showing nor any rational reason to believe any POWs are still being retained against their will in SEA – or were after 1973, for that matter. Any who might have been retained after 1973 have IMO since died or been executed.
I say that because their reappearance now would raise too many difficult questions for the governments concerned. And remember: those governments have historically shown no reluctance to summarily execute those they no longer find useful.
The hippies hate it because of the reminder to them that better men and women who are willing to sacrifice their freedom and even lives exist, whereas all those fucksticks can do is talk about it while smelling their own farts.
I’m sorry dickheads at the Current but why don’t you put those crack investigative reporters on your staff to work and find out what the MIA part of POW/MIA means
BTW: Can we stop with the Bergdahl is a POW shit now? Can a deserter be a POW even when the Dept of Defense does not designate him as such?
Twits.
I’m pleased to say that the Courant is getting a pretty severe beating from its readers. The original link doesn’t seem to be displaying any comments (it may be the mobile version) but there are plenty of comments here:

“POW/MIA” –As in “Prisoner of War/Missing in Action.”
True, there are no POWs known to still be in captivity, and the likelihood of MIAs still being held alive in Russia, China, or SE Asia is so slim that only a few tinfoil-hat-wearers put any stock in it.
However, there are still LOTS of MIAs who have never been accounted for from almost every war this country has fought, all the way back to Bunker Hill. Many are listed as “Missing, Presumed Dead,” but the key word here is MISSING! No remains were recovered, no enemy records found, no information on what happened to them. Do the self-righteous cockfucks of the Hartford Courant now claim that these thousands of men don’t count?
They are/were American servicemen who fought, suffered, and died for our country! But due to the circumstances of war, they don’t even have so much as a headstone to honor their sacrifice. Hence the promise on the flag: “You are not forgotten.”
On top of all that, are we to assume that there will never be another POW or MIA? Why not? Are we all gonna hold hands, sing kumbaya, embrace our inner selves (or whatever the hell hippies claim to do), and suddenly there’ll be world peace forever? Go ahead, give it a try. Let me know how that works out for ya. Meanwhile, there will still be conflict, and American troops will still stand between you and those who would do you harm. And they will still take casualties, because that’s war.
“Casualties” –Blanket term for all personnel killed, wounded, known to be captured, or missing in action.
Kipling must have known about the staff of the Hartford Courant when he wrote “Tommy.”
Hartford Courant, that piece of crap paper has been that way since I delivered it back in the 60s as a kid. It cost $1.08 a week for 6 weeklies and a Sunday. That lets you know how much it sucked, and the stank ass hippies who read it and paid me were cheap rat bastards even then. I had to carry a pocketful of pennies for the cheap pricks who thought a two cent tip was a bit much for a 6am in their front door delivery all week long…
I learned a lot about people from that simple job I held for several years.
It’s not the only embarrassing thing to exist in Connecticut these days, trust me. I’m no longer there but my family keeps me up to date.
It was nice of the Draft Dodgers to come back from Canada and settle in Hartford so they could flaunt their cowardice in public once more.
John, it’s because they have to make room for the black and white Al Qaeda flag.
^^^ Spot on ^^^
I get a bit outragey whenever the word “captured” is used in relation to Bergdahl.
Captured, the word, has a meaning completely different from that scumbag’s situation.
Bergdahl JOINED the taliban. He left to seek them out and JOIN them. He wasn’t captured.
The only “proof” existent that he was ever “mistreated” as a “prisoner” comes from the “commander” of those who “captured” Bergdahl.
A “commander” that would know full well that all electronic comms were compromised. A “commander” that knew full well that the US was getting fair good at doing that Death By Drone thing. A “commander” who also knew full well that our own intel, and by extension our own media, are easy peasy to bend over a bench and punk bloody, as long as they’re hearing what they want to hear.
That same “commander” is the source for the misinfo that Bergdahl was so sick he was about to die. We know that was bullshit, now that the medicos have had their time with the “POW” that got “released”.
Excuse me, but I have a relative – a great-uncle – who disappeared on a courier run during the Civil War. As far as I’m concerned, that flag includes him.
The non-courant can stuff its opinions right back in its piehole.
Hartford Courant…. Courant sounds like Currant a currant is a dried up raisin or berry,,,
Since the paper likes putting out shit like this they should have a new name.
The Hardford Dingleberry.
The hippies have a better idea now to get back all of our MIA’s. #pow/mia. That will get them home. And the hippies can feel good that they “Did Something” for the missing and/or captives.
Are you fucking fruitcakes almost done jerking each other off yet?
STFU, Dewald.
