Change that won’t buck the party

| October 15, 2008

We Republicans all know how John McCain doesn’t kowtow to the party. Lord, we know. Barack Obama tries to present that same image, but his record falls woefully short. In today’s Wall Street Journal Peter Wallison recounts the legislation in 2005 that died in committee that could have prevented the economic woes we’re suffering if Obama had shown a little bit of that maverick spirit that so endears him to the media;

In the summer of 2005, a bill emerged from the Senate Banking Committee that considerably tightened regulations on Fannie and Freddie, including controls over their capital and their ability to hold portfolios of mortgages or mortgage-backed securities. All the Republicans voted for the bill in committee; all the Democrats voted against it. To get the bill to a vote in the Senate, a few Democratic votes were necessary to limit debate. This was a time for the leadership Sen. Obama says he can offer, but neither he nor any other Democrat stepped forward.

Instead, by his own account, Mr. Obama wrote a letter to the Treasury Secretary, allegedly putting himself on record that subprime loans were dangerous and had to be dealt with. This is revealing; if true, it indicates Sen. Obama knew there was a problem with subprime lending — but was unwilling to confront his own party by pressing for legislation to control it.

So, by writing the letter to the Treasury Secretary, he admitted that he knew right from wrong, but by voting present, he couldn’t summon the testicular fortitude to actually do something about it. If Barack Obama gets to the White House, we can depend on him to behave the same way. He’ll be the puppet of Nancy Pelosi, Charlie Rangel, Steny Hoyer, Barney Franks, Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer. With that idiot Joe Biden pulling the strings. They’ll treat him like they treat him now…a figurehead, cover for their errors. And we all know who’ll pay the price for a gutless coward who’ll refuse to lead.
