Congress votes to restore COLA reduction
Last year, Congress voted to cut the cost of living allowance for disabled veterans, widows and military retirees. Yesterday they voted to restore those cuts. And since this shaping up to be a form of class warfare, they also voted to make up for that cut cut from Medicare in 2024. According to Stars & Stripes;
The fate of the repeal legislation is unclear at this point. House Republicans offset the impact on the deficit of restoring COLA by adding cuts to Medicare that would take effect in 2024. Democrats have come out against this aspect of the legislation.
“We are simply robbing one group of deserving people – Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security recipients – to pay for helping another group of deserving people, our military retirees. This is just a shell game, and it is irresponsible,” Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said in a press release.
I’m pretty sure that the cut to Medicaid will never happen, since Congress has ten years to buy back the votes from Medicaid recipients, however, I don’t remember Adam Smith defending the cuts to veterans’ pensions last year. I don’t remember him saying that cuts to the pensions of the disabled and widows was irresponsible.
Since the only bill in regards to the cut to veterans’ COLA that Harry Reid will allow for a vote, the Bernie Sanders bill, the one that adds more spending to the budget instead of less, you can bet that it will never make it to the president’s desk.

I am glad something has been done to restore what they “stole” from our veterans, widows and retirees. At least it is a step in the right direction. I do wonder what their impetus was though. I mean to do an about face like that. Dems are pretty devious in my book and there is always a backstory or something they think is coming their way in order for them to do anything for anyone except welfare suckers and illegal aliens.
Previous articles here indicate that the whole point was to make Republicans look bad to their own constituencies, and then make the Democrats look benevolent to the same.
Yes, it would be nice to see COLA restored, but it never should have been removed in the first place. The whole thing is an artful treachery.
All the reports I have seen said the COLA issue was stripped from the bill?
Saw this being mentioned on the news last night. Question was asked “So, where do we get the funds to pay for this”?. Bullshit response ensued, instead of the correct response of, we are cutting into foreign aid spending.
Getting real tired of fucking world welfare while ignoring taking care of our own that actually rate it.
Very few in Congress push or vote for bills that do the right thing, whether funding for vets, or reducing out of control spending. Most of them only do it for political reasons, i.e. buying votes or increasing their own power and wealth. And that goes for BOTH sides of the isle.
The debt ceiling increase was the perfect opportunity to restore COLA, but Boehner has no balls and sees no gain in it for himself. Instead, more spending for all their little friends, screw the rest of us.
Political bullshit by Dems. They wouldn’t vote for it in the House unless the COLA cuts were in. So, the cuts were put in. It was sent to the Senate and Reid said that he would be benevolent and not screw the soldier.
It’s just monkeys dancing on a stage to get people to love them more. Unfortunately, it’s Joe who gets screwed.
