Val, while I never flew a glider, a bunch of family and friends have. I can see the attraction. Back in the day, landing a single engine light aircraft without power was not uncommon, and sometimes planned as a training exercise.
All just to say, whether in an actual glider or having cut the power, being up in the air without the noise of an engine is quite an experience, and I suspect not unlike the attraction of jumping out of perfectly good aircraft with benefit of parachute.

Valkyrie – look at it another way – a glider is the only airplane specifically MADE to stay up without needing fuel. Here’s an ad someone sent me for a foot- launchable glider
which fits in a car-towablke trailer…. as you watch the footage, remember – “no engine noise”. http://player

@52 David WOW just WOW. I have taken a ride in a two seat glider and it was amazing. But this…man, I don’t often wish to be a wealthy person. I am very content with what I have but I would love to be able to own that glider. I was mesmerized watching the video. Where I live there are so many hills you could just walk off of and great winds and thermals to ride for hours. Lots of gliders around here. Maybe, someday if Santa says I am a “very good” boy (and I win the Lotto). It looks like you buy it as a complete outfit, trailer and all. Way cool David, thank you for posting that.

Valkyrie, I am sorry to hear about the situation you wrote of. I do not know anything about South Africa or their internal policies regarding child welfare. I do hope you are able to get this resolved to the benefit of the children. I wish I were of more help. I saw your post @13 last night but did not have time to respond. Valkyrie you are among friends. So please never feel like you have to apologize for writing anything. Especially something as important as the safety of children. Have a good day and I do wish you all the best in resolving this issue. You and the children are in my thoughts and prayers for God’s blessings and safety.

@13: Be careful on this, Val. I’m not sure why you feel obligated to do something about some guy in another country on the word of someone you don’t know sending you an email.

Val. I re-read your post and it looks like there isn’t anything you can do. The South African sex registry is not like ours. It is NOT open to the public and is used exclusively to check on job applicants for positions in the mental health field and working with children. I have to conclude that the deported individual is a citizen of So Africa, so there is nothing to do about it through US agencies. I do not know whether he would be permitted to return to the US at all, but I understand that a deportation for an aggravated felony bars re-entry for 20 years. This is an issue that DHS (USCIS) can answer.

@ 13 Val … Be careful. You don’t know these people. They are not US citizens (USPERS) therefore, short of a treaty and or UN style agreement on sexual predators … who knows what he should have done.
Unfortunately, my advise may not be what you want to hear!
STAY AWAY. The scum bag is out of the US and he ain’t coming back.

Thanks to everyone for the advice, I’ve decided all I can do is send the court records with HIS handwritten confession so that is may help the Father in his divorce and custody case. I will not be getting more involved. There is things going on in that town that I really don’t want to be involved in and even though he can’t come back to the states his family can.

The glider video was breath taking! (it sorta began like The Flintstones meet The Jetsons) I have no desire to jump out of a plane but I would love to ride in a glider. The only thing I knew about them until I followed ya’ll’s links was what I read in 50 Shades of Grey (don’t judge me!) That looks like an amazing way to start the day by “Chasing the Dawn”.
Has anyone seen the videos about those flying suits? I would love to tour Scotland by flying above it in one of those suits. Too bad I’m such a chicken little!

I put food out for the birds in the morning, then at noon, and again when I went to put gas in the tank, to fill it. There is NO HEET available anywhere. Period. My car will have to tough it out.
I also checked the furnace vent stack on the roof, to make sure it clears the snowline. Otherwise,I have to get an extendable paint roller up there to clear it a bit.
The wind in your face is like a blowtorch, and I am NOT going out in that again, not even if I’m offered a winning lottery ticket. Keep the money, I ain’t goin’ out there.
It is now so cold, if you guys go outside, you’ll freeze off everything you’re famous for. So don’t go outside.

@13Valkyrie,
Let me start with a caveat. I’ve spent a fair amount of time working abroad in law and law enforcement, and my overriding rule is this: Don’t make things worse. Not all problems can be fixed. Especially in the domestic arena. Think hard about likely outcomes.
South Africa has the Criminal Law (Sexual Offenses and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007, Chapter Six of which provides for the National Registration of Sex Offenders (those convicted of committing a sexual offense against children or the mentally disabled). Sec. 50(1)(b)(i) of the Act seems to say that some foreign convictions can be considered for inclusion into the Register. Of note is the purpose of the NRSO: Namely, to ensure that offenders are prohibited from working in positions where they may have access to vulnerable group, and in some cases to inform the relevant authorities re certain care-giving situations. In other words, unlike in the US, it’s not a publicly accessible registry. Inclusion on the NRSO is by court order, and it appears that it is up to the state (not the individual) to bring the fact of offenses to the attention of the court.
The foregoing comes from 5 minutes of work: It’s not an answer; it’s not a paraphrase; it’s not advice; it’s barely a guess. Take it with many grains of salt (not the least of which is that I hate typing on an iPhone). This isn’t the sort of thing you Google. If you’re still curious, I would call someone at the NRSO to answer your question. Or, better yet, if it’s as bad as you say, your SA compatriot shouldn’t mind calling a lawyer.
P.S. For some reason (and I say this non-judgmentally), I’m confused by the phrase
“my step-daughter’s step-father.” It sounds, in my mind, like, e.g.: I marry “Amy,” who has a child, “Betty,” whom I adopt. Betty is now my step-daughter. Amy and I divorce, and I remarry “Christine.” Christine is now Amy’s step-mother (and thus, my step-daughter’s step-mother).

Mom and Dad Divorce and then each re-marries.
The child no has two step parents…. one (stepfather… aka perv) married to child’s Mom, one (stepmother aka Valkyrie) married to child’s Dad. Just guessing, perhaps wrongly.

@ 65 GDContrator – Nope you hit it dead on.
@ 64 John – Like I said before I believe I over explained in, sorta in a rant form. I’ve learned I can’t get him put on the registry unless he reoffends there, which is what I was trying to stop from happening. All I can do is help the current Father get custody of his kids, by sending the court transcripts. Or that is my hope, not much else I can do from here. It just sucks when you learn you can’t save everyone, and some don’t wish to be saved. Thank you though for the Google time and advice. (I too hate typing on those little bitty keyboards.)

Yes it is 2 women on a Mil/blog sending cat pics to each other, don’t worry just so we don’t lose our Street Creds we send photos of the kitties posing with guns. 😉
Valkyrie – No, can only shoot pix on cell. Send to my e-mail.
Did you get my e-mail w/Word doc?

Ummm.. Hey Guys! I know I’m not a Vet and I also know that every club group or organization has their own rituals and things they do. But can someone explain this to me (without having to kill me after?) Anyone from Colorado here?
Val: my guess – I’m not from CO, and I stress this is a guess – is that some time in the 1950s or early 1960s a WWII vet who was a member of the VFW post died and had expressed a wish for his remains to be placed there. (The story says the bones are believed to be “over 50 years old”.) I’d further guess the post did so.
At the time, Longmont would have been a much smaller town than it is today. (I’d guess between 5,000 and 15,000 folks.) I’d further guess that doing this was probably not widely discussed outside a small subset of the VFW membership.
Over time, the identity and memory of the incident may have been lost as those with firsthand knowledge passed away. Knowledge that the guy’s remains were there may have been lost completely until after the flood.
I’d take those stories of the bones being used in “Last Man’s Club” ceremonies with a grain of salt. Could be true, but without hearing firsthand accounts from participants myself I’m personally rather skeptical.
