Sunday Morning Feel Good Story
Open Channel D sends us a link to our first feel good stories this morning about a family in Louisiana which picked up where the police left off in a search for Bethany Arceneaux who had been kidnapped by her child’s father, Scott Thomas.
Later that evening, law enforcement officials found Thomas’ car near an abandoned sugarcane field in a rural area of Lafayette Parish, La., Judice said.
One of Arceneaux’s shoes was found in the car, while the other had been left in the parking lot of the daycare where she had been last seen.
Authorities searched the sugarcane field Wednesday night and all day Thursday, but to no avail, Judice said. The cane towers as high as eight feet tall and was “a brutal search area” for officials, he said.
It wasn’t until Friday morning, when Arceneaux’s family members conducted their own search in the same area that they came upon a secluded, abandoned house behind a cluster of trees.
The house was directly across the street from the field where Thomas abandoned his car, but only the home’s roof was visible from the road, Judice said.
“[The family] converged on a piece of property about a mile from where the car was found,” Judice said. “One of the family members heard what he thought was a scream.”
Arceneaux’s cousin approached the home, kicked in the door in and entered, Judice said. Inside, he found Thomas with the woman. Thomas then began stabbing Arceneaux, and a confrontation ensued.
“The cousin, who was armed, began firing several shots at Thomas,” Judice said. “After a couple of shots, [Arceneaux] was able to get free of him and they escorted her out of the house.”
The next story, from Chief Tango, comes from Oakland where a man found three fellows trying to break into his truck. When he confronted them, an altercation ensued that was broken up by a security guard. The three left and then returned making gestures like they were carrying guns;
The truck owner called police.
But before officers arrived the 30-year-old man and his accomplice returned and made more verbal threats and gestures simulating that they had guns, police said.
The truck owner, who had armed himself with a pistol he had at work at that point, told police the 30-year-old man started coming toward him and he tried to warn him off. But when the man kept coming he fired one shot at him, hitting him in the leg.
He told investigators he fired the shot because he believed his life was in danger.
The third story, involving Gonzaga University students doesn’t have a very happy ending;
Seniors Erik Fagan and Dainel McIntosh felt they needed to protect themselves in late October when a convicted felon came to their door asking for money. Fagan said he yelled for his roommate after trying to get the man to leave. McIntosh came down with his gun, which he has a concealed weapons permit for according to Fagan. The roommates said McIntosh scared the man off by flashing the gun.
The men called the Spokane Police Department and Campus Security. Police told them they did the right thing according to the roommates.
Unfortunately, Gonzaga has a “no guns” policy for it’s students, so they might be suspended. Which is probably still better than being mugged in their apartment by a felon.

There is no justice except for that which we take for ourselves.
I’ve seen that Gonzaga University story making the rounds and I got to thinking about something. (Warning, I’m not a lawyer and will happily stand corrected if this idea proves stupid).
The student handbook says students may not have handguns on campus or university owned property, and university officials explain the policy is in place for student safety.
If that is the stated reason behind the policy, then it’s obvious that Gonzaga failed to provide a safe environment. In fact, it could even be argued that they contributed to this incident. Would the students have any grounds to sue? Yes, this assumes they could afford the attorney or that they would want to stay at a university that prefers people get hurt or killed but still…
[…] This ain’t Hell… has your Sunday feel good story […]
Re Gonzaga U, I should have thought the “Soldiers of God” (Jesuits) would be more tolerant of self defense, seeing as how a soft word doesn’t always suffice.
The LA story reminds me of the movie Next of Kin with Patrick Swayze.
“WEAPONS, FIREWORKS & EXPLOSIVES
The presence and use of weapons on campus presents a potential threat to the safety of all community members. Use or display of weapons may result in threat or injury to self or others[…]Possession, use, display, sale or exchange of weapons at any location on campus, including University residential facilities and privately-owned vehicles, is prohibited.”
The Gonzaga policy continues but that’s enough. If the mere presence of weapons is a potential threat, then I suppose the campus police don’t carry any and that before the Spokane police appear on campus, they disarm. Oh, and when a dignitary shows up to speak, I’m sure his or her bodyguards are armed with only their wits.
Since 100% of pedophile priests are male, maybe they have made it illegal to be male on the same campus? Or, perhaps they have made it illegal to be in possession of a child as a way to cut down on pedophilia, because, making certain that non-pedophiles also do not have access to children realistically addresses the problem of pedophilia, right?
Speaking of dumbass criminals, hey, DullASS–let us know how your court case this week goes, m’kay?
Gonzaga’s new motto: Better a Student be Dead than Have a Gun.
Gonzaga placed the two fellows on probation. They were not expelled. They are reportedly appealing their probation. Oh, their guns were confiscated. No word on whether the property was returned to them or their parents.
Guns to be released to them: http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/11/13/school-authorities-return-guns-to-2-gonzaga-university-students-who-had-been-on/
