Kerry offers Syria a deal

| September 9, 2013

Apparently, John Kerry offered Syria a deal in order to avoid a military strike. He told them that they have until the end of the week to turn over all of their chemical weapons to the international community and the US won’t make splodies at them, according to Stars & Stripes. The Russians seemed amenable;

Kerry told reporters in London early Monday that Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding the use of chemical weapons by surrendering control of “every single bit” of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week.

Hours later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov promised to push its ally Syria to place its chemical weapons under international control and then dismantle them quickly to avert U.S. strikes. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem immediately embraced the proposal. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged acceptance.

That seemed to raise prospects for avoiding an expansion of the Syrian civil war, and spokesmen said the administration would take a “hard look” at the proposal. But the matter was far from settled. The White House continued to build its case for action, with Obama taping six television network interviews for late Monday and administration officials briefing more members of Congress as they returned from summer recess. Obama will address the nation Tuesday night.

Of course, the White house is skeptical that Syria will comply quickly and completely, so they’re still going through the motions of preparing for war. The President is supposed to go on six networks to push his “punishment” solution. Kerry also made the impending attack seem more palatable by promising that it would be ” unbelievably small, limited kind of effort” accodring to Politico;

…Kerry’s comments Monday caused even some of the president’s strongest backers for military intervention to call the White House’s outreach a disaster.

[…]

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) strongly favors a strike on Syria, but criticized Kerry’s comments.

“I don’t understand what he means by that,” Rogers said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday. “This is part of the problem. That’s a very confusing message — certainly a confusing message to me that he would offer that as somebody who believes this is in our national security interest.”

Yeah, well, that’s what happens when you send out John Kerry, a known serial waffler, to define your foreign policy. The boy can barely speak English on a good day and now he’s the face and voice of American policy. Kerry and Hagel are such a clown act.

Ah, okay, now I see how this is going to play out. Assad will turn over a token number of weapons and then Obama and the Dems will declare victory and assure us all that it was Obama’s steeley-eyed resolve that caused Assad to “back down.” Assad will continue to slaughter his own people primarily with conventional weapons and we can all get back to our regular lives.

” Eyeeeee FART in your General Direction!!!”

ohio

Kerry, Hagel and 0bama together and you have the classic “circle jerk”.

rb325th

@1 pretty much how it will go.

SGT Kane

@1 Russia just dumped all over that plan, by offering to oversee the turning over of of Syria’s chemical weapons to “world control”, so rather than appearing steely eyed President Obama will appear to be a much abused banjo that’s been played hard by Putin at a death metal concert where he wrestled a bear.

UpNorth

A “serial waffler” employed by a serial liar? What could possibly go wrong?

TMB

We’re going through all this trouble for an “unbelievably small” airstrike. So we’re going to mortgage international law, goodwill, and our influence in the community just so that at the end of the week everyone can shrug and go “meh?”

Ex-PH2

I don’t see this turning out well.

It does not fit the administrations’ agenda (whatever that is) to let the ‘world’ have ‘control’.

It will make the administration look weak and ineffectual, which is already is.

It will not give bodaprez an opportunity to shoot off anything but his mouth.

2/17 Air Cav

Today, I heard former Speaker Newt Ginger–Goodwrench–Goodrich–whatever compare this to the Cuban missile crisis. I guess it escaped the oh-so-brilliant Newt that obamaman created this crisis and JFK was dealt one. Other than that–and the threat of global annihilation that JFK faced, yeah, I guess they are real similar. Similar. Yeah.

TMB

Over on Doctrine Man on Facebook they’re comparing the “unbelievably small” remarks to sexual impotence. One person called the airstrike “Operation Just the Tip.” It’s hilarious.

USMCE8Ret

So Syria is supposed to surrender all they have by the end of the week? That’s quite a logistical feat.

I guess they’re going to load up the mini-van of all their WMD’s, and drive it over to the Russian consulate and drop it off. Of course, Assad will have to get a couple of buddies of his to load up the stuff, and give them some pizza and beer afterwards.

…”John Kerry, a known serial waffler”. Meh…skerry is a “twat waffle” and thank you Lord he isn’t POTUS, either.

Twist

@11, I wonder how many of those chemical weapons shells will be stamped “made in Iraq”.

Old Trooper

@5: If you look at the international news, they appear to be saying that Putin drove the idea of Assad giving up his chem weapons to Russia and that Assad agreed with that plan. Basically, Obumbles had to send John F-ing Kerry (did you know he served in Vietnam?) out quickly to add the American unltimatum in order to appear to be in charge, when everyone knows that it was, and will be, Putin. Plus, with this agreement, no matter if it takes a week or a year to remove the weapons, if the US attacks, they will be the bad guy. If they cry and whine about how long it’s taking, they will appear weak on the world stage.

Well played, Mr. Putin, well played.

Getting the impression that bodaprez is coming to be regarded as an upstart and a little kid, and shuffled off into the corner — where, frankly, I think he belongs.

If Russia manages to deflate this growing mess before it does explode, I may even send Vlad a ‘Thank you’ note. That’ll put me on the list of White House enemies, for sure.

Ex-PH2

And Kerry can’t keep his big, fat, stupid mouth shut.

“It has to be real, it has to be tangible” Or else? Or what?

At the same time, the opposition is voicing itself out loud now.

Let’s hope the only battle over this will be in Congress, not in the Middle East.

(These are ‘breaking news’ blurbs, not full stories.)

Old Trooper

@15: Russia did deflate it. Obumbles always said that they were in favor of the diplomatic route, so Putin offered the diplomatic route and now Obumbles and sKerry will have to take it, or look worse than they already do on the world stage.

I said it, before; you have a community organizer going up against a KGB Colonel. No one put money on the community organizer coming out on top in this one.
