Lone Survivor trailer
I saw this a few days ago, but I was pretty pissed that Mark Wahlberg was playing Marcus Luttrell. However I had about thirty emails about it this morning, so I guess y’all want to talk about it. Yeah, I’ll go watch it for Marcus, but the popcorn better be especially good.
By the way, you should probably read the book before you see the movie, if you haven’t already, so you’ll understand the movie.
Category: Who knows
From what I understand from speaking with Marcus a couple of years ago when the movie was in the talking stages, at that time, he was to be fully involved in this movie, from the choice of actors to the script itself and that the movie wouldn’t be a ‘go’ without his blessings. So I’m hoping the choice of Wahlberg as Marcus was with his okay. Anxiously awaiting the movie, after reading the book 4 + times.
I’ve found that the movie never does the book justice. I usually rather read the book after so I’m not so disappointed with the movie when I watch it.
The trailer looks good. I’m not a big Wahlberg fan either, but if he does justice to the story of what happened, I think I can forgive him. A little bit.
What’s with the Wahlberg hate? Is he a valor thief?
I’ve liked Wahlberg since I saw him in “Shooter.” Some of his work is better than others, but I still like him as an actor.

Some false bravado bullshit regarding anyone trying to hijack a plane he is on and he would go all Hollywood ass kicking on the would be terrorist….something along those lines if I recall..
“Saying his comments were “ridiculous … irresponsible … [and] insensitive,” actor Mark Wahlberg has now apologized for saying he would have stopped 9/11 hijackers if he had been on one of the planes, Reuters reports.
Actor Mark Wahlberg, , talks about what he thinks would have happened if he had been on one of the planes hijacked on Sept. 11, 2001:
“If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’ ”

I don’t look at any actor or actress as normal — I look at them as actors. Period. They have nothing to do with reality, as a general rule. As much as I like to see Wahlberg on the screen, I wouldn’t cross the street to meet him.
And for a completely asinine comment like that, somebody should have decked him. Twice.
Holy shit, what an idiot. That reminds me of all the stupid shit Nugent has said about what a bad ass he would’ve been in Nam if he had went. What a tool.
I only hope that in promoting the movie the studio stresses that it is based on an actual story and not merely the figment of some imaginative writer. The fact that this happened should leave movie goers with an entirely different perspective.
Just as long as a Pavehawk picks him up at the end
Oh another SEAL movie? man those guys really are the Quiet Professionals that all SOF claims to be…
@9 I agree. Everyone thinks Nugent is a hero of the right. I call BS. I remember reading him avoiding the draft. It’s easy to talk….
I’ve read the book a few times. Hopefully the movie will do it justice, but I’m not holding my breath.
Never forget … actors are paid a lot of money to pretend they are someone else. They’re good at pretending. Not as good as politicians but near enough.
I kind of always liked Marky Mark.
Just saying….
Marky Mark.
Head, meet desk. Repeat.
GT, you stole my line!
As for the movie, it looks interesting. I’ve met Marcus before and he seems like a great guy. If he had his fingers in this movie from the start, then Marky Mark was his choice. Maybe he was a fan of “The Funky Bunch” back in the day.
Mark Wahlberg is several feet shorter than Lutrell, so I hope he can act taller.
I’m neutral on Wahlberg, but in the bigger picture, this is probably a good choice. He’s a big enough name to draw a large crowd, and the more young people that go to see Lone Survivor and understand what happened, the better.
Wahlberg likes beating the shit outta people, just doesn’t like the potential of the prison time he would have gotten from it. He wasn’t exactly the most law-abiding “yute” back in the day, which is kinda where my issue with him lies.
That and his stand on guns, but meh.
Finally, no way in hell some chowdahead can pull off a Texas accent for an entire movie. Ain’t. No. Way.
“I believe Charlton Heston is America’s best villain because he loves guns so much. Maybe he should get the award for being president of the National Rifle Association.”
“Well, I would love it if they could take all the guns away. Unfortunately, you can’t do that so you hope that good people in the world have them to protect the people who can’t protect themselves,” “Certainly, I haven’t used a gun anywhere other than on a movie set and I’d like to see if we could take them all away. It would be a beautiful thing.”
This from a guy who makes a LOT of movies with LOTS of gun-related violence. Take from it what you will. YMMV.
NHSparky: hey, at least he realizes that Utopia is fantasy and that the real world doesn’t work that way.
I dunno, Hondo–if the guy had the courage of his convictions he’d still be putting out shitty music with the Funky Bunch.
But then again, conviction is something that gets sorely tested the larger the paycheck gets.
NHSparky: c’mon – cut him some slack about his musical career. We all did stupid stuff we regretted later when we were young . . . . (smile)
@13 A little of Nugent in his own words from High Times in 1977, Nugent is telling the story to the reporter about how he failed the physical on purpose. He went to this length to avoid the draft, and now he wants you to believe what a bad-ass he is…he should have called his one sh1tty song Chicken Hawk Fever…. I got my physical notice 30 days prior to. Well, on that day I ceased cleansing my body. No more brushing my teeth, no more washing my hair, no baths, no soap, no water. Thirty days of debris build. I stopped shavin’ and I was 18, had a little scraggly beard, really looked like a hippie. I had long hair, and it started gettin’ kinky, matted up. Then two weeks before, I stopped eating any food with nutritional value. I just had chips, Pepsi, beer-stuff I never touched-buttered poop, little jars of Polish sausages, and I’d drink the syrup, I was this side of death, Then a week before, I stopped going to the bathroom. I did it in my pants. poop, piss the whole shot. My pants got crusted up. […] So I went in, and those guys in uniform couldn’t believe the smell. They were ridiculin’ me and pushin’ me around and I was cryin’, but all the time I was laughin’ to myself. When they stuck the needle in my arm for the blood test I passed out, and when I came to they were kicking me into the wall. Then they made everybody take off their pants, and I did, and this sergeant says, “Oh my God, put those back on! You fucking swine you!” Then they had a urine test and I couldn’t piss, But my poop was just like ooze, man, so I poop in the cup and put it on the counter. I had poop on my hand and my arm. The guy almost puked. I was so proud. I knew I had these chumps beat. The last thing I remember was wakin’ up in the ear test booth and they were… Read more »
@13 Of course Teddy later claimed he made the story up and just rode a student deferment to avoid the draft…..make of it what you will
He’s as much a hypocrite as Damon and Wahlberg…
For my part, I don’t much care for celebrity gun control advocates, but I care even less for those who are convicted violent felons who beat an old man nearly to death. Therein lies my objection to most things Wahlberg.
Wahlberg reminds me of a former boss…. thought because he was young and athletic no one needed a gun. Everything could and should be handled with nothing more than a baseball bat. Never could seem to give a good answer to “so if you’re not home and your wife is attacked, what do you do then?”
Wahlberg is an OK enough actor, but at 5’7″ he doesn’t come close to Marcus Luttrell’s stature. We’ll see about the accent. I guess if Mel Gibson can play William Wallace, Mark Wahlberg can play Marcus Luttrell.
BTW, Marcus commented in an interview that, for all the action movies that he’s done, Wahlberg couldn’t shoot worth a damn when they started filming. I guess the actors got quite a few lessons on that and everything else.
With Marcus Luttrell involved in all aspects of the movie, I’m sure it will be faithful to the book. The Danny Dietz family posted that they were at a screening for families and approve wholeheartedly of the result.
Wahlberg!!!???
But if the families are ok with it, I guess I’ll go see it, to support them and Mr. Luttrell.
As he wrote (on the Midway) in my copy of Lone Survivor, “Never Forget!” This moves us in that direction, Wahlberg, or not.
Because the only paperwork on Ted Nugent, is a student deferment, and that his number was not called.
The High Times interview is just a story, nothing else. If true, he would have been hoisted on the shoulders of every stupid hippy of the day, and made to sing anti-war folk songs all night long. But, we already know THAT didn’t happen.
But then, you guys are all ready to forgive Marky Mark and his ignorant Brady rhetoric, because he makes gun movies, and you hope THIS one, unlike all the OTHER ones, makes up for him being stupid. “Yeah, but Sarge, he’s just an actor!”
Yup…and Nuge is just a rock and roll star that really really likes guns, the NRA, and American freedom. I’ll take the red, white, and blue reality of Ted Nugent, over the dumbass fantasy of Mark Wallberg…any day.
I’m still not sure how I feel about this. The SEALs need to tone it down a bit with the movies and such, the ‘silent professionals’ we keep hearing them tell us they are. Marcus’s book was awesome, though I did read a few things about some people in the SOF community calling BS on a few aspects of the book, particularly CPT Murphy letting the team vote on the fate of the goat farmers. Not sure how accurate any of that might be, but I will gladly give Marcus the benefit of the doubt, the man has been through hell. I will probably see it when it comes out. I like Wahlberg, Shooter is one of my favorite movies and so is The Other Guys. Yeah he’s a typical Hollywood hypocrite, but that’s par for the course. Mostly I just get exasperated when ‘another’ SEAL movie comes out. Yes, SEALs are badass, we get it. Next slide…..
*LT Murphy* rather….brain fart with the Navy ranks….
It could have been Jamie Fox, Channing Tatum, or Leonardo Dicapacrio….
In retrospect it’s not a terrible decision and he was great in one of my favorite war movies, Three Kings.
It looks like a serious movie and Good Vibrations can do serious just fine.
Read the book many times but I have my doubts about wahlberg playing Marcus luttrell just hope they do make every effort to keep it real and if Marcus is involved I’m sure they will…right?
@32 a friend of mines linked me to this site http://www.onviolence.com/ which did a review on his book (they hated it) and they had mentioned the same thing in reference to the vote. They also go on to say that the size of the Taliban force is also in great dispute as well as several other things in his book. The website is authored by two brothers, one who claims he was a soldier who saw combat and the other brother who is a pacifist, I thought it was going to be one of those duality websites where they had different opinions but they seem to agree on a lot of things. Judging by their commenter’s and some things I have read in their site it appears to be a left wing blog. An example would be how they object to using the word “terrorist” when referring to the insurgents in Iraq and also “al Qaeda in Iraq” apparently claiming that they never were in Iraq. They go on to criticize Marcus by saying he’s using the deaths of his team for politics and to bash liberals and the media. By this point I was angered by several things and just left. I am not in the military yet so I can’t really call BS or say much about their sight on a technical bases(in referance to the wars) so if you guys who have been to Iraq and Afghanistan have some spare time check the sight out and let me know what you think about these guys and what they are writing about Marcus, his book, and the wars in general. My friend keeps busting my balls about how “the right wingers in the military are full of it” (he doesn’t say that in a serious note, just busting my balls). yet he keeps referring to things written on the linked website which is why I’m coming to the experts (you guys). As far as Wahlberg, the only good I see from him is the fact that he may attract a large crowd to see the film.
It is so comical to me every time I run into someone around my age that didn’t serve, but now wishes they did. All of y’all are going to run into this later on when their kids all start asking “what did you do during the wars, daddy”. (Iraq/Afghanistan) We didn’t start getting wannabee’s until after the dedication of the Wall in 82′ and we started getting some recognition of our service. You guys have them all ready. Nugent did what the vast majority of all generations do, sat out the war. No problem, but just don’t say what a badass you’d have been had you gone. Wahlberg? You can’t find any “pro gun pro military” in Hollywood today so why not. As some have said…it could be worse, like Tom Cruise.
the Nuge rules, no if ands or buts about it.
Marky Mark is an actor, and all of them are worthless pieces of shit. i do think they should have gotten dawayne johnson to play luttrell, hes about the only real bad ass in hollywood, and the only person that can speak out in support of Bush and not a one of the hollywood liberals said shit.
The Nuge is a draft dodging bitch who wraps himself in the flag to boost record sales. He’s a loudmouthed phony who talks a good game but won’t put his money where his mouth is. He got two deferments, one for college, and another because of a physical. I’m sure he exaggerated the lengths he went to in failing that physical, because he exaggerates everything, but he has stated on more than one occasion that he was going to go “get (his) ass blown off in Vietnam.”
dude was a racist thug back in the day
I have an idea. Instead of seeing this movie in the theater, take the money you’d have paid and donate it to any of the various SOF charities whose purpose it is to aid our special ops brothers or their widows/kids/parents in their loss. Wait for the DVD to come out and watch it as a large group to minimize the money Hollywood makes off of the deaths of heroes. I’m for supporting Marcus Luttrell with whatever path his life takes him, but unless they’re donating a percentage of the proceeds to any of the various support organizations, it’s blood money.
This book peeves me. For one thing I doubt the guy would get the name of the operation he was involved with wrong.
Operation Red Wing was a nuclear test if I remember right. Operation Red Wings is the one he was involved in.
What reality has a Captain voting on killing people. That sounds completely Made for Drama in Movie…
In his own report he said around 20-30… In the book it becomes hundreds.
This goes on the shelf probably right next to that Carnivore book.
I would like to read a book about Turbine 33 instead.
Long time reader, do not post often. Very much appreciative of all the writers on the site, as well as the comments, as they provide a wealth of knowledge and experience I do not have.
Stumbled across a website that has an alternative narrative re: Operation Redwings that paints
the event in a slightly different light. Link provided below is to journalist’s personal website, with book notes, and PDF of original manuscript.
http://www.darack.com/sawtalosar/misinformation.php
Although the First Team had nothing to do with Operation Red Wings, the 1st Cavalry Division’s helicopters (Chinooks, Apaches, Black Hawks) were used in the making of the movie.
The boys (and girls) from the Air Cav Brigade got 65 hours of flying time on the movie company’s dime and they said it was pretty challenging stuff. They also said director Peter Berg and the cast took great care of them.
