Glock Block in OR

The Washington Times reports that Jennings Lodge in Milwaukie, Clackamas County, Oregon has had it up to here (knife hand at forehead) with crime and they’ve declared themselves a “Glock Block” to fight off the criminals with the fliers pictured above and their CCW permits. Unlike Washington State, Oregon requires that a CCW permit applicant “Demonstrates competence with a handgun”, so it’s not like a lot of women similar to the one we read about yesterday are pulling over cops to learn about their gun after they’ve purchased it.

Community members have actually pursued conceal carry permits in order to fend off the crime wave, which includes everything from stolen lawn ornaments to vandalism, the Daily Mail reported.

“We’re starting a new group,” said Clackamas County resident, Coy Toloman, in a KOIN report. “We don’t feel neighborhood watch is sufficient, and we don’t feel the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is sufficient.”

Ms. Toloman, fueled by the theft of a favorite statue from her front porch – and subsequent failed chase of the suspect, who “got away” – has taken a class to obtain a concealed carry permit, KOIN reported.

The only thing that troubles me about the story is that it’s considered news that citizens are arming themselves against criminals

Maybe they’re starting a new trend in their state.

I hope so. It will make me and those that I know carry feel a little easier and the criminals to not.

Glenn Reynolds is posting stuff calling into question the author of the MS article- basically saying that her ‘research’ may not be fully truthful.

More guns, less crime. We all know that 10 out of 9 criminals ALWAYS prefer unarmed victims!!

Surprisingly, most people still feel the police can, and will protect them. I have talked to many who seem to feel arming themselve would contravene what the police want!

I’m as pro gun as anybody here and a CCW permit holder as well, but I’m curious about how concealed weapons are going to have an effect on a crime wave that runs the gamut from “stolen lawn ornaments to vandalism” according to the article quoted.

Assaults and burglaries, I could understand as those are crimes that could be thwarted by an armed victim. But stolen lawn ornaments and vandalism? How is being armed going to affect those crimes which presumably are not discovered until long after the perpetrator has fled the scene?

I’m all for defending one’s self and property. And while I can understand the sentiment here, I think that proactively announcing “we don’t call 911” is legally and otherwise just plain stupid.

You want to make a loose collective of folks that are equipped and capable of defending themselves and thier neighbors, great. State as much and why. Heck, go as far as making up some signs like an alarm company that one can put in the front of thier houses if they really want (or maybe just one at the beginning of thier neighborhood like the “Jennings Lodge Armed Residents Society” or something along those lines, etc.)

But don’t announce in the same breath as minor property theft “we don’t call 911”-you’re just opening yourself and your neighborhood to an entirely different level of scrutinization now, let alone if someone actually gets into a shooting there.

@6 Apparently they intend to start shooting vandals and lawn ornament pranksters….

Twist

If someone shoots someone stealing a garden gnome then it will make National news headlines.

@6 – I think just making it public that you’re putting the vandals on notice that you’re armed could be a good deterrent.

I think that is their ultimate right to defend their lives and property against people stealing or attacking them. Someone willing to walk up on a porch and steal a statue today will be willing to walk into a house tomorrow. That statue wasn’t taken because it was pretty it was taken because it was scrap metal. If the police are only going to treat it as petty crime well I guess it is up to the people of the neighborhood to take care of themselves. In my neighborhood, the police would be more for cleanup than for prevention. I also think maybe the newscast was for a warning more than anything.

Better be careful and have a strong knowledge of Oregon’s use of force statues and rulings. Zimmerman ring a bell?

Look at the big picture, guys. What we have here is a small section of Americans arming and organizing themselves because their government has failed in it’s municipal duty to protect them and their property.
We’ve seen this type of organization before, historically. Small armed bands, organizing to do the jobs the government is unable or unwilling to do…

I agree with you crucible. Any good attorney would be all over that flyer.

#13, reminds me of something else:

“If you have a problem…if no one else can help…and if you can find them…maybe you can hire…The A- Team.”

I am glad that this is on the western side of the state. If it were on the eastern part of Oregon no one would bat an eye.

Stealing lawn ornaments?

That meth’s a helluva drug.
