Herson Torres; duped into felony
Scott sends us this link to the story of Herson Torres. It seems Mr. Torres was convinced by a pretty face, belonging to Carolina Villegas, to take up the offer of an invisible man on a cell phone to engage in a venture that could pay Torres $25,000. Sounds good, huh? well, the venture included robbing banks;
Villegas introduced Torres to the man on the phone, Theo. He didn’t offer a last name. Theo said he worked for the government and was recruiting Torres to test the defenses of Washington-area banks. The plan was simple: Theo would tell him which bank to target, and Torres would give a manager a note demanding money. Armed security officers, threats to call the police, or a wait that exceeded five minutes would be cause to flee. If he left with money, he’d be paid $25,000. Successful or not, he was guaranteed $2,500 for taking part. Torres would deliver any money recovered to a location near Richmond. If arrested, Torres should stay silent. Federal authorities would get him out in 24 hours.
So, to make a long story short, Torres made three failed attempts to rob banks, finally getting himself arrested. He told the incredible story to police, who checked and verified that he had been doing these bank jobs for Theo, who turned out to be Joshua Brady in Matoaca, VA, who police woke when they raided the house where he lived with his mother and grandmother and charged him with “impersonating a government official and three counts of attempted bank robbery”.
Neither Villegas nor any of the other robbery participants were ever charged. In October state prosecutors dropped the case against Torres without explanation. Vickery said it was because police were convinced Torres was tricked.
Brady, on the other hand, made a deal for three years of supervision in his mother’s home. I’m sure he’s learned his lesson [insert eyeroll here].
Torres, on the other hand has probably learned the lesson of his life and shoudl feel rather fortunate that he wasn’t shot by a bank guard.

Three attempted bank robberies and the punishment is having to stay where you live for 3 years? Retirement plan?
Was this job offer on Craigslist?
Rube Goldberg strikes again! Pretty face causes erection that hits guy between the eyes and knocks out all his brains. Happens all the time, but this does appear to be an extreme case.
He’s an idiot. I wouldn’t have taken the job w/o at least a health care plan.
Don’t need it now, AC. Obama has him covered. Or something.
@5. Does he qualify for unemployment? Maybe he spent many hours casing the banks and making a plan.
Herson, you’re a special kind of stupid, aren’t you?
Did Mr. Torres at least get laid? Nah, probably not.
sqrlhntr: laid? I’m guessing he never even got paid – period.
PT Barnum was right. If he didn’t underestimate.
Damned if PT Barnum wasn’t right, we see it every day. Anyone wanna bet if that dupe voted for the 0bamatollah?
Is it true that the percentage of people on earth have fallen prey to the dumbass virus that’s going around? I heard somewhere that it has somthing to do with getting a smartphone, ’cause it drains your brains or someting, and that’s why it’s called a smartphone.
Just wait ’til your car starts talking to you and drives itself.
Oh, wait… they already do.
Mommy!!!
Ex-PH2: for some folks, a car that drives itself would be a distinct improvement. That seems to be especially true where I live. (smile)
