Finally – A State Legislator With Some Common Sense
I’m sure you all remember the recent Baltimore “Pop-Tart Gun Crime“.
Well, it looks like at least one Maryland State Senator has some common sense – and is pissed enough to try and do something productive.
Sen. J. B. Jennings has introduced a bill that would describe “appropriate discipline that must be adhered to during counseling students of all grade levels in any Maryland school that uses public funds.” The bill reputedly includes a protocol for counseling and disciplining school administrators who violate these guidelines. And it further mandates that minor offenses such as the “Pot-Tart Gun Crime” not be entered into a child’s school records if it’s simply an instance of “kids being kids”.
Not sure what chance this has in the People’s Republic of Maryland legislature. But it seems a breath of fresh air nonetheless.
I’m normally not a fan of more laws. But when the lunatics are running the asylum and about to burn the place down, well, sometimes a new law just might be needed.

NHSparky: NR Pax is correct. IMO MD is well ahead of CO and IL (less Chicago) on the highway to “people’s republic” status. I’d say that NY, CA, DC (local), and NJ (maybe) are the only “states” closer. And I’m not sure about NJ.
I’m a little pessimestic about this, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Bet this teacher has on numerous occasions wore down a chalk to a pointy tip to where it sorta kinda resembles a bullet. What about the letters F, L, and P ? I mean they could be mistaken for shape of a gun. Same for number 7. Number 3 looks like buttocks…we can do this all day long folks.
Illinois hasn’t quite reached full retard status just yet, but is well on its way.
Hasn’t happened yet, but I’m waiting to see what happens when hunting season rolls around next fall and people on the road with hunting equipment are stopped for any reason by the cops. Turkey season is not too far away. Shawnee National Forest has some of the best deer and turkey hunting, period, and I have no idea how many people cross the state line from MO and KY into sourthern Illinois to go turkey hunting this time of year.
Do they really need a law like this? Isn’t it the principal and school board’s job to maintain a level of common sense, or are they the bunch that introduced this ‘zero tolerance’ crap to begin with?
Back when I was in school it was just the opposite. Overly tolerant of everything all the time. Not that it was any better.
Reaperman: in theory, this proposed law would not be needed. In practice, perhaps it is – as a “shot across the bow”, if nothing else. When school administrators are too stupid – or are unwilling – to use common sense in such situations, then legislative guidelines are perhaps the next necessary step.
One cannot legislate stupidity out of existence, nor one make people use common sense. But one can make both stupidity and failure to use common sense painful, particularly when public funding is involved.
This state senator is with the Air Guard. His bill came in after the submission deadline so it was sent packing to the Rules committee. Best of luck with that.

This is all great and wonderful, but in light of all the “OMG, it looks like a gun shape” bs going on… How are we supposed to talk about things like, I don’t know…the Revolutionary War or the Civil War, or, for that matter, ANYTHING that ever happend in the US or on foreign soil (WWI/WWII/Vietnam) without talking about guns? Or violence of any nature? They want everyone to believe our country was founded on good, solid, non-gun carrying Christian values, and that just isn’t it. How do you show a documentary on anything without showing guns?
Or…We I guess we could blur them out with images of the mighty fallen Twinkie.
This whole “Zero Tolerance” effort didn’t start in the wake of Sandy Hook. It started years ago.
I remember stories of a little kid getting suspended for bringing a GI Joe-sized 1911 replica to school.

I posted my previous comment before I read the entire OP. Now that I’ve read it — and Hondo’s appropos reply — I have one piece of advice. (It’s the same advice suggested by the YouTube video.)

I feel very fortunate that my kids were never caught up in the zero tolerance movement. My eldest son did draw a violent picture of soldiers killing aliens, but since it was a charter school, we were just called in to meet with his teacher. My youngest son accidentally left his cap gun in his backpack once. He was smart enough to keep it hidden and not tell anyone until he got home.
The best answer to this is to homeschool your kids. Then they can eat PopTarts into any shape they want and learn how to spell the word “gun”, picture and all.
@19 – Yes, and who knows? When they apply to one of the better universities, they probably won’t have to take remedial English classes (for spelling, grammar, puncutation, vocabulary building, etc.) because they’ll already be light years ahead of their contemporaries.
