Saturday feel good story

| March 9, 2013

In Spokane, Washington, Marshall Balduff was shot dead as he crawled through a doggie door to get at his girlfriend and children in a neighbor’s hoouse;

Officers said that Balduff crawled through a doggie door to get into the home and was shot in the chest. Blackmore said she was inside the house when her boyfriend tried coming inside the house.

“He said ‘we can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way, either way I’m coming inside and I’m going to get you,’” said Blackmore.

She said that is when she ran into the living room to hide. Blackmore said that the homeowner fired and shot Balduff as soon as he came inside the house.

I guess he chose the easy way? (sarcasm)

Flagwaver

So, he broke into a house and the homeowner shot him dead? I wonder what kind of abusive relationship he had with her that caused her to run to her neighbor for help.

I wonder at which point Washington will try charging the neighbor with kidnapping or wrongful use of a firearm…

NR Pax

He threatens her, threatens her child and she still ran over to hold his hand while he died? What the hell is wrong with people?

Eagle Keeper

NR Pax,

They had a relationship for 4 years. She’s carrying his baby.

I’m not saying he didn’t need shootin’. But what is wrong with you that you can’t even acknowledge their emotional ties, however tenuous?

NR Pax

Just the way I was raised. No matter what the emotional ties, the instant you threaten my life and try to carry out said threat that ends them.

The Dead Man

#4 Is right, can’t you understand battered wife syndrome, he beat her so bad that she ran to a neighbor because he loves her! /sarc

I’m not going to point and laugh because she held his hand, but there’s definitely something wrong there and my joke is probably not too far from the truth.

NR Pax

@6: My mother and brother are nurses. They’ve lost count of the number of brutalized women in the ER who still declare their love for the person that put them there.

Eagle Keeper

… and BTW, calling stories like this “feel-good” says something sad about a certain segment of the population who want to own guns for the perfectly legitimate reason of self-defense.

“Hey, lookee! This a-hole needed killin’! And he GOT killed! WOO HOO!” Is that really how you wish to be perceived by the undecided middle?

One of my defensive handgun instructors years ago was a covert ops guy in Vietnam and a retired LEO. He had the wisdom to urge his students to think seriously about the difference between when the law says you MAY use lethal force, and when you MUST use lethal force. “Don’t shoot when you MAY, shoot when you MUST. If avoiding a violent confrontation is an option, by all means, USE IT. Shooting another person WILL change your life, no matter how justified you are. Avoid if at all possible.”

I got my CCW permit shortly after moving from Phoenix to Spokane 4 years ago. But for some reason, I pretty much let my carry habits slip — I just stopped taking my handgun everywhere. But Sandy Hook (and the “political theater” that followed) got my attention, and I’ve since started carrying again.

So I’ll shoot a violent criminal if I must, and I’ll be very thankful to God if I prevail. But I can’t imagine “feeling good” about it.

The Dead Man

#7 I’ve got a cousin living the situation. It’s just like drug addicts, they won’t change until something drastic happens. Doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Eagle Keeper

BTW, I agree that people who remain in threatening relationships have deeper problems. But, we don’t know that this was the case here.

According to the reporter, Blackmore said that while she was heartbroken over Balduff’s death, she was confident that it was a “kill or be killed” situation. After a four-year relationship, isn’t it possible that this was the first time Balduff ever threatened her?

“we can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way, either way I’m coming inside and I’m going to get you”

“OK … easy way”

Bang … “your dead … that was easy”

Good Shoot!

Mitch

Doggie doors are a danger. I can remember a long time ago how a thief broke into my grandparent’s basement through the doggie door. They tried to get into the house to get their car keys, but ran off when they heard my grandfather loading his shotgun.

Just an Old Dog

From the looks of her, him and the history of their relationship it doesn’t look like there are any Rhode’s Scholars among them.

Hondo

Trying to get in a pet door, eh? Usually not a good idea.

http://www.cuug.ab.ca/bramwell/Humour/Cat_Doors_are_for_Cats.html

Supposedly the story is BS, but it’s still funny. (smile)

A Proud Infidel

Once again, one less criminal puke the taxpayers will have to feed, clothe, and house. We need to be vigilant about politicians wanting to “rewrite” States’ Castle Doctrines, that’s their backdoor way of outlawing self-defense!

NR Pax

and BTW, calling stories like this “feel-good” says something sad about a certain segment of the population who want to own guns for the perfectly legitimate reason of self-defense.

Concern troll is concerned. So noted.

NR Pax

@13: At least she had the sense to run to an armed neighbor for protection.

Hondo

NR Pax: yep. Looks like she had a good deal more in the way of sense than her now-room-temperature ex. Hopefully their kid turns out more like her than him.

It’s a shame that some low-life woman-beater who’d just threatened to kill both his child’s mother and the child and who was apparently attempting to do so ended up dead vice. Maybe a few years in prison as Bubba’s beyotch would have straightened him out. But I won’t lose sleep over it, either. It was his choice to be a low-life asshole.

As others before have said here at TAH: “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” In this case, his prize turned out to be a free trip to the morgue.

Eagle Keeper

NR Pax (16),

So the expression of any alternative view whatsoever constitutes “trolling”?

The expectation for 100% lockstep agreement boggles the mind.

How does chattering in an echo chamber constitute anything even approaching actual discussion?

UpNorth

@#10. The story, not the video, had more background. “She described her boyfriend as violent to KREM 2 News. She said that he spent Wednesday sending her more than 100 threatening text messages“.

“He threatened several times that he was going to kill me and the baby. He had said it multiple times,” said Blackmore.

The homeowners also said Balduff had been threatening them and they believed he was armed with a large knife at the time of the shooting.

NR Pax

@19: I noticed that you have never voiced similar objections to similarly titled stories on this site involving scum bags getting killed while committing a crime.

There’s no expectation of lockstep thought around here. Heck, we have quite a few liberal posters that chime in quite often. I simply took issue with your opinion that implied something was wrong with me about an observation I had made about the shooting.

Mike Kozlowski

Darwin nods.

The way I see it, the “Saturday Feel Good Story” is one about why we have 2d Amendment rights, and when exercising those rights turns out the way it should – not the fact that somebody died in the process.

In today’s political arena, there is much discussion about gun-control, and stories such as this rarely make the news.

In my opinion, one American exercised his belief that he could violate the right of another. Unfortunately, he lost.

streetsweeper

Yep, I’ll go with the Darwin line of thinking, too. Ol whats his name up there, Eagle Keeper must have known the decedent or he wouldn’t have sounded off like he did, maybe? All I know is, someone tries crawling through my doggies door they are going to leave one of two ways. Riding in the ambulance or coroner’s wagon. Another way to look at Eagle Keeper is, the shooter just saved you Washington state taxpayers roughly 40k in housing, medical and other associated costs of hosting that asshat in Wallawala State Guest Housing. Either way, it’s a two fer.

JoMack

I have a large dog door leading to the back yard. If someone tries to come in through That door, they will meet up with Jack, my 3 yo Rottweiler, and his backup. Me. With my S&W. there’s a reason that door is large enough for you to fit through.

Eagle Keeper

streetsweeper (24): “Ol whats his name up there, Eagle Keeper must have known the decedent or he wouldn’t have sounded off like he did, maybe?”

Uh, no. What was it that gave you that idea?

Was it where I said, “I’m not saying he didn’t need shootin'”? Or the fact that I carry, and am prepared to shoot a violent criminal if necessary?

Leave the detective work to the pros, Sherlock. I don’t have to dance on Balduff’s grave to be grateful that the homeowner successfully defended himself and Miss Blackmore.

LCDR M(Ret)

@7 I had the same experience as a beat cop. Very frustrating.

Old Trooper

@8: The “feel good” part is that a bad guy was stopped and the innocent were not harmed. Should it be called a “feel good story” when the bad guy wins? Also, not every time does the bad guy(s) get ventilated to room temp and it’s still called a “feel good story”.

I think you’re being a little over sensitive about it, today.

NRPax

@25, the one scene in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was more than enough to convince me that going through a dog door large enough to fit me was a Bad Idea.

2/17 Air Cav

EK. How one couches an issue or frames a question usually dictates the response to the issue or question. These feel-good stories posit evildoers against innocents and wrong versus right. The stories do not presume to know the background of the principals involved in the feel-good stories or the facts of each case. Speaking for myself, I enjoy the stories because they are (or strongly appear to be) a triumph of good over evil. In addition, there is a clear and timely secondary issue presented in these stories: The retention of our right to defend ourselves, others, and our property with a firearm. We have not divested ourselves of our humanity and understand well what taking a human life means. My compassion is spent on the defender in these instances. I am hopeful that a citizen who shoots another in defense of self or home does not suffer the rest of his days because of what he was forced to do. Time for debate and discussion is not usually granted to those visited by a home invader or a street thug. That luxury belongs only to distant observers.

[…] This ain’t Hell…. has the feel good story of the day […]

Ex-PH2

“If a man comes to kill you, rise early and kill him first”
(Talmud, Berakoth 58b).

know the whole story

They called 911 2 times. They gave 911 wrong address. They watched a man bleed out. This was a drug house both Marshall and Kim were using. George had Marshall dealing for him. Theres so much to this story. Marshall would never harm one of his children. Im not saying drugs are a excuse but I dated Marshall when he was clen and this is not who he is.

NRPax

@33: Please provide evidence that backs up your allegations.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

Take all the drug talk out of the story and it is still a good shoot.

Yes … even drug dealers and users have rights … unfortunately!

2/17 Air Cav

“Im not saying drugs are a excuse but I dated Marshall when he was clen and this is not who he is.” 100 text messages, witnesses, and a shot to the chest delivered to him in the crawlspace of someone else’s home say otherwise.

NR Pax

They gave 911 wrong address.

And everyone knows that your address doesn’t appear on 911 automatically when you call them.

Theres so much to this story.

You know, even in my wild and misspent youth, I would not look at a body in a dog door with a knife in his hands and think “There’s a better explanation for this.”

Anonymous

“Balduff” – noun – the short, downy fuzz found on the ballsacks of “men” who beat women.

Hondo

In fairness, NR Pax – I’m not sure that 911 gets particularly accurate automated location information from 911 calls that are made using cell phones. From landlines, generally yes.

NR Pax

Fair enough, Hondo. But I doubt the homeowner lied about his location.

Vicki

I think everyone of you are sick. You have no idea what happen and to call this a feel good story, just shows how sick you are. You people are the kind that the world needs less of. You people are the kind that think the neighborhood watch guy did a good thing, you all are sick.

A Proud Infidel

@#41: BUUUURRP!* Well SUE ME, and if you get anything, I’ll split it with you (Mighty liberal of me, ain’t it?)!! We see story after story of people robbed, raped, and murdered day after day, and of how slimeball lawyers get the crooks off, sue for more “rights and privileges for inmates,… And here we hear stories of people who defend themselves, they don’t run bawling to the government to heeeelp them, they help themselves. As for you “Vicki” I suggest you dial 9-111111 and request a WAAAAAHmbulance to take you somewhere for a group hug, some fresh Kool-Aid, and a few verses of “Kum-ba-yah” as for me and others here, we’ll continue to live in the real world!
